getting to know hazel mak

Hazel Mak, the rising Malawian songstress

had a chat with Runway Duchess and shared about all things music and life. The beauty, revealed her passion for music, the love she has for her country and the challenges she has met and continues to meet as she strives for success.

You are one of Malawi's how is that like in an ind Its very hard to be hon talented, smart and amb anything if you are a wo preconceived ideas of w most female artisits, thi really just motivates me

Tell us a bit about your music played in it. Music has always been started at a very young my father instead of goi organize these “creative sisters and I would do a During one of these eve could sing so he enrolle school where I studied b and singing. And when w studied marketing and m is also a huge part of the

s rising female musicians, dustry dominated by males? nest. Its almost like being bitious doesn't count for oman. People always have women in music and for is is disheartening. All that e. background and the role

n everything to me and I age. Growing up in Namibia ing out drinking would e Friday nights where my all kinds of performances. enings my father noticed I ed me in a performing arts ballet, contemporary dance we moved to the UK, I media management which e music industry.

What drew you towards music? I am an all around creative person. I am into all things that allow me to be creative. Music is everything to me, it represents everything I believe in, freedom, love, spirituality, enlightenment and education. Music is what you make of it and it all started with my parents as they saw something in me. My dad went to his grave still believing in my talent and I owe it to him to finish what he started.

How would you explain your sound? My music is far from conservative, as My Genre ranges from Afro-soul, R n B and some house. I feel in the Malawian music industry, women tend to shy away from issues that we experience; well as for me I’m the complete opposite. I want to sing about the issues that are going on. If my government is whack, I want to sing about it, if someone breaks my heart, I want to sing about it. So my music is about being an African woman, being fearless, being bold, and essentially empowering listeners. I want to be as diverse as Brenda Fassie was.

What other artists inspire you? I listen to pretty weird music but Lisa Bonnet; she’s a cross between singing and poetry. I listen to a lot of Annette Le Cru who is very neo soul. I like Mandela’s music, Asa, Dominant1, Gwamba, Bucci and there’s this one guy from the Living room in Lilongwe, who is absolutely crazy. If you were to collaborate with any artist internationally or locally who would it be and why?

Hmmm hard one. I would say Sauti Sol. mThey are good friends of mine but I truly and honestly believe in their talent and I would love to work with them. They are the very best from Malawi; the way they have infused Malawian and Western sounds to create their indie sound is amazing.

You are about to release a new album, can you tell us a little about this? My new album is entitled “Nyumba on Fire”, it’s an eclectic project/sounds and I want to invite all the listeners into my little world. There are several dance tracks, Ballads, House joints, and some Mid-tempo songs. I’ve currently releases a single entitled Umbeta which I recorded when I was in Malawi last year. I plan on releasing the album in May of s this year.

e

What has been the highlight of your career? I worked behind the scenes for the company that released Theo Thompsons “soldier” video. I really enjoyed helping directing music videos. I’ve done marketing campaigns with Cheryl Cole, Elton John and 2Face. I’ve also worked with Hip-Hop Bantula and Blaze. I just want to do my best to create a platform for other Malawian artists and one day start an Agency in Malawi.

Do you write all your songs? I mostly write all my own songs, because y it then gives me the creative control over them. Sometimes my sister Tele Mak helps with some of my songs, for example she helped with a couple of tracks from the upcoming album she is also extremely talented.

"Music is everything to me, it represents everything I believe in, freedom, love, spirituality, enlightenment and education."

Has there been a low point in your career that you felt like giving up on music altogether? If so briefly describe it. Yeah plenty. When I was about to get signed the first time, I was given a terrible contract and I made the decision not to sign it and I lost everything. By saying no to the contract, I lost my music and had to drop everything and travel back to Malawi and start all over again. In hindsight it made me reinvent myself. When you have lost something you have worked so hard for giving up when you are so close is never an option. You just keep swimming. Describe your life in a day, how does it usually start and end? I wake up, check my email, respond to them, workout, make coffee, jump in the shower, the head to work at Lebara where I work in the Customer services department for tech control. After I knock off, I make some music, workout then I go to bed. When you are not making music or working, how do you relax and let loose? I love to spend time with my mother, read, paint, travel, have intellectual conversations about life, drinking at artsy live music bars in Shoreditch , going to hip hop concerts with friends, attending fashion shows, charity events and generally living life like a bohemian (laughs). I style music videos, I make jewellery. I do lots. I read a lot too. What is your style when it comes to Fashion? I’m a bohemian/post African/ vintage person. I have short hair because I simply can’t keep up with the latest trends. I’m definitely not a girly girl but I’m definitely a vintage junkie. I love my shoes, ranging from Jordan’s and Nikes and I love watches. Let's say you are at a party, are you the girl dancing the night away on the dance floor or are you the girl locked in the corner texting the whole night through? (Laughs) I'm the happy go lucky girl on the dance floor. I love dancing even if I'm the only one on the dancefloor (laughs). Dancing shoes + good music = (rubs hands) let's set this Nyumba (house) on fire.

What’s your motto or advice you live by? I’m sort of a hippie at heart; I believe that you have to be a positive influence on yourself, keeping yourself in a good zone always. Don’t stress over things you can’t change. What’s meant to be is meant to be. Embrace the bad and embellish on the positive. What advice would you have for the young African girl out there with big dreams? Education is important. And always believe in yourself because people will always be ready to put you down. Like the laws of attraction don’t attract failure, attract positivity and success because you have control over your own life.

p What more should we expect from Hazel Mak d in the years to come? More creativity, humanitarian work, giving back to Africa, more collaborations, all in all; growth.

END

RUNWAY TRENDS 2014 FALL/WINTER TRENDS FURS Fur coats are in this winter and are more wild, colourful and layered. They divert from the classic look by going two-tone and tricolor. The usual blacks change to neon yellow and hot pink and brown turns red or green. Stylish as usual, a great piece to add to the winter wardrobe.

THE 6OS It was evident that fashion from the 60s took a trip to the future with slights twists and some modern eccesentric styling. Designers took inspiration with shift dresses, kitschy prints and go-go boots. Blending the past and the present, fashion brands are giving the modern girl a trip to the past while letting old GUCCI fashion styles live on.

HOUSE OF HOLLAND

DSQUARED

BRIGHT COLOURS Dark shades associated with winter tend to be boring and if you feel the same way then be glad because some designers diverted from the gloomy colours and gave us warm scarlets, fuchsias and among other tones in an effort to bring some much needed shine in winter.
