FROM THE EDITOR
A new is upon us and am sure many of us have New Year resolutions all piled up somewhere with intent on seeing them through unlike the previous years. Hopefully we all get the chance to look back at the year gone past and work on making 2015 a bigger and better year. When it comes to making 2015 a bigger and better year, Runway Duchess is definitely up to doing just that and this issue looks back at our debut year and the direction it is going to take in the New Year. January ushers in the 4th issue of Runway Duchess. Themed “The Model Issue’’ we celebrate the brand New Year by looking at some of Africa’s hottest exports to the international modelling industry. We also get to know rising Model BIANCA KOYABE who lets us see the modelling world through her eyes. Also in this issue we look at the fashion trends that will take over in the New Year while we get to appreciate the allure of accessories through the pages painted with the brush of 2014’s hottest designer bags. Enjoy this brand new Issue and have a happy and prosperous New Year!

1. 2014 was definitely Lupita Nyong’o’s year. Collecting one award after another, we were excited for her and even more excited with her style. Picked by many fashion critics as the best dressed at the 2014 Golden Globes, her red hot Ralph Lauren cap dress was a winner.
2. The ever classy Cate Blanchett also had an amazing run in 2014. One successful film after another, her red carpet style was just as much of a success. The black lace and tulle Armani Prive dress she wore at the Golden Globes sealed the actress’s position as one of Hollywood’s best dressed stars.
3.Another star who had a fashionable year is Taylor Swift. The country singer was one of 2014’s most improved stars and she did not disappoint in this Carolina Herrera red and black dress she wore at the Golden Globes.
4. It was a glitzy night with many stars opting for shiny looks then mommy-to-be Ciara looked amazing in this Emilio Pucci gown. 5. Taylor Swift stunned in this GUCCI gown. A little edgy, it was glamourous and sexy making it one of Taylor’s best looks yet. 6. Continuing the sparkling trend of the night, Chrissy Teigen hit all the right spots in this sparkling strapless number by Johanna Johnson.

7. Fashion’s new darling Lupita Nyong’o looked absolutely beautiful in this breath-taking blue Prada gown with a plunging neckline.
8. The ever glamorous Cate Blanchett was a stunner as usual in embellished Armani Gown at the 2014 Oscars. The nude colour of the dress paired with Swarovski crystals looked amazing on the Oscar winning actress.
9. The ever stylish Amy Adams looked stunning in a navy blue Gucci dress with a peplum detail. Her Tiffany & Co. Jewelry topped up this winning look.
2014’S MOST MEMORABLE RED CARPET LOOKS 2014 saw some of the most memorable
red carpet fashions of the millennium. From baby bumped stars rocking maternity couture to the fiery colourful style of breakout star Lupita Nyong’o , 2014 was definitely a year of style and we have aligned some of the best red carpet fashions from your favourite award shows.
10. Sandra Bullock looked elegant in a strapless navy Alexander Macqueen gown proving yet again that you can’t go wrong in navy. 11. Kate Hudson looked absolutely beautiful in this Atelier Versace gown with cape detail. Old Hollywood glamour hair and sultry make up finished up her glamourous look.

12Duchess Magazine | www.runwayduchess.com 12 •Runway Designfreebies Magazine • www.designfreebies.org
What aspects of the modeling industry were you not prepared for when you first started out?
The biggest thing for me was my eating regime - as I said earlier I love good food. It was a big thing for me, but I had to quickly get into eating the right foods at the right time and not just eating whatever I wanted to. I also wasn’t prepared for the amount of rejection that I faced and still face today. I can however say that now, after 3 years of modeling, I have developed such a thick skin and I have learnt not to take anything personally - it’s so important. What has been your biggest challenge so far?
Up until now my biggest challenge has been my height. I stand
at 1.68m (5 ft 6) and I have been rejected from agencies as well as had a hard time booking jobs because I am not the “ideal” model height. And I will say it again, over time you learn not to take it personally - but one thing you do learn is what the meaning of hard work really is.

What is it like being a model yourself and also running a business for models?
It’s great, I am always up to date with new talent and being a model myself it makes it easy to identify girls who would do well in my company. What else are you currently busy with?
I am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion at LISOF. So apart from being on set and going to castings as well as running my business, I am also a student. What are your goals? Where do you want to be 3 years from now?
My main goal in life is to create a balanced life and to be the best person that I can be. Three years from now, I would have graduated and completed my degree. And I would like to travel America and Europe in the hope of gaining international modeling experience. Who are your favorite models?
That’s easy. Alek Wek and Kate Moss. Which designers would you love to walk a runway show for?
I would love to walk for Marc Jacobs, Gert-Johan Coetzee and Givenchy. What do you think of the current standard of the modeling

There are a number of people who have a lot of negative opinions about models, have you ever encountered one of such people?
No, not yet. But as long as I now why I am modeling and who I am. If I ever encounter such a person, it won’t bother me because we all have different views and opinions. How do you deal with the negativity that is directed towards you as a model?
I always remind myself that there is a bigger picture to this all, nd that even though it-
may not make sense to some people, it makes sense to me because I am trying to build a bigger and better life for myself and for my family. I always keep my future in mind and the one thing that is always so profound to me is that “you cannot please everyone” and the moment we as people realise this, the less trapped we’ll feel about always having to try and live up to people’s standards and rather live for yourself. What motivates you and keeps you going amidst challenges and disappointments?
My biggest motivation are my friends, family and all the wonderful people I have met in this journey - the amount of support that I get from the people closest to me and even people I don’t know gives me the most happiness and joy. Knowing that even though there are people who won’t understand or support me that there will always be those people who remind you everyday that it is worth it. Any words for the aspiring models out there?
Three things. Know who you are, know your values and morals and lastly go after anything and everything no matter how daunting or unrealistic it may seem.

2015 TREND FORECAST 1. The Kimono style. Designers took their creativity to a whole new level with the classic Japanese dress. Refreshing and laid back, the Kimono style was displayed through a variety of chic looks that included trench coats, jackets and dresses featured on the runway shows of The Row, Tracy Reese and Vera Wang.

2. Gingham. Plaids have been hot for a minute now, but 2015 will see the rise of the gingham. The tiny check was all over the runways with big name designers like Altuzarra, Diane Von Furstenberg and the late Oscar de la Renta incorporating it into their designs. From flirty dresses, shirt dresses, crop tops to high powered suits, the gingham is here to take over.

3. Navy Pride Navy has been and will probably continue being one of the most fashionable colours and for 2015 designers have embraced the colour with a stronger force. Being a flexible colour that goes with almost if not all occasions, runway shows of designers like Calvin Klein, Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs were flooded with navy tops, coats, pants, evening dresses, power suits and shorts.
