Youth

Honoring the Legacy This past Sunday our family did something that we haven’t done in several months which is that we skipped church on Sunday. Well technically I took a vacation day to spend some muchneeded time with my family. While this might not seem like such a crazy thing, special holidays are one of those things that people who work in the local church often sacrifice because of our ministries. Don’t get me wrong I love the families that I am blessed to minister to but sometimes that comes at the expense of my own family. Well needless to say this Mother’s Day we decided to take a semi-spontaneous trip to Pittsburgh to spend a couple of days there. We enjoyed our time away, saw some animals at the zoo which our children loved, ate some wonderful food and simply enjoyed being together as a family. However, as I was going through this weekend and thinking about Mother’s Day a few things hit me. Read the full story at http://faithumc-refuge.tumblr.com/ As you think about your own life and your parents, I want you to consider a few of questions today. First, if your parents are still alive, when was the last time you truly appreciated them for everything that they have done for you? What could you do to thank them for the influence they had in your life? Second, if your parents have passed away remember some of the wonderful characteristics that you have today because of their influence. I challenge you to find a way to remember and honor them if you haven’t already. Third and finally, if you are a parent yourself what qualities do you desire to instill in your children and students for years to come, knowing that your influence may not be truly appreciated for years to come? As you reflect upon these questions, remember that your influence as a parent does truly matter and seek to find a way to thank your parents for their influence in your life as well. Holy Conferencing Homosexuality, the Bible and the Church With guests speakers Rev. Dr. Chet Harris and Rev. Dr. Ken Chalker Saturday, June 7, 8:45-12:30, Robinson Hall

In December of this past year, Rev. Frank Schaefer, a United Methodist Pastor in the Pennsylvania Conference, had his ordination revoked because he performed a wedding for his gay son. The official stance of the United Methodist Church (UMC) is that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching” and therefore “Ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by [UMC] ministers…” and “self-avowed practicing homosexuals are not to be… ordained as ministers…” (¶ 161.F, ¶ 341.6 & ¶ 304.3 in the 2012 Book of Discipline). However, a growing number of United Methodists disagree with the church’s current and historical stance. The Sunday after Rev. Schaefer was defrocked, I invited the church to be in prayer for the UMC in light of this news. After the service and throughout the following week, a number of people spoke with me about their concerns related to the UMC and its stance on homosexuality. Some feel strongly that the UMC needs to firmly hold to its current stance. Some feel strongly that the UMC needs to change. The people of Faith UMC, like the whole denomination, represent diverse perspectives on the topic. One of the strengths of FUMC is its diversity of perspectives. Living in diverse community facilitates spiritual growth in our ability to love God, neighbor and self, the foundation of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. But, it isn’t easy. Understanding, appreciating and ultimately loving persons who passionately hold views opposed to our own takes prayer and practice. According to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, holy conferencing is key to that practice and growth. Cara and I feel called to engage holy conferencing at all levels of ministry for relationship building, discernment and decision-making. John Wesley believed that the Holy Spirit is enlivened to do its transformational work when God’s people come to the table in honest, humble, authentic and even passionate dialogue - in other words, through holy conferencing. In the midst of the controversial topics of his day, Wesley said, “Though we may not all think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart though we may not be of one opinion? If your heart is as my heart, give me thy hand”. Wesley believed that holy conferencing is a means of grace like communion, worship, prayer, mission work and working for justice. Wesley’s comments convey the spirit and hope of holy conferencing. You are invited to participate in an experience of holy conferencing about the topic of homosexuality, the Bible and the Church on Saturday, June 7, 8:45-12:30 in Robinson Hall at Faith UMC. Rev. Dr. Chester “Chet” Harris and Rev. Dr. Ken Chalker, two highly respected UMC pastors and leaders serving in East Ohio will each tell their story and how they came to hold their opposing views. Pastors Steve and Cara will begin the day with worship, prayer, introductions and a review of the biblical and historical precedent for holy conferencing. The experience will close with Holy Communion. The purpose of the event is NOT to convince anyone of one view over the other, but rather to allow participants to learn about holy conferencing, hear different views and consider their own beliefs. For more information, including Rev. Harris’ and Rev. Chalker’s biographies, suggested reading and recommended DVDs, please visit www.faithumchurch.org Growing as disciples together in community, Pastor Steve

Peace with Justice Sunday June 15 Peace with Justice Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. It is one of the six churchwide Special Sundays of The United Methodist Church. Participation in this offering enables The United Methodist Church to have a voice in advocating for peace and justice through a broad spectrum of global programs. Your gift on Peace With Justice Sunday helps spread the Gospel of Peace and encourages cooperation. Where exactly will the Peace with Justice Sunday offering go? Faith Church's offering dollars are forwarded to the East Ohio Conference which retains half of the proceeds and forwards the other half to the General Council on Finance and Administration. East Ohio's Peace with Justice Coordinator and committee determine how the East Ohio money will be used. Many conferences give grants to local churches and other United Methodist programs that promote peace with justice; others use the money for training in conflict resolution or other education initiatives within the conference. Please give to this important offering.

SCOUT TROOP 12 NEWS and INFORMATION June 2014 June 22-28: Preparations have begun for our troop’s annual Summer Camp at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation. Our scouts are busy gathering wood for our Pipestone Ceremony, completing requirements for rank advancement, and finishing prerequisites for merit badges. It is a busy time for the scouts and adult leaders! In addition, we will be celebrating the 50 th anniversary of our chartering of Troop 12 at summer camp. Our families will travel to Seven Ranges on one of our final nights of camp for a celebration dinner.

*As we celebrate the 50th anniversary this year of our charter with Faith United Methodist Church, we thought we would share some history and the names of the men who envisioned a Boy Scout Troop affiliation. What did $26.13 buy back in the early 1960’s? Well, it was enough to buy a Boy Scout Charter at FUMC! The original Troop 12 began with 26 new Boy Scouts and the first Scoutmaster, John Wright, and Assistant Scoutmaster, George Wilkin. Some other committee members who were instrumental in founding Troop 12 were Orin Harrington, Homer Force, Ken Losch, Dave Oby, and Wayne McCarthy. We are thankful for these men and their vision of establishing an organization for the youth of the church. We are proud to continue the fine reputation of Troop 12 that began with these men and the supportive congregation in 1964, and we thank God for the supportive church and congregation that we still have today.

Early July: An exciting high journey awaits many of our scouts and adult leaders as they travel to Northern Minnesota and the Great Northwoods to the Northern Tier High Adventure. The campers will encounter thousands and thousands of acres of pristine lakes and meandering streams, as well as dense forests and wetlands. This is a canoeing and camping adventure of a lifetime, and we pray for safe travels and wonderful memories for our scouts.

Change the World! Make a Difference in the Life of a Child! You may or may not be aware that 85 % of first time faith commitments are made between the ages of 4 and 14. This is one among many reasons that ministry with children is vital at Faith UMC. This summer we are blessed with many opportunities to nurture the faith of children and make a difference in their lives which ultimately changes the world - one child, one family at a time. Making a difference in the life of a child and their family can happen in many ways: Helping children and families feel welcome (Faith UMC is wonderful at this!)
