When the spring started, began also the final construction and erection works on the “Bridge

of Art”, part of

the great project “Skopje 2014” of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. The design of “The Bridge of Art” is a work of the architectural couple Viktoria and Kosta Mangarovski, while the contractor of the construction works is ADG BETON Skopje. According to the design of this project, from the both sides, the bridge will be decorated with 29 bronze statues of the Macedonian cultural creators. This is a pedestrian bridge over the river Vardar in the centre of Skopje, that spans the both banks of the river, one of the side of the City Trading Centre and the other with the Public Prosecution House and the financial police, still under construction, also part of the project: “Skopje 2014”.

We were fully prepared with previously designed technology for erection and mounting of the bridge sections, says project manager, responsible for the erection works of FAKOM, Saso Bardakovski. We worked at full stretch in order to complete the works within the deadline, although the weather conditions seriously affect the work. Many times even the wind could cause problems with the accuracy. The snow in the beginning of February significantly delay the erection works on the site, adds Baradakovski asked about the works flow. But FAKOM has experience enough, not to allow the weather conditions to affect the quality of the work. So at the end of April, FAKOM finishes with the planed erection works on the bridge.

In order to develop this project, FAKOM initially made a workshop elaboration of the project and prepare a complete technical documentation for construction. The manufactured segments of the bridge were transferred to the construction site, where Erection Unit of FAKOM undertakes the further works of assembling of the segments. Cranes and mobile cranes of its own fleet were used. At the beginning, the side supportive structure and the bearings were erected, then comes the coastal segments, the middle part of the main girder, the left and the right bow and at the end, the main girder bridge is being erected which, at the same time is a walkway along the bridge.

simultaneously taking up segments above the riverbed. For the accuracy of this operation FAKOM applied for the first time its most sophisticated measuring equipment, with accuracy of measurement in hundredth part of millimeter.”


Precise Measurement Technology Using this equipment all manufactured parts of the bridge were compared with 3D model of the bridge and then “virtually” assembled, still in the manufacturing phase, and after that positioned carefully at the facility itself. These modern tools demonstrated their power especially when needs to set massive bridge bearings (each with a mass of 3.2 tones) at an angle of 42 degrees with a horizontal flat, practically “floating in the air” on mutual distance of 3.5 meters in one direction and 53 meters in another, with accuracy (maximal deviation from the ideal axis of bearings) of 0.2 mm. Further, setting the remaining segments of the bridge was like assembling huge LEGO bricks. For this purpose, 8 benchmarks were placed on the facility, always providing positioning and repositioning of the measuring instruments with great accuracy, working with different instruments but always staying in the same coordinate system. All the results coming from the measurements were presented in 3D visual reports, legible even for laic people.
