Ray & Charles Eames: life’s a Classic! The designers and architects Ray & Charles Eames in their studio

The American designers Ray and Charles Eames created modern design classics by combining functionality and style. The PRIAM pushchair from the CYBEX PLATINUM range is an homage to the innovative power of their life’s work.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that it was two Americans who enhanced classic modern architecture and design in two significant ways, by infusing it with sound judgement and with humour. In contrast, European-led Bauhaus design was always closely linked with ideology. To be cynical, you could say that the Bauhaus movement simply followed the principle “form follows religion”. But Ray and Charles Eames worked according to a different principle: they took the world as it is – and improved it. The dream duo met during the Second World War – he was an architect, she was an artist – and started out designing leg braces, stretchers and aircraft parts for the US Army. What they came away with from this time was a strong curiosity for what could be achieved with limited means and how you could coax new characteristics and qualities out of simple materials.

During the following decades, the couple would completely shake up people’s understanding of what was attractive and useful and their influence can still be felt today. There is hardly a flat in London Shoreditch, Berlin Mitte or Williamsburg that does not contain at least one of their designs, lovingly unearthed at a flea market or bought new. Because unlike many other classic pieces of furniture, the chairs of Ray and Charles Eames have always remained true to their original concept. Even new, they are relatively affordable, and they look good whatever their age. Although the word “age” should be used with care – they are absolute classics. But what is a real classic? We need look no further than some of Ray and Charles Eames’ biggest hits. The “Eames Plastic Side Chair” is actually just a piece of plastic that was organically moulded into a seat and backrest perfectly aligned with the human anatomy, and then screwed to a wire frame. The simple design innovatively combined two materials: plastic, which was liberated from its reputation of being cheap, and metal, which was a stylish reference to the hard-core functionalism of the machine age. What’s more, this chair allows for countless different configurations, with a variety of legs, a rocking function, and a wide range of colours. For Ray and Charles, design had to be functional – and fun. 5

The “Lounge Chair” (pictured left) was the result of tenacious research. Since the 1930s, the Eames’ had experimented with the technique of bending plywood to form three-dimensional curves. With this design (developed in 1956), the designers succeeding in finding a solution that still sets standards today. Inspired by the ingenious simplicity, functionality and beauty of Ray and Charles Eames’ designs, we asked ourselves “How would Ray and Charles Eames create a pushchair if they were alive today?” The aim was to translate the aesthetic and functional standards into a modern pushchair. This led to the development of the PRIAM - an extremely robust and versatile pushchair, yet still possessing a form that is incomparably light and timeless. The PRIAM is a homage to Ray and Charles Eames. Their motto “The details are not the details. They make the design” was the motto running through the entire development of this premium pushchair.

the fascination of Modernism The architect Felix Burrichter is editor-in-chief and creative director at the New York architecture magazine PIN-UP. Besides conducting interviews with influential contemporary architects, the magazine explores cultural phenomena and tracks down the latest design concepts, all paired with pioneering photography. Felix Burrichter spoke to Eva Munz about the enduring appeal of California modernism.

Mr Burrichter, where did the aesthetic of California Modernism, which is still popular to this day, originate?

land, the Hollywood Hills were untouched in parts, and there were only a few houses scattered throughout the hills along Mulholland Drive. When so much land is available you obviously don’t build a high-rise à la Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse.

Felix Burrichter: What is nowadays referred to as California Modernism – or sometimes L.A Modernism – is a direct result of the two World Wars. The Californian version of modernist architecture began its triumphant march with the Case Study Houses. In 1945 the magazine Arts & Architecture launched a competition to design new housing for young families. Millions of people were returning from the war and needed a home. At the time, the suburban structures that are today emblematic of America did not yet exist. There were suburban villa neighbourhoods, but the dream of a normal family of four having their own detached house with a garden had not yet been realised. The idea of the magazine was to carry out a kind of case study of modern living. Eight architects including Summer Spaulding, Eero Saarinen, Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig and Ray and Charles Eames were invited to take part.

Presumably the climate also played a role. That made the whole thing easier. For example, Charles and Ray Eames’ famous house is in Santa Monica. To build a house like this on the East coast would have been difficult, not least in terms of insulation. The architects of the Case Study Houses, which included the Eames’, were set the challenge of using new materials. Many of these materials only began to be mass produced during the war and were therefore being used in architecture for the first time. But it was important that the materials were not too rare or expensive, because the top priority was that the houses were relatively inexpensive to build and therefore suitable for mass production.

Why are we still so fascinated by this era and why did the movement start in California in particular?

There is an incredible lightness to the Case Study Houses in comparison to comparable architectural currents like the Bauhaus movement.

It was a simpler time, more optimistic. The American Dream still seemed to be within reach of every American. Los Angeles in the Forties was sparsely populated, there was space, land was cheap and you could afford to design on a bigger scale. The city was far removed from the urban jungle that we know today. Between downtown LA and Hollywood there was still lots of undeveloped

There are several reasons for this. Glass creates transparency and lightness. A house with walls of windows on every side always comes across as very open. And of course the location plays an important role: the stunning landscape, the Pacific Ocean, the pleasant climate. Not to mention the proximity to Hollywood. Hollywood radiated glamour on its surroundings. The proximity to an 19

Interview today call sustainability was important. The strategy of furniture producers nowadays to produce cheaply, with the expectation that the furniture will break so that they can sell new pieces, was not widespread at the time. But for Eames, their strategy of sustainability did work: the models are true classics.

I was only allowed to keep the posters on the condition that she didn’t have to look at them. So I hung them on the wall behind my bath, because that way my mother could pull the shower curtain shut. As a result I always had to shower in my sister’s bathroom so that my Madonna altar wouldn’t get wet!

How would you describe your own style? How is your flat decorated?

In your magazine PIN-UP, you take a playful approach to design. The subtitle of the magazine is “for Architectural Entertainment”.

Personally I also prefer a classic aesthetic, almost clinically simple, as you would imagine from an architect. The colour palette in my house doesn’t go much beyond black and white. I love colour, but mostly only in the form of flowers, which you can throw away with a good conscience after a few days when you’ve had enough of looking at them.

From the very first issue we often included things that would generally be considered tasteless. Although I don’t really like this kind of compartmentalising. I don’t think really bad taste exists … apart from in human behaviour. There is a lot of what I would describe as bad form. But in terms of design, furnishing and aesthetics I don’t think it really exists. At most there is no taste. In PIN-UP we often show things that have been made with so much effort, love and care that they deserve a closer look. Admittedly with different effects. Every strong aesthetic reflects a personality. And that interests me.

Was that always the case? What did your room look like when you were a teenager growing up with your family in Germany? My room was wall-to-wall Interlübke, with a square Herman Miller Eames table, my parents’ old dining table that served as my desk. The only faux pas I can think of is a collection of Madonna posters, with which I wallpapered one of the walls from top to bottom. That must have been around 1991/92 when Madonna’s SEX book was published and I was entering puberty. My mother was horrified.

Later trends often seem to feel outdated and obsolete far quicker. Why is this?

industry devoted to entertainment of course had an effect on the Californian lifestyle. But probably the most important point that led to the success of the Case Study Architecture competition was the way in which the houses were portrayed by the photographer Julius Shulman. His carefully choreographed photos were an important reason why the houses became so famous worldwide, and were often cited and copied.

Shulman’s photos made many of the houses appear timeless – but we mustn’t forget that by the 1980s, many of the Case Study Houses did seem old-fashioned and no longer met the requirements of the typical modern American family, for whom they had originally been designed. But their simplicity and the almost minimalist clarity of the design made it easy to rediscover them again as status symbols in the 1990s.

Which photo do you think was the catalyst?

Today the mid-century aesthetic is associated more with a stylish single person’s flat than with family housing.

Probably the most famous one is a black-and-white photo that Schulman took in 1960 of the Case Study House #22. It shows a house with big windows at night, and is taken at an angle that makes it look as if the house is floating over LA. Two women in elegant evening dresses are sipping cocktails. Since this photo, countless fashion and advertising features have been shot here. The house is actually not particularly big – two bedrooms, the living room is not that spacious, and the pool looks bigger on the photo than it really is. But it still has an incredible appeal. It was similar with Richard Neutra’s Desert House in Palm Springs from 1946, which Shulman brilliantly immortalised: the Kaufmanns sunbathing by a pool. The house was auctioned at Christie’s in 2007 for a spectacular sum of 19.1 million dollars – an appreciation in value that is surely also thanks to Shulman’s brilliant photo.

Perhaps it is not associated only with singles, but certainly with a higher, more elite and exclusive aesthetic. Which is the exact opposite of what it originally stood for: well-made, good design, simple, durable but also affordable. Most of these houses are worth a fortune nowadays. Was Eames furniture actually affordable at the time? Eames furniture was never cheap, mainly because new production methods were being used. But at the time people still expected to be able to sit in a chair for the next 30 years. What we would

» Something that had a childlike quality « Fashion designer JEREMY SCOTT on his collaboration with CYBEX, Karl Lagerfeld and hyphenated realities.

You collaborated with a lot of brands from different backgrounds and now you have designed a children’s collection. Can you tell me what intrigued you to do that? Jeremy Scott: I love to design. For me design is like water in a pitcher, I can put it into a glass, into a vase, into a pool, into the ocean and it will take all these different forms. I love bringing my creativity to new domains and the idea of doing something completely unexpected, like a baby stroller, seemed very exciting to me. Plus I have so many friends who are young mothers and knowing how they struggle to find something that they feel is cool for their babies; it just felt like a natural fit to me, to design something that I could give as a gift to my friends.

where one student would throw a piece of pizza at someone else, who’d throw another piece and everyone would be throwing food. That always seemed to happen in movies but I’ve never had one happen in my life and it always seemed like a cool thing happening in a cool high school. So I was thinking about that one day and I thought how funny this name “food fight” was! So I started thinking: what if the food was actually fighting? So there is boxing gloves on this one and this one throwing popcorn and that one’s got the left hook. That’s how this idea developed. Which one is your favorite character? I think the cutest one is the Sodapop Girl because she’s the only one who is not fighting in any way. She’s kind of posing and I thought she’s really cute, with her sexy little legs and her kind of like Betty Boop attitude. She’s just adorable.

How do you get inspired? My inspiration comes from everywhere. It comes from films, memories, art museums and conversations or sometimes from talking about things. I’m inspired by my friends and I’m inspired by the way I am putting clothes together for myself when I’m getting dressed. So I am taking all these elements combine them and hopefully create something new.

Karl Lagerfeld once said, you are the person who could replace him. What a statement! Well, it’s a huge compliment! I mean, obviously he’s such an icon and such an epiphany of fashion designer, the number one. Also because he is a friend and it is such a wonderful thought to know that someone that I respect and admire so much has so much admiration for me.

You grew up in Kansas, which is a very rural part of the USA dominated by farmers. How does your upbringing influence your design? Well, I think the thing that always comes back to me from my childhood is the fact that I saw so much of the world through media, especially television and film. It’s almost like it is larger than life, like a megaphone. That’s why I have such a loud perspective, because I’m trying to convey a message the way I learned these messages myself. Because oddly I thought that everyone else looked and dressed and had this kind of appearance elsewhere, just not on the farm that I was living at. I didn’t quite understand that these were hyphenated realities.

What would you think is the biggest fashion faux pas these days? You know, I really don’t think there are any fashion faux pas. I feel like everything goes and the main thing is, that you like it and it feels good to you and you feel like you look good. Then it’s great! Nowadays children safety products like strollers are a fashion statement. Can you talk a little bit about how us parents can integrate these accessories best. I would think the best thing to do, is to have something that makes you happy. That’s what I try to do with this project, which is to create something that has a childlike quality but there is also humour that only an adult can get. I think that’s what is important when you’re trying to make something that’s going to work for both kids and adults.

You chose food characters that come to life. How did you come up with that idea? Actually this was just a kind of a joke. It started with a thought or rather phrase in English called “food fight” and it would happen usually in movies in the ‘80s. There would be a cafeteria scene

over 250 Awards Every year, CYBEX products are subjected to hundreds of crash tests, which result in the continual improvement of our products. Our car seats are regularly tested and evaluated by independent test institutes. We are proud that our car seats repeatedly achieve outstanding results in the most important European safety and consumer tests such as ADAC and Stiftung Warentest.

The basic idea behind all CYBEX products is the D.S.F. Innovation Principle. It stands for a product line with a clear and unique design that fulfils the highest safety standards, and that implements intelligent functionality. Here we have summed up some of our most important safety principles:

Children who are not secured are seven times more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a car accident than secured children. 83% of secured children remain unharmed in an accident (source: German Road Safety Organisation, Information sheet #4, May 2009). The vast majority of accidents – 87% – are frontal and side-impact collisions (source: bast – Federal Highway Research Institute, Booklet F 67, 2007), which is why we recommend always using a child car seat. Every seat, regardless of the design, ensures a much higher level of safety compared to driving without one.

Children should be transported in a rearfacing position for as long as possible, preferably up to approximately 4 years (18 kg). In a frontal collision, the enormous force of impact is distributed evenly across the back of the child car seat, significantly reducing the strain on the neck, head and chest.

All Group 1 CYBEX child car seats (weight class 9 – 18 kg) are fitted with a height-adjustable safety cushion. Resembling an airbag, the force of an impact is distributed across the entire surface of the cushion and absorbed by energy-absorbing materials. This particularly protects the sensitive neck, head and shoulder areas.

CYBEX advises strongly against simple booster seats for bigger children, because without a backrest, the head and body are not protected in a side-impact collision. All CYBEX child car seats feature a side-impact protection, which systematically absorbs the forces during these types of accidents.

For children in Group 1 (9 – 18 kg) CYBEX is moving away from forward-facing seats with a harness system because the strain caused by the impact in a frontal collision, particularly on the sensitive neck area, is considerably greater than with rear-facing seats or systems with safety-cushion technology. In the latter case, the force of the impact is absorbed across a greater area, significantly reducing the strain on the neck and spine.

Our car seats are tested by independent institutes on a regular basis and we are proud to announce that our car seats repeatedly achieve outstanding results in the most important European safety and consumer tests such as Which?, the German ADAC and Stiftung Warentest.

CYBEX fits all of its rear-facing ISOFIX child car seats with a load leg, which makes it almost impossible to install the seat incorrectly. The load leg provides extra stability and absorbs even more of the force of a frontal impact.

For CYBEX it was never enough to simply be satisfied with the success of fantastic products like the multi-award-winning infant carrier CYBEX Aton 2, which was a Stiftung Warentest test-winner twice over in 6/2012 with and without the ISOFIX base, and its successor CYBEX Aton 3. Instead, CYBEX strives to continually improve seemingly perfect products. In the accident safety category the CYBEX Aton 2 was even awarded a “VERY GOOD”. And yet the CYBEX engineers got back to work to analyse and implement the latest developments in the area of child safety in order to guarantee the best possible safety for your child. The goal was not just to improve the predecessor models, but to completely redesign the carrier in light of the latest developments in safety technology and on the evaluations of the latest crash-test results. In strict accordance with the D.S.F. Innovation Principle, the focus in the development of the Aton Q was exceptional design and sophisticated ergonomics, optimised safety, as well as improved functionality. In terms of active safety, the Aton Q has a new, height-adjustable headrest with an integrated harness guide. In combination with the advanced L.S.P. System, the side-impact protection of the energyabsorbing carrier – which has already achieved a rating of “VERY GOOD” – has been further improved.

One of the biggest challenges for safety engineers is to develop the best possible transportation of premature babies and very small newborns, whose neck muscles and reflexes are not yet well enough developed. Unfortunately this often leads to the babyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head tipping forward while it sleeps, which can lead to serious breathing problems.

CYBEX PLATINUM stands for the aesthetic fusion of safety and functionality with a user-friendly product and exceptional, iconic design. In particular, the CYBEX PLATINUM products stand out for their details. Although they often go unnoticed, the details are what ensures a constant feeling of safety. For example, the integrated, extra-large sun canopy disappears elegantly behind a colourcoordinated visor. For maximum UV protection of babyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skin, the integrated convertible awning fulfils the stringent, Australian UV50+ sun protection standard. It can be extended incrementally, offering not only perfect sun protection but also protection against wind and rain.

Together with German doctors and midwives, and taking into account the findings of many tests, a new function was developed that enables the flattest possible lying angle between head, neck and chest. The risk of suffocation is thereby significantly reduced. By adjusting the headrest the sitting angle changes automatically and the infant carrier grows with the child. With this integrated automatic adjustment function, the carrier also offers bigger children more room and comfort.

Safety, design and mobility in one. The design DNA of the Aton Q extends across all PLATINUM products and is also present in the CYBEX pushchairs. With the help of a simple adapter, the infant carrier, together with the CYBEX pushchairs turns into a clever and visually harmonious travel system. The Aton Q can also be combined with many other-brand prams and buggies to form a travel system (see the CYBEX website). In accordance with our safety philosophy, which emphasises ease of use in general and the ISOFIX system in particular, an ISOFIX base for the Aton is also available. The Base Q-fix is installed in the car with the ISOFIX connectors, providing additional stability and safety. The infant carrier can be easily snapped into the base which can be used without having to additionally secure it with the car seat belt. An indicator visually confirms that the seat has been installed correctly. Alternatively it can be secured with the car seat belt in vehicles that do not have the ISOFIX system.

Cloud Q: luxury travel redefined The Cloud Q is the latest result of our ongoing research. The infant carrier builds on the strong tradition of previous CYBEX Premium infant car seats, while improving upon their already reliable and unique features. The result is a perfect symbiosis of phenomenal protection and a new kind of travel system for outstanding safety in and outside of the car.

A new function of the Cloud Q is that it can be changed to a horizontal position outside of the car. Statistically, the risk of injury in ECE Group 1 forward-facing child seats with a conventional harness system (9 – 18 kg, approx. 9 months to 4 years) is significantly higher compared to Group 0+ rear-facing baby seats (0 – 13 kg, 0–approx. 18 months) in the event of a head-on collision, as the child’s head is still bigger and heavier in relation to the body. In this stage, a baby’s head is equal to 25% of its overall body weight and the neck, muscles and spine are still not fully developed. In a forward-facing car seat with a conventional five-point harness system, the shoulders of the child are held back in a head-on collision, while the head is flung forward with enormous force.

Consequently, a rear-facing child seat reduces the risk of injury in a head-on collision significantly. Statistics from countries with mostly rear-facing Group 1 child seats (e.g. Sweden) show that the risk of injury in Group 1 seats compared to seats in Group 0+ remains stable. In markets with mainly forward-facing Group 1 seats with harness system (e.g. UK, Germany) the risk of injury in comparison to Group 0+ seats rises significantly. Doctors, accident researchers, as well as consumer and health organisations such Stiftung Warentest, Germany’s biggest motoring club ADAC or the DVR (German Road Safety Council) therefore recommend to prolong the times and use that children travel rearfacing beyond Group 0+.

In rear-facing car seats, however, the force of an impact is distributed evenly over a large area, significantly reducing the strain on the neck, head and chest. The child seat works like a protective shield and protects the sensitive head and neck area. 51

The new width adjustment works hand in hand with the L.S.P. System Plus – an optimised Linear Side-impact Protection. The force of a side-impact collision is systematically reduced by the additional safety cushions as well as the shoulder and head protectors. At the same time the body’s kinetic energy resulting from an accident is immediately absorbed and the head is actively directed into a secure position.

A further building block in the comfort package of the Solution Q2-fix is a system of mesh ventilation channels that run through the backrest and seat components. Air can circulate through ventilation holes on the front of the seat and under the seat cover, and is channeled away from the child by additional openings in the backrest. This ensures a comfortable sitting temperature even on hot days. What’s more, the covers are easy to remove and are machine-washable. An extra summer cover is also available.

The new CYBEX safety pads on the inside of the head protector provide an extra level of side-impact protection. The absorbent materials reduce possible stress on the sensitive head area and prevent the head from being thrust too far forward in case of a side-impact collision. Accident analyses show that side-impact collisions occur half as frequently as frontal collisions but cause worse injuries. Every fourth car accident is a side-impact collision, which is why CYBEX equips all of its child car seats, without exception, with side-impact protection. In case of a side-impact collision, the side protectors on the child car seats for bigger children prevent the child from coming into contact with the car window and also protect the upper body. Providing maximum protection for the child in case of a side-impact collision is an important pillar of our safety concept.

RECLINING BACKREST The reclining backrest adjusts perfectly to the car seat and enables easy installation in different vehicle models. Although the sophisticated construction of the Solution Q2-fix incorporates many passive and active safety functions, attention was also paid to making the seat lightweight. Weighing just 7.6 kg, the seat is perfect if you have to frequently take it out of the car or move it to another vehicle.
