Planning to be an exhibitor at Expo?
If you plan to be an exhibitor at Expo 2013, now is the time to start planning. Here are tips that will help your Expo 2013 experience be successful. 1. Booth format — What do you want to showcase in your booth? New products, additional services or different applications? What look do you want to achieve? Start an Expo file and put together thoughts and ideas that come up and review them over the next few months. 2. Photos — Photos add appeal to booths and showcase your work. Take photos now of before and after work done and organize them in a binder or blow them up for display so attendees can view the quality and detail of your craft. 3. Personnel — Staffing your booth is key to success. Decide who will be your first point of contact with the public and which days and hours they will work in the booth. If you would like more information about training for exhibitors, contact the NPBA office for details. 4. Budget — How much can you spend on Expo? Create a budget including such items as personnel, banners, handouts, photos, brochures, business cards, etc. 5. Vendor Participation — Talk with your vendors or suppliers to see if they would like to participate in your booth with products/ personnel or financing your booth. Speaking of planning, putting together the Expo is a full-scale production that takes a cast of many in order to be successful. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, contact FaLeana at faleana@npba.info.

Indexes of consumer confidence are growing, sentiment has surpassed its pre-recession level Recently released measures of consumer sentiment indicate that consumers’ confidence is growing. Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan reported that its Consumer Sentiment Index rose by 5.5 percent to settle at 82.6. This is the fourth consecutive monthly gain for the index. By comparison, the Consumer Confidence Index, produced by the Conference Board, grew by 5.7 percent over the month of October, its third consecutive monthly increase. Improvement in the Consumer Confidence Index largely reflected a rise in consumers’ views of the present situation relative to their expectations of the future. Consumers’ appraisal of the present situation over the month of October rose by 15.4 percent while their confidence in the future improved by only 1.8 percent. Although both the Consumer Confidence Index and the Consumer Sentiment Index have shown sustained improvement since 2009, even exhibiting a quick recovery after the federal debt ceiling was raised in late 2011, the Consumer Confidence Index is still 79.7 percent of its pre-recession level, but the Consumer Sentiment Index has surpassed its precession level by 8.5 percent.
Despite consumers’ improved assessment of present conditions, they remain relatively more optimistic about the future. The Consumer Confidence Index of Present Conditions is 26.8 points below the Consumer Confidence Index of Expectations. While consumers’ views of the present have steadily improved since February 2009, their expectations for the future have risen faster. Since February 2009, consumers’ views of present conditions has grown by 36.0 points, but their expectations of the future rose by 55.6 points. Immediately following recessions, consumers tend to be more sanguine about the future relative to the present, but consumers’ views of the present ultimately exceeds their expectations for the future.
Recent changes in consumers’ views of the present situation partly reflect their assessment of the present employment situation. Although a greater share of respondents continue to cite jobs as “hard to get” as opposed to “plenteous,” this gap has narrowed. Since peaking in November 2009, the difference between the share of respondents citing jobs as “plenteous” relative to the percent that describe jobs as “hard to get” has fallen by 17 percentage points. The convergence in consumers’ perception of the present employment situation is the result of a decline in the number of consumers holding the view that jobs are “hard to get” and an increase in the number of consumers that believe jobs are “plenteous.” Since November 2009, the share of respondents describing jobs as “hard to get” has fallen by 9.8 percentage points to 39.4 percent while the share of consumers that believe jobs to be “plenteous” has risen by 7.2 percentage points to 10 percent. Despite starting from a very low level, the recent growth in optimism over the present employment situation should ultimately influence consumers’ willingness to spend.

Dear Donna Donna L. Knifsend
Dear Donna Can you tell me what business succession planning is and whether my husband and I need to worry about it for our small business?
Answer:
You and your husband definitely should discuss succession planning with a qualified professional team including your attorney, accountant, tax advisor and insurance agent to determine what may be appropriate based on your circumstances, concerns and desires. Business succession planning is a process for identifying and developing people with the potential to fill key leadership positions in a company. Every business should have some form of succession planning to help complete projects (or other business) and wind up, sell or continue the business in the event of death, incapacity or retirement of the owner. Think of business succession planning much like preparing your personal life in case of an emergency or death. Most people understand that personal affairs should be in order with wills or trusts, medical and financial powers of attorneys or special appointments for a smooth transition in the case of death, disability or an emergency. Your business should be given equal consideration. Do you have your business affairs in order in the
event of death, disability or retirement? Do you have a successor who is experienced to step in and run the business? With 2013 around the corner, now is the time to seek your annual business and legal check-up. There are many issues involved in succession planning, both personal and business, that should be discussed in detail with your professional team. Here are a few considerations to get you started: 1. Make sure that your legal and business documents (i.e. will, trust, powers of attorney, corporate books, financial records personal and business, contracts, insurance policies and licenses) are updated. 2. Make sure that account numbers, passwords, location of documents (including checkbook) are available for your successor. 3. Have your business contracts, ledgers, suppliers, customer information and a list of trusted professionals available to assist your successor in the event of an unforeseen emergency or death. 4. Considered a buy/sell agreement for the business. 5. Make sure that all of your documents have dispute resolution clauses. 6. Make sure that you have enough liquidity to cover immediate business and personal needs. “Key” personnel insurance policies are an option for the business. For additional information on succession planning, the Washington State Bar Association (www.WSBA.org) has brochures for downloading. To contact Donna Knifsend, Esq. PC, call 360-670-9406 or e-mail her at LawsuitPrevention@att.net. Disclaimer: The advice given herein is strictly for informational purposes only and does not reflect advice to the readers. NPBA October Candidate Forum
NPBA members had the opportunity to hear from county commissioner candidates Maggie Roth and Mike Chapman on Oct. 18 at the Red Lion in Port Angeles. The evening started off with a status report and update by the following individuals on three important issues that NPBA is tracking: Shoreline Master Program, Jo Anne Estes; Carlsborg Sewer Project, Don Bulter; and Dungeness Water Rule, Greg McCarry. Next up were the county commissioner candidates Maggie Roth and Mike Chapman. The forum was moderated by Donna Knifsend and Annie O’Rourke and the candidates were asked a series of questions that had been prepared to determine each of the candidate’s positions on building industry-related issues. Questions from the audience were taken at the end of the evening. The NPBA Board convened a special meeting after the forum and voted to endorse Mike Chapman given his knowledge of priority concerns to the building industry. Special thanks to the NPBA Government Affairs Committee: Jo Anne Estes, Donna Knifsend, Greg McCarry and Annie O’Rourke for putting together a terrific evening, packed full of information for NPBA members to better inform their vote.

Derek Adamire began his concrete and excavating company in 2009. Now with a small crew and a variety of heavy equipment, Derek is able to offer competitive bids for everything from smaller residential jobs to larger commercial projects.

Several general contractors rely on Derek as a subcontractor for dirt work, site prep, curtain drains, foundations and other concrete work. He also works directly with homeowners on their projects. In addition to excavators and dump trucks, Adamire’s equipment list includes a screen which, in some cases, allows him the ability to create material such as pea gravel, drain rock or top soil by sifting excavated soil on-site which can reduce the need to truck those materials in. Recently completing two different Quad-Lock projects, Derek believes that Quad-Lock insulated concrete forms offer an energy-efficient alternative for basements and foundations. This labor-saving system eliminates the traditional process of removing concrete form boards and installing insulation, since insulated concrete panels remain in place after concrete is poured. The insulated panels also increase the R-value and fire rating as well as sound deadening qualities of the walls. Derek Adamire shops primarily at Angeles Millwork for his supplies. “They offer fair prices, plus they all know me by name. I believe it’s better to deal with people who know me. Plus the new custom rebar service at Angeles Millwork saves me time. They recently bent rebar for a project that seemed to call for more rebar than concrete,” says Derek.
