Bowling tournament When you hear the term, “striking out,” pity is usually given and consolation pats on the back ensue. But when the NPBA “STRIKES OUT,” high fives are given all around! On Feb. 23, the NPBA hosted its 4th Annual Bowling Night at Laurel Lanes in Port Angeles! Eight teams came to battle but only three teams walked away with their heads held high and trophies in hand, knowing that next year, the title of champions they will have to defend! Here is a breakdown of the Best of the Bowlers (and the not so best).

Lakeside Industries showed the 40-plus people who participated

in the 2013 Bowling Showdown that they had swagger for days and bowling skills to match when they walked away with FIRST PLACE! George Peabody was overheard telling a spectator, “I came, I bowled, I conquered!” Although at time of publication … such a quote could not be confirmed.

In second place, with not quite as swollen heads, was Team Clawson Construction. Those 10 little pins didn’t stand a chance against Kevin Russell’s stellar skills and unwavering determination, as they just FELL DOWN in utter shame!

Holding the trophy high, Kevin,

Niamh, Tracy, Danny and Missi let out a victory cry that was heard by all … in a 5-foot radius.

Rounding out the top three was team Drafting Solutions! This motley crew of bowlers was headed up

by Annie O’Rourke, who has never bowled in her life. Knowing that she was going into combat grossly unprepared, she surrounded herself with men. Men … who for some reason or another, were not asked to be on other teams. Oh, and a stranger off the street. Yet because of her impressive geometry skills,

The North Peninsula Building Association, after nearly 20 years located at the Midway Center in Port Angeles, has moved to SEQUIM! FaLeana and the crew could not be happier to be located in downtown Sequim, in an office that is bright, cheery and a lot more comfortable to use! Although we are just moving in, and boxes are still stacked to the ceiling, we would love to have you stop on by for a visit!

We are holding our open house in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk that draws hundreds of people to the downtown streets of Sequim. Bowling Continued........ she was able to put the ball onto a trajectory that forced the pins to the ground!

Then there was Team Estes. Walking away with the worst team score of the night, Team Estes proved that … well … they were there.

But the crown jewel of the night, the most coveted of awards, the end all and be all of bowling trophies, was given to the beautiful Maureen Pfaff of Team First Federal. Titled the “Floater Award,” this level of distinction was given to the player with the BEST WORST score of the night.

Way to go Maureen. Way to go.

In conclusion, to all the teams that participated: First Federal (which was a lane sponsor), Lakeside Industries, Sherwin Williams, DelaBarre Construction, Clawson Construction, Estes Builders, NTI Engineering and Surveying and Drafting Solutions/Kreps Construction, we thank you greatly for your support and participation in such a fun event! Free WSU Extension Energy Program Classes offered in Port Angeles!

Energy Code Compliance Training, 9 a.m.-noon This course focuses on changes to the residential energy code that will go into effect with the adoption of the 2012 IECC with Washington state amendments on July 1.

Discussion will include additions, changes and deletions to the 2012 IECC that will be enforced in Washington. Excellent course for building department employees, builders, sub-contractors or designers. Instructors are Gary Nordeen, Luke Howard, Emily Salzberg.

Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ) Training, 1-4 p.m.

Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ) Training (4-hour course) What happened to the Washington Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ) Code? The code previously was a stand-alone code in Washington. As

of July 2010 the VIAQ Code is gone, however the requirements are still in place. These requirements can be found throughout the state amendments to the IRC, IBC and IMC. In this 4-hour course provided by the WSU Energy Program Energy Code Support Team, participants will gain an understanding of Washington VIAQ requirements in both new and existing construction, in addition to building science and healthy indoor air quality fundamentals. Estes Builders presents annual trade partner awards Top Tier Trade and Supplier award winners for 2013 were named at the 11th Annual Estes Builders Trade Partner and Supplier Forum held March 22. “This annual gathering is a time for all of us to collaborate, align our focus for the year ahead and appreciate those who partner with us to advance our quality practices,” said Mike Lyckman, construction manager for Estes Builders.

Estes Builders presented homebuilding awards to Tracy’s Insulation, Tom’s Plumbing, Tri-County Truss and Quality Encounters.

Organizational achievement awards went to Chuck Starr Construction and Strait Floors.

Tom’s Plumbing, Sequim Property Services, Mangano Construction, Thomas Building Center, Kris Kemper, Marlene Davis and Brian Cays were recognized for going the extra mile.

Meeting attendees included all trade part-

ners, suppliers and service contractors involved in the building of Estes Builders custom homes and paired living homes in Sunland North.

Founded in 1989, Estes Builders designs and constructs custom homes throughout the Olympic Peninsula including Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend and Port Ludlow.

Health Care Reform

Quick Facts: What it means to you Health Care Reform Tip – New Mandated Limits on Waiting Periods

Under the Affordable Care Act – All group health insurance plans must now abide by a new mandate concerning waiting periods. For plan years beginning on or after January 1, 2014, a group health plan or health insurance issuer offering group health insurance coverage shall not apply any waiting period that exceeds 90 days.

A waiting period is the period of time that must pass before coverage for an employee or dependent who is otherwise eligible to enroll under the terms of the plan can become effective. For this purpose, being eligible for coverage means having met the plan’s substantive eligibility conditions (such as being in an eligible job classification or achieving job‐related licensure requirements specified in the plan’s terms).

Note that this rule affects all employers who offer group health insurance to their employees regardless of the size of the company. This is something that will affect each company differently so make sure you understand these new requirements and be prepared to make changes if necessary for 2014 as this is a big change for many plans our members currently have in place.

Celebrating 15 years Jesse Wilson – Retail Sales at

Angeles Millwork & Lumber Company When Jesse Wilson began working at Angeles Millwork & Lumber Company in 1998, his first assignment was to help fill the shelves of the brand new store with inventory after the original building was damaged by a snowstorm. Then, when the company transitioned to employee ownership in 2004, Jesse chaired the newly-formed Employee Ownership Committee. Carbon Monoxide Alarms The requirement for mandatory carbon monoxide alarms for all new construction has been in place since Jan. 1, 2011, as adopted by the State Building Code Council (SBCC) as part of the 2009 code cycle.

Adoption of rules by the SBCC affecting carbon monoxide alarms in existing residential buildings initially were deferred but are now in place as follows: As of April 1, 2012, when a permit is issued for an alteration, repair, addition or creation of additional sleeping rooms, the installation of a carbon monoxide alarm will be required.

Code requires the seller of any owneroccupied single-family residence sold on or after June 26, 2009, to equip the residence with carbon monoxide alarms. A new law went into effect June 7, 2012, that requires amendments to the seller’s disclosure forms in purchase and sale agreements, to ensure that the responsibility for placement of carbon monoxide alarms is that of the seller.

As of Jan. 1, ALL buildings that are classified as residential occupancies (including rentals homes, duplexes, apartments, etc.) must be equipped with carbon monoxide alarms, with the exception of owner-occupied single-family residences occupied before July 26, 2009.
