Traveler’s diary It seems unbelievable, but yes, I have been nearly two years since I began this wonderful journey through the bowels of Fallalàndia, a breath of my life, well know how much I pondered that decision, I still remember the agonizing feeling of vertigo that tormented me ... and now, near the end of the journey, I can verify that such fears were groundless, Fallalàndia has given me much more than you might expect, has given me the opportunity to meet you and know me better, to strike up a great friendship with many of you, to command a ship consists of a large family, whose residents sometimes passive, emerge with overwhelming force when it comes to joining forces for completing any project successfully propose, and at that moment that magic is when you invade, envelops you and you spread. INTRINTRODUCTION “Fallalandia” (Falla Plaza de Cervantes in Paiporta, it’s also known as Falla del Mercat), began in 1974 under the thought that “to be a person who takes part of the “fallas” is a sacrifice today as tomorrow”. It brings us a world of enjoyment, fantasy and spirit of self-improvement focused on the activity of the “fallas”. LOCATION Fallalandia takes up the Cervantes square in Paiporta and its surrounding area (picture 1). Fallalandia shows their monuments till15th March to 19th March every years. The monuments are shown in the uncovered part of the square, where different stands where located in the past. These stand where put up and disassembled every day, nowadays there is only one stand with these characteristics. The are that Fallalandia has in order to put up as much the big monument as the childish monument, is over 528m2 This availability diminishes for several motives: on one hand it is necessary to leave a prudential distance with the frontal part of the building of the market to avoid damages during the ceremony of the ‘Cremà’ (when the monuments are on fire) and to allow to develop the commercial activity of the enclosure during the mentioned dates; on the other hand it is necessary that the monuments where removed so far as possible Fig. 1 of the palm trees that surround the enclosure; and finally the free circulation is necessary around the monuments in order to be able to contemplate them. The plane of the picture2 reflects the habitual location of the monuments and other points of interest as for example the band’s planking, the refreshment stall, etc ORGANIZATION Fallalandia is composed by persons of all the ages named “falleros” and “falleras”, they contribute in the 80 %, approximately, of the income of the annual budget. They are divided in two commissions, adult commission and childish commission. The children that are among 0 to 13 years old form the childish commission and people that are older than 13 years old Fig. 2

integrate the adult commission. “Fallalandia” is governed by an annually elected president who is helped by the board that he himself proposes. Periodic meetings are realized every Friday where there are proposed and approved the guidelines of the current year. It is an obligation of every “fallero” to pay the agreed assessment. It is a right of every “fallero” to enjoy as much as possible. It is recommendable that every “fallero” acquire the responsibility of help in the tasks that stem from the fallera activity. Every year the “falla” is represented by two “fallera”s, one of the childish commission and other one of the adult commission, who hold the ambassadresses’ charge of “Fallalandia”. There is another kinds of components in the structure: a) Honor’s “Falleros”, who contribute voluntarily an economic disinterested quantity to help to the good local development. b) Advertisers of the ‘llibret’, that as his name indicates, collaborate economically in the making of the traditional annual ‘llibret’ of the “falla”. c) Disinterested collaborators for concrete acts (“Cavalcada del Ninot”, “la plantà”, dinner of Honor’s falleros”...) OBJECTIVES The principal objective of “Fallalandia” is to achieve that all his habitants enjoy and take part of the “falleras” holidays under an environment of warmth and respect. Other objectives of minor importance are: a) To obtain the best possible awards in each of the activities where “Fallalandia” compete. b) To realize cultural activities without fortitude of lucre. c) To spread and to exalt the “fallas” holiday. STADISTICS In the first year of existence of Fallalandia his census was provided with 70 adult members, of the childish members there is no documented information. At present there is a whole of 541 “Falleros”, 309 adults and 232 children. 15

TÍPICAL PRODUCTS Fallalandia has always stood out for his good gastronomy. Especially for his home-loving sweets: rollets, paciències, suspiros, brazos de gitano, cocas, etc. As more destacable (en el cap i casal) paellas and doughnuts are the classic one, but Fallalandia differs for being a specialist also in rice in pan (arròs en perol), lima beans (fabes), fried cabbage or garlic arriero. drinks: a) In the fallas week: a. ‘Colpets’. Fallalandia, City of the Fallas, offers to all his visitors’ lovers of the night a wide program of night activities, it is what we name, the Route Golfa. Anecdotally, at that the moment they received the award were the Presidents, although Alfonso had been president before, when he was a child and later, when he was already in the adult commission. None of them had, or has been presidents, but all of them have done an unquestionable work in the commission. Ximo Tarazona, Vicent Ferrandis “el raquetero”, Consuelo Fernandez, Piedad Perez, Amparo Yago, Maria Tarazona “la Cupela” and Maruja Tarazona “la Corona” were the distinguished falleros that year. You can listen to them speak about: lotteries, quotas, Honour Falleros, secretarial, census, exaltations, gastronomy ... with them you could do a ‘crash course’ of all that surrounds Fallalàndia. Coriusly in 2007, received the Bunyol Paco Muñoz “el Chato” and his wife and his sister Teresa Ferrando and Amparo Muñoz, one of the family sagas of our commission. Also Maria Teresa Renovell, Adelina Arce and Trini Marí (FM 2004) received the important ‘Bunyol’. And family stories were repeated in 2008: the award was given to Salvador Folgado “el Metge”, Conchin Valero his wife and his eldest son Salva Folgado. Lola Ferrando also accompanied them. In 2009, it was time for younger falleros, who was born in Fallalandia and who saw how it was growing: Miguel Angel Andreu “Huesa” and Paco Moreno “Chon”. Children who have grown up in the ‘falla’ and that among other charges they have taken (which are many) they were presidents in 2001 and 2002 (Huesa) and in 1994 and 1995 (Paco). Do not get bored, we are finishing! Conchin Císcar and Maria Antonia Masiá were the lucky women in 2010. In 2011, it was the turn of Trini Mateu, Maria Jose Feliciano Gomez, Jesus Mari “el Capella” and Marino Fuertes. Fire and Falleras: visual icon of a cuty

A souvenir is the object I defined the memories that are related to a city or place we concreto.Si around the center of Valencia, we can see the image that the city sold to the world, what defines us, we characterizes and makes us different: fire, falleres and paella. We discussed topics, folklore and gastronomy, identity and differentiating three pillars of any society that serve to synthesize its characteristic features and generate a distinct brand image in the collective imagination. In this sense we have to highlight the contribution of faults. The visual strength of our party is iconoc that create a vision based on the same patterns unchanged by time. The fire, the figure of the woman Valencian paella and shed come before the Renaissance Valencian vision, where the homeland, love and faith are the main values. The art of poster in Paiporta: Francisco Raga Montoro Persons are characterized mainly by deeds and actions that he carries out throughout his life. Recognition of these facts often occurs not in the direct environment. (Except family and friends). This is the case of the protagonist of this section, Paco Raga, winner of three first awards in the competition of fallas poster in Valencia. He won in 1970, 1972 (Collaboration with Alvaro Beltran) and 1974.We’ve been with him in his house, a small Museum of artists where everything is located in their site, and look where you look you can breathe art. He is prepared as usual and affable as himself, he is already prepared to answer our questions. Where does the idea of making posters? During these years I worked in the lithograph called Hijos de Simeon Durá (one of the most important in Valencia). There was an artistic team with very good people. I was not part of this team because I worked in other Department, but we had facilities to develop ours artistic Works in the office. I had some knowledge of photography and painting, and these situations make me to prepare posters for the competition of fallas poster. When you decide to introduce the contest? I always saw how, my companions presented their works to the competition and in 1968 I decided to do it myself. I won third award 58
and it motivated me and encouraged me to prepare more. Why did you present to the fallas poster competition? Not only I prepared poster for the fallas competition, I participated in many others: “State Lotteries,� Fair of July in Valencia, and a poster for Salesians. In Salesians competition, I won the nationally award and I did not win the international award, because I didn’t put in my poster, children of other continents (Chinese, Indians, etc.) How did you feel when you got the first position? Happiness and enthusiasm. I bought my first car with the money I won in the competition Where did you look for inspiration? Because all three are completely different. Tell us, how was the process of the three? and what was the basic element to create them?. The 1970 poster I made it through a photomontage. I made some pictures to Donis on the terrace and after mounting them, came what you see, a burning body against the light. The 1972 poster I did in collaboration with Alvaro Beltran. To make the sketch, i prepared several negative and when I did, one night we began to paint, each one hand. In the end we arrived to a unit of color and criteria. In the poster, we draw a group of people that were burning. The 1974 poster is the strangest of all. It symbolizes a burning building or Valencia. This poster was selected by city council. After it was selected, we had to reproduce it at size of 2.00 x 1.25 meters. That poster was ended by Alvaro Beltran, because I fell ill, and he was who finished it for me. In all three, the flame or fire has been the basic idea. Did you cost much time and ideas in preparing the poster? No. When you implement it, the idea does not cost anything, it is, only apply the technique. At the time, each poster is a world. You spend a lot of time painting it and when you have to reproduce them to the poster of 2.00 x 1.25 meters, the work is twofold. I always tried to paint the same, but sometimes you improved it. Do you still the competition now? Do you know the new trends? No. The last years, the posters that won the competition are not to my taste. Do not carry the work that the old posters were done previously. Paco, it was a pleasure. Jorge Guarro, vice-president of JCF: ‘The falleros are the main pillar to promote the party’

It is clear that our party has an impact outside, we don’t know whether little or much, but it does. In addition to the regional houses scattered in Spain, there are the Fallas that take place in several South American countries, some of its members come every year to Valencia with the falleroplane, thanks to the program ‘Volver’. They are mostly elderly, Valencian, that in one point of their lives emigrated, this program is responsible from the Department of Institutional Development of the Generalitat Valenciana. There are other actions to internationalize the party. This Fallas Valencia Tourism guide to 35 international journalists for broadcasting the Fallas on television in China, Belgium, Japan and Finland. Or the companion ‘Ninotizate’ where through a game on-line, Japanese people can create a puppet with his own image and the winner gets a trip to Valencia. But in addition to public institutions, the Fallas should know sell themselves, show themselves, not just to attract tourism, that too, but in the interest of teaching huge abilities that this party has, in all its dimensions. That was perhaps one of the reasons why in 2005, Fallas Central Board launched the Office of External Promotion. Today we are meeting with their members. We are received by Antonio Marco, who is the leader, and Montse Catala, who holds the secretariat of the delegation, we also are attended by Jorge Guarro, vice-president of Central Board Fallera. We want to know more about their work, his opinion about the binomial Fallas-tourism and especially about the internationalization of the festival, the image we project outside. Although the name of the delegation is ‘External Promotion’, it does not mean that this promotion only be abroad, in contrast, is in Spain where they think we should start promoting the party. Since this delegation starts has made several actions: the first was to create a brand image, so they organized a contest for artists. At the same time they created a website dedicated to the Fallas outside Valencia, www.fallasfromvalencia.com, website in Spanish and English that right now it is being translated into Italian, French and German. Is there any project now?, Any initiative taking place? Antonio Marco: Unfortunately here the most important is the budget, and we are quite poor, that’s why we are using the website and emails to give information. Every week we have three or four emails from outsiders, especially journalists, asking us for pictures, routes to develop in Fallas or anything related to the party and us, if possible, give them all the information we know. Montse Catalá: Many airlines require us photos to publish in magazines ‘on board’ and we sent a little bit of everything, then they choose what they think are the most spectacular. We are also responsible from the ‘Nit del foc’. Jorge Guarro: That activity was done to retrieve a tradition but also and especially because the day 19 tourists have 60
nothing. Indeed in this event there are few falleros. But ‘External Promotion’ has also worked out of Valencia: Canada, Frankfurt, France ... Jorge, Antonio and Montse start a conversation about these experiences that is very interesting to us: In 2007 they led a falla to Frankfurt. Every January in Frankfurt there is a fair of festivities, ‘Christmas World’. Every year thematizes the entrance of the fair with a party, in 2007 were the Fallas. Within the fairgrounds stood a falla of Jose Francisco Espinosa, a falla of First B, and they also recreated the atmosphere of the offering of flowers. Jorge Guarro remembers that to do this they send an aerial photo of the Plaza de la Virgen and with panels, making an open square, they reproduced the photo on, with the image of the Virgin. ‘On the floor there were rose petals. They did quite original, although were not in the Plaza de la Virgen and there was no scaffold. That was the set for a dance group and a band that also take there’. In 2010 Montreal came here to learn to do fallas. In a neighborhood of Montreal (Canada) a fallas is planted in August. Thanks to a program to help to the rehabilitation profession they teach a work: carpenter, painter, etc ... and when finish they raise a falla. They asked ‘External Promotion’ to arrange a week to Valencia to learn all about the development of fallas. Montse Catalá explains: ‘we deploy for 7 days the delegation and we toured them to ‘Exposició del Ninot’, Pere Baenas workshop, Sergio Amat workshop, the Fallas Museum or the Fallas Museum in Gandia among others. “ Also in 2010, a falla goes to Leucate. In this town in southern France is celebrated the festival ‘Sun and Party, is a celebration of celebrations. From the organization we were asked to take a falla to show at the festival and in June the delegation went to Lecaute with the monument. Antonio Marco relates that ‘the most funny was that the falla was not static, when we arrived they put the falla on a carriage and the falla was going out, it was a sort of parade’. Obviously from public institutions also try to promote the fallas, especially in order to attract tourism, what is your relationship with the Conselleria of Tourism? A. Marco: Just a little. The only thing we do with them is an informative booklet, which we have published since four or five years ago. As often happens in these cases: Valencian institutions with the same objective working alone. But that would be another topic for discussion. J. Guarro: Sometimes, we have requested collaboration from ‘Valencia Tourism’ in some campaigns, for example, when the Japanese winners of ‘Ninotizate’ came here, or when they want to bring foreign journalists to interview the Falleras Mayores, or to give credentials, in an economic way we can not help but all we can, we do. How is the visibility of Fallas outside Valencia or Spain? 61
J. Guarro: very little! The promotion of the celebration comes at three levels: local, there are many people here who have no idea what the Fallas are, or what we do, then we have a national and international level. What happens is that the Fallas has just sold the ‘Cremà’, which is what TVE broadcast, and something of the ‘plantà’ and ‘mascletà’, no more. The problem is that we believe that the Fallas are very well-known, and that is not truth, there is a lot to do. And what can we do?, What is the problem? The problem is communication. How to communicate the Fallas? With the media, and that costs too much money. The solution is advertisement or do what the Conselleria o ‘Turismo Valencia‘ does: bring here international journalists to write about the Fallas. Even that Fallas are not as well known as the Carnival in Rio or Venice Carnival or the Oktoberfest ... it is more well known the Tomatina! The Tomatina in Buñol opens the news around the world because is a transgressive activity, that in other places would be forbidden, and is an activitty where everybody who goes can participate. Tourists that come to the Fallas are just an audience what is happening. When we thought the conversation was coming to an end we ask a question that, suddenly, open a new line of debate: falleros have interest in becoming our party known? Do we want to promote it? Jorge, Antonio and Montse have the same response, ‘falleros don’t mind’. In fact Montse adds ‘if Fallas is on weekend we complain because Valencia is full ...’ Jorge Guarro tells us that this year there is a falla that sell some packs for tourists called “Be Fallero for a day”, is a full day of activities. The ‘comision’ takes a group of tourists to the ‘desperta’, afterwards they go all together to the ‘entrega de premios’, dressed in costumes that falleros are provided them, they have lunch in the ‘casal’, in the afternoon paella’s show and at night they have dinner with falleros again. This day will cost 200 euros for tourist and Jorge says ‘ if the ‘comision’ knows how to sell that it will be full. We need to find different things for tourists fot they not to be just spectators, give the, a ‘blusón’, invite them to a sobaquer dinner... and this is an important source of money for the falla. When fallas realize that tourism can not only give money to hotels... But to do this you need to have people who want to do that, and people who know how to do’. Tourists enjoy ‘doing things’ that in other city they cant’t, that offers a plus for tourists. And this is what we should sell. Many visitors go back with the idea of trouble, noise, full restaurants, difficulties, etc.. What do tourists shock most about the Fallas? Jorge Guarro: Chaos. That word comes out almost always, is an ‘organized chaos’. And when they are told the entire organization exists behind, they are even more amazed. Montse: Prices. When you say how much the costumes and monuments are... and they ask How much is it?, it’s too expensive ti burn it!” And the events? Antonio: The Mascletà is what people more expect. George: But Mascletà has love and hate, is very difficult to understand. There are people who enjoy a lot and others don’t. 62
For a tourist it is very difficult to understand the philosophy of the party, isn’t ti? All the human and social aspect, sacrifice... George: This is very difficult, if they haven’t a guide to explain it, that it is difficult to understand. Is the Fallas a festival difficult to explain? All three give an affirmative answer. Although Montse thinks this can also happen to us with other festivals, they look very simple, as we see, but may be behind there are many other dimensions unknown. Instead Jorge and Antonio do believe that the Fallas are structurally more complicated to explain than others. ‘The Oktoberfest for example, is just a tent where every people sing, dance and eat inside. No more ‘ To all of this Jorge Guarro adds another handicap. ‘The fallas havent’t got activities so visual to appear in the broadcast. The ‘mascleta’ is noise, the ‘ofrenda’ is people walking... You could explain or show these but you should make reports, the only thing that works on tv is the ‘cremá’. After all this analysis, we ask if falleros should have more interest to promote the Fallas. Jorge Guarro believe that falleros are the pillar and must be more interested, but this does not happen, there is a clear example: in the JCF website fallers can sign the petition to support the party because of Fallas be declared by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage Tourist Interest ‘of about 200,000 fallers there are throughout the Community, only about 8,000 have signed. ‘This is the interest for promoting the celebration of the Fallas’. Finally, I could not interview you without knowing your opinion about changing the date of St. Josep to the famous ‘third Monday’, especially considering that one of the reasons is the promotion of the party and attract tourism. J. Guarro: Presidents have spoken, and most do not want the change, but if I have to give my opinion, I personally do not mind. Many times people appeals to a tradition that does not know when it is from... falleros do one thing two years and they say is a tradition... A. Marco: To delegation if St. Josep was Monday it would be better, it would, and here would be more tourists that if St. Josep was another day of the week. After commenting that the economic benefit would impact on all of us, we begin to say goodbye. We were very well attended, we learned many things we did not know and things made us think. There exist festivities of character similar to the fallas. We know that The Fallas are one-of-a kind, but they keep similarities with celebrations of the whole world. We can find festivities related to the fire, festivities caused by the seasonal change or traditions where catafalques are constructed with big artistic value and often with big symbolism. LA PLATA (Argentina) 15th March of an any year in Fallalandia In the night of the ‘Plantà’, night of illusion. It is 4 o’clock of the morning and we are seated in one of the banks of the square, covered with a blanket up to the neck waiting, as always, for the artist who should finish off the task and to be able to conclude one of the nicest acts of the week. The minutes happen and after several ‘joints’ the strangest and entertaining conversations outcrop that we could imagine. - I think there is not a festivity like this. - Sorry?, Are you sure? - Ok, excepting the Hogueras de San Juan, I don’t know nothing similar. What’s about you? - Yes, I know it!. In Argentina, in La Plata, There are falleros like here. - Ché what a curiosity!! (“Che” said by the valencian or the argentine people is roughly equivalent to “hey.”) - I’ve never considred it. We should investigate it, now it’s easy. - Now, you already have task for tomorrow, find out if there are fallas or not and tell us. Considering tha you enjoy loking for in Google… - Ok babies, come on, the artist has arrived In La Plata (Argentina) there exists the tradition of burning big figures on December 31. His meaning is similar to the Valencian festivity, since it is a question of destroying with the fire images that represent the bad thing that has had the year that it finishes. Now then, with the festivity fallera finds other analogies, as the artistic care of the figures, the existence of neighbors’ numerous commissions that plant it (approximately 200) and the fact that his fire accompanies itself on fireworks.

Are there more festivities? - Yes, I’ve found an article that explains the fallas in Honduras, a festivity that consists of the burning of big critiques with the context figures. In resume, pure satire, like here. Also the origin is the same, to burn old wood. It’s called the chimney day. This was a traditional festivity of the whole country of Honduras, in which the people usually burned the wood that was remaining him. But only in Trinidad Santa Bárbara, locality of approximately 1000 persons, it keeps on celebrating. They exhibit in a big avenue big figures that represent topics of social and political critique, and after a few days, all together burn them. - Hell, You’ve discovered loads of festivities!!... In Murcia there is similar other one, The ‘ Quema Raspajo ’, it is celebrated in the municipality The Tower of Gossips. It consists of the making of a scarecrow that honors the garden roots and vintagers of the locality. His reduction to ashes is the end of the celebrations. The night of ‘Guy Fawkes’ or Night of the Bonfires it is celebrated on November 5 in diverse points of the United Kingdom and in ancient British colonies. They burn a doll that represents Guy Fawkes, a Catholic who wanted to destroy the Palace of Westminster, but failed in the attempt. To celebrate it, king Jaime I of England ordered to burn bonfires every year in this date, in that it was burning a doll that was representing the 66

Don’t think more about it, the fallas are the one in the world, a festivity innimitable, impresionant and whit a lot of culture, Bye!! It will always fit the doubt of if ours is the best thing or not but, in spite of having similarities with these examples and many others that will exist all over the world, the flaws assemble the necessary thing to make them only: plastic arts, literature and poetry, gastronomy, tradition, music … all this joined the climate and the character of the Valencian one, they do of Fallalandia the only place. And it does not cost to copy.
