Celestial imagery has always captured my imagination and certainly that of artists and artisans across the ages. As you enter the Show, you will see marvelous interpretations from the celebrated designer vignettes and the Grand Entry Hall display, to the lounge, the Café, and of course, the exhibitor booths, filled with fabulous treasures. The San Francisco Fall Show is unquestionably one of the very best in the country and certainly the most important international show on the West Coast. It is always such fun to walk the aisles and shop, have lunch with a friend in the beautiful café, and take in a lecture or two. It is well known to have not only the best opening gala on the Show circuit, but also one of the most stellar lecture series. I am personally delighted to be supporting the Show as the Honorary Chair this year. And in turn, we are all supporting San Francisco’s youth with this Show as the major fundraiser for Enterprise for Youth, the vital nonprofit organization that helps prepare young people for success in adulthood through programming and internships. I’m told they are turning 50 years old next year and have served tens of thousands of youth since being founded. Quite impressive and bravo! Welcome to the 2018 Fall Art & Antiques Show, and happy shopping! Best wishes, Carolyne Roehm

GREETINGS FROM ENTERPRISE FOR YOUTH

I

n 1969, I started Enterprise for Youth in my living room. That year I graduated from SF State with an MA in Educational Counseling during the height of the campus riots aimed at shutting down the school. While leaving class one day, I descended into the restless crowd and found that something had changed: I could identify with the rioters. That experience stayed with me. I soon began to question why these students were so turned off. Then it hit me: no one was listening to them. Parents at that time were raising children with strict behavioral codes and teachers were orating, not listening. No one was stopping to inquire: "What are you good at? What are your interests? Your dreams? And, who do you want to become?" It occurred to me that some of these questions could be explored if I could create a nonprofit to give young people a chance to express themselves safely to a few of my friends, who had training in non-judgmental listening skills. Soon my living room was filled with students, desks, phones, and one 3M copier on the piano. It was a mess. I would spend my evenings making index cards for each student and sorting them according to zip code, making notes about their interests and abilities. This cumulative file of youth talent allowed me to match local businesses offering opportunities with the young people best suited to the job. And, so it began. After several years, Enterprise grew too big for my living room. We needed money to rent an office. Enter board member, Nancee Erickson, who had connections in the art and antiques show industry in New York and L.A., and she persuaded them to help her create a similar Antiques Show in San Francisco that would benefit our nonprofit. We found out that San Francisco is a decoration mecca and with help from some very generous supporters, the idea took off. Over the years the Show operated with a volunteer committee and was run for 25 years by Toby Rose, who co-founded the Show with Nancee. Now, almost four decades later the Show is the major fundraiser for Enterprise and a major annual San Francisco event. Today, Enterprise for Youth is stronger, more focused and more successful than ever. I credit the many thousands of high school students who have used its training successfully, found their first jobs, and have been able to pass their experience on to their own children. I didn't understand what the term "legs" meant until I realized it could be intergenerational. Gratefully, Gladys Thacher, Founder, Enterprise for Youth

ENTERPRISE FOR YOU T H INTERNSHIP:

J O N AT H A N RACHMAN DESIGN Jonathan Rachman Design hosted a student intern, Athena, this summer as part of Enterprise for Youth’s internship program. Enterprise CEO, Nínive Calegari, sat down with Jonathan and Athena to hear about their experiences. Nínive Calegari: Thank you for hosting Athena this summer. She had a wonderful experience.

to decorate their house. I told them I had never gone to interior design school, but I would give it a try and do my best. It was all word of mouth. That was about 16 years ago.

Jonathan Rachman: We loved having her. I tried to behave when I was around her.

NC: You've participated for years in the Fall Art & Antiques Show. We’d love to know what brings you back year after year.

NC: You are so funny. I’d love to learn more about your professional path. How did you get to where you are today?

JR: For me it’s always been the human factor. I believe in the cause and want to support the internships and programs, first and foremost. The work you do with youth employment is why I am here. Secondly, I’m a hoarder and I love antiques. The Fall Art & Antiques Show is so beautifully done and is one of the most fun parties in San Francisco! And I truly love the Designers Circle.

JR: My former education was in hospitality management. I was in corporate America for the longest time, but got burned out and became this evil corporate person, and I wanted to feel more human again. I left that and opened a flower shop. One day, a group of people crammed into my 100 square foot flower shop and watched me arrange flowers. At the end, a gentleman hired me to do the floral arrangements for his flagship store in Union Square. After that, he sent me to colleagues and celebrities, and I started doing events and parties. Soon, they began asking that I do not only the flowers, but the events: the lighting, the furniture, the menu, and whosits-next-to-whom. Eventually, someone asked me

NC: Tell me about why you hired an Enterprise youth as an intern. JR: When I was growing up in Switzerland, I worked half the year and went to school half the year, so I like the model of young people working while they 26

are learning. I also have gotten to where I am because of the many wonderful people who have helped me and I try to pay it forward.

A: The Enterprise training has totally prepared me for this internship. It taught me how to feel confident, how to present myself to my employer, and show them who I am. It has taught me to be myself and to feel comfortable because when you’re comfortable it makes your work so much easier and makes it more fun for you and for your employer.

NC: Athena, what did you love about your internship the most? Athena: This work is super personal. You see the impact you can make on the person. I went to an installation and you can see the happiness on the people’s faces. It showed me why I want to work with people.

NC: Fantastic. Is there another teaching moment that you thought was really powerful? A: Well, on my first day, I thought it was going to be an internship where you get coffee and run around to do things for your boss that they don’t have time for. But, I came in and Judith, Monica, Jonathan and I all carried things out, and put them into moving trucks. We literally hand-moved all of the equipment and all of the super expensive things into the place. It was my first day and I felt like we were a team.

NC: What will you take with you when this internship is complete? A: This experience gave me a whole new outlook. There are so many careers out there, different from what your parents do. I’ve learned that there’s just no limit to what I can do. NC: I am really proud to be building our design portfolio of internships because I believe that working in the creative fields is going to be essential to the future at work.

NC: Finally, Jonathan, why do you think it’s important to seek and create beauty? JR: I think the environment affects a person from a minute to an entire life. Beautiful things make you feel differently, for me it’s important to be surrounded by flowers. I think to spread the love, we have to honor beauty as it affects one's well being, as well as being with family.

JR: That is absolutely true. NC: In what ways do you feel the Enterprise training has been particularly helpful?

ENTERPRISE FOR YOU T H INTERNSHIP:

KENDALL WILKINSON DESIGN Kendall Wilkinson Design hosted a student intern, Joanna, this summer as part of Enterprise for Youth’s internship program. Enterprise CEO, Nínive Calegari, sat down with Kendall and Joanna to hear about their experiences.

Nínive Calegari: Kendall, thanks again for working with us. To kick off, tell me about your business.

KW: People like Joanna who are efficient, motivated, and really want to learn can take on more work. We always had interns because that’s how I started out. My internship helped me get my foot in the door. I think interns learn a lot because they get to wear a zillion hats. We’ve had some proactive interns design pillows, do furniture layouts, and even help me with my fabric line.

Kendall Wilkinson: We are a full-service interior design firm, primarily focused on high end customers’ residential homes and, to a lesser degree, commercial work. I also have a fabric line, and I’m working on a new indoor upholstery and drapery line with Fabrica, which is supposed to launch in 2019.

NC: You have been a supporter of the Fall Art & Antiques Show for many years. What brings you back every year?

NC: Oh, fun. How did Joanna impact your office? KW: She was super helpful, had such a great attitude, and was really fun to be around. She went on some very fun site meetings for which she helped organize project binders. Joanna created furniture templates for several projects, which is always really helpful, and it's not an easy task to get right. She also ordered and restocked items for installation kits, which is a huge task that helps us prepare for the installations.

KW: My mother was an interior designer and my grandmother was an antiques dealer, so we grew up with a lot of antiques. I’ve always thought the Show was so beautiful and fun. I started my own design and antiques store called Patina Atelier, so I wanted to support that industry and the Show. NC: What word of advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your footsteps?

NC: I wish I was there to experience that. Why do you think Enterprise internships are important? 28

Photos by Spencer Robinson

KW: The industry has changed a lot and it’s not as creative anymore, so I would say if you are going into interior design, find your niche. Find a way to design a furniture or fabric line, or have a store so you can put your own spin on it. Capitalize on your uniqueness because with the internet, everyone is just copying everybody. Take some business classes and become savvy in business.

NC: What do you think you will take with you from this professional experience? J: This experience taught me that asking for help is extremely important. Before I thought asking questions was something that you should never do because it wasted time. But now, I know that asking for help, asking for more work, and asking to make the most of what you can do is so important. The skills I have learned are tools I will forever carry.

NC: Joanna, in what ways did Enterprise’s job readiness training prepare you for this internship?

NC: Given you’ve now been engaged in the arts and design, do you have a clear sense about what you’re going to do in the future?

Joanna: I attended the training program before going into the internship. With a lot of encouragement and the variety of programs offered, and the support from the staff, Enterprise gave me an opportunity to discover my interests. I learned about LinkedIn, resume writing, and presentation skills, which I found extremely helpful because not only did it boost my confidence, but also improved how I talk to people. I learned new skills, such as leadership and communication, and tools, such as the money saving program, which was extremely helpful.

J: I want to say yes, but no at the same time. I see every opportunity as important, whether it be volunteering or working here during this internship. I’ve done a lot of things throughout the summers, and this internship has been drastically different, which I’m thankful for because I experienced something new. With every experience, I gather tools and skills I can use for the future. 29

THE SUN, THE MOON & T H E S TA R S Celestial Imagery in Art, Antiques & Design By Ariane Trimuschat

I

t is fascinating to think that two people on opposite

sides of the world can both be viewing the same sun,

moon, or stars at the same time. Although the moon

may look different, given our positioning on earth—a crescent in North America, or a boat in Asia—the skies are the one thing we on earth truly have in common. They bring us closer and remind us how small we are in the scheme of things.

“Art is the sun, moon and stars of the mind, the whole mind.” – Samuel Beckett sci-fi novel From the Earth to the Moon), to James Turell, and many other artists and artisans who depicted the heavens in their work, artists have always had a rich

Celestial bodies have enthralled us since time immemorial. The mysteries of the universe have long held our attention, and inspired creativity and explanation. We have created mythical beings for these bodies: Apollo, god of sun and light, Diana, goddess of the moon, and Asteria, goddess of falling stars. We see the man on the moon in the lunar surface, we wish on stars, and turn these astronomical objects into adjectives: a sunny disposition, a star is born, a moony temperament. We explain our personalities and foretell the future through the patterns of the stars and their position in the sky when we are born. From antiquity to today, artists and artisans have been equally fascinated with celestial bodies, depicting them in their work. The moon has signified virginity and purity, as well as madness, the sun, life itself, and stars have multiple meanings, based on the number of points given in a replicated drawing or their position in the sky. From Neolithic rock art, the first known recording of celestial phenomena, to Galileo, the first man to view space

subject matter in celestial imagery. You likely will benefit from satellites many times today alone: using your GPS, calling a friend, posting a photo on Instagram, checking the weather, or using your credit card. Most of these actions communicated with space. A human colony on Mars will very possibly happen in our lifetimes. With each year we explore further and deeper into the universe and learn and see more, but our curiosity and wonder will never diminish. We will eternally look upward to the heavens and here on earth, attempt to replicate what we see. The Sun, the Moon, the Stars, and the Zodiac greet you via the Designer Vignettes in the Grand Entry Hall of the Show. Four prominent designers took on the task of creating a setting based on the theme. Each worked with de Gournay to create a stunning custom wallpaper for the backdrop of their vignette. Take time to marvel at their creations as you enter the show, and read on to learn more about their visions and creative processes.

Terracotta rooftops are baking while summer breezes carry the distinctive perfume of these evergreens to the loggia of a villa nearby. The gentle metronome - like the trickle of a fountain - cools the air and provides music for the visitor who has settled in for an afternoon nap. the moon

madeline stuart Tell me the story.. About how the sun loved the moon so much.. That she died every night.. Just to let him breathe... ~Hanoko Ishii I'm thrilled that I was given the moon as the theme for my vignette. I'm inspired by its luminescence and in awe of its power over the sea. It lives in the dark, yet shines a light that can illuminate the shadows. Its ever-changing shape can take your breath away: an elegant sliver, a giant orb, the perfect half of a whole. How magical it is that you can look up and find a different moon on any given night! It's mysterious, romantic, magnetic, and magnificent. The vignette we've created was inspired by the work of Japanese artist Matazo Kayama, and features exceptional pieces of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean furniture, sculpture, and objects, all arrayed on a charred hemlock floor done in the manner of shou sugi ban. Madeline Stuart is a leading member of the Los Angeles design community whose projects reflect a collaborative relationship between architecture and furniture, function and form, client and designer. Over the past 25 years, the work of Madeline Stuart & Associates has been featured in numerous publications including, Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Veranda, Town & Country, House & Garden, and House Beautiful. The firm has been distinguished by its inclusion on the AD100, Architectural Digest‘s prestigious list of the top 100 design & architecture firms. Since 2010, Elle Décor has included Madeline Stuart on their A-List as one of the top designers in the country. Ms. Stuart lives in the Hollywood Hills and Santa Barbara with her husband, writer Steve Oney, and Beatrice & Mr. Peabody, professional Jack Russell terriers. 49

the wiseman group The Wiseman Group (TWG) drew inspiration from surrealist works by American artist and filmmaker Joseph Cornell. Several of his most arresting pieces are assemblages of photographs and objects infused with star imagery. His repeated celestial theme explorations hint at the artist’s fascination with astronomy throughout his prolific career. Two works, Cassiopeia 1 (1960) and Untitled Celestial Navigation (1958), caught our imagination as we collaborated with de Gournay to reimagine Cornell’s work as an ethereal wall covering. We simultaneously developed an astrolabe inspired floor design with Bay Area graphic artist Therese Moon to anchor our composition. Against a midnight backdrop, TWG juxtaposed a Red and Blue Chair by Dutch, De Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld. The iconic piece was thoughtfully customized by Stancil Studios to bring focus to its striking silhouette. It is paired with an unusual, early nineteenth century Spanish Colonial ebonized wood and brass inlaid table from Carlton Hobbs. The two are combined with contemporary elements from Japanese photographer and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto and Californian interior and furniture designer Gary Hutton. Sugimoto's Lightning Fields photograph contrasts black with white, while Hutton's sculptural accent table A5 gleams in polished stainless steel. Paul Ferrante's dramatic crystal star pendant is contributed by Hewn to illuminate the vignette. A natural talent with a deep appreciation for history, culture, art, and architecture, Paul Vincent Wiseman founded his eponymous design studio in 1980. His global perspective is evident in the firm’s quality and scope of projects and is balanced by his ability to relate to people putting everyone at ease. Placing emphasis on authenticity, he has built strong relationships with superb craftspeople and ensures that every project flows seamlessly for clients that include venture capitalists, investment bankers, and tech CEOs. Overseeing the design teams, each residence or commercial property designed by The Wiseman Group reflects its founder's iconic aesthetic. 51

the zodiac ken fulk

Upon hearing this year’s theme, I immediately began spinning a glittering tale of a 1980s-era “Zodiac Bar,” with bejeweled wallpaper representing the astrological signs centered around a giant radiating starburst. Visions of semi-precious jewel-encrusted glamour danced in my head: Christian LaCroix and Egyptian Revival mashed up with Elsa Schiaparelli and Cher in Bob Mackie. The fictional tale unfolded… The legendary “Zodiac Bar” was created in 1981 on the lower level of Mr. Fulk’s residence in a Russian Hill townhouse. Originally designed as a whimsical private lounge for entertaining Fulk’s closest friends including his muse, Denise Hale, and her coterie of jet-setting friends, the Zodiac Bar was a dazzling hideaway where guests often trickled in after midnight and departed at dawn. The unapologetic glamour of the intimate setting elevated the art of cocktailing and conversation.

Ken Fulk is a designer of experiences large and small. He is renowned for his layered interiors, high-concept brand identities, and over-the-top parties. The Virginia-born designer has spent the past 25 years developing a business elevating the daily lives of his clients, not only designing their homes, jets, restaurants, and hotels, but also directing birthdays, weddings, dinners, anniversaries, and family getaways. Leading a team of 60 architects, designers, branding, and event specialists in both San Francisco and New York, Fulk has expanded his impact around the globe. In addition to current residential work from Mexico to Miami and Provence to Provincetown, Ken Fulk is making his mark in New York designing three new restaurants including an aesthetically minded coffee company and the highly anticipated Legacy Records restaurant, cafe and bar at

The Zodiac Bar quickly became a fixture on the scene with celebrities, politicos, and titans of industry canoodling side by side. Within a year, the City was filled with whispers of scandalous activities and alleged affairs that all began and ended with the Zodiac Bar.

Henry Hall in Hudson Yards. NIGHT AT THE ZODIAC BAR ROUGH SKETCH

However a growing troop of angry neighbors, who were either sleep-deprived or simply jealous to be excluded from the shenanigans, would eventually bring down the Zodiac Bar. Based on a tip, the property was in full swing when it was raided by the San Francisco Police Department in the early hours of November 18th, 1983. Mrs. Hale managed to escape through a side exit into the alley, where her driver was always waiting with the motor of the Rolls softly purring. Mr. Fulk was arrested and put on trial in a notorious courtroom drama that ended with his exoneration.

H O L LY WO O D M O D E RN : A Look Behind the Book

Michael Stern Thursday, October 11 | 2:30 p.m.

H

ollywood’s homes of the stars have long held our attention and curiosity. For decades,

tourists have bought maps and boarded bus tours to see where the stars of their favorite films reside and where the stars of yesteryear once lived. Michael Stern takes us inside, discussing the intersection of celebrity culture and high-art modern architecture. He will share the narratives behind many of the celebrity homes, both the architectural side and the Hollywood history, and how these projects fit into the broad canon of Modernism in Southern California. Michael Stern is an author, curator, and artist. Tony completely redecorated the interiors and added pavilions, terraces, and sculptures of his own making throughout the garden. From 1972 until their deaths, Tony and Elizabeth “Beegle” Duquette continued to expand the house and gardens, and to invite their friends to lavish entertainments. Upon Tony Duquette's passing in 1999, Hutton and Ruth Wilkinson purchased the house "to save its life" and expanded the compound. For this talk, Hutton Wilkinson will recall the sixty-nine year history of the house illustrated by the brilliant photography of Tim Street-Porter and other famous photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. ior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look, an examination of the intimate connection of couture and interiors, is the first work on the two Parisian interior designers most closely associated with Christian Dior, the first study of the evolution of Dior’s aesthetic as seen through his houses, and the first study of the development of the Dior brand. After years of wartime deprivation, decorators Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy arrived like spring on a wintry design landscape. And, like the unabashedly luxurious, Belle Époque–inspired fashions of Christian Dior’s New Look, their designs, scented with grace, history, and connoisseurship, brought vital oxygen into the aesthetic atmosphere of mid-century France. Author Maureen Footer, an expert in French decorative arts and a former interior designer, evokes this heady atmosphere in her recounting of the lives and work of this influential trio, illustrated with a trove of evocative vintage photographs. She traces the trajectory of Dior from his coddled childhood in Normandy through his first career as a gallerist to his phenomenal success as a couturier. Dior tapped Victor Grandpierre, a photojournalist, to design his first couture house at 30, avenue Montaigne. Grandpierre created not only the chic, elegantly restrained look of Dior’s salons (pale gray walls, white moldings, and Louis XVI-style chairs) but also the template for the Dior brand, including typeface, logo, signage, and packaging—still followed to this day. Georges Geffroy, an aesthete and connoisseur of eighteenth-century antiques, shepherded Dior into the couture world with an introduction to the couturier Robert Piguet in 1937. When Dior acquired a townhouse in the fashionable 16th arrondissement, he asked both Grandpierre and Geffroy (who worked independently) to design the interior, assigning the private rooms to the former and the public rooms to the latter. The results were, like Dior’s haute couture creations, rich, sensuous, and refined. After Dior’s untimely death in 1957, both Grandpierre and Geffroy went on to design salons for other couturiers, as well as homes for aristocrats, Parisian socialites, fabulously wealthy ex-pats, and celebrated film stars and artists, ranging from Yves Saint Laurent and Marcel Rochas to Baron de Redé, Arturo López-Willshaw, Élie and Liliane de Rothschild, Gloria Guinness, Daisy Fellowes, and Maria Callas. These interiors, marked by luxurious fabrics, antiques, personally curated objects, clear colors, comfort, and old-fashioned ceremony, were featured in the shelter magazines of the day and were emulated all over the world.

“Master of the Chair.” That is how Danish furniture designer Hans J. Wegner is known all over the world. The CH24, popularly known as the Wishbone Chair, exemplifies Wegner’s reputation with excellence. Created from pure and sustainable natural materials, it is a brilliant icon of Danish cabinetmaking traditions represented for generations by Carl Hansen & Søn. The Wishbone Chair is shown with Wegner’s CH338 dining table.

CLASSIC DESIGN MEETS CONTEMPORARY LIVING: THE VALUES BEHIND OUR MAXIM Respecting Classic Architecture We focus on enduring quality; on timeless design that supersedes trend and gracefully ushers a home into its next era of life. Stewarding the Bay Area’s Past & Future We prize our gem of a region and take our role in its architectural future very seriously. It’s the chosen palette for our work, preserving its historic appeal while updating its usefulness and beauty. Understanding Contemporary Living in Traditional Spaces We bring homes into the present to serve the lifestyles of a new generation, sensitive to tradition, yet with spaces, flow and features that fit today’s living. Remembering Who Lives There We get that a home underpins all facets of life and appreciate the incredible intimacy of our work with clients, eschewing ego and arrogance to focus on features that support their lives in thoughtful ways. Forming a Partnership

Photo: David Duncan Livingston

We believe enduring partnerships are vital to successful outcomes, as told by our reputation for thorough documentation among builders and clients. We love what we do and work to ensure collective vision and pride in the homes we create.

elcome to the 2018 Show! Next year, Enterprise for Youth, the Show beneficiary turns 50 years old. Founded in 1969 by Glady Thacher, Enterprise has, for half a century, made a huge impact on the lives of San Francisco’s youth facing challenges. We are tremendously excited for this milestone and you’ll be hearing more about how we are celebrating this anniversary in 2019. This Show was founded as a fundraiser for this important and dynamic nonprofit and we are so thankful to everyone who supports our efforts to help improve the future of San Francisco’s youth. I encourage you to explore the Show. There is so much to do, and even more to see, and you can find all of that information right here in our Schedule of Events (page 42). Lectures, panels, wine tastings, cocktail hours, book signings, and there is always a seat for you in our beautiful Café. The Show is a unique opportunity to not only acquire the most incredible pieces offered by our international roster of dealers, but also to learn about art, antiques, design… the sun, the moon, and the stars! I am grateful for the support of the many people who give their time and resources to make this Show a success. Many of you have been listed and thanked earlier in this catalogue. I would like to call out a few: Our outstanding Exhibitors from around the world who bring the most stunning pieces to grace our aisles. I encourage all to visit their booths and ask questions! Suzanne Tucker, Chair extraordinaire, who has chaired the Show for four years now and makes it look so beautiful. I am truly grateful for all that she does. Toby Rose, who co-founded the Show 37 years ago, and is still today an advisor, supporter, and friend with a priceless knowledge of the Show. I am forever thankful to Nancy Gots, former Development Director for Enterprise for Youth, who left this year after dedicating a decade to our nonprofit. Her contributions to the Show, and to Enterprise’s mission, have been invaluable. We welcome her energy and enthusiasm back this year as a volunteer! We have an amazing team at Enterprise for Youth. This Show comes together due to the daily, year-long efforts of Margan Mulvihill and Sam Stanich. Thank you for your tireless work, long hours, and attention to detail. Huge gratitude goes to CEO, Nínive Calegari, Director of Finance, Shantel Weingand, Board President, Michael Franzia, and the Board of Directors. And thanks to the core team that brings it all together: our talented graphic designer, KC Hatcher; Show Blogger and Publicist, Vera Vandenbosch of Tucker & Marks, Production Manager, Megan Knight and Production team, Global Art Fair Productions, who builds out the Show; Linda Burns and her team at Burns & Associates Fine Printing; Dan McCall, Lucas Shoemaker, and Daron Jones of McCalls Catering & Events; event photographer Drew Altizer, and the staff of Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. On behalf of Enterprise for Youth, thank you to all who have made this year’s Show possible. Happy shopping!
