The San Francisco Fall Show is a benefit for the nonprofit, Enterprise for Youth. Founded in 1969, Enterprise empowers under-resourced San Francisco youth to reach their potential through transformative paid internship experiences supported by a community of employers, caring adults, and peers. One hundred percent of net proceeds from the Preview Gala, ticket sales, catalogue advertising, and sponsorships directly support the charity. No part of sales made by the Exhibitors is received by the charity. Enterprise for Youth

A WA R M W E L C O M E F R O M H O N O RA R Y C H A I R , INDIA HICKS My grandmother, a voracious explorer, was known to have slept with an altas under her pillow, and once returned home from Africa with an orphaned lion cub in her arms. My mother who also travelled extensively sat with Mahatma Gandhi at his prayer meetings during the Indian transition of power (my grandfather was the last Viceroy, hence my name). She met Haile Selassie in Ethiopia and describes the impressive cheetahs chained to the top of his palace steps. She even began life on a journey in Spain, born by mistake in Barcelona. My father, one of the world's most recognised designers also travelled, he found great beauty and inspiration through his journeys. I myself have been to remote corners of the world, once even being detained in Malawi for showing the backs of my knees, which is forbidden for a woman. I finally made my own home on a tiny, remote island in the tropics. So, as the 2019 Honorary Chair, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the annual San Francisco Fall Show and its theme of WANDERLUST. Wanderlust can kindle many things. Navigating the world—whether literally or figuratively—often starts with experiences discovered in one’s youth, which is why I love the mission of Enterprise for Youth. And I know a little bit about youth, I have five kids. I understand that for 50 years this foundation has engaged, mentored, and empowered San Francisco youth to chart a new course for themselves, through internships, job shadows, and other programs. It is an impressive legacy of good work and one that I hope you might continue to support after your attendance at this year’s show. So many congratulations to The San Francisco Fall Show for sharing 38 years of beautiful furnishings, decorative objects, art, and design, and to Enterprise for Youth for celebrating half a century of helping young people discover a much brighter future. Welcome to The 2019 San Francisco Fall Show. Sincerely,
13

WELCOME FROM THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA Dear Fall Show Guests, Fifty years ago, Glady Thacher responded to a call from young people who wished to develop professional pathways toward bright futures. Years later, those same youth went on to build successful careers, helping bolster the economy of our great state and our nation. Thus, Glady's brilliant foresight in developing Enterprise for Youth cannot be understated. Youth workforce development plays a vital role in catalyzing innovation and supporting a vibrant economy. We are relying on the next generation to lead, serve, and work towards a better tomorrow and Enterprise for Youth gives California’s youth a head start in this endeavor. The Fall Show, which benefits Enterprise for Youth, has been a beloved cultural event in the City of San Francisco for 38 years. As the oldest art and antiques fair on the West Coast, the Show advances San Francisco’s reputation as a world-class destination for the arts. We all have a role to play in supporting the next generation of leaders in California’s workforce. I commend Enterprise for Youth for the important work they do every day to help create a California for all. Sincerely,
Gavin Newsom Governor of California

ENTERPRISE FOR YOU T H INTERNSHIP: TUCKER & MARKS Suzanne Tucker of Tucker & Marks hosted a student intern, Naomi Kung, this summer as part of Enterprise for Youth’s internship program. We sat down to hear about their experiences. Suzanne, how did you get started in the interior design business?
Why do you think Enterprise’s internships for youth are important?
Growing up in Santa Barbara, the world was my architectural and horticultural oyster! I naturally gravitated towards the arts, art history, architecture and design when I was in college. I didn't set out with the intention of becoming an interior designer. I followed what I loved, worked for incredible people, had wonderful mentors, and it all fell into place.
When Enterprise interns have an opportunity to learn in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment, they gain so MUCH more than valuable skills and training. They acquire confidence, poise, and professionalism. And in turn, they serve as role models to their peers. As the Show Chair and long-time supporter of The Fall Show, what do you love most about the show?
Why did you host an Enterprise intern? First, because I love the mentoring process and second, because I believe in the “pay it forward” theory. I was lucky enough to have some amazing mentors early on in my career who introduced me to all aspects of the design business. It instilled in me the importance of sharing my knowledge not only with my own staff but with others as well.
The San Francisco Fall Show is one of the oldest and most revered shows in the country. Plus it has a terrific lecture series and the best opening night party bar none. For anyone interested in the decorative arts from contemporary to antiquities - buying, collecting, or simply learning - the show is not to be missed. It's a Bay Area "Must do!" of the fall social season with four wonderful, vibrant days filled with gobs of eye candy.
How has your Enterprise intern, Naomi, contributed to your office?
What impact has it had for you as a professional?
Naomi was a delight to have in our office! Not only is she bright and highly capable, she was eager to soak up as much as she could. A design firm was an eye opener for her and while her study of interest is business, I could see it was enlightening for her to see how a creative business functions.
It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that I am passionate about the decorative arts and decorating with art and antiques, so in that respect The San Francisco Fall Show is truly the highlight of the year. Every year, I have the opportunity to learn from our 24
amazing dealers and lecturers – and of course to discover unique and one-of-a-kind treasures.
Absolutely! It’s a rewarding experience for the intern but in many ways, it’s far more rewarding for us. To watch our youth get engaged, to learn, and build their experiences at such young ages, is the best reward for me!
inspiration presentation, I often put too much thought into little details, some were essential and others inessential. From that experience, not only did I learn to ask questions when I am unsure, but also to trust my own intuition. I also had a tough time adjusting to wearing business casual outfits to work, such as slacks and a button-down shirt. However, I was exposed to the sophisticated atmosphere, which provided me an insight into what my future will be like.
Naomi, how did Enterprise prepare you for your internship at Tucker & Marks?
Finally, can you share a fun tidbit about your experience?
My time at Enterprise taught me a lot about time management and professionalism. With this new skill set, I was prepared for the work environment at Tucker & Marks. Working on time management at Enterprise allowed me to do little things like arriving on time, staying organized, and completing tasks efficiently.
As fun as my internship was one of the most memorable events would be the mini photoshoot with Suzanne Tucker. Not only was I laughing and enjoying the time I spent with Suzanne and my supervisor, Tania, but I was also learning about design when we were getting our action shots.
Would you recommend that others host an Enterprise intern?
What do you think you will take with you from this professional experience? I will happily take away the efficiency and constant flow of motion of Tucker & Marks’ people. The hard-working nature and expertise each person at this company showed has inspired me to focus more on my future and work harder for what I want. Has this internship provided you with a better sense of what you might want to do in the future? If so, in what ways? My internship at Tucker & Marks helped me choose what area of business I want to pursue. Originally, I was interested in marketing and economics, but after witnessing the momentum and strength of Suzanne Tucker, I now am interested in pursuing a future in management or entrepreneurship. Learning and working at Tucker & Marks inspired me to hopefully one day start my own company or at least management a very successful one. What challenges did you face during your Enterprise internship? What did you learn from it? Throughout my internship, I faced two challenges: overthinking and adjusting to the professional setting. When creating design boards and a client

I learned how to turn my social media skills into marketing skills. If I had to come up with a name for my position at Zeterre, it would be “professional Instagrammer.” During the internship, I used social media to discover different architecture firms and spread Zeterre’s name. Additionally, I had the opportunity to look at architectural sketches and designs, which taught me to appreciate the effort put into creating different landscapes. Napa Ridge Napa Valley Premium Wines are to be savored. The grapes are picked at their utmost maturity, resulting in wines that are full-bodied and graceful. The Napa Ridge Cabernet becomes concentrated and rich, while skillful cellaring promotes spicy flavors and softens the tannins, delivering a silky, smooth finish. Our Chardonnay is full with tropical fruit, honey and apple flavors which lead to the savory butterscotch and vanilla notes that linger on the palate.

MAYOR BREED DEC L A RE S J ULY 1 1 GL A DY S T H AC H ER DAY Mayor London Breed helped Enterprise for Youth welcome over 300 guests to City Hall on July 11, 2019 to celebrate the 90th birthday of founder Gladys Thacher and Enterprise’s 50th anniversary of helping youth explore the future of work. To cap off the festivities, Mayor London Breed declared July 11th Gladys Thacher Day and presented a Mayoral Proclamation to honor Glady's significant contribution to our community and to the future of San Francisco youth: “For 50 years, Glady and Enterprise have done amazing work with 25,000 young people who’ve been given the tools and opportunity to succeed in life. Enterprise’s growth and success is testament to Glady’s legacy of hard work.” Many friends of Enterprise attended the joyous event and Enterprise presented Innovation Awards to Mayor Breed and Gap Inc, recognizing their commitment to providing meaningful work experiences and creating economic opportunity for the youth of San Francisco. Enterprise for Youth shares Glady's deep belief in the transformative power of exposure to opportunity at an early age. We are committed to helping prepare the next generation of San Franciscans for a better tomorrow for the next fifty years and beyond.

RONA LD F. S C H WA R Z 19 3 6 – 2 0 1 9 If memory serves me, Ron Schwarz strode onto the pier the second year of the Antiques Show and introduced himself as someone interested in antiques and in volunteering to help in some capacity if we needed him. (Of course we did!). At the time, he was part owner of a shop on Sacramento Street, specializing in porcelain. He was also a certified appraiser and an interior designer. As the relationship between Ron and the Show developed, it turned out he was also a collector in several disciplines and a connoisseur on many levels. It did not take long for Ron to become a Show insider, indeed a highly valued advisor lending his expertise, useful connections, great style and invaluable guidance—sort of the right person at the right time. The right time lasted for twenty-five years. There have been many people throughout the history of the Antiques Show who have contributed much to its success. A few, like Ron, were instrumental in assuring it became a very special event. His participation will be remembered fondly by many. Toby Rose, Co-Founder, The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show

CALIFORNIA STATEHOOD, 1850-1858 31 stars with scattered positioning, on an entirely hand-sewn American national flag made entirely of silk. The blue canton rests on a red stripe, a rare feature, sometimes referred to as the "blood stripe" or the "war stripe". Reflects the addition of California as the 31st state in 1850. This star count was official from 1851 -1858, but the flag appears to have been extensively flown. Made to be hand-carried, it was likely produced for a militia unit during the 31 star period, then carried by the same unit during the Civil War (1861-65). Flag - 48" x 67", Frame - 60" x 80"

The Art of Excellence Art & Antiques is tailored to readers who are actively involved in the international art market. Our editorial policy places special emphasis on the interests of the serious art aficionado—a collector whose passion is acquiring and living with art, antiques and highend collectibles. Our internationally recognized writers, many of whom are experts in their fields, speak with the voice of authority as they explore the significance and nuances of masterpieces that span the history of art and design—from ancient to contemporary. In our fourth decade, we will continue to provide our readers with insight into connoisseurship, sophisticated analysis of the global art business and lively, critical essays.
