HELLO!

INSIDE

Welcome to the 2014 Falmouth University Fal River Festival. Now in its ninth year, the Festival celebrates life in, on and around this special river and really showcases this amazing part of Cornwall. This year, the Fal River Festival has loads going on and you’ll have difficulty choosing what to do! You’ll find art, music, drama, sport, food, walks, history, culture and more - all linked by a love of the river. Everything you need to enjoy the Festival is in this guide, including an overview of all the events on pages 4 and 5, and then each day covered in detail. And for the first time this year, the Festival runs into a second week so we can celebrate the achievements of the Falmouth University students, to which we are all invited. The Festival offers something for people of all ages and we hope that you will explore, discover and celebrate in its magic with us. If you need any further information including maps, ferry tickets and Mussel Cards, just call into the Falmouth Visitor Information Centre on Prince of Wales Pier.

FRIDAY 23 JOIN THE BEER FLEET!

From 4pm

FAL RIVER FESTIVAL BEER FLEET Free - Live Music

Crafts of all shapes and sizes join our fleet of classic ferries as we mark the ceremonial passage of the beer from Truro to Falmouth for the start of the Fal River Festival. The celebrations start as guests board the first boat at 3.30pm from Prince of Wales Pier in Falmouth. Other boats join the fleet throughout the afternoon and everyone meets at King Harry Ferry, Trelissick to make the final journey down to Falmouth Harbour, including the A&P Group tugs, sponsors of the first day of the festival. If you have your own boat or craft, we would love for you to join the Beer Fleet and escort the beer down the Fal River it really is the more the merrier!

Join the Beer Fleet as we sail down the Fal River to launch the Falmouth University Fal River Festival 2014

At approximately 5.30, the Beer Fleet makes its grand entrance to Falmouth Harbour, which is the cue for the A&P tugs to open their water cannons, always an amazing sight.

The fleet lands at Custom House Quay at approximately 6pm. The Beer Fleet will then parade through town to Events Square, at the head of which will be the barrel of Skinner’s beer, accompanied by music from Truro School of Samba. On arrival at Events Square, the party really begins!

JAZZ DINNER £26 - Live Music

From From 7pm 4pm

Three course dinner and entertainment from the fantastic “Atlantic View Jazz Trio”. The twelve-piece Soul band are heading back to the Fal River Festival. After regular performances at major community events in Falmouth, including the Carnival and Oyster Festival, and following a rapturous response at the Looe Music Festival last September, the Falmouth Soul Sensation will be coming to the River Festival Opening night. The band plays an eclectic mix of classic and modern soul music that appeals to all ages. They are a community outfit with a range of musicians and singers; all ages from fifteen upwards. Some have previously played in well-known bands, including bandleader Bob Black who was drummer with the eighties hit band the Flying Lizards, and Dave Outan who regularly played keyboards at the Marquee Club in the 60’s. Others are new to soul bands, having previously played in classical music ensembles or learned music at local schools and colleges. For example, Star singer Elly Gow from the Lizard learned to sing at Mullion School and is now studying Performance at Truro College. Tamara Carroll is singing this year while still studying at Falmouth School and has a voice to be believed in one so young. The result is an exciting blend of sounds - expect a lively evening of non-stop dancing!

Jim Carey is a contemporary artist and musician. Although based in Falmouth, much of his time is spent painting outdoors, ‘en pleinair’, in the unique coastlines, hills and woodlands of the Cornish landscape. Carey’s work is not only representative, but also an expression of an emotional response to the ever changing light, mood and colour of the seasons. His fascination with the natural world has recently taken him further afield to the countryside of France and Spain, responding to a warmer more vivid colour and light...with more shadows, bluer skies, and brighter more intense colours reminiscent of an impressionist’s world. www.jim-carey.co.uk www.falriverfestival.co.uk

Grahame wrote the first two Wind in the Willows letters which he sent to his son Alastair, while staying at The Greenbank Hotel. During the Fal River Festival we will be giving you the opportunity to read a recreation of these letters when you join us for a lunch or Afternoon Tea any day from Friday 23rd May until Sunday 1st June. STONE CARVING OPEN STUDIO

10From am - 5pm 4pm

Since winning the Monty Don Real Craft Stonemasonry episode, Stéphane Rouget took the leap of faith and opened his own carving studio, after some encouragement from Brad Steele, the mentor on the show and Monty Don. Anna Keay, the director of The Landmark Trust - who commissioned the water feature for their flagship country house, Goddards, built by Edwin Lutyens in the 1900s - said “The enthusiasm of the three participants was clear from the start, but I really wasn’t sure about their ability and keeping up with Lutyens is no easy task. But the end -results were actually very good and I think the winner, Stéphane, could have a wonderful career ahead of him.” Come along to Stéphane’s studio and have a go at stone carving. www.stephanerouget.com /rougetstephane

These materials are carefully recycled, reformed and refined to represent the fragility and understated beauty of the Cornish coastal ecosystem. My work is intuitive and holds the emotions, memories and sense of myself that words cannot express.
