HELLO!
FAL RIVER FESTIVAL Welcome to the 2015 Falmouth University Fal River Festival. Now in its 10th year and the festival celebrates life on and around the Fal River and really showcases this amazing part of Cornwall. Once again the Fal River Festival has such a wide variety of activity that it really does cater for all ages and interests. As well as some of the established favorites such as Film on the Ferry and the Beer Fleet we also have linked up with some new partners to give you new and exciting events including the Falmouth Blues Festival at Events Square, Star Gazing at Trelissick and an amazing under water photography display at the NMMC. Everything you need to enjoy the Festival is in this guide, including a daily overview of the top events on pages 4 and 5 and a suggested daily itinerary showing how you can visit more than one event using the Fal River Links network.

FRIDAY
The sailing of the Beer Fleet is the traditional start of the Fal River Festival. Crafts of all shapes and sizes join the fleet of classic ferries to mark the ceremonial passage of the beer from Truro to Falmouth. The celebrations begin at 5.30pm when the entire Beer Fleet flotilla gathers at the King Harry Ferry and where the ‘festival ale’ from Skinner’s Brewery is loaded. The first day of the Festival is sponsored by A&P Group and its tugs from Falmouth will join the flotilla as it sails down the river. Those with their own boats or crafts, are welcome to join the Beer Fleet and escort the beer down the Fal River to Falmouth, landing at Custom House Quay - the more the merrier! Please note that the parade will move at 7-8 knots. As the Beer Fleet enters Falmouth harbour, the A&P Tugs open their water cannons for a spectacular entrance. This grand entrance will be at approximately 6pm. On berthing at Custom House Quay, make your way to Events Square where the party really gets going...
‘You are Here’ is an exhibition that brings together sitespecific artefacts designed and built to define a sense of space. Created by level two students on the BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts course, this will be the Ninth year that students have collaborated with the National Trust, returning to Trelissick for a seventh consecutive year. Car park and admission charges apply.

Historically, Cornwall has a very strong connection with Mexico through it’s shared mining heritage, dating from the early 1800s, and Perran Foundry played an important part, exporting beam engines to Real del Monte in Hidalgo, Mexico’s ‘Little Cornwall’. Kenneth Grahame stayed at the Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth in 1907. During his holiday he found inspiration on a boat trip from Fowey. Whilst passing the riverbanks, his thoughts turned to beginning the novel ‘The Wind in the Willows’. The story began as a series of letters. Grahame wrote the first two Wind in the Willows letters which he sent to his son Alastair, while staying at The Greenbank Hotel. During the Fal River Festival we will be giving you the opportunity to read a recreation of these letters when you join us for a lunch or Afternoon Tea any day from Friday 22rd May until Sunday 31st May.

Brought to you by The King Harry Ferry and Skylight Cinema, this is your chance to enjoy classic films on a truly unique stage. Come and enjoy the event with light refreshments on board from the Thirstea Company as we float the ferry out to the middle of the river for the film to begin. A couple on a holiday in the Caribbean decide to spend the day on a scuba diving trip. When a mis-count happens on the boat, Susan and Daniel are left behind in the middle of the ocean, the boat long gone and with sharks circling. Parking is available at Trelissick Garden with foot access down the road to the ferry. The ferry will depart the Philleigh side at 9.30pm and the Feock side at 9.40pm, so please be ready to board at these times. Our screenings will go ahead whatever the weather* so you will need to wrap up warm and bring your own seat! *Gale force winds are the only factor that might stop this event going ahead. STAR GAZING Kernow Astronomers is setting up a range of telescopes at Trelissick from 9.00pm on 29th May, with a public viewing starting at approximately 9.30pm. The skies will not get really dark until just after 10.00pm, so any prior viewing will be limited to the Moon and the brighter planets. Amateur star gazers can expect to see the many craters of the moon, Venus, and the real “star” of the evening... Jupiter. Jupiter will be visible all evening and in addition to the banding of clouds on the surface of the planet, observers should see all four of Jupiter’s main moons, namely Io, Europa, Ganymede and Calisto. Another magnificent sight to behold, in the eastern sky, will be Saturn with its glorious rings. Whilst low down at first it will get progressively higher as the evening progresses. But that’s not all... in addition to the Solar System objects, there are many deep sky objects to be observed, from galaxies to nebulae and star clusters to constellations. Warm clothing is advised. This event will be weather dependant. www.kernowastronomers.com will be prizes for best fancy dress period costume!

FRIDAY
29 FALMOUTH, EVENTS SQUARE From 7.30pm
Otis Reading III £11
Legendary soul singer Otis Redding left his son Otis Redding III with a musical heritage that extends far beyond the hit records for which he is famous. Indeed, Otis Redding III has been bestowed with his father’s unique musical gift, and for nearly 25 years has put this talent to good use by not only touring and performing, but also writing and arranging since the early 80’s. An accomplished and recognized artist in his own right, Otis Redding III grew even more as a musician and performer touring with his band The Reddings. He did not realize until much later in his career that it is truly his father’s talent that pulses in his veins. The music has to have feeling and emotion... says Otis. While I’m playing guitar or singing, I don’t proclaim to be a vocalist like my father. He is in good company. In his UK touring eight piece ensemble are lead guitarist Alik Peters-Deacon (Joss Stone, Beverley Knight, James Robinson), vocalist Alex Hart and blues singer Becca Langsford. The horn section features British Composer of the Year Simon Dobson on Trumpet and Dan Hillman on Saxophone. www.seetickets.com

In his spare time, her grandfather painted and would often moor up in the river and get his paints out. He passed this talent onto Angelica and taught her the rudiments of oil-painting as a child. www.angelicashelonfentem@gmail.com
