Welcome to the Falmouth Town Guide

Falmouth, Spirit of the Sea

Welcome to Falmouth’s Town Guide. “Falmouth is the jewel Discover what’s on, where to go and what to do in the historic port in Cornwall’s crown.” of Falmouth. Recently voted one of the best places in the UK to live, Falmouth is famed as much for its food and festival scene as for its spellbinding river, breathtaking beaches, cultural centre and maritime heritage. Working together to ensure that both locals and visitors experience the very best on offer, our partnerships and collective approach aim to preserve and develop the unique character of the town. Based around a thriving harbour, Falmouth is busy with all year round activity while also providing an abundance of cafés, restaurants, shops and festivals. With plenty to see and do, you’ll find museums, castles and great walking routes scattered amongst scenic surroundings boasting brilliant beaches and world-class watersports. Falmouth is also gateway to the Fal River - Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination. This beautiful Cornish river runs through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by award winning places to stay, attractions, sub-tropical gardens and great things to see and do. All this is connected by a network of ferries, buses and trains, best enjoyed with the great value Fal Mussel Card, the river’s ‘“Hop-On Hop-Off” travel pass.

Spirit of the Sea

Falmouth is bursting with beautiful beaches, top-notch attractions, historical sites and maritime heritage, all framed by stunning natural scenery and shimmering blue sea.

On the water

Just beachy

Home to the world’s third largest natural deep-water harbour, Falmouth’s maritime setting is central to its economy. With industries such as boatbuilding, fishing, marine engineering, shipping and watersports - its coastal culture is both economically vibrant and charming to visitors.

A host of beaches fringe Falmouth, offering everything from sun-kissed shores to high-octane action. From surfing to sailing and sunbathing to snorkelling, everyone can enjoy the area’s varied oceanside activities.

Legend has it... Not only do the port and docklands help secure Falmouth’s industrial success, they also represent a rich history which saw kings and famous seafarers stamp their mark on the town. From the Royal Mail packet ships to smugglers and pirates, trading and travel have defined Falmouth’s history for hundreds of years and still continue to sculpt its modern day character.

“ Foodies, lovers of the coast and countryside, shopping connoisseurs and art lovers are all spoilt here. In one town, Falmouth has it all and I love it.” Tamsin Loveless Head of Communications, National Maritime Museum Cornwall See page 19

Attractions aplenty There’s a spectacular array of things to see and do in Falmouth. Built by King Henry VIII, Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle proudly guard the estuary while the National Maritime Museum Cornwall honours Falmouth’s heritage. Combined with parks and gardens and a wealth of cafés, restaurants and bars not to mention an all-year-round events and festival schedule - Falmouth, quite simply, is the place to visit in Cornwall.

“I’ve always been fascinated by Falmouth. From childhood reading, it was one of those romantic ports where ships left to rescue nobles from revolutionary France in Scarlet Pimpernel novels. Historically it’s always been a major port. It has one of the best natural harbours in Europe. It has fabulous fish and is a pretty and atmospheric Cornish town.” Rick Stein See page 44

Partnership Falmouth Key to Falmouth’s growing success is a series of partnerships in place to ensure operations within the town are smoothly run and constantly evolving. All striving and working closely together to make Falmouth a better place for both its residents and visitors, the dynamic partnership scheme comprises a number of networks whose sole aim is to support the local economy, people and culture, helping them to continually flourish. The Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) is a not-for-profit company responsible for delivering a number of innovative projects that aim to improve the trading environment of Falmouth. It is business-led - with over 400 businesses involved, who constantly deliver initiatives such as destination marketing, new events and festivals, PR campaigns, public realm improvements and business training programmes. Established in 1866, The Port of Falmouth Chamber of Commerce comprises a group of local business people from a range of sectors whose aim is to promote the port and town for the benefit of the members and the wider community. The Falmouth Town Forum is an ideas and consultation group whose purpose is to assist the Town Council and other agencies in developing Falmouth for the benefit of its residents, students and businesses. The apolitical Forum unites representatives of a variety of groups and organisations in the town from the commercial, charitable and statutory sectors. Recent work includes the long-term development of Falmouth, the Falmouth and Penryn Community Plan, greater waterside access, traffic management, tourism development, the Business Improvement District and youth issues. Created to support and inspire Falmouth residents, businesses, visitors, the local authorities and service providers, The #LoveFalmouth online and offline campaign encourages all to take pride in the town through maximising efforts to maintain an attractive, safe, clean, smart and litter-free town and waterfront through regular and continuous good housekeeping. Seagull-proof bins, regularised rubbish collections, information campaigns and efforts such as the Spring clean within the Spring Festival involving many volunteers helps to improve the town. The Town Council provides hanging baskets through the main streets and power washing on a weekly basis, as well as partnerships working with Falmouth BID for the bunting displays. For 2014 the Town Council has also taken on all public toilets within Falmouth and they are now all free to use. Formed in 1974, Falmouth’s Quality Town Council currently comprises sixteen elected councillors to help undertake a variety of local services from planning and highways to shopmobility, parks and gardens, Community Grant Awards and Christmas lighting. Involved in a mass of projects, their work is an integral part of the core alliance of Falmouth’s partnerships that continue to drive the town forward and afford it a well-esteemed and popular place on the map. Fal River Cornwall is a destination marketing partnership with over 100 members. It promotes the Fal River as Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination with Falmouth and its ferry hub at the heart of the area.

Spirit of the Sea Falmouth is synonymous with the sea. A centre of enterprise and communication, its historical roots are bound to its magnificent harbour and maritime culture. More than a mere fishing port, Falmouth boasts the third largest natural deepwater harbour in the world. It is flanked by Pendennis & St Mawes Castles, King Henry VIII’ s impenetrable forts built to protect the harbour from French and Spanish fleets. With a history of traders from Greece, Rome and Gaul visiting over 2,000 years ago, Falmouth has continued to capitalise on its trading town status throughout every historical age. Charles II’s royal charter in 1661 further opened the waterside gates, while in 1688 - with Sir Walter Raleigh’s vision combined with the sponsorship of the Killigrew family - Falmouth’s port was born. It became the Royal Mail’s Packet Station where Custom House Quay dispatched dozens of packet ships, rapidly expanding its destinations to include the West Indies and North and South America

9

www.falmouth.co.uk

which, in turn, surpassed London’s shipping activity in tonnage terms. Diversifying its workforce and expertise across all sectors - from boat building to fishing - the inception of the Falmouth Docks and railway exponentially increased the town’s burgeoning prosperity and reputation. With transport came tourism, as visitors began to admire the area’s distinct and diverse offerings and spectacular scenery. Today, modern developments see Falmouth as a university town with a vibrant student population, a commercial port and industrial entity, popular holiday destination and internationally renowned cultural and artistic centre. A place of poise, Falmouth’s relationship with the ocean and its people continues to strike a careful balance between industrial innovation and the surrounding natural environment. With an ever-growing visitor economy resulting in a wealth of attractions, gardens and innovative transport solutions

such as Fal River Links and the Fal Mussel Card, this Cornish harbour town continues to adapt to the needs and challenges of its people, both on a local and global scale, whilst capturing the imagination of everyone who visits. U F S CA AL E Y TH RD MU OUR E O SSE FE N RR AL L IE L S

This August over 40 vessels from around the world, including more than 10 of the magnificent and mighty square-rigged Tall Ships, will arrive in Falmouth for four days of festivities and celebrations.

“You don’t need to be a seasoned sailor to feel moved by the sight of these incredible ships and from both an historic and geographical point of view - Falmouth sets them off to perfection.”

They will be readying themselves for the prestigious Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta, heralding the largest international sailing event in the South West in 2014.

John Hick, Chair of the Tall Ships Regatta

A full programme of shore-side entertainment will be hosted throughout Falmouth with live music, street entertainment, displays, exhibitions, markets, children’s activities, ship’s crew parade through the town centre and a spectacular fireworks display.

Glengurdan Garden Explore the peaceful valley garden leading down to Durgan village with its sheltered beach on the Helford river. Watch passing fishing boats and gentle waves before walking back past exotic plants in the garden with a crab sandwich or cream tea to finish off. In spring you can walk past wildflowers on sunny slopes and shaded patches. On a summer’s day the ponds reflect the leaves of giant rhubarb and lovely old tree-ferns. By autumn the tree collection has changed colour into reds, oranges and yellows; the sent of the candy-floss trees fill parts of the valley and the bright red fruits on the dogwood trees swell and ripen. Take time to enjoy the views around the garden – across the valley to our famous maze, down the valley to the blue of the Helford river or from Durgan beach to the soft shores of the surrounding coast. “Wonderful walk, plants and views. Very tranquil.”

Things to do checklist Lose yourself in the three valleys of Glendurgan Garden - full of fun, natural beauty and amazing plants. Discover giant rhubarb plants in the jungle-like lower valley and spiky arid plants basking in the sunny upper slopes. Wander through the garden down to the beautiful hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River: a place to watch birds and boats, skim stones and build sand-castles. Pick up a Cornish souvenir from our shop.

“We used the Fal Mussel Card whilst on an October half-term holiday in St Mawes. It was our first visit to the area and we will certainly return, partly due to the availability of the Mussel Card. We only used the car once during our 9 day stay, and even then used the Fal Mussel Card for the King Harry Ferry for an evening trip to Truro to see the latest Bond film at the cinema.”

The purpose of this guide is to provide a central source of information about Falmouth for residents and visitors alike, so that everyone can take advantage of all that our historic and dynamic town has to offer. This is an exciting time for our town. In August 2014 we welcome the return of the Tall Ships Regatta which promises to be a wonderful event and certainly a highlight on the calendar. It feeds into our ever increasing annual events list which includes the Fal River Festival, Pendennis Cup (every two years), Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, Falmouth Week, Splash, Oyster Festival and many many more. Our parks and gardens are always nominated in the Awards for Britain in Bloom and the four main beaches are some of the cleanest in the county. Falmouth is a very diverse town and has so much to offer from the castle to museums, galleries, universities, boat trips, rockpooling, walks and that is just the start whether you live locally or are visiting on holiday. Such things as the possible future dredge of the channel will enable cruise ships of a larger tonnage to visit the Town and it will also secure the future of the Docks.
