Contents Welcome to our Toddlers & Travel issue

It’s our Toddlers and Travel Issue, so I’ve gone the extra mile for you guys and pulled the kids out of school and childcare and taken the entire family (five of us) to Bali so I can speak with certainty of expectations vs reality. We got a super cheap deal to stay in a 4-star hotel for a week for $600 with what we thought was an internet scam but turned out to be a Ponzi scheme. All we had to do was attend a one-hour ‘information session’ about their resorts and travel deals and then just ‘extend our mortgage’ to buy into the offer - bargain!

Ready, Set... Kindy! Starting Kindy is a big milestone in your child’s life, but there are lots of little things you can do to help them prepare for this exciting new experience. Set the scene

What do you remember about Kindy and Pre-school? Sharing your experiences can help your child get excited about Kindy and reduce any fears they might have about being separated from you. Drop the idea of Kindy into conversations with your child whenever occasion arises, and even do occasional drive-pasts so that it becomes familiar to them and won’t seem so daunting. Let your child know that Kindy is a great experience and that you will be there at the end of every day to greet them and hear all about it.

Get your child involved

Your child will appreciate feeling they have some involvement in the preparation for Kindy, so provide your child plenty of opportunity to ask questions and talk about it. Take them with you to choose their Kindy bag, water bottle and anything else they will need for day one, and let them help with naming their items if they want to – it’s all good cooperation practice! Be sure to choose items that your child will be able to clearly identify as theirs, and a water bottle that they can easily open and close without help. If you can, arrange a time for your child to visit the Kindy in advance so they can get an idea of what to expect. Knowing where to find the toilets, seeing other children engaged in fun activities, and meeting their Kindy teachers will all help to make starting Kindy a lot less overwhelming!

Build independence

Children don’t need to be able to do everything by themselves, but helping them become more independent with smaller everyday tasks can help to reduce their anxiety about being in a new environment. If your child can put on their own shoes, manage going to the toilet, blow their nose, wash their hands, and pack their own bag their confidence will shine.

Practice

Can you open your lunchbox by yourself? Do you want to practice packing your bag? Are you confident about using the toilet by yourself? Can you put your shoes on without my help?

Inviting your child to practice these skills at home will build their confidence and sense of achievement, helping them feel ready for Kindy. This is the time for parents to step back a little from the urge to do everything for their child.

Encourage cooperation

For some children Kindy is their first experience of being in a structured group environment. Planning activity ideas, participating in packing away, playing cooperatively, negotiating and working together are all important skills that your child will develop at kindergarten, and you can prepare your child by encouraging cooperation at home. Give your child little responsibilities like packing up their toys and putting clothes away, invite them to help you with tasks like setting the table or preparing lunch, and organise play dates and visits to play groups so that your child can practice their social skills. Play board games with your child to help them learn about taking turns, how to win and lose graciously, and develop numeracy skills. TIP: Local libraries are a great place to find structured craft sessions and workshops where your child can practice participating in a timed activity, as well as providing opportunities to develop literary knowledge.

Get into a routine

A day at Kindy is full of routine and you can help your child prepare for this by practicing a similar routine at home. Encourage your child to have breakfast, be dressed, and ready to leave the house in good time, and contact your child’s kindergarten in advance to ask what their daily schedule looks like so that your child can gradually adjust to it. If your child knows when to expect fruit and lunch breaks, quiet time, story time and active play they will feel more settled, and you can confidently look forward to seeing your child flourish. Do kids still need Fairytales?

The stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and The Snow Queen are all told in different ways; by different publishers, illustrators and theatre companies, but their essence remains the same. The same stories are told in Asian, Middle Eastern and African cultures in myriad forms. This is both the reason we love fairytales, and the reason we need them. They create a link from our personal histories to our future and they represent a constant moral compass which either replaces or reinforces a religious belief.

Fairytales and Stereotypes There is a view – not an unreasonable one – that fairytales reinforce the very stereotypes our generation is working hard to dismantle. Certainly, there are more than a few princesses to be found in fairytales, and female characters are either portrayed as pure and innocent of heart (the virtuous woman) or as evil witches (stepmothers and power-hungry temptresses alike). Male characters have very little emotional substance and tend to spend fairytales being brave and slightly daft. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a character with a disability or any minority representation. Because we’re so good at guilt, this very justifiable view might encourage you to collect up all those old books and toss them away.

Before you Bin the Stories… But before you do, consider why our children love these stories; why they boo and hiss the baddies on stage and fall in love with Cinderella year after year. Why are they happy to listen to these stories again and again

4

Your Local Families Magazine - Brisbane October/November 2018

and why do we, as adults, still remember exactly the feel of the pages of the Hansel and Gretel book we had as children? Because our children don’t see the stereotypes; gender, colour, disabilities, religions. They see only good and bad, right and wrong. Fairytales are very clear indeed about good and bad, right and wrong. Being kind to your friends is good, making your stepdaughter work harder than your kids is bad. Looking after your grandmother is right, luring children to their death in a house made of candy is definitely wrong. These clear messages may be exactly what our children need in a word full of social complexity. As adults we have a choice to read more into fairytales. But there’s a reason they’ve stood the test of time, and that is because they are deeply understood and appreciated by the very little people for whom they were written in the first place. Julie Englefield is General Manager of Brisbane Arts Theatre. She has two boys and makes up fairytales to explain why they’re not allowed to climb to the top shelf of the pantry when they’re hungry.

How to Support Girls to Choose Creative STEM Careers!

The fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, otherwise known as STEM, continue to capture headlines in the media due to the importance these subjects hold for the future of our young people. As early as ten years ago jobs such as “Social Media Manager” and “Mobile App Developer” simply did not exist, and this trend of new jobs is showing no signs of changing any time soon.

How Can Teachers and Parents Help with STEM?

Promoting STEM at Home

So why are young people today, and particularly girls, choosing not to take STEM further? And as a teacher or parent, how can we contribute towards changing this?

We must all take on the responsibility of building both confidence and interest in STEM. At home, parents can encourage and promote natural curiosity about the world. This stimulates engaging discussions and questions providing an opportunity to show your daughter/s that they do not have to have immediate answers to everything. If they explore and make mistakes, they can make discoveries for themselves. It is important to allow our girls to get messy around the house or in the garden, allowing experimenting and experiences that are not always successful the first time they are tried. Practice predicting, measuring, observing and analysing. Encourage talk about Mathematics and Science, promote it, and engage in documentaries and films. Talk about what they have learnt in STEM related classes, share their enthusiasm, celebrate their successes, encourage any failures, arouse their curiosity and get excited! But most of all, let them see these subjects are fun!

One of the biggest obstacles STEM subjects face is the belief that these subjects are “difficult”, “challenging”, or “boring”. As teachers of STEM subjects, we believe the key to fostering more interest is emphasising to our students that these subjects are about fun and creativity, and particularly, creativity in conjunction with problem solving, to benefit people and society. We must move away from the direct and indirect messages we tell our young people that these subjects are “hard” and “geeky”.

Resilience & Role Modelling is Key One of the most detrimental conversations we can have with our children is that “we found it difficult and boring too!” This reinforces their belief that it is acceptable to give up. Instead, the message should highlight that working hard to understand new concepts and overcome challenges is a part of life, and that perhaps they are simply not able to do it “yet”.

Written by K Gibbs, C Lamb, L Mohan – Clayfield College. To find our more visit www.clayfield.qld.edu.au

Teaching our young people to be resilient learners, and not giving up at the first sign of difficulty, should be the priority message, and is key to changing this mindset. For girls, this message can make all the difference. A key motivator can be successful female professionals in areas of STEM. Access to these motivating, and often inspiring, role models broadens knowledge and ignites interest. Parents can often also be these inspirational adults in their children’s lives.

Choosing STEM at School Giving students the opportunity to engage in co- curricular STEM activities such as the STEM2PLATE Club, Double- Helix Science Club, Titration Club, Maths Club, Chess Club and Build to Fly Drone Club is crucial. Frequent opportunities are provided to interact with past students undertaking study in STEM related courses at university, visit universities, participate in STEM workshops, and engage in external competitions. By engaging with STEM concepts outside of the classroom, the aim is to highlight the importance of these subjects and their significant contribution to the advancement of society. The new Australian Digital Technologies Curriculum has made the teaching of digital technologies (including programming concepts and computational thinking) a “core” subject alongside Mathematics, English and Science at Primary School. Young children are learning how to programme with BeeBots, Lego Wedo, Sphero, Little Bits and Ozobots (robotics and coding). Introducing young people to STEM through creative play in Primary School is the key to fostering curiosity and interest. Showing children that learning how to programme, and studying Maths and Science can be “fun”, will set them up well for the further study of STEM in Secondary School. All of these afore mentioned activities, provide our young people with different ways and means to interact with STEM on a continual and ongoing basis – in and out of the classroom. This is incredibly important, as many young people lead very busy lives filled with sport, music and other interests that can dominate their time after school and on the weekend. The Easy Way to Get Back to Nature and Off the Beaten Track!

A real camping and fishing holiday adventure is the stuff that childhood school holiday dreams are made of. It’s the kind of rite of passage that many of us experienced when we were young, but that today’s children sadly often miss out on.

The Importance of Going Bush It’s the simple life. It’s the ability to turn off the clocks, timers, phones and devices and follow wherever the road may lead. It’s putting up tents and having them collapse down again, covering your children in giggles as well as material. It’s traipsing down bush tracks, fishing rods in hand, to find the perfect spot poised above a babbling brook. It’s everyone freezing to get a look at approaching wildlife – holding their breath as a wallaby inches closer and closer, only to dart away when someone steps on a twig. It’s cold mornings spent zipping yourself back into the sleeping bag, trying to catch a little more shut eye before the sun sneaks into the tent. It’s snuggling together in front of a camp fire, marshmallows on sticks at the ready, and scaring yourselves silly with the tallest of tales. It’s being together and finding yourself again after losing each other in the busyness of every day city life.

4WD Camping in Queensland Taking a vehicle and heading bush opens up a world of camping and fishing possibilities. It affords you the luxury of choice. You can camp on the beach, in national parks and on Stradbroke island. You can explore the beauty and wonder of South East Queensland by following tracks that you would not have been able to take in your usual mode of transport. You’re off road and the adventurous spirit infects your children so much that they stop asking for the iPad and start asking where to next. The ability to navigate terrain in a 4WD adds excitement to your camping adventure. Having real control over a capable vehicle will show you a different, wilder side of South East Queensland’s camping hotspots than you’ve ever seen before. This is Aussie holidaying at it’s very best and it’s the kind of experience that will be looked back on with great fondness for years to come. They say that kids will never look back and remember their best day of watching television. Chances are, however, that when they look back on their childhood that this will be the kind of trip they’ll remember forever.

A Connection with Nature Forging a connection with, and an appreciation of, nature is of the upmost importance for our children. It allows children to take the opportunity to be peaceful, to be grateful, and to reflect. In a time when sustainability and environmentalism are popular issues like never before, allowing children to have immersive natural experiences like proper 4WD camping means that they can put this learning into context. They can see the beautiful forests, beaches, coves and fields that we are working so hard to protect. They can camp on the beach and listen to the waves crashing against the rocks as they drift off to sleep. They can be awakened by the chorus of one thousand native birds and they can gaze with wonder at the millions of stars they would never be able to see in their garden in the city.

Which Fiji resort is best for families? Our writer says she’s found the ultimate flop and drop paradise at Malolo Island Resort. Here are her tips for helping you to choose a child-friendly stay in Fiji. Done right, Fiji time is a great time for families. The pace is famously relaxed and the vibe luxuriously laid-back. With around 330 tropical islands to explore and many boasting world-class resorts, the task of choosing the right location to holiday with kids can be overwhelming. Familyfriendly properties like Malolo Island Resort make this look effortless but how do you know that you’ve picked a winner before you get there? Here are a few things to look for before you book.

1. THE DRESS CODE IS STRICTLY FLIP FLOPS AND SMART CASUAL Parents have so much to think about when preparing for a holiday. Any trip where you can relax in your casual gear keeps the process simple. Pack only the basics and fast-track your way to that holiday feeling. Better yet, when you get there, there’s no pressure to dress up for meal times or just hanging around the resort because everyone’s dressed the same and knows the drill.

Further, it offers adult-only retreats including day spa and pool.

3. THERE’S A GUILT-FREE KIDS CLUB Not all kids’ clubs are made equal, but if you can find one that taps into the local culture, then you’re onto a winner. Tia’s Tree House at Malolo Island Resort offers an educational and cultural experience for kids - you won’t find any games consoles here. The TV is only switched on late in the evenings and plays programs about marine and wildlife conservation. Sorry Disney! The staff go out of their way to make sure that every day is full of new learnings and fun - and you’ll get a scrapbook at the end of your stay to prove it.

5. THE PRICE IS ON POINT Most important to any holiday is making sure that you can afford it. There’s nothing worse than arriving at a fantastic destination only to realise that the Kids Club is too expensive or that there isn’t enough in the budget for holiday treats. If you like to know where you stand before you leave, book a resort that offers meal packages, includes the kids club and gives you free use of

Malolo kids can go on guided snorkelling adventures to sight incredible sea life, participate in a wildlife show by getting up close with the endangered Fijian Crested Iguana (only found on this island) and even spend a morning visiting the local school. Children aged four to twelve can go to Malolo’s Kids Club with additional staff available to look after younger children for an hourly rate. This club is pretty special - staff will even pick your children up from dinner so that you can enjoy that second course and a little-uninterrupted conversation.

2. THE RESORT IS PERSONALISED AND PRIVATE There are plenty of resorts that offer a cookie cutter service which can be great but if you want something a bit more special seek out a property that provides some exclusivity. A trip to Malolo is a short sea-plane, ferry or helicopter flight from Nadi International Airport and when you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with beachfront bliss, ocean views and famous Fijian hospitality. The resort comprises of 46 beautiful white weatherboard bures (Hamptons inspired), with some sleeping up to seven people. While Malolo is geared perfectly for families - it never feels over-run with kids because the resort is thoughtful spaced-out.

lunch. Families may also enjoy catching the ferry back to Denarau Port so that they can explore other parts of Fiji. Tip: Look up Rosie Holidays before you get there - they make travel and transfers in Fiji very easy.

beach and resort equipment. Do your research to ensure that what you pay for will be of good quality. Brisbane families familiar with the high standards at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) may be impressed to know that the Executive Chef Ryan Ward from this awarded restaurant now calls Malolo Island home. Chef Ryan is at the helm of the resorts three restaurants, one of which is adults only - can you say date night and exceptional food experiences.

GETTING THERE: 4. OPTIONS TO VISIT OTHER ISLANDS AND EXPERIENCE A WIDER CULTURE Relaxing by the beach is great, but sometimes you want to see and do more. For an additional fee, the local staff can take your family on island tours. Kids will love experiences like running wild on Castaway Island - the set of the famed movie or being the only inhabitants at a delicious picnic

Fijian paradise is a 3.5-hour flight from Brisbane followed by a short sea-plane, helicopter or ferry ride to Malolo Island Resort. Getting there is part of the adventure. Once you arrive, don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the magic of Malolo and choose to keep coming back year after year. Our writer, Paula Geinitz of Jetsetting Kids, was a media guest at Malolo Island Resort. Opinions are her own, not solicited and correct at the time of publication.
