Welcome to our Summer Days Out & Clubs & Classes issue 6-9

The antipodean equivalent of the Game of Thrones Stark motto is upon us: ‘Summer is coming’. It’s time to get active and find some clubs and classes to outsource my parenting/ childcare/patience. For us, this means using complex algorithms to vector enthusiasm, budget, willingness to participate and reluctance to follow instructions. I used to spread my parenting portfolio across the year with all three children, balancing their interests against a weekly timetable of activities and making sure they all had a class to attend. This resulted in a 30% increase in evening wine consumption.

Summer Days Out Mini-golf Courses in Brisbane

My new tactic this year is to invest heavily in my most promising child and let the other two ‘free play’. I also moved all the iPads to the top of the fridge. Club memberships are the new gym membership for me, where I sign up to a family deal hoping that all of them will be committed to the same activity only to discover none of them shows promise after the first term.

Get Wet Guide Books for Summer Reading for Kids

I think in the new year I will find families who look like us and see if I can palm a child to them to include in their family membership and timetabling; I call this ‘Cuckoo Care’. I’m training my children to identify friendships based on proximity and mutual interest in activities and then we get their hair cut to match the new family. It’s foolproof. If you are interested in billeting/ raising one of my children, please message. Group discounts available. Otherwise, scroll through our comprehensive list of clubs and classes to select the activity your child shows the most talent for and then do a reconnaissance drive to make sure there is a great cafe nearby.

5 CHRISTMAS EVE BOX IDEAS There is a growing tradition of giving the kids a Christmas Eve Box on the 24 December to get them right into the spirit of Christmas. Some families use this additional gift as a way to get the kids to go to bed without a fuss on Christmas Eve as generally the box will contain brand new Christmas pyjamas. Some families just love the opportunity of sharing a little bit more of the Christmas spirit just before the big day. Whatever your reason for creating a Christmas Eve box, we’ve put together a few ideas for your kids (and a special one for the mummas too!) www.familiesmagazine.com.au/christmas-eve-box-ideas

Education

H OW TO APPLY FOR A S CH OOL S CH OL A R S H I P One of our teacher insiders has helped us craft together a plan. Here’s how to apply for private school scholarships – and get them! Each school will have their individual criteria for scholarship applications. These generally involve sitting for the ACER or Edutest, an interview and other documentation that you can supply to support your application.

WHAT IS THE ACER TEST? This is a test specifically designed for scholarship entry to either a primary or a secondary school. Your private school will most likely require your child to sit one of these tests as part of their application. You need to register and pay for the test as it is centrally controlled by a body outside of the school. There is, fortunately, plenty of supporting test material that can help your child prepare. The ACER test can be found at www.acer.org. Make sure you check your school’s application criteria prior to starting the application process.

WHAT IS THE EDUTEST? The EduTest is of a similar premise to the ACER. It’s just a case of selecting the test that the school you have in mind generally uses. With both the ACER and the EduTest you need to ensure that your application is for the correct school. We can’t advise this enough – check carefully!

WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO GETTING A PRIVATE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP? 1. RESEARCH Don’t just look at what’s required for the application. The smart money is looking beyond that. What is the educational philosophy

6

Your Local Families Magazine December 2018 / January 2019

of the school? What are their morals and values? What’s their mission statement? See the kind of language they use to talk about their students and try to mirror that in the way you speak to them. Any verbal or written communication should be formal, respectful and should adhere to their ethos.

Education 2. TAKE A TOUR Get on the ground and see this school in action. Can you see your child there? Will they be happy? Does it match their interests? If possible talk to other families and students who already attend the school. Check out their social media presence. Don’t rely on information from people who were involved in the school years ago – things change. 3. COLLECTION OF EVIDENCE The ACER or EduTest is but one part of the picture. The school will also be interested in seeing the additional information you include with your application.

Extra or additional information can include:

• Evidence of any extra or co curricular involvement

• Evidence of any volunteer or community work

• Evidence of achievements at a primary school, local, state or national level

• Evidence of talents and skill (music, sport, art, cultural)

Package your evidence together as professionally as you can (either digital or hard copy) and make sure the school sees it. 4. PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW It’s not a job interview! The school will genuinely want to meet your child. Resist the temptation to practice and drill interview answers so your child sounds like a robot. Keep them natural, encourage them to show their unique and special individuality and take the pressure off. They won’t be judged if they feel shy! 5. DISCUSSING OUTCOMES As with anything in life, it’s important to be prepared and to encourage resilience. Your child might be successful, but they also might not be. It will not be the end of the world if they miss out – it will just mean that there is another path for them instead. Best of luck with your private school scholarships applications in Brisbane or anywhere in South-East Queensland. We hope your child finds the perfect fit!

Stay and Play: Retrospective on giving a second year of Kindy

Dr Rachel Kingsbury presents her honest retrospective on the pros and cons of giving a second year of play.

At the forefront of ‘big decisions’ currently consuming parents’ thinking is the hot topic of school commencement. The lack of a national consensus on start age means QLD parents are enrolling their Preppies anywhere within the compulsory parameters of 4.6 to 6.6 years. In terms of a child’s brain development the cognitive variance between those ages is enormous, so some 18-months ago I started the long think on when would be best time for my son to start Prep. I endlessly researched the short - and potential long-term consequence of starting Prep at four-something versus five-something, then did what I always knew I would do; I gave my son a second year of play.

Cons: YOU’LL WOBBLE

THE GIFT OF TIME

It’s rare to make a significant decision without wondering if you’ve got it wrong. Currently 1 in 6 Australian children are being giving a second year of play and it took courage to make a decision that went against the norm. In the first weeks, as my son’s peers moved ahead with school, I worried about whether I had irreversibly wrecked my child. I took a deep breath and focused on the long think that led to this choice. It passed.

It feels like the biggest gift I’ve given my son and myself. He gets to enjoy an extra year of play and I get to enjoy an extra year of him. Thirteen years of education is a long time, and it’s even longer if you’re a child that finds the social or academic demands of school tricky. Why rush?

YOUR CHILD MAY USE IMMATURE SPEECH FOR THE YEAR I had read ahead on this phenomenon, so I knew it would be transitory, but children who stay and play are more likely to access immature speech patterns than their Prep-enrolled, age matched peers. Gentle prompts – “use your big boy voice, buddy” – help to shift it, but this speech pattern resolves readily with school commencement.

YOU MIGHT BE CRITICISED I’ve been criticised for giving my child an unfair academic advantage. Honestly, I don’t think that I have. A child’s intelligence is largely predetermined by genetics, and from a school perspective natural intelligence tends to emerge around Grade 3. You can optimise your children, but you can’t significantly change who they will be.

YOU MAY SPEND THE YEAR DEFENDING YOUR DECISION The narrative around a second year of play continues to be a negative one, with phrases like “delayed entry,” “repeating,” “holding back,” or “well if you think he needed it.” My son doesn’t have any identified learning needs. He was recommended by Kindy to go ahead and accepted by Prep well before I made the decision to stay and play. It made the decision more difficult, explaining to others that I valued time with my child and loved the idea of giving him an extended childhood. If only to save other parents time, I can tell you that after reading every blog, attending numerous seminars, speaking with school-based colleagues etc., I identified no long-term negatives associated with giving children a second year of play. None. By midpoint of the year I was entirely happy with my decision. Having researched thoroughly I saw only long-term positives associated with giving a second year of play. Here’s a list of my pros, but others may experience different positives for their child.

8

Pros:

Your Local Families Magazine December 2018 / January 2019

12 MONTHS OF EXTRA MATURITY School children develop social and emotional skills well beyond their primary years. In the classroom children need to respond to greater level of instruction, compliance, group-work, sharing, transitions, sitting still and having enough attention to learn. They will also be exposed to success and failure. These are mature concepts, and while age-appropriate immaturity is expected in the younger years, having a maturity advantage from late school commencement has been linked to better learning and behaviour outcomes.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF ‘UNSCHOOLING’ The general idea of unschooling is learning led by a child’s natural curiosity. “What we want to see is the child in pursuit of knowledge, not knowledge in pursuit of the child,” George Bernard Shaw. I have genuinely delighted in watching my son’s natural learning for reading, writing, the

Education

WHAT’S BOREDOM? I don’t really think ‘boredom’ as a chronic state exists in preschool children, yet it is a concern parents regularly voice in giving an extra year of play. From age 3- to 11-years the human brain goes into overdrive, developing at a rate approximately twice that seen in adolescence. In parent speak, this is the ‘why? phase’. If you think your child might be intellectually bored, spend an extra year on social development and play. I’ve had zero instances of my son saying; “I’m bored of all this play and incidental learning.”

THE POWER OF REST

environment, movement, etc., that has emerged all by itself without the strictures of classroom or pressures of homework. If only for a year, it’s a lovely thing to see your child learn through curiosity, inquisitiveness, and joy.

MORE GOOD STUFF Once in school, activities outside of school are referred to as extra curricular. As a guidance counsellor, when students in younger years show difficulty coping with the school day (either socially or academically) and behaviours develop out of fatigue, my first line of advice is to parents is to drop extra curricular activities. Giving an additional year of play creates time to focus on the good stuff, like swimming, horse riding, home days, museum visits, farm stays, camping, play dates, cheaper off-peak holidays, and unstructured, outside play that doesn’t compete with the need to learn. For this year only, these things aren’t extra curricular activities, they are the activities.

Tiredness was a large part of this year. At times we returned to day sleeps, or bedtime was bought forward. At school, particularly in our Prep group, I think tiredness is at the heart of many behavioural and learning issues and I regularly recommend rest days. Most Australian families can’t afford to have a parent at home, the upshot being our small people are in afterhours care with dinner-homework-bath-bed routines crammed into small stressed windows of time. I will be interested to see if investing in a year that allowed greater rest pays dividends in coping with change, learning and behaviour regulation next year in Prep.

THRIVE VERSUS COPE I’ve always known my son could have gone to school this year. He’s gregarious with a natural curiosity for learning. He’d have coped, but a second year of play has given my child the best opportunity to thrive (versus cope) and my value for my children is that they are happy and enjoy their education.

Places to Play Mini Golf in Brisbane Have you ever played mini golf? Mini golf is a family-friendly game in which players navigate a number of twists, turns and obstacles along a miniaturised golf course. The aim of the game is to ‘putt’ your ball through the course and into each hole in the lowest number of attempts – hence the game’s other name: Putt Putt! You don’t need any skill to play – in fact, the less skill you have the more fun it can be – and all equipment is provided at the venue. These are some of our favourite places to play Mini Golf in Brisbane, so if you’ve ever fancied swinging your putt on the green give these a try!

Putt, Play and Pancakes! It’s no secret we love Victoria Park Golf Complex. Situated in the hills of Herston with views over the Brisbane city skyline, Victoria Park is a place you can easily putter away a few hours. The Victoria Park Putt Putt course is 18 holes of immaculately landscaped mini golf challenges, but the fun doesn’t end there for little ones. There’s also a fantastic adventure playground to keep the kids entertained while the grown-ups enjoy the many culinary dining experiences on offer. Our hot tip is to head there on Saturday and Sunday mornings when the market carts are out – the hot Dutch pancakes are divine! Victoria Park putt putt course is open from 6am until late at night, seven days a week. Prices start at $14 for children but they have lots of special offers and package prices on their website.

Victoria Park Golf Complex 309 Herston Road, Herston www.victoriapark.com.au

Golf Central BNE Grab your passport and get set to travel the world in 18 holes! Visit the countries that visit Queensland as you navigate this undulating mini golf course right next to Brisbane airport. Afterwards you can browse the stores at DFO or kick back and do a bit of plane spotting. Golf Central is open from 7am until late, seven days a week. Prices start at $12 for children, with discounted family packages and deals available.

Glow-in-the-Dark Mini Golf Your kids will love this Wild West themed glow-in-the-dark mini golf course, and it’s the perfect venue for rainy day round of indoor fun. Caboolture Mini Golf is 9 holes played on a glow-in-the-dark course amidst a vibrant neon light show and a pop music party atmosphere. The course is just like the old carnival style courses with colourful characters and quirky scenery – it’s sure to be a hit! The same venue also hosts glow-in-the-dark bowling and laser tag, making it an ideal place to host a kids’ birthday “par-tee”! Mini Golf at Caboolture is $5 per round, with discounts for members and multiple bookings. Open 9am until, late seven days a week.

Caboolture Bowl and Mini Golf 207 Morayfield Road, Morayfield www.caboolturebowl.com

Not Mini Golf – SUPA Golf! Supa Golf is a game for big heads: big golf club heads that is! Everything in Supa Golf has been super-size to make the game easier for the whole family to enjoy. The balls are 2-3 times bigger than a regular golf ball but soft, neon bright, and lightweight. The golf clubs all have larger heads too, taking the frustration out of the game for younger children who are still developing their coordination. The game is played over 9 holes (taking around an hour) set on a gently undulating course behind the beautiful Sirromet winery at Mount Cotton. Be sure to look out for the local wildlife – the wallabies at Sirromet love watching the Supa Golf entertainment. Supa Golf a fun and relaxing way to get everyone outdoors in the fresh air. Supa Golf is open 10am-4pm, seven days a week. Prices start at $15 for children, with family passes and annual passes available.

Supa Golf Mount Cotton Sirromet Winery, 850 Mount Cotton Road, Mount Cotton www.supagolfqld.com.au

Putt-Putt with your Foot-Foot? Crazy golf doesn’t get much crazier than this! Leave the putter at home because this game of mini golf has been upsized! Footgolf is played on a large green following rules similar to regular golf, but instead of a golf ball the game is played with a size 5 soccer ball. Players must kick the ball along the course, avoiding bunkers and sand traps along the way, to sink their ball in each hole in the least number of kicks. You can even play at night too as the course is floodlit! Mt Gravatt Mini Golf is the first place in Brisbane to offer a purpose built footgolf course, so if your soccer-mad kids are looking for a new way to test their skills this could be their new favourite challenge. Mt Gravatt Mini Golf also offers two miniature golf courses, including one under cover, and the option to host your party or event there for all ages. Find out more on their website. Mini Golf at Mt Gravatt starts at $5 per child, while Footgolf starts at $8 per child. Family passes are available. The courses are open from 9am daily, seven days a week.

Why play Mini Golf?

Mt Gravatt Mini Golf & Mt Gravatt Footgolf Mt Gravatt Showgrounds 41 Broadwater Road, Mt Gravatt www.mtgravattminigolf.com.au

Aside from being heaps of fun and enjoyable for the whole family, mini golf improves coordination, spatial awareness, and concentration. It’s also a sneaky way of teaching kids about angles, gravity, curves and refraction (but we won’t tell if you won’t!).

Bearly There

Bearly There is a delightfully told story about a much loved teddy bear called Bearly There and his very attached owner, Blake. Bearly There is Blake’s constant companion and is beginning to show signs of wear and tear. Blake’s proud Aunt Phelicia makes the decision for Blake that he needs another bear so she gives him a brand new one called Winston. However, Winston is very possessive of Blake and treats Bearly There with disdain. Fortunately, there is a day of reckoning and Blake is not so easily swayed to abandon Bearly There. Winston gets caught out with his skulduggery towards Barely There and it is a tribute to Bearly There’s virtuous qualities that he is able to forgive Winston and be inclusive towards him. Bearly There is an ideal story for early childhood readers and lends itself to a discussion around a variety of themes including loyalty, kindness and forgiveness. How to Bee

Bren MacDibble

Set in a future that is unfortunately easily believable, bees are extinct and farms use children to pollinate the crops to ensure enough food. Peony lives on a farm with her grandfather and sister. Her life is hard but happy as Peony works as a pest, and longs to become a prestigious bee. Peony’s mother lives and works in the city, but one day arrives at the farm determined to remove Peony from everything and everyone she loves. This dystopian novel for 10-12-year-old’s is an excellent, intense read. Through Peony’s fierce determination to return home, the themes of family, friendship and kindness are explored. However, the novel doesn’t shy away from the more confrontational themes of greed, abuse and consequence either. This book presents children with meaningful life experiences that may challenge and extend their thoughts and emotions around what is important to them in their own lives. Donna Vine | Teacher Librarian Moreton Bay College

Our Librarian Won’t Tell Us Anything Toni Buzzeo As a teacher librarian I am used to being asked hundreds of questions every day and guiding students to have the skills to find the information they seek. It is the best part of my day when students can successfully answer the questions buzzing around in their brains. This is why I love Our Librarian Won’t Tell Us Anything. I use this book every year when introducing skills and pitfalls of research and information literacy. It is a fun, rollicking story that values libraries and teacher librarians and the contribution they make to the ongoing education of the children in our care. As the students work in the library together, they also learn the valuable lesson that collaboration and communication make learning more enjoyable and successful. I am confident that librarians, teachers, students and parents would enjoy reading this book. Marilyn Fry | Head of Learning Centres John Paul College

Ivan I. Dear: A Wire Wizard Peta Poletti

Ivan I. Dear: A Wire Wizard is a wonderfully original book from New Zealand Author Peta Poletti. A story for young readers (3-7 years) that encourages thinking and originality, with a “snip snip” of his pliers and a “twist twist” of his wrist, Ivan solves all sorts of problems - just like that. However, sometimes things can go haywire and unforeseen problems occur! Full of silly humour and skilfully illustrated by Scott Pearson, this book is excellent for young readers to dive in and absorb Ivan’s creativity. Wellplaced repetition allows listeners the opportunity to join in when Ivan is read aloud, and the giggles from the audience as they uncover Ivan’s inventive solutions are infectious. Summer Days Out

The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bront Mettlestone Jaclyn Moriarty I’m always amazed by how diverse and individual each student’s taste in literature can be, however I have one excellent book recommendation that truly has something for everyone. It is set in an imaginative world full of extraordinary characters getting up to all sorts of adventures. The book follows 10-year-old Bronte who learns her parents have been killed by pirates and left her some very specific tasks to undertake. If Bronte does not carry out these tasks carefully then there will be disastrous consequences. The tasks lead her to connect with some terrific characters, including her 11 aunts, and take the reader on a very enjoyable and thought-provoking journey. The story makes us think about how well we know people and how they may influence our lives. It is well written, entertaining and possesses a great ending. The book would make a wonderful companion for the summer school break for boys and girls around 10 years of age and above. Megan Stuart | Coordinator of Information Services Canterbury College

Marsh and Me

Martine Murray

Set in the late blush of the Australian summer, this novel takes us into the pre-adolescent world of Joey M. Green. Joey, like many children his age, feels he just isn’t good enough…at anything! He does, however, have a place to visit where he can be whoever he wants to be, to shine… ‘The Hill.’ When Joey finds that someone has built a treehouse there, he sets out to discover who it is. He gets a surprise to learn a wild-eyed young girl is the architect and creator. After a disastrous first meeting, the two become hesitant friends and over the course of this beautifully written story, help each other to learn the value of their place in the world. I was drawn in immediately to follow along with Joey on his journey of self-discovery. I feel this story would appeal to both boys and girls from ages 10 up and has been popular amongst our students. A great summer time read! Elaine Varley | Library Aide Grace Lutheran Primary School

Room on our Rock Kate and Jol Temple

‘Room on our Rock’ is a cleverly written book showing there are two sides to a story. The book tells the story of a mother seal and her pup who are searching for a new and safe place to live. They come across a seal family of three living on a rock. When reading the book from front to back, you read a heart-wrenching tale of the seal family believing there is no room on their rock for anyone else. The mother and her pup are clearly not welcome. Read the book from the back to the front cover and you get a different story. This time the three seals warmly welcome the mum and pup to their rock. The text is simple and the pictures support the story when read either way. An excellent book for showing sharing and compassion.

The Fall

Tristan Bancks

Tristan Bancks’ latest novel is a gripping story of suspense and tension suitable for children 10+. Sam’s hero is his Dad, a crime journalist; the only problem is Sam has never met him. Imagine Sam’s excitement when he learns that he is going to stay with his Dad following an operation on his leg. However, the longed for visit doesn’t go the way Sam imagined. Late one night, Sam hears loud noises coming from a neighbour’s apartment. When he goes to the window to investigate Sam witnesses someone falling from the sixth floor balcony. Sam goes to wake his Dad, but his bed is empty and he is not in the apartment. As the mystery unfolds Sam learns more about himself, his hard-working Mum, and develops a longed-for relationship with his Dad. The Little Refugee: The inspiring true story of Australia’s Happiest Refugee Anh Do and Suzanne Do The loveable Anh Do delighted readers with his best-selling autobiography The Happiest Refugee, and this picture book version allows younger readers (and older ones!) to experience part of that story. Written with his wife Suzanne, and illustrated by one of Australia’s mostloved illustrators, Bruce Whatley, The Little Refugee follows Anh’s journey from happy child in worn-torn Vietnam, to refugee on a dangerous boat journey, through to becoming class captain of his Australian primary school. Anh’s capacity to find joy and hope in the worst of circumstances shines through the text. Written from the child’s point of view, students of all ages can connect with the text, however the story is particularly poignant and personal for the students of St James College who are themselves refugees. Lee Bess | Librarian St James College

Wishtree

Katherine Applegate

Red is an oak tree that is the neighbourhood’s Wishtree. From the safe harbour of Red’s branches, Bongo the crow and her animal friends watch over the neighbourhood. The non-human protagonists have very recognisable human characteristics and, with the story being told through their eyes, the themes of tolerance, intolerance, friendship, kindness and humility are explored in a safe place. A charming whimsy pervades this quiet friendship book and the illustrations add to the fun. The holidays are the time to enjoy the descriptive writing: a sky is described as ‘freckled with stars’; a crow’s eyes are ‘like morning blackberries, dark and dewy’. This story promotes acceptance and empathy and is full of quiet wisdom, but does not shy away from some thorny issues of modern life. A book for sharing! Parenting

THE ONLINE GAMES YOUR KIDS LOVE – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW & DO TO ENSURE THEY’RE PLAYING SAFELY Research shows the vast majority of Australian children and teenagers have access to the Internet, and many are using it for gaming too. Gaming is a hot topic here in Australia. It’s a popular pastime for lots of people, not just kids. Many parents fear their children are or will become addicted, and wonder what their children are being exposed to as the language and conversations online are frequently colourful. Not knowing what they’re doing and with whom has many parents confused and scared. So what guidance can we give? How much time is long is too long to be online? What are rules around gaming when your kids are telling you they’re “just playing with their friends” – but online – because, let’s be real here, this is how many of our kids now connect with their friends. Online gaming does have some benefits but it’s important that parents assist their kids by getting their heads around the games they’re playing and the risks that are present. When you have some idea of what your kids are doing and why they love it, it makes it so much easier to have open conversations with them about what they’re doing online and with whom. Here are our 5 most popular online games and our tips on what you can do to help manage your kids’ safety while online.

FORTNITE: BATTLE ROYALE What is it? Fortnite is arguably the most played and talked about gaming sensation ever. Its popularity is immense and people of ages play. At its essence, Fortnite: Battle Royale is a free game (though trust me you will be asked for very real money by your child at some point for outfits, extra ammunition, dance moves and more) and it pits up to 100 players against each other with the goal to be the last one standing. The game enables users to team up, loot from others, build structures to climb or protect themselves, and battle, while the war zone is reducing in size forcing players to confront each other.

PUBG OR PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS What is it? PBUG is not unlike Fortnite in that it’s a first-person shooter game, with 100 players all fighting to be the last one standing; kill or be killed. PUBG doesn’t have any building elements in the game but it does have vehicles. Players can drive cars, boats, motorcycles and more as they move around the map.

M: Violence and online activity. Moderate impact violence with mild impact themes.

What should parents be aware of? Parents need to be aware that children can talk to strangers in the game and that swearing and inappropriate language is common. Whilst the violence isn’t explicit due to the cartoon nature of the game, make no mistake this game is kill or be killed. As mentioned above the game is free but the swag is not, so if you do buy your child some V-Bucks to spend online it is strongly suggested that you remove your card details from the system straight after to avoid unintentional purchases later down the track.

What is it rated? MA15+: Strong violence and online activity. Strong impact violence and moderate impact themes.

What should parents be aware of?

PBUG is far more realistic and graphic than Fortnite. It’s grittier and the deaths are bloodier.

Due to the game being more raw, the language used by players tends to be more profane. The online interactions are often quite obscene and offensive, due in part to the average player being a little older. This chat feature can be turned off in the settings and it’s advised that parents check the options available and set them as appropriate for you and your child.

ROBLOX

What is it rated?

What is it? Roblox is a huge online platform where players create and interact in what its makers describe as “immersive 3D worlds.” Although Roblox is visually not as appealing as many other games, it attracts millions of players together online where they create their own worlds and play in other’s worlds too. Roblox is a free game but if you want to furnish your house or buy an outfit then real money will be required.

16

What is it rated?

Your Local Families Magazine December 2018 / January 2019

PG: Mild violence and online activity. Mild impact violence and very mild impact themes.

What should parents be aware of? Parents should watch out for user created games and rooms. Players invite each other into their rooms and houses and this is when things can get inappropriate. Adult content and violence have been found and strangers routinely approach players. It’s important that you setup and use the available privacy settings and account restrictions. The online chat is difficult to monitor due to how Roblox allows users to engage, so check the settings and set age appropriate boundaries for the game.

Parenting MINECRAFT What is it? Minecraft is a virtual 3D Lego-ish building game where players create whole worlds, with buildings varying from the basic to the extraordinary. Minecraft is a really creative outlet for many people, and whilst it’s not free, after the initial purchase there are no more in-game purchases.

What is it rated? PG: Mild fantasy themes and violence. Mild impact violence and themes. Very mild impact language.

What should parents be aware of? Minecraft doesn’t have any graphic content as such but it does have a few monsters, zombies, extra large spiders and the like. They imagery on Minecraft is very cartoon/Lego-like though so for most it’s not scary. Depending on how your child is playing Minecraft there is the ability to chat and play with friends or strangers online, but there are some settings available to limit the risk. If you allow your children to play with other people online be aware that language can be at times inappropriate.

OVERWATCH

SIX TIPS FOR ONLINE SAFETY FOR GAMERS 1 Get involved. Take an interest in what your kids are playing online.

2 Do your research. Is this game suitable for your child?

3

What is it? Overwatch is a team-based shooting game. You are assigned into two teams of six players. Each player then selects to be a character or hero and they compete to secure and defend control points or act as an escort across the map. The general look of Overwatch is compared to Pixar animations and its heroes all have their own unique set of abilities. What is notably different about this game is that there is no single player option; you must be part of a team and work together to win.

Discuss how to behave online. What language is acceptable and what are your expectations of them.

What is it rated?

Setup all available privacy and security settings. Then explain why to your children and monitor them.

M: Violence and online activity. Moderate impact violence with mild impact themes and language.

4

What should parents be aware of? The violence in this game is pretty mild, there’s nothing overall graphic and it’s generally considered to be a positive kid-friendly game. However, it is a team game, which means interacting online with friends and strangers and with that comes the risk of being exposed to inappropriate language and conversations. You can also block players, chat and voice features though this will make it very difficult to play a team game.

5 Be online savvy. Teach kids not to share personal information online.

6 For more advice on keeping your child safe online or to download the ‘Online Safety for Gamers’ fact sheet, visit

www.code9parent.com.au

Online gaming can be addictive. Set boundaries and be open to renegotiations when timely and appropriate.
