Let’s Go Places:

New child pedestrian safety campaign launched for parents

Parents and kids are being encouraged to go places hand in hand as part of a new child pedestrian safety campaign. Hand in Hand. Let’s go places is a campaign created by QUT’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q) following a Australia-wide survey of parents focused on keeping kids safe around roads and cars. The campaign is all about kids, children aged 3-9 years old who are at risk of becoming involved in pedestrian/vehicle crashes. Research has shown that until the age of about nine, children’s perceptual and cognitive abilities are not sufficiently developed to allow them to make sound judgements when they are crossing roads. It’s hard for them to judge vehicle distances and speeds. What’s more, many crashes occur when they are unsupervised, or they impulsively run out between parked cars. The new campaign materials include a series of posters and flyers, as well as a children's activity sheet and two videos. Parents and carers are encouraged to download and print the resources for displaying in their workplaces, schools or child-care centres, and hard copies are available direct from CARRS-Q. This Hand in Hand. Let’s go places campaign is an initiative of CARRS-Q and supported by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Motor Accident Insurance Commission and the RACQ. Families Magazine are looking for a family photo to be the ‘face’ of Families Magazine April/May 2016 Issue. Could your family be our next front cover and be seen on 40, 000 copies across the area?

We are asking local families to email us a photo of their family for us to consider. However, there are a few ‘rules’… the photo must be portrait in shape, it must have room at the top for our logo USEFUL | RELEVANT | LOCAL | INSPIRED and at the bottom for an advert or banner. It must be in high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) which basically means the original photo from the camera and not photo shopped. It doesn’t have to be from a professional photographer, but professionals are also welcome to enter. All photos become our property but we will never use them without the owner’s written permission… and that’s it. 09FMB.indd 1

Back to School AFTER Australia Day in 2016 Queensland state schools will start the 2016 year on Wednesday 27 January after Education Minister Kate Jones approved a change to the school calendar. It is impractical for students to come back from their summer break for only one day, then celebrate Australia Day on the Tuesday and then go back to school on the Wednesday. Parents know how important routines and consistency are – especially for Prep students beginning school for the first time. Monday 25 January will now be a pupil-free day with the school term to start for students on Wednesday 27 January 2016. School calendars have now been updated and the new Term 1 2016 start date will be communicated to all schools. Families News From our Early Education Expert and columnist, Louise Carlile

The BIG Step to Prep Children’s ‘red book’ gets an update to help with school entry assessments From September 2015, the Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS) tool will be included in the Personal Health Record (commonly referred to as the ‘red book’) provided to the family of every newborn in Queensland. Children’s Health Queensland is supporting the statewide adoption of the PEDS to improve identification rates of children with developmental and behavioural issues before they start school. Currently more than 25 per cent of children begin school underprepared to embark on their formal education. The PEDS is an evidence-based questionnaire that parents can complete at home or in consultation with their health care provider at a child’s designated health checks at six months, 12 months, 18 months, 2.5 years to 3.5 years, and four to five years. The tested and reliable questions include: - Do you have any concerns about how your child talks and makes speech sounds? - Do you have any concerns about how your child understands what you say? - Do you have any concerns about how your child is learning to do things for himself/herself? - Do you have any concerns about how your child behaves? Parents and carers know their child better than anyone else does, and may notice things about their child’s behaviour and development that no one else has. Early intervention aims to maximise skills, minimise the functional impact of developmental issues, and prevent the development of secondary difficulties, such as frustration, anger and sadness, which can add to the child and family’s challenges. For more information about the PEDS, see www.childrens.health.qld.gov. au/community-health/personal-health-record/peds

W

hile many of us are counting down to the last drop off for 2015, those with children starting school next year are experiencing varied emotions. It is both an exciting and daunting time for parents and children, and well worth reflecting on how to best prepare yourself and your child. Everyone wants day one to be wonderful but this can overwhelm and complicate how we communicate with our soon–to–be–preppies. Over the next several weeks to January 25th take care to consider your approach to preparing your child. Discuss classroom and playground routines and expectations drawing on their strengths and presenting their individual challenges honestly and positively. They are stepping into a new chapter of growth (as are you) and for them to hit the ground running, they will need you to work with them as a team. It’s easy for us as parents to get caught up in providing all the physical things, managing routines, lunchboxes and the new social community of school. But this needs to be managed within the context of giving your child the best chance of early success (and by success I mean they are happy, enthusiastic and engaged). Try and resist overwhelming the child with all of the above and communicate with them productively each day as they settle in. Listen and encourage them, respect them as little citizens and show them that you have every confidence in their ability to grow and shine as capable learners. Reinforce where appropriate and work constructively to address the challenges along the way. And there will be some. Dismiss the temptation to compare your child. Learning is not a race. It is a journey to be enjoyed.

Education

To Prep, or Not To Prep Should I delay my child’s entry to school?

S

tarting school can be a very exciting time – new friends, a new environment, new things to learn. But if you’ve ever had a gut feeling that maybe your child isn’t ready for Prep, then here are two main areas to consider.

 Readiness To Learn: Does your child melt down if she can’t draw something that looks perfect? Or is she willing to give it another go? Can your child comfortably enter new situations (even though a few small tears might be shed), or does he shrink into his shell? Is your child able to ask for, and accept, help if she is having trouble, or does she sit and wait for someone to ask her? All of these points relate to areas of ‘readiness to learn’ – and note none of them refer to a child’s ability to recognise all of the letters of the alphabet. Resilience, or the ability to withstand and bounce back from difficulty conditions: If your child is able to brush themselves off, pick themselves up and start again (and yes, with a little help from the significant people in their lives), then this shows a readiness to learn.

8

Emotional maturity, or the ability to hold themselves together in the face of adversity and not crumple into an emotional heap: Whilst it is absolutely normal and more than acceptable for a child to cry if they are feeling overwhelmed, out of control, angry or sad, if your child is able to reign in those emotional outbursts and self regulate, then their ability to cope with difficulty and challenges in a school setting is enhanced. Independence, or the ability to think and act for themselves: If your child is able to ask for help independently, or follow instructions without requiring numerous additional prompts, or remember prior knowledge and apply it to a current situation, then their ability to flourish in a school setting is likely to be high.

 Readiness For School: School readiness is important, as it is foundational to a child’s success at school and to life opportunities in general (Dockett & Perry, 2002). Children’s identities as learners are cemented early in formal schooling, and it is important for your child to feel successful in their learning (Moore, 2006).

Your Local Families Magazine - December/January 2016

Chronological age. Whilst some children who are born later in the school year (ie March to July) may in fact be ready and raring to learn and have the school readiness skills described previously, there are significant implications in being the ‘youngest’ in a classroom. Their peers can be up to 11.5 months older than them, with increased time to have developed school readiness skills. Whilst children can indeed be exposed to learning beyond their current ‘developmental capabilities’, it is important to recognise where the child is ‘at’ and cater for those abilities. Fine and Gross Motor Skills. Fine motor skills are small movements that use the small muscles of the fingers, toes, wrists, lips, and tongue (particularly used in writing). Gross motor skills are the bigger movements that use the large muscles in the arms, legs, torso, and feet (important for a child’s endurance to last 6 hours at school). Gross motor skills such as core strength will impact upon a child’s ability to sit on the floor, or at a table. This then impacts on their fine motor skills for writing – if a child has low core strength and cannot sit at a table for a good period of time, their writing will be less developed than their peers. Hand-eye

Education coordination also significantly impacts on a child’s ability to focus on their teacher, copy items from the whiteboard and participate in many other classroom activities. If these skills are less developed, it may impact upon a child’s ability to learn and develop in a formalised school setting.

The decision to head to Prep is a big one, not to be undertaken lightly. Don’t be afraid to ask the question – “Is my child really ready for Prep?”

Kylie Barker is a mother of three boys, a Registered Paediatric Nurse and an Early Childhood Teacher working at Alderley Kindergarten.

Additional needs, such as a speech delay, can also significantly impact on a child’s readiness to learn. If your child has difficulties in understanding and using language, these may become more apparent when she is in a busy classroom. Schools are becoming increasingly responsive to the varying levels of development each group of children arrive with, and it is important to investigate the school that your child will be attending – will they be responsive to your child’s needs? Are they willing to provide additional support should your child need help? Discuss your child’s developmental level with their Kindergarten teacher, the Prep teacher and the Principal of the school and have an open, honest discussion about your concerns. It can only help to have everyone on the same page. There are options available if you do not feel that your child is ready for Prep, such as a delayed exit from Kindergarten. It is nothing to be ashamed of – it is important that you consider the needs of your child in order for your child to feel successful at school. Schools tend to prefer children to be ready for school and are happy to accept children who have

Ready for Prep resources on our website: an approved delayed exit from Pre-Prep or Kindergarten (however, please confirm this with your school’s Principal). Schools are leaning away from repeating children in formal schooling as there is significant evidence that shows it does not benefit the child and can in fact impede their social, emotional and academic development (McGrath, 2007). Participation in high quality early child care and education programs can contribute positively to children’s development during the early years and therefore to their school readiness (Boethel, 2004). A play-based, interest led environment is ideal as it allows the child to develop at their own rate without the pressures of formalised instruction.

Parenting

When Kids Go To Work: Y

What Every Parent Needs to Know

our child’s first job is an important milestone in the life of your family and also your child. Often, children cannot wait to get out the door to start earning a bit of money and make their mark in the world. However, for parents, it can all be a little daunting with the many rules and restrictions around age and working hours for young children and school children. This area of law is governed by state legislation which means the rules and regulations may differ from state to state. This article is intended to provide a summary of the relevant law in Queensland.

 Is there a certain age that a child can

start working?

In Queensland, the rule of thumb is that a child must be at least 13 years before they can obtain employment . However, like most things, there are exceptions to the rule. For example, a child is able to carry out supervised delivery work such as delivering newspapers, advertising material or similar items from the age of 11. For any parents of potential ‘child stars’ you might be surprised to know that there is no minimum age for children to work in the entertainment industry. Even young children who are not yet at school (as well as babies) can work in this industry. There are, however, specific provisions that apply to ensure the protection of children.

 What type of work can children do? The meaning of “work” has a broad definition. Fortunately for parents, this work does not extend to domestic chores! It also does not include work experience, vocational placements, apprenticeships, traineeships , or work performed in a family business that is totally owned by a close adult relative of the child .

 Do parents have to do anything? Parents must provide their consent before a child is able to start working. They can do so by completing a ‘Parent’s Consent Form’, which can be found on the Department of Justice’s website (www.justice.qld.gov.au). A new form must be completed and provided to the employer if the child’s school hours change, within 14 days of the change. Parents should be aware that it is illegal for an employer to employ a child without a signed parent’s consent form or a special circumstances certificate from the Department of Justice and Attorney-General. It is also illegal for a parent to employ or permit their child to work during school hours unless they have a reasonable excuse.

Hayley Atkinson is a Collaborative Family Lawyer at Brisbane Family Law Centre

If your child is under 16 years and has completed compulsory schooling – i.e year 10 – then he or she is not considered as a ‘school aged child’ and their working hours will not be limited by the legislation.

How to Deal With

Bites and Stings Summer in Queensland is a great time to get out and about with your family. But if you encounter one of these ‘less than friendly’ natives, here are some first aid tips for your family. By Susan Teerds of Kidsafe QLD.

A

bout 36 children under the age of 14 are treated each week at a Queensland emergency department for venomous bites or stings. Across Australia, six children under the age of nine are admitted to hospital each week due to a bite or sting, while a third of hospital treatments for bites and stings are for spider bites. Children are more vulnerable to stings and bites because they are less cautious than adults and more likely to get close to venomous creatures with boys more likely than girls to receive a bite or a sting! Because children have smaller bodies and weigh less than adults, they are more susceptible to the effects of venom. In Queensland, spider bites are the most common type of bites and stings, closely followed by stings from bees and wasps. Bites and stings from snakes, jellyfish, ants and ticks are also common. The most severe bites and stings involve jellyfish, snakes or spiders. Most often, children are bitten or stung around the home, garden or garage, and bites and stings are more common in the warmer months of the year. Snakes are more commonly seen and are more aggressive during the warmer weather, when they are hunting for a mate (often in January).

Most deaths are from anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can cause parts of the body to swell up (usually face or throat), preventing a child from breathing. In severe cases, children may go into shock within a few minutes and the heart can stop.

For 24-hour advice on poisonings, bites and stings, call the Poisons information Centre – 13 11 26.

Prevention of Bites and Stings is Better than Cure • Check around your home for snakes and spiders. • Remove leftover building materials and rubbish. • Keep grass and weeds short and advise your local council of overgrown and hazardous blocks nearby. • Supervise your children when outdoors. • Teach children to avoid snakes and spiders and to tell you if they see one. • Recognise symptoms of bites and stings – learn first aid.

Spiders: Children are mostly bitten on the upper arm or lower leg. Serious spider bites in Australia are most commonly due to redback spider bites, and less frequently, funnel-web spiders. Pain and discomfort occurs in all spider bites, and red marks and itchiness occur in most spider bites. However, most spider bites are not dangerous. Symptoms of serious spider bite may include redness and itching, sweating, pain, headache, nausea, tiredness and muscular spasms. If your child has these symptoms and you suspect that they have been bitten by a spider, seek medical attention urgently. Snakes: Dangerous snake bites in Australia are usually due to five main species – brown snakes, tiger snakes, black snakes, taipans, and death adders. In Queensland, snake bites requiring hospitalisation are mostly due to brown snakes. Children are mostly bitten on the lower leg or foot. Symptoms include pain and

"Children are more vulnerable to stings and bites because they are less cautious than adults and more likely to get close to venomous creatures” swelling at the bite site, muscle tenderness/ weakness, drooping eyelids, change in vision, paralysis and difficulty in breathing. It can be difficult to identify poisonous snakes from nonpoisonous varieties, so if your child is bitten by any snake, seek urgent medical care.

First Aid for Common Bites and Stings

Bee/wasps: Pain and swelling at the site of the sting are common. Stings from bees and wasps are not usually serious, but an allergic reaction to the sting may occur, which can be life-threatening.

Snakes: Treat any snake bite as serious. Keep the child calm and still, apply a firm bandage over the bite area and bandage the whole limb. Use splints to prevent movement of the limb. Do not attempt to catch the snake and do not wash the wound. A sample of the venom is required to identify the snake. Seek urgent medical attention.

Ticks: Tick bites mostly occur on the face, head or neck, but can be found elsewhere. Tick bites are usually harmless but if the tick remains in the body, paralysis can occur. Symptoms include general unsteadiness, drowsiness, blurred vision, and muscle weakness (arms, legs or face). Ants: Ant bites are common on the arms and legs. Redness, pain and swelling at the bite site are the most common effects of an ant bite. Jellyfish: Most hospitalisations from jellyfish stings are due to the irukanji jellyfish. In Queensland, stings from box jellyfish and bluebottles are also common. Stings from jellyfish are painful and can cause a rash or welts, while stings from box and irukandji jelly fish can be life-threatening. Symptoms may include severe backache, chest and abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and sweating.

Spiders: Keep the child calm. If you suspect that your child may have been bitten by a redback spider or a funnel-web spider, call 000.

Bee/wasps: Remove the sting by scraping it off with a fingernail without squeezing. Do not squeeze or pull. Wash the area and apply ice to reduce pain and swelling. Seek medical attention if an allergic reaction occurs. Ticks: Using fine-tipped tweezers, grip the tick behind the head as close as possible to the skin. Gently pull the tick straight out with steady pressure. Do not squeeze or attempt to kill the tick. Seek medical advice. Ants: Apply ice to the affected area. Jellyfish: Bluebottle stings should be doused with warm (not hot) water. If your child is stung by a box or irukandji jellyfish, wash the area with vinegar and seek urgent medical attention.

Digging for

REAL DINOSAURS By Karen Ghidella

A

s a Mum of twin 5 year old boys, there have been quite a few ridiculous things I’ve said over the years. “Don’t lick the dinosaur bones kids, they’re 95 million years old, it’s a little gross”. I think this one tops it.

We returned home from our 14 day road trip through Outback Queensland with a handful of fossils and a huge bucket full of rocks. They’re hidden away and ready to examine for fossils on a rainy day. Up until a year ago I had no idea that Queensland has the world’s only recorded dinosaur stampede, that you can dig for REAL dinosaur fossils, that OUR country has an attraction that’s real, that’s fun, that’s educational, that tops anything you’ll ever see and do at Disneyland! And… I had no idea that this city chick (whose idea of “roughing it” is staying at a motel that doesn’t have room service) could actually do this! I took along my friend Shakira (a Mum from my kids’ school, I accidentally called her Anastacia for 6 months after meeting her and she never corrected me, so I figured she’d be able to put up with me for a few weeks). We took our kids, left our hubbies at home and explored the outback with not much more than a tent, our clothes and several bags full of random stuff that we really shouldn’t have packed.

Families Travel

AUSTRALIA’S DINOSAUR TRAIL The Dinosaur Trail is the name of this amazing attraction, it’s situated several hours north of Longreach and it’s a bucket list item, a family holiday must do. It’s made up of lots of mini attractions scattered between three towns: Winton, Richmond and Hughenden, and it’s only a 1,400km from Brisbane!

 Winton Winton is a fun town with an amazing history, a place, the home of the waterhole used as inspiration for Banjo Patterson’s Waltzing Matilda, and the North Gregory Hotel, where he first performed the song. If you head 2.5 hours north east, you’ll be able to visit “Walkabout Creek”, remember the hotel from Crocodile Dundee? Australia’s Dinosaur Trail starts at Winton, a 2 hour drive from Longreach.

The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum It’s here that you’ll be able to join a guided tour and get up close and personal with Australia’s largest dinosaur fossil collection (and meet Banjo, Australia’s most significant and complete carnivorous dinosaur). If you were wondering why my children were actually licking dinosaur fossils, you can blame the tour guide for this little incident as he cheekily explains “the quickest way to determine if a fossil is a dinosaur fossil or some other animal is to lick it, if it sticks to your tongue it’s a fossil”.

Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways Also in Winton is Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways, the world’s only recorded evidence of a dinosaur stampede. Here we were thinking that the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Uluru were our biggest national monuments and tourist attractions. Hello! I’d think that seeing a 95 million year old dinosaur stampede with footprints of over 3,000 dinosaurs would kind of trump the others. Given it’s the only one on the planet and all.

 Richmond Don’t worry about the heat, they obviously strategically placed their gorgeous free water park in the middle of town for crazy tourists like us. After the dig, you’ll be able to cool down on the main street, but onto the highlight of everything dinosaurs… the dinosaur dig!

Fossil Hunting Site Tour No, it’s not a sandpit at the museum, no, it’s not a little fenced off area that’s been setup to allow visitors to have a play… this is real dinosaur digging people! A word of advice, please don’t use the phrase “dinosaur hunting” if you have young children, as we drove along the dirt road heading towards the dig area the children were suddenly quite silent. One of my children asked “ummm, Mama, are they friendly dinosaurs, will they eat us”? “They are dead sweety, remember, don’t lick the bones”. We could have spent the whole day here, I was convinced I was going to find myself a 10 metre long dinosaur fossil (I just didn’t have enough time), but much to the children’s delight we left with several fossils …. And DINOSAUR POO! Yes, 95 million year old dinosaur poo!

Kronosaurus Korner

Kronosaurus Korner is a spectacular museum that is perfectly structured for kids, there’s plenty to look at and even a lot of things to touch and do. Right in the corner, next to the kids play area, there are experts ready to identify your dinosaur digging treasures. One of the staff told me about the 7 year old who found ancient ichthyosaur bones earlier this year. Whatever! My dinosaur poo is way cooler. Pffft.

 Hughenden We went to Hughenden to visit the Hughie at the Flinders Discovery Centre. He’s the famous life size replica of the Muttaburrasaurus. However, if you’re a budding photographer (or just like photos of your kids), head up to Mt Walker at sunrise or sunset with your wine and cheese and enjoy the most spectacular sunset you’ve ever seen. It’s an amazing opportunity to take some beautiful photos of your children.

 Getting There We did a 14 day road trip from Brisbane, passing through Mitchell, Tambo, Blackall, Longreach, Barcaldine and Arcadia Valley… just to name a few. If you have limited time there are other options, fly into Longreach and hire a car. I’d recommend spending at least two days there, or catch the Spirit of the Outback (a train), or even a bus! There’s accommodation styles suitable for every budget and adventure level! Best. Adventure. Ever. So, on your next family holiday, ditch Disneyland, get out there and go lick some 95 million year old dinosaur fossils!

Ways to Save this Summer

You might be surprised at how much you can save with our tips, while still creating memories with your children over summer.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Go to bed early and wake up with the birds. Go for a long day hike and pack a picnic to eat along the way. And remember these safety tips: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/family-health/bush-safety-rulesfor-families Camp in the backyard. Use whatever camping gear you have or borrow what you might need from friends or neighbours. Tree swings cost a lot less than swing sets and create life long memories. Take on the challenge of making one and finding the perfect spot for it with the kids.

Find your closest council pool and head there on the hottest days. Pack a picnic (if you are allowed) and it can be a low cost way to spend the day. www.familiesmagazine.com.au/attractions/findpublic-swimming-pools-in-brisbane Invest in a sprinkler head (check what your local water restrictions are). Turn the sprinkler on each afternoon when the grumpies set in from the heat. Did you know your local council library has DVDs? You can borrow them for free, pop your own popcorn and make your own pizza for an inexpensive movie night.

Visit one of the free aquatic parklands in and around Brisbane. The best time to go is in the early morning. Take a pancake mix for an easy BBQ brekkie.

8

• South Bank Parklands, South Bank • Robelle Domain Springfield Central Parklands, Springfield Central • Settlement Cove Lagoon, Redcliffe • Rocks Riverside Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks • Wynnum Water Park, Wynnum

13

Let children paint favourite words on wooden boards and rocks with smooth surfaces. Set these around the yard for inspiration.

14

Consider buying a yearly pass to a theme park, zoo or museum, or ask grandparents to buy them for the kids for their birthdays/Christmas. Then if you pack your own food, you will enjoy a very reasonable day out over and over again.

15

Challenge your family to a ‘no spend weekend’. You will be surprised with the ideas your kids come up with if you get them involved in the planning of the weekend.

16

Have a pyjama day. Everybody has to stay in their PJs ALL day, so they will have to think of lots of things to keep occupied – board games, movies, baking etc.

Have a family garage sale. Let the children decide what they would like to sell and for how much. They can use the money they make on a special experience.

9

Head for the beach. Keep a bag of swimmers, towels, binoculars and buckets ready for an impromptu romp at the beach.

10

11 12

Make sun tea. Buy bulk quantities of black tea bags, remove the tags from 10 to 12 bags, and leave a large glass jug in the sun until the water turns amber. Create your own tasty versions with flavours such as ‘Raspberry Zinger’. Try our other recipes too: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/recipes

Go pond skimming. Take a small net and a clear plastic container and dip it in the water. You will be amazed at what creatures you find!

Kids love to contribute. Put a list of jobs on the fridge with how much you are prepared to pay for them, and let the children choose what they would like to do. Jobs could include – washing the car, sorting out photos, weeding and sweeping out the garage.

Becoming a Mother by Leisa Stathis explores the emotional journey that follows the birth of a baby. It reminds us that, as mothers, in amongst all that we don’t know and feel we are doing wrong, there are many things we are doing wonderfully right. This book releases women from the pressure to be perfect mothers and documents the often unspoken challenges of caring for a baby and the complex emotions we experience in the first year. Stories from other women offer reassurance and comfort; we are not alone. This is a time of profound transformation – and for all of its challenges, a wonderfully rich experience. Our babies grow and we do too. It is a love story like no other. It is the passage of becoming a mother. Follow author Leisa Stathis at www.leisastathis.com
