Pregnancy Distress – revisiting some myths

Welcome to our Toddlers & Childcare Issue I spend too much time of Facebook, yet I find the quotes and inspiration I sometimes find in my ‘news feed’ are helping to shape the way I think – in a good way. I am reminded to slow down, I am reminded to remember how small my children are, I am reminded that I am doing the best that I can, on any given day. A recent post on our page reminded me that our children are only children for such a short period of time. It said something like they are ‘newborns’ for a month, ‘infants’ for a year, ‘toddlers’ for 2 years and then they move on to being ‘pre-schoolers’, ‘children’ and ‘teenagers’. And then…in the blink of an eye, they are off! In this issue we look at the toddler and pre-schooler time frame – a short (although it seems like an eternity when you are ‘in’ it) time frame of around 4 years in total. It is such a vital time of development, of growth, of learning. We have some wonderful articles again this issue. Playgroup QLD has written for us, sharing two local stories – one about the contact person who runs a local playgroup and one story about a dad who attends regularly with his children. We hope it inspires you to join your local playgroup – if you haven’t already done so! We are also fortunate to be blessed with wonderful childcare and learning centres across Brisbane that support and nurture our children. Three of these have written for us about the value of a quality centre in these formative years. Read about ‘Why Kindy is Important’ on page 11, the ‘Progression of Prep children’ on page 13 and learn about the exciting ‘Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Learning’ on pages 22 & 23. All these articles talk about the importance of a quality childcare provision for our gorgeous Brisbane children. I hope they give you some valuable information about what to look for when you are searching for your ‘next step’ for your little one. We also have pulled out all the stops and rounded up a huge amount of Families Fun filled activities for the September school holidays and beyond. Are you ‘Trick or Treating’? Is it something your family participates in over the Halloween period? Come and join the conversation on our Facebook page (remember I spend a lot of time there, mostly chatting with our readers, like you!), we’d love you to join in on our 9pm chats! See you there!

New book 'Hold My Hand' keeps children safe According to RACQ “1 Australian child is injured in a driveway or a car park from a low speed vehicle run over every week.” Have you wondered how to teach your child about safety in and around cars? As adults we know all about the dangers of reversing cars. For many parents, navigating a car park with a toddler has the potential to turn into a nightmare as a busy car park is a new and often exciting experience for a young child. Toddlers are curious, quick, and unpredictable and this makes them very much at risk of an injury because they can’t be seen by a reversing car. Children need lots of assistance from adults, so teaching young children about safety in and around cars from an early age is essential in reducing the risk of injury. Author Luise Manning’s new book “Hold My Hand” is great for parents/caregivers to share with young children, to teach them pedestrian safety at home and in car parks to help them understand the dangers around cars and encourage them to hold hands. It has simple text with catchy rhymes and clear glossy photographs that appeal to children. The book is available from $12 plus $2 postage and handling; or from various book stores in Brisbane. RRP $14.95. Visit www.safetykids.net.au for details.

Pregnancy Distress

Revisiting some myths around the 'glowing bump'

"Psychological distress and mental disorders continue to be perceived and labelled negatively in modern society."

E

xpecting a baby is usually experienced as a source of utmost joy, excitement and glorious expectations for parents. New evidence, however, is having us rethink some myths surrounding the “glowing bump”. Pregnancy, once believed to be a time of greater emotional wellbeing for women, has been linked to a range of mood disorders. Research shows that a growing number of women worldwide are demonstrating high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress during pregnancy. These women are found to have a range of common concerns including loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities,

isolation, prolonged sadness and crying, and uncontrollable worrying about the pregnancy, the baby, labour and parenthood. Psychological distress during pregnancy has been linked to a number of potentially adverse consequences for both bub and mum, such as problematic birth, prematurity, low birth weight, less than optimal adjustment to motherhood, bonding, and postnatal depression. Furthermore, new mums find themselves doubting their own abilities to take care of a newborn, thus enabling a vicious circle of insecurity and low self-esteem.

Family Health While experiencing difficulties during pregnancy and after bub is born is normal, many woman choose not to seek help. This is the result of a complex mix of factors: Nobody talks about this! Popular beliefs work subconsciously in making women feel ashamed if their experience differs from the perfect, settled, fully-prepared mum-to-be, whom we face every place we turn – magazines, GP’s waiting rooms, and often with other women. Australian women, participating in an ongoing study on Pregnancy Mood, Birth and Early Motherhood*, shared a common understanding that “other women could be each other’s worst enemy”, suggesting that there is a lack of honesty, openness and support when it comes to the reality of pregnancy and motherhood. As a result of this “keeping it quiet” attitude, once women become mothers, they often realize how unaware they are about the impact of, and the changes associated with having a baby. This can be especially true for women who have not had the opportunity to experience first-hand parenting through their sisters or close family members and friends. Psychological distress and mental disorders continue to be perceived and labelled negatively in modern society. It is not surprising that a woman does not seek help when she is not coping, when admitting that she is not coping is likely to be viewed as a weakness or deficit in her character. In addition, while women must cope with the perception that others may have of them at this difficult time, they must also battle their own perception of their situation. Women who struggle to cope with the often overwhelming demand of being pregnant and having a baby tend to perceive themselves negatively. This self-stigmatisation is a key reason why many women decide to isolate themselves from friends and family, either by putting the “perfect mum” mask on or by minimising contact with others. What is worse is that this happens not only after a clinical diagnosis of depression, but even in experiences of temporary sadness or irritation, as these are not easily accepted by our culture, again due to the common belief that pregnancy entails only a positive glow. In reality, even in situations where a woman may appear to be well supported (such as where the pregnancy was planned, the woman is financially secure, and she is in a longterm, stable, loving relationship), pregnancy and adjustment to the maternal role can be accompanied with unexpected and confusing sadness. The transition to parenthood is a time for many physiological, social, financial and psychological adjustments. Some difficult psychological changes can include a loss of identity, a loss of autonomy, changes in appearance, and changes in various alternative roles. While many women cope with the changes relatively well, others are more vulnerable to experiencing psychological distress. We need an increased awareness of maternal mental health and

The transition to parenthood is a time for many physiological, social, financial and psychological adjustments. symptoms of depression and anxiety in order to be able to negotiate parenting in an optimal way, and to also offer meaningful advice, support and understanding to other women. Above all we need to share an understanding that pregnancy, as much as any other human experience, is a mixed bag that comes in all colours and shapes, over and above the pink cheeks, ribbons and glowing hearts. Take good care of yourselves mummas, which also means getting the right kind of help for yourself if and when you need it.

We all need to remember, there is no perfect way of doing the motherhood thing!

To Kindy or not to Kindy? In my casual conversations with the parents of young children, the general response is that children who undergo a kindergarten experience will be better prepared to enter the primary school classroom, having developed richer literacy and numeracy skills. This is a worthy response but, from an educator’s perspective, I encourage parents to think longer-term. Much research has been conducted over the years in regard to the age at which formal education should begin. A study by Edward Melhuish of Oxford University highlights the significant positive effect that a kindergarten experience has on children’s literacy and numeracy levels at age 11. A research team in Chicago, headed by Arthur Reynolds, found through its 25-year study that the benefits of a kindergarten education are seen decades later through educational achievement, socioeconomic status, health and reduced crime. Recent studies are reaching the same conclusions: allowing for background factors, children who are exposed to a quality kindergarten education (age 3-4) are much

more likely to excel later in life than those who are not. The benefits of a kindergarten education are long-lasting. So what is it that a kindergarten education offers that is so valuable? First and foremost, let’s be clear. A kindergarten education does not – in fact, can not – replace the priceless education that takes place in a child’s home. Parents are the primary educators of their children. What takes place in the family home is precious and irreplaceable. Kindergartens exist to deliver an education that complements the daily education received at home. In a quality kindergarten, qualified early childhood educators possess a sound knowledge of how young children learn. They are skilled in developing play-based experiences that are rich in learning, and they are trained to identify in children weaknesses that may affect their ability to access curriculum in the future. At kindergarten children explore their world – they learn about themselves and their individuality; they are encouraged to work as a team and they receive adult support in conflict resolution; they make friends and develop a love for learning; they take part in decision-making; they are exposed to the joys of success and encouraged to view failures a stepping stones; they identify, explore and solve problems; their confidence, curiosity, resourcefulness, persistence and courage are fostered; their fine and gross

motor skills are exercised; and their literacy and numeracy skills are nurtured. The enduring nature of a kindergarten experience is sustained only through a highquality educational program. With so many options available to parents, selecting the program that best suits the needs of a family is overwhelming. My advice is simple: visit. When you enter the doors of a kindergarten facility, you will instantly get a feel for the culture of the place. Ask questions and absorb the answers. When you visit ‘the right’ place for your family, you will sense it – you’ll be stimulated and you will crave to become a part of it. The world of kindergarten education is delightful and stimulating, and I encourage you to join the excitement for the long-term benefit of your child. Jane Mueller Jane is the Principal of Living Faith Lutheran Primary School and Kindergarten, on Brisbane’s north side. Jane is passionate about the long-term effects that a high-quality education has on Australia’s future generations, when the focus is just as heavily on the spiritual, social and emotional development of children, as it is on academic maturity.

Why making Music Matters If there is one thing I truly believe as a parent of four children and as early childhood educator is the absolute need for our young children to be ready to learn from day 1 of the prep year.

TODDLERS AND CHILDCARE

Sure, as the owner and director of Wee Make Music I have a vested interest in keeping up with changes to teaching and learning in schools but I am also a parent, the youngest being twins in year 2. From this position I have seen firsthand the significant change in the expectations on our children in their first years of primary education since Queensland schools began transitioning to the national curriculum. Michelle Morris, Educational and developmental Psychologist from Resilient Kids also agrees, “Being ‘prep-ready’ is an important consideration for parents particularly in light of the recent introduction of the National Curriculum and an increased focus from day one on the academic skills of reading, writing and maths”. There has most definitely been a significant shift from a ‘play based, let’s get to know each other and find our feet’ approach in the previous prep programs to ‘structured schedules, measured curriculum outcomes and homework’ in the current system. Don’t misunderstand me, I am certainly not opposed to these changes. Rather I am suggesting that as parents we need to realise that we have a responsibility to prepare our children for prep so they have the best chance of early success and subsequent positive growth. Most people would agree that it is vital that our children enjoy their first year of school and that their experience in the first year informs the way they view the rest of their schooling. With this notion foremost in mind, I cannot be more passionate about the value of music as a tool for preparing children for formal education. You only have to go to the Queensland Government website*, education page to read under Early Years of Schooling that “ ...in the early years of schooling students are viewed as capable learners who have diverse experiences..’.

cooperatively with others) are skills that often take practice. Some children, particularly those who have not been exposed to more formal kindergarten/daycare settings, may find these expectations baffling and unsettling. While one’s definition of ‘capable learners’ will vary, I believe that in the context of school readiness a capable learner is a child with appropriate levels of self-confidence, listening, concentration, fine and gross motor skills, social awareness and etiquette in group situations, problem solving skills and the ability to follow simple and dual task instructions. Developing these skills can take time. For us to give our children the skills they require to be effective learners we need to commit to developing these skills in our children and support them with these outcomes in mind. Early Childhood music classes should provide a fun, supportive and effective environment for developing these essential skills. Within each age appropriate class children (with their parent/grandparent/ support partner) practice fundamental musical concepts of beat, rhythm, movement and melody. A variety of strategies present these concepts so that the child is learning to focus, follow instructions, manipulate various instruments, develop social awareness and team skills, build self-esteem and confidence, develop creativity and language and voice skills. The list goes on. I am passionate about these benefits to children more now than ever and it has driven the writing of our curriculum programs at Wee Make Music. After 9 years in Brisbane (and 3 years previously overseas) I feel very privileged and proud to have been able to share our mission to empower children and their families with the joy of music and apply this in an endeavour to aid in the development of effective and capable little learners, musicians and citizens. *http://education.qld.gov.au/strategic/advice/earlychildhood/index.html

While children are indeed capable learners, in the sense that they are learning from birth, the expectations school places on them about how they will learn (sitting still, listening, following instructions, working

Watch how they GROW! T

he transition from the Pre-Prep/Kindergarten environment to the bigger learning fish pond of Primary School is a key focus in their first year of formal schooling. This transition is designed to be a gradual one with nurturing programs and processes in place for them from their first day of school and slowly easing into more opportunities for independence and mixing with children from other year levels as the year goes by. Primary Schools across Brisbane will be aiming to make the adjustment to school as seamless, joyful and memorable as possible. After all, this is the beginning of their formal learning journey. So what do children learn in school nowadays and how is it different from when we were at school? It is normal for families to ponder such questions, so let’s take a look at the key areas for focus.

The 5 Most Important Areas Young Children Should Learn The Australian Curriculum guides what Prep students learn in their first year and covers the following five areas. This national program is supported by teachers working towards building on the knowledge, skills and understandings that children bring to school from their home environment. • Social and emotional skills are very important. So far in their ‘school’ learning journey Preps have worked to ‘get along’ with others, communicate with classmates and various adults, and manage themselves in terms of planning, problem solving and organising. Prep children are able to make friends, think about others feelings, follow instructions, and express how they feel, follow rules, wait for turns and share. “The Preps have loved making new friends and enjoy their lunch times and afternoon tea times together. “ says one Prep teacher.

• Preps are natural investigators. They are forever curious and ask lots of questions. Inquiry learning and harnessing natural curiosity is done by presenting real-world questions. Prep students gather and organise information, imagine possibilities, transfer information from one context to the next, search for solutions, and reflect on their thinking. • Prep students are starting their journey as 21st century learners. Technology is going to be a big part of their lives. They begin to understand that information can be gathered on the internet, use touch screens to record ideas, computer programs to practise letters and numbers, computer keyboards and mouse to operate devices, use digital devices to record information and sequence or communicate experiences It is important to realise that parents are partners in their child’s learning journey. Parents know what their child is learning and how they are progressing through school reporting processes and other formal and informal ways of communication. Parents will be invited to interviews and written reports are provided throughout the year. Parents are welcomed to special events and are encouraged to visit the classroom environment as well as participate in activities such as reading groups. TODDLERS AND CHILDCARE

The school starters for 2014 have now well and truly settled into ‘big school’ with three school terms already under their hats! We spoke to Grace Lutheran Primary School to find out what their latest cohort of Brisbane Preppies have been learning and how far they have come this year!

• Physical skills are essential to a child’s school life and learning. Students participate in specialist Physical Education lessons which work on developing ‘gross motor’ skills. A Perceptual Motor Program aims to give the child experiences in seeing, hearing, touching, processing, making perceptual judgements and reacting through carefully sequenced activities which children enjoy doing like running, hopping, skipping, jumping, balancing, crawling, climbing, throwing, catching, bowling, sliding, and so on, using a variety of common and specially designed equipment. The child needs the motor skills of balance, locomotion and eye / hand / foot coordination and needs to be fit to function effectively. • Academically there is a big focus on building Literacy and Numeracy skills. Brisbane schools will be aiming to have students who are becoming ‘literate’. This means that Preps are developing strong oral language skills, speak with confidence and maintain a conversation with their peers and adults. They learn about the ‘code’ of English through exploring letter/sound relationships, rhyming words and syllables. Many Preps are able to combine letters to make words and words to make sentences to share information. Students borrow books from the library and take home readers to support their development. In the area of Numeracy many Preps know about numbers to 20 and beyond and solve basic problems involving numbers. They can connect their own experiences with days of the week and compare objects using ideas such as largest, longest, more, less. How to choos

a restrain

your ch TODDLERS AND CHILDCARE

If your booster seat has a tether strap you must ensure it is attached to the correct anchor point. It is safer to use the adult seat belt with the booster seat as the level of mistakes and misuse with H-harnesses is very high and can therefore be dangerous. If your booster has height markings, make sure the child’s shoulder fits within the height markings. If no shoulder markings are present, your child restraint will be weight limited so read the instruction manual.

All children up to at least seven years of age must be secured in a child car restraint and on the back seat of the car. When choosing a child car restraint, age, height and/or weight may all be deciding factors. Once a baby is turned forward facing they need to be in a “toddler” seat until they are a minimum of four years of age. The law is a minimum guideline. Babies must travel rear-facing until a minimum of six months of age. BUT should stay rear facing longer and should not turn forward facing until they can sit on the floor, unassisted, and hold up their head without toppling over. This is an indication of a strong neck. They must also reach the minimum height markings on the newer forward-facing seat. Or, if the seat is a few years old it may have a minimum weight requirement of 8kg. So toddlers are forward facing in a child car seat with a six point harness over the strong bones of their body. If your restraint has height markings, make sure the child’s shoulder fits within the minimum and maximum height parameters. If no shoulder markings are present, your child restraint will be weight limited. This means that the built-in harness has a weight limitation of 18kg.

14

All child car restraints use in Australia must meet the Australian Standard and the Australian Standard sticker is on the side of the restraint. It is illegal to use a seat that has been manufactured overseas and brought into Australia. In Queensland Kidsafe has found that between 70 to 92 percent of child restraints are misused – that is incorrectly used or installed. Make sure the built-in harness is fitted tightly and securely. To test this, fit two fingers in between the child’s collarbone and the harness. The built-in harness should come out over the shoulder and under the earlobe. If the harness is below the toddler’s shoulder, the upper torso can ‘jack knife’ forward resulting in serious injury. The adult seatbelt must be securely and firmly fitted through the correct seatbelt path through the back of the restraint. The top tether strap must be secured to the child restraint anchor point and tightened but not too tight. Check your car’s manual to ensure you are using the child restraint anchor point and not a luggage hook. Keep toddlers in the inbuilt harness until they have outgrown it. At four years the child may move into a booster seat. Keep the child in the booster seat until they have outgrown it. Remember the law is the minimum age a child can progress to the next level of restraint.

Your Local Families Magazine – Brisbane Issue 6 - October/November 2014

Once they are seven years they may sit on the adult seat, but, if your child is small they will be safer staying in their booster seat. In an adult seat, make sure the seatbelt comes across their shoulder and not cutting into their neck. Don’t use a lap only seatbelt for any passenger under sixteen years of age.

Here is a handy 5-step test to see if your seven-year old is ready to sit on the adult seat: 1. Can the child sit with their back against the vehicle seat back? 2. Do the child’s knees bend in front of the edge of the seat? 3. Does the sash belt sit across the middle of the shoulder? 4. Is the lap belt sitting low across the hips touching the thighs? 5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip? If the answer to any of these is no, your child is not ready to sit on the adult seat and will be safer in the booster seat. The major cause of child death and injury in car accidents is failure to properly restrain. Even for a short distance, use a child car restraint.

nt for Make sure the child’s legs and arms are through the appropriate pathways and always read the instruction booklet to ensure correct use and installation. Do not use a restraint more than 10 years old and destroy any restraint that has been in a car that suffered structural damage in a crash. Kidsafe do not recommend using a secondhand restraint if you do not know it’s history.

Ensure it is less than 10 years old, has the Australian Standards sticker visible, instruction sticker visible and have an instruction booklet. A second-hand restraint should also have no visible wear or tear on straps and buckles and check that all adjusters work correctly. The penalty for incorrect use of a restraint or not using a restraint is a $330 fine and 3 demerit points.

Toddlers and Childcare

Toddlers Who Get Up… (and up and up!)

I TODDLERS AND CHILDCARE

s your toddler hopping out of bed or climbing out of their cot? If so, then what you are experiencing is called “Toddler versus Sleep”, a situation where your toddler is having difficulty falling or staying asleep during the night. It is a common sleep issue many toddlers experience between the 18-24 month marks (1.5 to 2 years), in which toddlers may cry out, or climb out of cots or beds and wander around and out of their rooms. This is not only disruptive and potentially dangerous but can set a precedent of bad sleep habits extending well into their early childhood.

Why is my toddler hopping out of bed or climbing out of the cot? • To assert their independence on a world they are starting to understand, explore and learn about

• Separation anxiety • External cues which have been rewarded with certain behaviours, for example your toddler calling out for no reason- and you coming into the room. Calling out will then be associated with your toddler getting his or her way: you coming back into the room and giving attention • Real and imagined fears Toddlers are sleepy little creatures! They need 10-12 hours sleep in the evening and in addition to this will often need a 2 hour nap during the day. A lack of a consistent, calm bedtime routine can be a leading cause of sleep issues. Hopping out of bed soon after being put down is linked with a difficulty in falling asleep. Frequent night waking occurs if your toddler wakes up during the night and is unable to get back to sleep on their own. If your toddler is continually wandering out of their bed and into yours; then you need an action plan stat! There are some things you can implement to make night time sleep time, not stress time.

What can I do? First and foremost, it is important to remember that consistency is key!

A consistent bedtime routine helps to prepare your toddler for sleep. Your toddler’s sleep routine should involve quiet time, relaxation techniques- especially if your toddler is prone to separation anxietyand above all else your toddler’s bedtime routine needs to be consistent. Toddlers will be ready for bed between 6:30 and 7:30. It is between 8pm and 12pm when deep (REM) sleep occurs. During deep sleep cells are replenished and your little ones grow and develop. Being healthy and happy is inextricably linked to sleep, for all ages and stages of life.

Some things to consider: • Avoid loud, boisterous playing before bedtime • Limit TV watching before bed • Avoid asking open ended questions such as “Do you want to go to bed?” as this can often be met with a resounding “No!”

Bath Time Relaxation helps to move your toddler from quiet time to sleep time. Introduce calming essential oils into the evening bath to soothe and relax your toddler before bedtime. Lavender in small quantities is calming and is often used to relax the body and aid sleep in both adults and children.

Reading Time Reading a quiet book with a child before bed is a great way to help establish that quiet time and sleep go hand in hand. Your voice is a comforting sound, and when lowered will calm and soothe a child.

Reduce External Stimulus Avoid TV and bright lights because too much stimulation can lead to difficulties falling asleep. There are often pre-conceived ideas that there is a one size fits all approach when addressing sleep issues; this is truly not the case. Remember that this is a common issue amongst toddler and you are not alone. If trying the above techniques are not helping why not call on a professional? They will work with you to set you on the track to guaranteed sleep, for your bub, toddler and yourself! Some things which your sleep consultant may trial includes:

• Pick up and put back down: this is about comforting but still making sure the toddler falls asleep without the aid of a parent. • Controlled crying: this is where you allow your child to cry for one or two minutes, and then gradually increase the intervals between crying and checking until she/ he falls asleep. • Gradual retreat: or also known as the gradual withdrawal, gives your toddler time to adjust to falling asleep alone. Simply start by sitting by the cot or bed until your toddler falls asleep, and then after three nights move a little further away, and so on until your child is able to fall asleep without you in the room. • Resetting the body clock and making sure naps are before 3pm as this can interfere with a full night’s sleep.

Katie Forsythe is the owner of The Baby Sleep Company. Their qualified sleep consultants will help you overcome your child's sleep issues in a way that fits with your family.

PLAYGROUP:

Evolving for over 40 years

Playgroup Queensland has been providing families with Playgroup services with the help of Playgroup Contact Persons (dedicated volunteers who organise the Playgroups, assist new members and provide members with support) for over 40 years. In that time, Playgroups have evolved and more grandparents, fathers and carers are attending Playgroup.

TODDLERS AND CHILDCARE

Playgroups are play orientated sessions for children aged 0 – 5 years and are held in halls, churches, parks and in homes. A Playgroup session generally runs for one to two hours and are scheduled at a time for children to engage in quality play with their parent or carer. Activities can include craft, outdoor play, singing and reading books. Playgroups also provide parents and carers with the opportunity to meet other local families and create lifelong friendships.

What do you find challenging as a Playgroup Contact Person? Our Playgroup runs every morning during the work week from 9:30am to 11:30am and I found that managing and communicating with each group can sometimes be a bit tricky. How do you overcome these challenges?

Meet Thashni – Playgroup Contact Person for the Good News Community Playgroup Thashni is the Contact Person for a Playgroup that runs 5 days a week at Jamboree Heights. Thashni attends the Playgroup every Wednesday with her son. Why did you join Playgroup? My husband is Australian and I am South African and we met in London and moved to Australia when I was heavily pregnant with our daughter. We settled in a new area and even though I saw other mothers around with babies, I didn’t have many mum friends. So I started looking for Playgroups within our area and I was lucky enough to find a local one. What do you enjoy most about your Playgroup? I love the set routine of it. My son and I look forward to catching up with our friends each week. He loves talking about his friends at Playgroup and I can see the improvement in his

18

social skills. The parents that attend are able to share funny parenting stories with people that fully understand and we can give and receive advice in a friendly environment. We also share information on kid friendly events happening in and around our areas. Mostly though, I get to be with my son and watch him grow socially, learning to share and learning to think of others. What motivated you to take on the role as a Playgroup Contact Person? The position became available in April and I took the opportunity as I wanted to give back to my Playgroup. I have made so many lovely friends and I love feeling like a part of our community. What do you enjoy most about being a Playgroup Contact Person? I love that I get to meet so many new parents and carers. I love working together on projects and I enjoy the sense of “giving back”.

Your Local Families Magazine – Brisbane Issue 6 - October/November 2014

To improve communication between all five Playgroup sessions, I created a Facebook page to share news and ideas. I attend the Wednesday session and have made it a point of not dealing with Playgroups matters during the session, allowing myself quality time to spend with my son and our friends. I’m happy to deal with any matters that come up before or after the session, which helps me enjoy my Playgroup time. Have you created friendships within the group that now see you socialising on nonPlaygroup days? Yes, definitely. I feel that I have been blessed to somehow have a set of people in my Playgroup that are not judgemental at all – we are a relaxed group of parents and carers. Initially when I started Playgroup, I had no friends in Australia and now I have a network of parent friends. Has being a Playgroup Contact Person assisted in developing work skills? Most definitely. I am currently a Stay at Home Mum and have been for a few years. I found that some of the skills that I utilised in the workforce have waned because I am around little ones all day. Now that I am a Contact Person I am arranging meetings, managing the processes around our Playgroup and I have been involved in marketing, finances – just to name a few! I find that the skills that I thought that I had lost are all still there and now being utilised and strengthened!

What do you think the benefits are for Dad’s to join a Playgroup?

Tell us a little about your first Playgroup experience?

It's a great way to share parenting ideas and get tips.

The first visit was a bit daunting being a bloke - but the mothers were all very friendly and welcoming. My daughter loved it straight away so there were no thoughts about not coming back. When I came back to Playgroup with both my children another father joined, so it was nice to have another Dad in the group.

What are your children’s favourite activities at Playgroup?

Meet Mark – Playgroup Attendee at

Zillmere Monday Munchkins Playgroup

Mark has been attending the Monday Munchkins Playgroup for over 18 months with his daughter Chloe and son Luke.

I have found it enjoyable for all of us to attend. The children really enjoy playing with the other kids and I have found it to be a great way to entertain both children at the same time. It can be hard to find an activity that suits both a 3.5 and a 19 month old, but there is so much variety at Playgroup that both kids are entertained. What is the best thing about being a part of Playgroup? Watching the kids interact with each other, enjoying new activities, learning and having a great time.

Do you think there are any misconceptions about dads at Playgroup that would deter them from joining? No, I was more than welcomed into our Playgroup. It was just not a common thing in the past for Dads to do. With more Dads spending more time at home with the kids, hopefully there will be more and more fathers attending. What do you think would encourage more Dads to come along to Playgroup? More blokes to talk to! What would you tell other Dads who are thinking about bringing their children to a Playgroup? Do it - it's great to see the kids learning and growing in a fun and relaxed environment. And the morning tea is always good!

Why did you join Playgroup? I'm a stay at home dad on a Monday, and I thought it would be a great way to do something fun and educational with the kids while spending time with them. It's also a great way to entertain both my 3.5 year old and my 19 month old at the same time. How did you find out about Playgroup? My wife had friends attending a local Playgroup, so I went along to check it out. I wanted to ensure I spent my Monday’s with

ASYNCHRONY in Childcare

W

e all have relative strengths and weaknesses – some things we can do better than others. Children who are developmentally advanced (in comparison with chronological peers) may have other areas of development that are not so advanced. This unevenness of development in gifted children is referred to as asynchrony. Linda Silverman, a psychologist and author, writes “there are children who progress through the intellectual milestones at a more rapid rate than their peers. The brighter they are, the more uneven their development is likely to be – intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.”

however a child with less ability to regulate emotions (often triggered by sensitivity) can exhibit behaviour that is perceived by adults as emotional immaturity. Heightened intellectual abilities, advanced knowledge and different interests are some of the reasons why gifted children tend to

Gifted children tend to be perceptive, sensitive and mature in their thinking

20

Asynchrony means being out-of-synch. The term is used to refer to the discrepancy between different levels of development within a single child as well as the discrepancies that often exist between a gifted child and chronological peers. Although asynchrony occurs throughout life, it is noticeable in young gifted children who exhibit variation in different areas of development. This is most obvious when a young gifted child’s advanced intellectual skills are compared with their physical development. A child may be able to think, question and discuss issues at an advanced level but not yet be toilet-trained, able to dress themselves or use scissors. Children may be early readers but fine-motor coordination may not yet be developed sufficiently to draw with crayons or write.

gravitate towards playing with older children and want to form friendships outside of chronological peer groups. Nancy Robinson, from the University of Washington, describes the social difficulties that such asynchrony creates: “The younger the children are, the more circumscribed is their social radius and the less likely they are to encounter truly compatible friends.”

Gifted children tend to be perceptive, sensitive and mature in their thinking;

Asynchrony can be accommodated within flexible families but in childcare

facilities, especially those where children are placed in groups based upon chronological age or specific developmental milestones; the asynchronous gifted child presents a dilemma for staff because the child doesn’t fit within a certain age group or stage of development. The gifted child may be ready to play with more advanced toys and need to relate to older children but the staff to child ratio in the older children’s section may not allow for placement of a younger gifted child who is not yet toilet-trained, requires assistance with dressing and/or still experiences difficulties with emotional regulation. Just as a standard school curriculum and class arrangements do not necessarily fit the academic needs of older gifted children, regular childcare structures and provisions may not provide a good fit for the asynchronous gifted child.

Education There are several factors that facilitate appropriate provision for children with asynchronous development in childcare settings. These are: awareness; communication; understanding; expectations; a strength-based focus and flexibility. These apply as much to parents as they do to family daycare providers, the directors and staff of childcare facilities. Awareness about giftedness and the issue of asynchrony will help all those involved with gifted children to understand that uneven development is the norm for these children. Communication between parents and childcare directors is essential to clarify the range of developmental levels and needs of the child. Parents often normalise a child’s behaviour as they may have not basis of comparison so it may be useful to use a questionnaire or checklist to have clear, factual information about the child prior to the child starting childcare. Developing an understanding about different perspectives and expectations can be helpful in structuring provisions for

the child. Parents need to understand that there are guidelines for appropriate levels of care and statutory requirements regarding staffing arrangements and childcare provisions. Childcare staff should listen to parents’ concerns and try to understand more about the individual child’s development, asynchrony and associated needs. Patterns of activity and sleep need to be discussed and consideration given to how energetic children who need more, less or no sleep through the day might be accommodated within the normal structure of the day at childcare.

It is important to focus upon the child’s strengths and provide opportunities for the child to be appropriately intellectually stimulated and socially engaged while at childcare. This may require a child to be placed with an older age group even if the child’s asynchrony means that not all developmental milestones expected for placement within that group have been achieved. Access to toys, equipment, books and activities that will stimulate a child may require some restructuring – even if it is for part of the day. Flexibility of provisions, structures and as a personal characteristic of staff is the most important factor in providing for asynchronous development in gifted children who attend childcare.

Innovative Early Learning: The Reggio Emilia Approach

You’re of to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So… get on your way! Dr Suess

W

hen parents start to explore early education options for their toddler, they are confronted with a huge range of choices. Starting school can mean less parent involvement in day to day learning and more teacher structure – less play more work.

Learning Through Relationships

The teacher is not viewed as the “giver” of knowledge but rather as a mentor and guide. Teachers observe, listen to their questions and stories, find out what interests them and then provide them with opportunities to explore further. That is, children’s thinking, understandings and relationships with others are highly valued and form the impetus for much of the learning that takes place. Rather than teachers following a predetermined curriculum, children’s individual or group interests and ideas form the basis of the learning projects that occur in the classrooms. Projects are ‘child initiated and teacher framed’.

Reggio Emilia posits that children form an understanding of themselves and their place in the world through their interactions with others. There is a strong focus on social collaboration; working in groups, where each child is an equal participant; and having their thoughts, ideas and questions valued. The children search out knowledge through their own investigations and explorations. Children are encouraged to use language to investigate and explore, and to reflect on their experiences. Respect is a large component and strongly valued: children are listened to, acknowledged for their thoughts and ideas and seen as a contributor to the process of learning.

For example, one teacher recently read a story depicting a full moon on the last page and this prompted a child to comment, “But I see different moons!” The same child drew a picture of a crescent moon on the whiteboard to illustrate his point and an ensuing group discussion prompted the question, “Why does the moon change?” What followed was an investigation by the children about the phases of the moon. The children observed the moon at home with their families, watched You Tube footage in the Early Learning Centre and conducted experiments set up by teachers to further develop their own understandings and prior knowledge about the phases of the moon.

One north Brisbane school’s early learning program is changing those traditional perceptions by taking an innovative and different approach. The St Paul’s School Early Learning Centre’s Pre-Prep program has been inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach which is based on the belief that parents, teachers and children are equal stakeholders in the learning journey. Reggio Emilia is an innovative program where the child is at the very centre of their learning. It values the child as strong, capable and resilient - rich with wonder and knowledge. It’s based on the belief that each child brings with them deep curiosity and potential that drives their interest to understand the world around them.

Child-initiated, Teacher-Framed Learning

Your Local Families Magazine – Brisbane Issue 6 - October/November 2014

Education open ended learning spaces, where the children are tempted to discover and create and can self-select from a range of both natural and man-made resources. Materials set out for children both provoke new ideas and play, as well as build on children’s current interests. Both indoor and outdoor play areas allow children to explore and discover. Foundational literacy and numeracy concepts are embedded in the environment and there are always messy, busy spaces as well as couches and homely spaces where children can enjoy quiet time. This enables a great start to schooling where children can make a smooth and connected transition from home to school. For more information www.stpauls.qld.edu.au Marianne Connolly is the Head of Junior School at St Paul’s School, a K-12 co-educational private Anglican school based in north Brisbane. She holds over 27 years experience in both teaching and overseeing school curriculum. Marianne visited Reggio Emilia in Italy in April this year to take part in first-hand training in this innovative learning philosophy. She heads the Brisbane North Reggio Emilia network which trains teaching professionals in the Reggio philosophy.

Tips for Introducing

Reggio Emilia in the Home When children and/or their families initiate projects, they become deeply involved in what is happening in the classroom. This approach awakens their confidence, interest and self-esteem. At any one time, numerous projects can be occurring in the Early Learning Centre, involving small and large groups or individuals. Other key projects have included everything from setting up an outdoor farm, an investigation into how the dinosaurs may have died, a Sushi Train restaurant and a puppet making project.

Environment as “Third Teacher” Of great importance in a Reggio Emilia inspired program, is the learning environment, including the way spaces are organised, light and overall aesthetics. Along with the teacher and parent, the environment serves as a “third teacher”. Great value is placed on the provision of warm, family friendly, provocative and

• Discuss something your child is interested in (eg. dinosaurs, ballet, Japan). Ask them open questions about this subject. Try not to give answers. Instead, ask what they think. Get them to pose theories and answers. • Ask your child to draw plans or ideas on this subject. Create a book of ideas, encourage curious questions and interesting observations. • Take them on excursions. Go to the library to research ideas with your child, or the science centre, park or art gallery. Document their interests and ideas by taking photos and making a book, if you like. • Create a stimulating environment. Create learning spaces in your home based on their interests which your child can help themselves to eg. home corner, dress ups, teepee/cubbyhouse, play dough/craft table, lego building etc
