Contents 4-5 It’s school holidays again and I still don’t have any idea what I’m doing! Seriously people-- is anyone on top of this child rearing business? I have an arts degree and I’m not even nailing ‘craft with kids’-- it’s like they aren’t even focussed on the outcome and just want to enjoy the process. Yuk-- those projects will never turn a profit on Etsy. This time I’ve finally accepted that I won’t be able to work from home and enrich their little lives between phone calls so I’m signing them up for vacation care! This will be augmented with weekend activities where we do an ‘event’ on the Saturday and then spend Sunday peacefully playing on our device of choice. My heart goes out to the child care workers who will spend the next year picking glitter off themselves after one afternoon of supervised craft-- you are my heroes. This issue we create an exciting list of attractions and events you can schedule optimistically into the calendar and tick off with varying levels of personal satisfaction. There is literally no way you can carry the amount of snacks you need to spend a day out with your kids so I recommend hiring an urban Sherpa to assist you on this mission. Please report back via Facebook with a carefully curated photoshoot of the fleeting moments of joy and exuberance you experienced between meltdowns! I need to believe some us know what we are doing.

GIRLS CHALLENGE STEREOTYPES Stuartholme School is challenging the stereotype that boys are better suited to maths and science, with a program designed to develop the skills of girls in the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. The STEAM or STEM acronym is used to describe the curriculum choices of a school with the aim of improving competitiveness in science and technology development and especially promoting these subjects for young women. Over the Easter school holidays, Stuartholme, in conjunction with Clearing Skies, ran the first of two STEAM Residential Programs for 2016. Gifted girls currently in Years 5 and 6 came to Stuartholme from all over Queensland to take part in the three-day Residential Program.

Over the three days, students took part in a number of hands-on workshops depending on their particular strength or interest. In the technology workshops, girls looked at coding and learnt how to design, construct and program various projects. In engineering, students looked at how machines work and the actions of force and motion through gears, levers, wheels and pulleys. They then tested some variables in what makes cars go fast or slow. The STEAM program is an extension of Stuartholme’s educational philosophy which is designed to extend and enrich every student so she can be the best she can be.

5 Tips for getting the most out of a school open day

‘Tis the season of school Open Days so we’ve asked one of our favourite schools, Cannon Hill Anglican College, to help us understand what we should be looking for during any schools Open Day! Open Days present the perfect opportunity to research a school beyond its static promotional materials. On Open Days, investigations become multi-dimensional, tactile and ‘real’. How can you make the most of your visit to the school? Here are five important things to consider when attending an Open Day. Principal’s Address

Get the Facts

The Principal’s Address will present the essence of the school; its overarching philosophy and priorities, both now and into the future. This is an important prelude to your tour of the campus and provides an informed filter through which to analyse your experiences. It sets the tone for the Open Day. Do you align with the values outlined by the Principal and portrayed by student presentations?

An Open Day presents the rare opportunity to meet many members of the school community in a short space of time. It also presents the opportunity to see for yourself, to get the facts firsthand so that you can correctly evaluate wellmeaning, hearsay advice from friends and neighbours. In my role as Registrar, I hear some surprising ‘facts’ about the school. There is one sure way to learn the truth and that is to see for yourself, and to measure the school against your own yardstick.

Talk to Current Students Following the Principal’s Address, take the time to chat with students. Does the school trust the students to be their spokespeople – to lead tours, answer questions and demonstrate leadership? There is no better way to gauge the culture of the school, because children and young people are honest, direct and open. Consider if they are confident and proud, and comfortable in their surroundings, among their peers and other members of the school community. Are they enthusiastic about their learning, inspired by the range of opportunities available to them, confident in taking risks and resilient in a rapidly-changing world? How do they connect with, and demonstrate care to their school, local and global communities?

Is the School Progressive in its Teaching? The school may impress you on the day, but it is important to seek evidence of a long-term vision; of a teaching and learning culture that focusses not only on today’s education but also on future practices. Are classrooms and programs designed around current and future teaching trends? The Prep students of 2016 will graduate in 2028. Will the school’s teaching and learning practices prepare young people to thrive in an unknown future, to be confident innovators and thought-leaders in careers yet to be conceived?

The ‘Feel’ of the School is Most Important One of the most pleasing aspects of an Open Day visit is experiencing how the school feels, as the onsite visit engages all the senses. Trust your instincts, many is the time that a family has walked onto a school campus and known, just by the feel and ambience, that they have found the right place. Each family, however, will be different and have an individual set of requirements in their search for the perfect fit. There can be no better reason to ‘do a Mary Poppins’ and walk into the images on the website and in advertising and the prospectus, than visiting an Open Day, to see the real thing for yourself. With good research and a successful Open Day visit, you will embrace your new family – your chosen school – well into the future. Education

Stimulation by Stealth Wondering what it is? You are already doing it! The concept of ‘stealth health’ gained traction when David Katz, Debra Gordon and Evelyn Tribole wrote books about subtly changing daily habits to promote incremental benefits to one’s physical health. Adding a handful of blueberries (containing antioxidants) to cereal or parking further away from shops so everyone has to walk further, are examples of stealth health adjustments that gradually have a significant impact upon one’s health. With acknowledgement to these authors for introducing ‘stealth health’, I think this concept can be extended by introducing patterns of parenting that will stimulate children’s minds without them being aware of the learning that is taking place. You are probably intuitively doing this already, helping your children to learn more during regular activities. By enriching children’s daily experiences and creating enhanced learning opportunities, parents provide valuable stimulation that children need to establish and strengthen neural pathways, develop intelligence and realise their potential.

The importance of words – yours and your child’s Language builds the brain’s capacity for thought. As children develop language, this increases the child’s ability to think, analyse information, synthesise ideas and create. Steven Stahl, psychiatrist and chairman of the Neuroscience Education Institute at the University of California said, “We use words to think; the more words we know, the finer is our understanding of the world.” Providing early exposure to advanced and nuanced language with accurate grammatical structure enables earlier and more advanced, sophisticated levels of thinking. Children increase cognitive capacity by learning a second language, with working memory, abstract thinking and mental flexibility enhanced. Parents are able to build children’s language skills through regular family activities such as reading, discussion, debate, word play, humour, language based activities and games.

Your Local Families Magazine June/July 2016

The importance of books – yours and your child’s Exposure to books and reading is of enormous benefit to children as the early development of literacy skills is correlated with completion of higher education. Children are strongly influenced by modelling so it is important for them to see adults reading regularly and to be read to by adults, even when the child has developed the capacity to read independently. When adults read to children, the tendency to read books that are beyond the child’s current reading ability exposes the child to advanced language, longer, more complex material and creates a positive emotional connection to good literature. Rosalind Walsh, from the Institute of Early Childhood at Macquarie University, found through her research, that questions related to children’s books, when structured to prompt higher order thinking skills, elicited more thoughtful, advanced responses from young children. Books that require a child to attend to details, search for and discriminate patterns, are useful precursors to the child establishing reading skills. An early interest in books, letters and words, accompanied by an ability to memorise well, frequently results in young children with high intellectual ability being able to read at an earlier age than other children.

The importance of numbers and the toilet door Early development of numerical and spatial abilities establishes a connection between different, discrete areas of the brain, with rapid exchange of information across both hemispheres, according to neuroscientist, John Geake. Many parents introduce small children to counting as they learn to walk upstairs. Incorporating mathematical calculations such as: addition, subtraction, division, fractions and multiplication, within tasks such as cooking and gardening, will help to develop a range of mathematical skills.

Day Trips provide so many opportunities to learn by ‘stealth’...

perseverance and regular practise. Children who participate in sport experience psychological benefits associated with activity, while increasing coordination, agility, strength and physical endurance. Participation in sports and learning music teaches children an important life lesson: effort equals results. Stimulation by stealth can be implemented during travel. Short periods of travel provide opportunities for establishing daily patterns: learning spelling; testing memorization of tables; conducting quizzes; retelling stories to establish recall and develop oral fluency. Day trips provides an opportunity to play word games and may include activities that develop a range of cognitive skills. (Pull quote please) The Minister’s Cat - where each family member ascribes an adjective (in alphabetical order) to describe a fictitious cat – helps to develop attention, auditory skills, working memory and vocabulary, during travel.

So many ways to stimulate

Such exposure also builds their child’s self-confidence about mathematical abilities. Using language related to spatial concepts (under, over, beneath, above, etc.) helps to establish early spatial awareness. Play, using puzzles, blocks, cardboard boxes and construction materials, consolidates a child’s spatial abilities. Memorisation of multiplication tables (considered boring or unnecessary by many high ability children), eases cognitive load and enables high-ability students to think about more challenging mathematical processes. Stealth approaches to assist children to memorise multiplication tables include: placing a chart of tables on the back of the toilet door; encouraging children to identify patterns within lists of tables; practising chanting tables while dancing to music.

The importance of music, sport and travel Early exposure to good quality music helps develop an understanding of rhythm, and an appreciation of music. When children learn to play a musical instrument, they experience an improvement in skills that comes about through

Exploring family photo albums allows adults to give information about family members, introduce genealogy, provide historical and geographical context, and prompting further investigation, including asking family members questions and recording oral family history. To develop fine motor coordination, children might use colouring-in books, build and paint models, trace images or find pathways through maze puzzles. Identifying activities that are enjoyable, challenging or relaxing for children, while simultaneously building specific skills, allows adults to stimulate by stealth, creating a learning environment that increases the child’s capacities, without awareness that these skills are being explicitly developed. © Michele Juratowitch Michele Juratowitch is Director of Clearing Skies, providing: counselling; advocacy in schools; a range of seminars for gifted students and for parents; professional development and consultancy in schools. Parenting

5 TH I N G S

you need to know ABOUT HIRING A N A NN Y

Parents, particularly first-timers, can find it difficult when they reach the need to return to the lifestyle they enjoyed before the birth of the cherished addition/s to the family. Part of that difficulty involves making arrangements for their children when they decided to return to work. While some will take the regulated child care centre path, others will find it more appropriate and preferable to hire a qualified care worker to look after their children in their own homes. The nanny option can be more inviting because it provides the young ones with a familiar and stable environment, and allows them to build a trust with the person who is caring for them while their mum and/or dad are at work. Parents often find a nanny a better option because it allows them more control in appointing the person they are going to trust with their little ones, and more flexibility to fit in with family and work routines. A nanny can be hired to attend the home when required, or be provided with accommodation as a live-in support, as is so often the case overseas. They can undertake basic babysitting/child minding duties, help with homework and chores, or provide transport to get the children to, or collect them from, appointments and school.

10

Your Local Families Magazine June/July 2016

But once you have done the interviews and selected the nanny you feel most comfortable with, a new difficulty arises in establishing a working relationship that is good for both the family and the care worker. When families hire a nanny, they can find themselves navigating a whole new world with unspoken rules, expectations and dynamics. But with just a little bit of thought and understanding from both sides, it won’t be long before parents and their nanny will fall into a healthy working relationship that benefits the parents, the care worker and, most importantly, the children. So what are the most important things to remember when working with a nanny for the first time? Here are some useful tips.

Try not to be jealous

It’s easy to feel a twinge of jealously of the nanny when you leave your child behind. Try not to, because you will always be mum or dad, no matter how often they spend with their carer. If possible, try to visit home during working hours in the early days, and taper off as everyone gets used to their new situation.

Two “mums” in the home

Some mothers worry when their child calls the nanny “mum” but this is a good sign. It shows your child is bonding with the nanny. A professional nanny will use these occasions to gently correct the child, start talking about you as “mum” and help them understand the two relationships.

Parenting F R O M O U R E A R LY E D U C AT I O N E X P E R T A N D C O LU M N I S T

LOUISE CARLILE

Getting Ready for Prep The first five years of a child’s life are critical to their development. They learn more proportionately in this time than any other time in their life. This is the foundation period that shapes the child’s future health, happiness, growth, development, learning achievement including structured learning (school), learning for family and community life and future life in general.

Avoid familiarisation with Nanny The longer a nanny works for you, the greater the temptation to start treating her or him as a part of the family. They are not! It is not necessary to rotate nannies on a yearly basis, but always remember your relationship is professional and not personal. A good nanny will put professionalism above any intimacy.

Hire a cleaner if you need one Most nannies will cook, clean and do laundry for your child but this does not make them the family cook or cleaner. There is a clear line between a housekeeper and a nanny. Remember the duties you assign your nanny should always be child-related.

Communicate

Talk about issues. Be open with your nanny about what you expect from them, and let them be open about what they expect from you. Talk about holidays, and whether you are going to need a nanny when you are on leave, or after hours, and make arrangements to cover sick days. A professional carer helping you with your family can be a wonderful experience. With the right approach to recruitment, employment and communication, a nanny will be a welcome addition to your family. To find a perfect Nanny for your family contact Charlton Brown: www.charltonbrown.com.au

Early experiences provide the basis for the brain’s organisational development and functioning throughout life. They have a direct impact on how children develop learning skills as well as social and emotional abilities. Play is paramount to a child developing across all areas of him / herself. While there is mixed opinion on how a child receives the ‘play’…in a structured and planned curriculum or purely lead by their own creativity and experimentation there is no argument that play is essential for early learning. A holistic approach where the child is engaged in a diverse and stimulating range of activities addressing physical, social, intellectual and emotional facets of development is fundamental. Furthermore, the relationship you have with your child shapes the way they learn and grow. One of my favourite quotes is a most appropriate summary… there is no more important a time in your child’s life than the first six years, no more important a place than the home, and no more significant a person than you.

Party Time

ACTIVE BIRTHDAY PARTIES ROCK A birthday party can be a mountain of fun for the kids – and a mountain of work for the parents! Combined with the expected sugar high from eating all those sweets, you could end up with total birthday party meltdown!

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

That’s why active birthday parties are a great option for kids on the go. Not only are the kids engaged in having a ton of fun, learning a new skill, and working off all that excess energy, but if you book into a party venue that caters for active parties, you can rest assured that competent and skilled staff will ensure that your birthday party runs like clockwork! And all you’re left with is time to relax and enjoy seeing smiles on happy faces. If that hasn’t convinced you yet, read on for 5 reasons active birthday parties rock!

KIDS GET TO PLAY AND SHOW OFF A child’s job is to play. They love to be active. And they love to show off a new skill. Combine that with the fun of a birthday party, and you have a winning recipe. With physical activities such as circus for example, you are ensured that the kids will leave having learnt new skills and realised the importance of teamwork!

ACTIVE PARTIES OFFER A GUIDED EXPERIENCE WITH SKILLED INSTRUCTORS Whether it’s circus, laser tag, ice-skating or go carting, active birthday parties are often led by skilled, trained instructors who have the children’s safety and security at heart. Children are naturally curious, interested in exploring and interacting with their environments. By providing all the tools, equipment and staff, active parties allow kids to explore in a safe, stimulating environment. While parents get to take all the credit for organising such a fun birthday activity!

ACTIVE PARTIES ALLOW FOR PLAY, PLAY AND MORE PLAY! In contrast to passive party entertainment such as going to watch a movie or playing Xbox, active parties allow children to do what they do best – play! There are so many benefits to encouraging creativity through play such as developing their imagination, physical strength and cognitive ability. Plus you’re helping to build active, healthy little bodies.

4. ACTIVITY ENCOURAGE HAPPINESS Physical activity is great for helping children to feel happy in all areas of their life. Active children are more likely to be confident, happy, relaxed and sleep well at night. They are also better able to concentrate at school and get along with their friends and peers. And who knows – by offering this as part of your birthday party, you could inspire an otherwise inactive kid to get active once again!

5. ACTIVE PARTIES ARE ORIGINAL! How often will kids get to hang upside down on a trapeze or hurtle around a go-carting course! Active parties offer that once-in-a-year opportunity to expose children to a completely new activity and skill – and one that will be remembered! Hopefully, these experiences will stick with them and encourage children (and even their parents) to take up a longer-term class and build up their skills even further! 3 Simple No Sew Fancy Dress For Kids BAG OF JELLYBEANS

NINJA TURTLE What you need:

LEGO

What you need:

• Hit up your favourite department store for a huge clear bag - the good folk at the layby section or the back docks should be able to sort you out.

• Tin foil BBQ tray

• Large cardboard box (big enough for your child to fit in) and second smaller box for hat piece (optional)

• Balloons

What you need:

• Green poster paint and paint brush or sponge • Craft glue • Wide clear tape

• Ribbon

• Approx 2.5 metres of fabric or ribbon in orange, blue, purple or red

What you do: • Cut off any excess from the top of the bag (leave the sealed ‘bottom’ of the bag sealed for now). Ideally the bag should be around the same height - or a bit less - than your child. Laying the bag on a flat surface, cut two leg holes (big enough for their thighs but not big enough to let a balloon escape). Then cut two arm holes - about 30cm down from top of bag on the sides. • Blow up balloons about halfway to their capacity (too taut and they will pop very easily). • Once your child has stepped into the leg holes, start filling up the bag with balloons (not too many, if you leave some space they can wiggle the balloons out of the way when they need to sit down) • Pop their arms through the holes, gather up the excess bag over one shoulder and tie on the ribbon.

• Poster paint in your favourite LEGO colour, and paint brush or sponge

What you do:

• Sturdy plastic cups in the same colour

• Paint the BBQ trays and set aside to dry.

• Scissors or Stanley knife

• Cut ribbon or fabric into three lengths. You will need a piece long enough to go across the middle of the shorter width of the tray. Another piece to stick to the inside of the tray and long enough to wrap around your child’s tummy to tie at the front, and anything leftover can be used to tie around their head (with holes cut in for eyes, or as a headband)

• Clear tape

• Tape the waist ribbon across the middle of the inside of the tray, with even lengths leftover on either side to attach the tray to your child’s back by wrapping around their tummy to tie up at the front. • Glue the piece of ribbon across the outside of the BBQ Tray ‘Shell’. Wrap any excess around and tape to the inside of the tray. • Allow to dry completely, then get your pizza ready you’re about to be ‘Cowabunga’d!’

What you do: • Use clear tape to seal up box. Cut out head hole, arm holes and enough of the bottom of the box so that your child can a) wiggle into box, b) walk! • Cut bottom of hat box, but DO NOT cut away all the board. Leave the cardboard as flaps so that you can push them back up into the box at an angle. This will help hold the box on your child’s head. • Paint the box(es) and allow to dry. • Once paint is dry, trace around the smaller bottom of plastic cup several times in a LEGO design on the box(es). Cut holes slightly bigger than the circles you have drawn, but not as big as the larger open end of cup, this will allow you to wedge the cups into the hole. • From the inside, wedge the cups, bottom side out into holes so that they all stick out the same height. They will jam into place with no need for glue or tape. • Wriggle them into the box, and ... Done *dusts off hands*

Cycling is a healthy outdoor activity that the entire family can enjoy together and has many health benefits which include developing strength, balance and overall fitness, as well as strengthening the heart, lungs, lower-body muscles and bones.

Clontarf to Redcliffe

Mitchelton to Alderley

Rocks Riverside Promenade Jindalee

Brisbane River Loop

The 13km bike ride from Clontarf to Redcliffe begins at the southern tip of the Redcliffe peninsula and travels through a pelican beach, 19th century shipwreck, headland views towards Redcliffe’s town centre. You can begin the bike ride at the pelican park which becomes an attraction at 10am for the daily feed time then continue the path around Clontarf’s bay. The route ends as you go through Settlement Cove, where you can stop for a swim on a hot day. Finish up at Bee Gee’s Way and take a walk through the commemorative walkway that honours Redcliffe’s most famous young residents.

The Rocks Riverside Promenade at Jindalee has a 6km return cycle path starting adjacent to the Centenary Highway Bridge at Amazons Place. The scenic path is surrounded by gumtrees and winds its way through meadows until it meets with the Rocks Riverside Park. Along the way there are plenty of benches and picnic shelters available to stop and take a break, as well as a playground with a flying fox that is sure to be a hit among the kids. Made up of gentle hills and wide paved paths, the bicycle track is suitable for most ages and levels of experience.

Sandgate

Cycling through Sandgate is a relatively easy ride of about 6km return and is suited to most ages and levels of experience. The pathway passes through a number of waterfront picnic spots and playgrounds until it reaches the historical jetty at Shorncliffe. Begin by the Sandgate Swimming Pool on Flinders Parade and follow the cotton tree lined esplanade along Sandgate’s historical seafront stretch. At the base of Shorncliffe’s cliffs you can find the Sandgate Baptist Church which has been around since 1887. Just around the cliff base is a sheltered beach area with grassy dunes which has a playground and picnic shelters to relax in at the end of your journey.

Running for approximately 8km return, the Mitchelton to Alderley bicycle path has a strong rural feel. The pathway travels along Kedron Brook through old farmlands with remnants of machinery, sculptures and historical plaques from an early farming family who once lived in the area. The diverse pathway allows you to travel along a creek through the parklands before you split down a hill and ride through a field of cows and ruins of feed sheds and sculptures made of old farm machinery. The cycling path then bypasses a bat colony and ends at Grinstead Park playground and picnic area.

The Brisbane River Loop is Brisbane’s most well-known ride, stretching between 35 and 40km. It includes cycling paths and on road riding through a range of Brisbane suburbs including South Brisbane, Brisbane City, Milton, Auchenflower, Toowong, St Lucia, Indooroopilly, Chelmer, Graceville, Tennyson, Yeronga, Dutton Park, Highgate Hill and West End. The ride is versatile and there are many variations to the loop. It can be done in either direction however many people begin and end the ride at South Brisbane. Carindale Minnippi Parklands

This bicycle path runs for approximately 9km return through the lush Minnippi Parklands. The track is ideal for younger or less experienced riders and is made up of a wide concrete path that winds through forest areas,

#FamiliesMagFun across meadows and over small wooden bridges. There’s a playground halfway that the kids can stop and play at for a break, or alternatively can be used as a starting point to halve the track distance. The creek running through the Parklands is home to turtles and water birds who quite often come up near the picnic shelters to find food scraps.

the path is quite narrow and especially windy in some places. There is also a few narrow bridges and easy inclines that might prove difficult for less experienced cyclists.

Wynnum to Manly

This bike ride follows Ithaca Creek along a 7km return journey. The path starts at Woolcock Park, Red Hill, and allows you to spot plenty of wildlife amongst the creek bank along the way. While trees shade most of the route, there are a couple of on-road sections among quiet streets. There are a few gentle slopes along the way, and a short while into the track you come across a dirt jump bike circuit where experienced kids can show off their skills.
