Welcome to our Winter Day Trips & Children’s Parties Issue I do not handle winter well at all. In summer I can pretend we are a really earthy, freewheeling family who don’t wear shoes because we want to feel the sand beneath our toes. In winter it becomes obvious we only own one pair of socks which I rotate between three kids. The socks still don’t match. Where are all the track pants I bought last year? I know they aren’t in the school’s ‘Lost and Found’ because at the end of winter last year I raided it for correctly sized pants (probably mine, there is no evidence to the contrary) and they are gone too. We have 18 pairs of too small shorts and three pairs of too large school shorts which I’m holding onto in the hope we’ll fit them before I lose them. This issue we tackle Winter Day’s Out to make sure you get out and about and don’t have to spend spring wiping grubby fingerprints off every wall and door frame. If you have a birthday party coming up, you may also want to check out the Children’s Parties section and work out how much money you can throw at it to find the balance between celebration and peace of mind…

Parenting
NATURE’S CLASSROOM – OUTDOOR LEARNING “GET OUTSIDE KIDS!” We all use this age-old phrase at home with our children as we preach to them about simpler times many years ago in our own Netflix free childhoods where our backyards were our real life Minecraft. A time where we would not even think about being inside the house after school or on the weekends. A time where your parents did not need to call you on your smart phone to return home, you simply knew when the streetlights started to flicker on, it was time to get peddling! But it’s not only at home that kids need to get outside more, it’s also in our schools.
NATURE PLAY IS ESSENTIAL TO A HEALTHY CHILDHOOD. It provides kids unstructured free time to explore the outside world around them. If you give a child a firefighter’s hat, they will be a firefighter. If you give them a slide and a swing, they will slide and swing (and you’ll have to push them!). However, allow them to explore a natural area and the possibilities are endless. Nature play reduces stress in children, can build their resilience though providing a need for them to assess risk in a challenging and unstable environment and the exposure to natural
elements such as dirt, mud and sand helps build their immunity. No two experiences in a nature play area are ever the same and friendships flourish in an environment that requires collaboration and exploration.
GET INTO THE GARDEN Given the opportunity to redevelop our Primary School playground at Clayfield College, we closely monitored our students’ habits during their breaks. Handball and play gear activities entertained the majority of the boys and girls; however, a rebel group were in the gardens collecting seeds, nuts and flowers and making perfumes, potions and lotions. We challenged our teachers to stop saying, ‘Get out of the garden’ and start saying, ‘Get into the garden’. We placed a few fire pits throughout the play areas to see how the students would interact with them and found them at the end of the day full of these loose parts for the next concoctions.
SCHOOLS ARE CREATING ‘NATURE PLAY’ AREAS With mounting research regarding the benefits of nature play and our rebel group in mind, we worked with Solid Ground Landscaping to revamp a tired area of the playground and create our first Nature Play area. The area consists of a dry creek bed, large logs strewn throughout, a variety of wooden stepping-stones, two upcycled planter boxes for a herb garden with several native plants dotted through the area. The centrepiece of the Nature Play area is an old wooden fishing boat purchased for $300. The revamp was a relatively inexpensive project compared to the high cost of play equipment and has instantly become the busiest area of the playground. To come is an outdoor stage, a fairy garden and an unfinished fort to allow for palm fronds and tarpaulins to be repurposed as building materials.
CREATING ‘NATURE PLAY’ AREAS AT HOME Take advantage of the 12 months of great weather we have here in Brisbane and get the kids outside. Take a look at your own garden or school playground and see what the addition of a fire pit to house loose parts would promote or how a few discarded pallets could become an outdoor stage. For those who need some inspiration be sure to check out the Nature Play QLD website https://www.natureplayqld.org.au/ who list Nature Play providers and promote events such as Mud World or keep an eye out for an old boat on going cheap! “Get outside!” Wayne Cross is the Head of Pastoral Care in the Primary School at Clayfield College. He has two daughters Mabel and Lola who spend more time playing in his garden than in the $1200 cubby house he bought them for Christmas! 4 Ways to Raise Kids to be Active, Engaged Citizens
Growing up in a hyper-connected digital age, children are very aware of the global, not just the local. With the world at their fingertips, they can consume information from a plethora of organisations, conversing with individuals from around the world about issues of a global nature. In this environment, it can be easy to lose sight of what it means to be an active member of their local community. In this article you’ll find a few ways that families can embrace opportunities, at school and at home, to connect to their community, work together to reach a common goal, and to see the impact of their actions on those around them.
Teach attention, not just connection Focus on tuning in rather than zoning out. Finding opportunities for true interaction, not just digital connection, is a challenge for students and parents alike. Avoiding the distraction of screens is a choice—one that takes intentionality and practice to master. Without a clear intention, it is very easy for attention to become diverted. However, by establishing solid boundaries with technology we can positively influence levels of attention, productivity and psychological wellbeing. True, face-to-face conversation builds empathy, friendship, love and learning. Like life, conversation has its silences, awkwardness and boring bits. It can be tedious at times, and thoughts and ideas may not always flow smoothly, but it is organic and unedited and we are seen in the moment for the complete people that we are. Whether a family chooses to create device-free ‘sacred spaces’ at home or cultivate daily habits of family conversation, children recognise a commitment to conversation, a commitment to family and a commitment to them. Children are encouraged to share the same commitment with their own friends, peers and adults, and truly see and engage with the people around them.
Become a team player One of the key lessons taught through team sport is how to navigate and develop trusting relationships, as well as gain confidence, collaborate to achieve a common goal, and how to give and receive feedback. At the end of February 2018, research titled The Imagination Gap (2018), was released. As part of the study, researchers surveyed 1000 Australians about their involvement in team sports and, importantly, how these experiences contributed to their success in the workplace and other aspects of life.
True, face-to-face conversation builds empathy, friendship, love and learning. Unfortunately, many girls and young women miss out on the development of key team-building skills because of lower participation rates in team sports and higher drop-out rates. As identified in the report, half quit playing team sport in high school with 16 per cent not even staying involved through primary school. Crucially, according to the report, women recognise this lost opportunity. Two out of three respondents believed playing team sports would have helped them develop further skills, while 46 per cent agreed it would have helped them be more selfconfident and mentally resilient. The research encourages girls to participate in teams to help foster the next generation of leaders; by seeing more women in positions of leadership and influence, our children (both boys and girls) will be able to understand that anyone can become a leader and have real impact in areas from sport, through to politics, business, and in the community. By committing to a school team, students learn to belong to a community, see how their actions and abilities are enhanced by working together with others, and understand the responsibility of their individual contributions; a single person’s actions can influence the result for the whole group.

Education Focus on tuning in rather than zoning out. Finding opportunities for true interaction, not just digital connection...
Tackle inequality—together Although we are often aware of human rights concerns and inequality issues faced by members of our communities, children and adults can feel they are powerless to help others. However, by joining together, groups of people can genuinely assist those most in need. Many schools, including mine, host regular service groups and charity fundraising events throughout the year with opportunities for students and parent involvement. No effort is too small, and even simply attending these events and discussing their impact with your children brings their awareness to issues on their doorstep; with awareness comes understanding, and with understanding comes a call to action. By joining a school-based service group, not only does the wider community benefit from our time, energy, fundraising efforts and involvement, but we also acquire a deeper appreciation of people in need and a positive sense of community.
Find (and raise) your voice In an age when corporations and governments collect data about citizens from social media to calculate ‘reputation scores’ and exert social pressure to be a certain kind of citizen, we need our students to resist the pressure of conformity based on fear and learn to raise their voice in active, considered and inclusive discussion.
Some of the first places that young students learn to question, to converse, and to voice their opinions are the classroom and the kitchen table. Teachers, parents, coaches and friends all play a part in encouraging open dialogue among a variety of perspectives, based on mutual respect and a commitment to honesty and clarity in discussion. For our current generation to be adaptable to the ever-changing global future, collaborative problem solving, digital literacy, intercultural understanding, and critical and creative thinking are paramount, and so are the variables of discomfort, risk, failure and grit. Schools can provide opportunities for students and families to give up the familiarity of the known and embrace their discomfort in order to practise skills that will empower them to be active, engaged members of society. Education What I most want to tell parents is how much I appreciate their daughter, said one St Margaret’s secondary teacher.
What teachers REALLY want to tell parents. Families Magazine wanted to know ‘What do teachers REALLY want to tell parents?’ So, we asked one of our local schools to ask their teachers for us! What follows are practical hints, some do’s and don’ts that will help your son or daughter to both succeed and enjoy their schooling years, and some heartfelt things our teachers want all parents to understand. The first response we want to share, truly conveys what it means to be a teacher and why teachers choose this career, which can be a glorious, frustrating, satisfying, demanding, exhausting but exhilarating vocation.
10
When giving parents feedback, I will mostly give them tangible, practical advice. But I would love every parent of the children I teach to know how much I believe in their daughter as a person.
I want them to know that their child is a great person, and that when we put aside marks, expectations and the pressure of teen years, their teen is doing the best they can and is a beautiful person.
For the most part students hold so much together during the school hours – they can be very together, managed and mature young people; but they still need to go home and have a safe place to lose their bundle.
This teacher stressed that they do always see the best in their students. We really like them as young people and can’t wait to see them succeed in life, and although they don’t need our adoration, I hope my students and their parents know that they have my full support.
St Margaret’s has always emphasised that a good education relies on a three-way partnership and a shared responsibility between the student, teacher and parent, where communication is key. The thing I want most of all from parents is to let me know when their children are struggling – emotionally, academically, whatever – a quick “heads up” even helps to make sure we have the full picture stressed one teacher.
Your Local Families Magazine June / July 2018
In addition to good communication, parents are encouraged to support the school program at home. If the class is learning about history, talk to your child about that topic or take them somewhere on the weekend urged a primary teacher.
Showing an interest at home and helping students to make connections outside of school makes a huge difference to their ability to comprehend. If the class is doing procedure writing, show them recipes and do some cooking with measuring.
Education
Do’s and Don’ts > e ncourage your child to read, read, and read more. Reading opens up so many doors. > let your child fail – it’s part of learning and develops resiliency. It’s hard to watch, but if you let them learn from failure, you will also have the joy of watching them grow smarter from it. Failure can mean students are stretching themselves and their capacity; they need to have the courage to fail in order to learn. As Henry Ford said: “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” > acknowledge the effort your child has put in regardless of the result. Good results will flow from sustained effort and well-directed encouragement. > encourage your child to put the devices away and allocate a specific time to complete homework. Make this time work for her so that she can be really focused and productive. This will minimise stress and ensure she is able to maintain some balance around schoolwork, extracurricular activities and social life. > take an interest in what your children are doing at school. Talk with them about upcoming assessment and due dates and help them plan and organise their time. > teach your child to speak without using the word “like”
> do their assessment > tell them the answers. Teachers work very hard at getting students to think; working something out for themselves is the only way they will learn effectively. > project manage your child. Avoid being the helicopter parent or the lawnmower parent – the one who smooths a path for them, so they never encounter any bumps or challenges along the way (see “do let them fail”) > fight their battles for them. If they don’t do their homework, for example, encourage them to explain to the teacher the reasons why, rather than the parent emailing the teacher. This encourages them to own their learning, understand the consequences of their actions (or lack of ) and accept responsibility for the situation.
The Last Word
> spend more time with your children doing everything.
Teachers would like to remind parents that they are people too!
> put your child’s phone and headphones in the centre console when driving them to school and tell them stories or simply converse.
We have their child’s best interests at heart; we are always in their corner, through the highs and the lows. That’s what teachers do.
> get involved! Schools provide a wealth of opportunities to try new things, perhaps more than at any other time in our life. Encourage your child to maximise their participation in every aspect of school life, which can only lead to personal growth.

BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS FOR 9 – 12 YEAR OLD TWEENS When you are looking for great tween birthday party ideas around Brisbane, you will be spoilt for choice. If you know where to look! Here’s a tip about a tween party… they want you to take them somewhere to have fun, but they don’t want you to have fun with them… as a rule. So, with that in mind these ideas are spot on!
URBAN XTREME HENDRA Located at 4/370 Nudgee Rd in Hendra, Urban Xtreme was opened late 2017 with an indoor ski venue and has quickly developed its range to include laser tag and an indoor trampoline park. They are developing at a rate of knots and have big plans for this venue. We took the chance to stay for 2 hours and use both the laser tag and the trampolines on a Friday afternoon after school.
LASER TAG – XTREME LASER This was truly EPIC!! Featuring a multi-level Laser Tag arena, and the worlds most advanced “Helios” Laser Tag system, Xtreme Laser was dubbed ‘the best part of the birthday party’ by the 10 kids we took to Urban Xtreme! The Xtreme Laser course was so much fun for the kids to run around ‘hiding and seeking’ with their birthday party compadres!
INDOOR TRAMPOLINE PARK – XTREME JUMP We were so lucky to have the trampolines included in our party because the Xtreme Jump Trampoline area is now open and ready for non-stop action. The kids loved bouncing, flipping, playing and soaring on the over 500m2 of interconnected awesomeness! They played dodge ball and other trampoline games with the staff during our visit! The trampolines are suitable for ages from 4 to adult so you should consider this option for ages other than tweens! Find out more here www.urban-xtreme.com.au
FAMILIES TIP: Go on a week day after school – it was SO QUIET but I assume it won’t be forever, so be quick!!
SLEEPOVER FOR TWEENS WITH SLUMBER BOUTIQUE After you take the kids to Urban Xtreme, why not invite them back for a slumber party in their own tents at your house! We asked Slumber Boutique to set up tents for our guest and we were so impressed with their beautiful addition to our party, we had to include them in our write up of tween birthday party ideas! The kids spent a night under one of their beautiful bespoke handmade tents. It’s truly a magical experience for both boys and girls. Their gorgeous tent packages come filled with fairy lights, mattresses, mini tables, lanterns, exquisite handmade bunting and lots more special touches from DIY photo booths, games packages, pamper boxes or craft boxes all tailored especially for your child. They deliver and set up the tents in the comfort of your own home at an agreed time and then collect the following day. Slumber Boutique parties are a fantastic way of offering your child a magical party with a difference, giving them wonderful memories to share with their friends long after the tents have been packed away. Family Friendly Walking Trails Easy Gold Coast Walks & Northern NSW Hikes
What is not to love about carefully choosing a walking stick, copying the bird noises, playing ‘who can spot the…’ and having a packed picnic lunch somewhere you’ve never been before?
If there is something most parents agree on, it’s that they wish their kids spent more time outdoors – you know, away from the iridescent glow of those hypnotising devices. So, what’s the best way to compensate for little legs and littler attention spans? This year, our family made a conscious effort to schedule a day, usually Sunday, to get back to nature and see something new. It’s something I grew up doing, and I have been waiting for my kids to reach that perfect age for their induction to the great outdoors. What is not to love about carefully choosing a walking stick, copying the bird noises, playing ‘who can spot the…’ and having a packed picnic lunch somewhere you’ve never been before? But where on earth do you start, I hear you ask? Guys – we are spoilt for choices! Across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW we have an abundance of landscapes to choose from, and that’s the beauty – the kids will never get sick of your little outings if every hike looks different from the last. Easy Gold Coast walks are everywhere. Dense rainforests, mountain peaks, coastal dunes, waterfalls, mangroves, caves systems, rivers, creeks and rock pools – take your pick! Here’s a quick look at some of the family friendly walks we have at our fingertips:
COUGAL CASCADES TRACK 1.6kms return, Springbrook National Park QLD: An easygoing walk that follows Currumbin Creek through subtropical rainforest and eventually leads to the remnants of an old saw mill. There are plenty of descriptive plaques and swimming opportunities along the way. Read our review here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/family-friendlybushwalking-cougal-cascades

THREE SISTERS WALKING TRACK 1.6kms return, Broken Head Nature Reserve NSW: A beautiful walk just south of Byron Bay through rainforest to the lookout at Kings Beach – a perfect spot to have a picnic and learn a little about the Indigenous stories and heritage of the land.
hWinter Day Trips
FEDERATION WALK 3.5kms, Coastal Reserve, Main Beach QLD: Tucked away amongst the skyscrapers is this unique track, which navigates through coastal dunes, pockets of rainforest and open spaces. Also suitable for bike riding with bigger kids. Read our review here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/federation-walkfamily-friendly-bike-ride
CAVES CIRCUIT 5kms, Lamington National Park QLD: You can avoid a steep climb by driving a little further along the trail and starting at the Binna Burra Lodge. The rainforest walk passes some large red cedars, and apart from the caves it has spectacular views of the Coomera Valley.
PURLING BROOK FALLS CIRCUIT 4kms, Springbrook National Park QLD: A spectacular waterfall, if you can handle the 450 steps down to the bottom of the falls. Best experienced after rainfall. You can go behind the falls, but ensure children are well supervised as it changes direction quickly! www.familiesmagazine.com.au/springbrook-waterfalls-with-kids
TARRABORA RESERVE & BEREE BADALLA BOARDWALK
HERITAGE PARK TRAIL 2kms return, Brunswick Valley Heritage Park, Mullumbimby NSW: This simple walk follows the Brunswick River through a surprisingly unique collection of 326 different plant species, mostly labelled, some of which are endangered.
OCEANVIEW WALK & RAINFOREST CIRCUIT
2.4kms return, Palm Beach QLD: A laidback walk starting at Palm Beach parklands and winding through lowland coastal forest, then exploring the mangroves of Currumbin Creek via the boardwalk. There is also the option to continue to Currumbin Beach.
4.6kms, Burleigh Head National Park QLD: Starting from the southern entrance along the Oceanview Walk you may spot a whale or two through the pandanus. Extend this walk by taking the Link Track to the Rainforest Circuit, returning via the Oceanview Track to cool off in the ocean at Palm Beach.
MINYON FALLS & THE BOGGY CREEK WALK
Read our review here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/burleighheadland-national-park-beach-rainforest-walk
4kms return, Whian Whian State Conservation Area NSW: Starting at the spectacular Minyon Falls Lookout with a drop over 100m, then follow Repentance Creek north to Rummery Park campground for a picnic before returning. Read our review here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/minyon-fallsand-the-boggy-creek-walk-with-kids
PALM GROVE CIRCUIT 2.6kms, Tambourine National Park QLD: An easy going trail which will take you through huge groves of piccabeens and strangler figs. You can extend this walk by joining onto Jenyns Circuit (4.5kms), a slightly more challenging walk but with great views of Jenyn Falls. Read our review here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/things-to-do-mt-tamborine So, there you have it. There is no excuse, put on your hiking boots, grab your bug spray and head on out to the easy Gold Coast walks we have right on our doorstep. Enjoy! The Abbey Medieval Festival The Abbey Medieval Festival is back for its 29th year on July 14-15! Every year, when the planets align a certain way, a time portal opens in Caboolture allowing you to slip back hundreds of years to the Middle Ages. The air rings with clashing of swords, the ground shudders to the thundering of hooves, crowds cheer the clang of lance upon shield… and The Abbey Museum invites you to experience all the sounds, sights and smells of this magical medieval era for yourselves. The Abbey Medieval Festival is an annual Moreton Bay Region highlight, attracting over 30,000 national and international visitors keen for a taste of what life in the Middle Ages was like. Over 1000 enthusiastic re-enactors bring the Dark Ages, Middle Ages and early Renaissance Period to life in an action packed two-day program of family-friendly events. The medieval villages and encampments recreate the life of peasants, campaigning knights, and travellers as they gather around to talk, work, cook and socialise. Craftsmen and women demonstrate their skills using traditional tools, stallholders sell their wares at the medieval market, and there are many exciting displays of athletic skill, strength and endurance to keep every member of the family entertained. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the medieval atmosphere by dressing up, with prizes to be won for the best costume. Dressing up isn’t compulsory – and you’ll see plenty of visitors in their modern fashions –– but if you want to immerse yourself a little deeper into your medieval experience there’s no finer occasion to wear your best medieval outfit!
