BRISBANE FESTIVAL FAMILY HIGHLIGHTS! The Clever Resource for Thinking Parents

August / September 2019

Contents 4

Welcome to our BRISBANE SCHOOLS & EDUCATION Issue! It’s time for organised parents to be thinking about schools/education/futureproofing their ovum, while I and others like me stay up past 8pm to check behind jars in the cupboard for hidden chocolate or escapee snack packs. We are all busy and anxious (just for different reasons)! I want to draw your attention to ‘fake nits’. Fake nits are the nits you get when someone in your circle gets them, and even though you can’t find them you can FEEL THEM MOVING. All it takes is one nit note home and the scratching gets feverish, then I’m begging Baby Daddy to check my hair, which he reluctantly does. Usually, it’s “I see nothing” but it takes two or three more checks before I’m finally satisfied. Then I get a close friend to check again as I don’t trust his nit detection abilities. I recently got a case of ‘SUPER fake nits’. I got Baby Daddy to check and he said “Yep, this time you got ‘em”. I stripped the beds, burnt the hairbrushes and dyed my hair (two birds, one stone) then later that night he said, “you don’t have nits but you are annoying and I wanted you to go away”. Solid stitch up, sir; well played. Alas for him I have an arts degree and special effects make-up so he got a shock when he woke up with a mystery rash across his face. The doctors are stumped! If you want your children gainfully employed and not wasting their tertiary education on a long-running game of payback, best start interviewing schools soon. Yours in the deep deception of long-term relationships,

INDOOR SKYDIVING IN BRISBANE!

Suit up and experience the thrill of skydiving with Brisbane’s first iFLY Indoor Skydiving Centre at Westfield Chermside. The city’s most exciting new attraction simulates the sensation of skydiving in true freefall conditions using iFLY’s very latest vertical wind tunnel (VWT) – no parachutes or planes required! iFLY Australia’s General manager Nir Davidson said iFLY was a safe and exciting experience that welcomed thrill-seekers aged three to 103 years old, as well as people of all physical ability. “This is a completely new experience for the Brisbane market,” Mr Davidson said. “The ability to deliver that dream of flight to everyone – regardless of their age or physical dexterity – is a key vision for us as an organisation.” The specialised technology that drives iFLY also comes under the microscope with the Brisbane centre hosting STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) sessions for schools. “There’s a real buzz within the education sector and iFLY Brisbane has a dedicated education officer who has great experience custom-building STEM programs for primary, middle and senior school students,” Mr Davidson said. iFly participants are supervised throughout the experience by a certified skydiving instructor, led by Brisbane’s Lead Instructor Jarrad Kline who has worked for iFLY across the globe and clocked up thousands of hours in the VWT. Families Magazine staff went along to interview Jarrad and try iFly for themselves. You can read all about it online at www.familiesmagazine.com.au/indoor-skydiving-brisbane

Education GRACE LUTHERAN COLLEGE

Using what I know and can do to serve others. That is the essence of Service-Learning and the heart of what we do at Grace. Service-Learning aims to Expose students to the nature and needs of our communities and our world; Encourage students to recognise the innate value of people and our world, placing emphasis on connecting through relationship; and Empower students to take a stand and seek justice for people and planet through love. Service-Learning at Grace is about using a conceptual lens to look at issues at both a local, national and international level. These issues are looked at from the perspectives of Innate Dignity, Story, Boundary Crossing, Come as Guest, Presence, Community and Stewardship. True Service-Learning is embedded in the curriculum and students empathy dive to unpack and understand the needs and stories of those they are going to serve. It is about the “other” and not about us. Grace is involved in projects at both local, national and international levels. These include: • A partnership with The Lodge, a Youth Support Shelter, where students have created textile items to meet the needs in the home they create for displaced youth. Students and staff participated in a Sleepout and clothing drive to raise awareness of our local & national youth homelessness issue, which raised funds for The Lodge and met practical needs. • World’s Greatest Shave, where students raise funds to shave their head to raise awareness for Leukaemia. • Year 8 Textile students are supporting a local aged care facility through making personalised fiddle quilts for residents with dementia. These students have listened to their stories and understand the innate dignity of each person to then design and create a quilt for each person. Creative Industries have also worked with this facility to create tactile artworks to also assist with their therapy.

• Building Culture, Language and Community. Grace partners with two schools in Indonesia which allows students to cross boundaries in terms of culture, and to step out of their comfort zone to serve our Indonesian friends in further developing their English language skills, and together develop a sense of community. • Service-Learning is evident in many Departments across the school: Design Technology have supported local organisations with the skills they have building picnic tables for a Riding School for the disabled, therapy benches used as an occupational therapy tool, and trailers. The Business Department has students explore a variety of Charities that they wish to support before developing Business Ventures to help support their needs; Food Studies creates freezer meals for our Grace Community, so that these can be used at times when a Grace Family may need some extra support. Please get in touch with any of our Grace Service Learning Staff at either campus to find out more. www.glc.qld.edu.au

Education SOMERVILLE HOUSE

Preparing Students for the Future Workforce With media coverage often focused on job losses to automation, a recent report from Deloitte Access Economics, The Path to Prosperity: Why the Future of Work is Human, looked at how robots and technology is increasingly taking over monotonous, repetitive tasks, resulting in the creation of more interesting jobs for humans. The report states over 80% of jobs created between now and 2030 will be for ‘knowledge workers’, using technology to create meaningful work. It found two-thirds of jobs will rely on ‘soft skills’ such as customer service and health care, with a strong focus on digital literacy. The report also showed that the future of work is female, with interpersonal and creative roles ‘of the heart’ the hardest to mechanise. Principal Mrs Kim Kiepe is encouraged by how the findings validate the academic, social and emotional learning opportunities available at Somerville House. “Our core mission is to educate both mind and heart. We aim to nurture girls’ creativity in a dynamic, supportive and challenging environment,” Mrs Kiepe said. “With Christian values grounded in care and a range of curricular and co-curricular IT based subjects available, we work hard to ensure students graduate with strong digital literacy.” Students learn digital literacy skills from Prep. From Year 3, students are provided with a personal computer and access to a state-of-the-art IT help centre. Technology focused school holiday workshops are offered, including use of Arduino robots to build and program hand-held game consoles. Head of Digital Design and Technology Mr Paul Herring says “The program utilises Spheros, 3D printing, graphic, web and video design. Students learn how to use and code drones, explore Algorithmic Programming, computer animation, and augmented and virtual reality apps.”

Students from Year 10 explore Information Communication and Technology, using the Middle School DDT program to gain appreciation of how technology works. In Years 11 and 12, Information Processing and Technology (IPT) is offered as a complementary service subject. Social and ethical issues are integrated, and students analyse how technological changes impact the way people live. Robotics Club is offered from Years 5 to 11. It’s one of the more popular activities within the School’s Cultural and Community Co-Curricular program. Participation has grown fourfold since 2016, making the Somerville House Robotics Program the largest by number of any girls’ school in Australia in 2018 (according to RoboCup Junior Australia). Robotics consolidates 21st-century skills of algorithmic thinking, creativity, computer programming, problem-solving and teamwork in a fun and supportive environment. Co-ordinator of Coaches for Robotics Club, Ms Margaux Edwards, says Robotics at Somerville House inspired her to study a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in Mechatronics and Robotics. “IPT allowed me to learn basic programming and theory, which helped a lot at university as I can look at a piece of programming or code and understand it,” Margaux said. “My first robot was built with instructions, but to program it myself and have the freedom to build whatever I wanted was amazing.” Mrs Kim Kiepe is confident the School is developing the digital and interpersonal skills students need to make meaningful contributions to the future workforce. For more information on any of the subjects listed or to find out about the many academic and co-curricular opportunities for your daughter at Somerville House, please visit www.somerville.qld.edu.au/enrolments.

Education STUARTHOLME SCHOOL

Empowering students to transform their world Stuartholme School empowers its students to transform their world. The school’s Social Justice Program increases students’ awareness of social justice issues and provides them with opportunities to take action. The school prepares and inspires students to be active, informed and responsible global citizens. This year, the school launched a new social justice initiative centred around the school’s theme for the year of Compassion, Connection and Change. Stuartholme’s Principal, Kristen Sharpe, said the program provides opportunities for every student to be an advocate in supporting the needs of others. “Our program this year has three areas of focus which gives students a strong voice about a topic that is important to them,” Kristen explained. The first topic is environmental sustainability. Stuartholme students are passionate about the need to do more for the environment, acknowledging that even a small change can make a big impact. “130 of the 680 students at Stuartholme are boarders, with the majority of them coming from rural and remote Queensland, so their experiences with environmental issues is often different from that of the day scholars, who have not experienced first-hand the impacts of issues such as drought,” Kristen said. “The students have been able to work together and learn from each other, which has made for an extremely well-rounded education.”

8

Another issue close to the heart for Stuartholme is that of refugees. Stuartholme has a history of working with refugees and this year they aim to strengthen this connection through ongoing support to assist refugees and educate the community about the challenges refugees face in our society. The third focus of our theme is disability. Through our annual Sony Camp, students have a rich history of engaging with and caring for children with disabilities. The students feel very strongly about the need to be actively involved within the disability community to further understand the challenges they face. This extends to everyday injustices in terms of activities, accommodation, resources, employment, education and wellbeing. By focussing on disability, the students have the opportunity to reframe their thinking and language, allowing them to challenge traditional understanding of ability. “The students will examine each of these parts through the lenses of civic advocacy, social enterprise and volunteering. “One of the five Goals of a Sacred Heart education is to educate to a social awareness which impels to action.” Our students are encouraged to seek to understand the causes of social injustice and to explore ways to respond practically and positively. “As educators of young women we want to ensure our students leave Stuartholme as confident, capable, inspired adults who have a passion to make a difference in the world.” Find out how Stuartholme can inspire your daughter by visiting the school for an Action Tour. Students at the Centre

Faith Lutheran College Redlands believes that all teaching and learning should include student voice. Whether in our Primary School at our Link Road, Victoria Point Campus or in our Secondary School on Beveridge Road in Thornlands, you will find students actively involved in all areas of College life. Students from all ages work with their teachers to assist in designing their own rich questions to help construct their individual pathways to learning. This inquiry-based approach has students at the heart and helps to cater for the individual differences that all learners have. College assemblies on both the Primary and Secondary Campuses are student led. Secondary Students actively approach staff to create the agenda each week for assemblies, which they lead from start to finish. An active Student Leadership Program brings student voice to all areas of College life including Service Learning, Worship, Academic and Sporting. Student Councils meet weekly with the members of the College Leadership Team, to organise events and advocate for student issues. Another example of the strong student advocacy sees our Senior Girls at Faith Lutheran College Redlands host a Shine program each week where they mentor younger girls towards having a positive self-image and caring for themselves and others. One of the unique strengths of Lutheran Schools are their Outdoor Education Programs. Faith Lutheran College Redlands provides the opportunity for all students to attend a 4-week program at Mt Binga Outdoor Education Centre near Blackbutt in Queensland, as the pinnacle of their Year 9 program. The Mt. Binga experience sees students take responsibility for themselves. With the assistance of specialist staff

students, cook, wash, bake and even milk the cows. An extensive hiking program is part of the stay. Students learn to work together in community and grow into their emerging adulthood as a strong team, equipping them well for the Senior Secondary years. Faith Lutheran College Redlands gives students from Prep to Year 12 an extensive range of opportunities to find their student voice, to have it valued as they grow and to become active contributors in the community life they share. Education ST JOHN FISHER COLLEGE Let your light shine The spirit of St John Fisher College is the courage to seek justice, the gift of peace and the grace to forgive. Young women of the College are encouraged to stand up, make their mark and let their light shine on issues that are important to them and the wider community. The College encourages its girls to independently advocate a range of causes through fundraising and action for local and international causes, including support for the disadvantaged and those who have suffered domestic violence, collections for St Vinnie’s Appeals, and the Kolega Café which, together with fundraising for Mercy Works, allows us to support our international neighbours in Timor Leste. Last year a Year 8 student received a Diabetes Ambassador award, and a Year 10 student sat on the Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council with strong, viable ideas for improving our city.

Go Far. See More. Reach Further We encourage girls to think outside the square, challenge theories and dare to dream. Senior students who believe in a communal space for everyone launched a Fun, Food & Fellowship program, while others believing everyone has the right to a quality education are setting up a Bursary Fund for disadvantaged students.

Harmony Matters With a diverse and talented student body it is our pleasure to showcase their many gifts and talents through various cultural performance groups. Harmony Day is always a colourful display at the College, and it’s important to the girls to celebrate intercultural diversity all year round. Visit www.stjohnfishercollege.qld.edu.au

Education SHELDON COLLEGE The first five years of a child’s life are crucial for development. In fact, it’s during this time that 90% of their brain develops. Brain development is “activity-dependent,” meaning the more sensory, motor, emotional, and cognitive experiences that children are exposed to, the greater the connections. The early years, including Preparatory, at Sheldon College differentiate the curriculum via hands-on activities that support inquiry-based learning. The advantage our College offers is that our multi-sensory approach to learning takes place within contexts with three key differences. Due to the College’s value system, we provide a truly safe, orderly learning environment which enables the achievement potential of all individuals to be maximised, with experiences being planned collaboratively by experts in specialist curriculum fields. Furthermore, all experiences for our younger students are planned with clearly defined student exit outcomes in mind. These high-quality contexts, combined with experiences skilfully targeted to specific stages of development, better support the brain development that is crucial in building the foundations for quality learning in later life. The Preparatory program at Sheldon College offers a high calibre of teachers who day-in and day-out model the 3L’s of teaching – Love, Laughter and Learning, whilst also offering a program that consists of a balance of exploration, guided instruction and explicit teaching. Our Preparatory teachers instill in children an absolute love of learning as they are able to provide students with a rigorous academic program whilst still preserving the very essence of childhood. ‘GIFTED’ IS NOT A

DIRTY WORD Why is it important to identify gifted and talented students and cater for their needs? Labelling a student as ‘gifted’ often induces a variety of emotions, viewpoints and opinions, many of them surprisingly negative. It is important to realise though that in a 21st century classroom, ‘gifted’ is not a dirty word, especially when it refers to developing a whole new set of gifts or skills that these students need for future success.

the top 10% of their peers often aspire for high achieving careers such as medicine, dentistry, law, and veterinary medicine. I recall a teacher telling a student “you’re going to be doing my hip replacement one day.” This student had the potential academic capacity for medicine, but did they have the bedside manner or what it takes to be a good doctor?

An often-used definition of giftedness comes from the work of Professor François Gagne who asserts giftedness refers to outstanding natural abilities or aptitudes located in one or more domains which place a student in the top 10% of age peers. Most theories of giftedness use gifted and talented interchangeably, but in Gagne’s model a differentiation is made. In contrast, he refers to talent as developed competencies in fields of endeavour which relate to the world of work, and are mapped against John Holland’s theories of vocational choice where one’s education or work program is ideally matched against one’s personality.

In the changing world of work it is no longer enough just to be deemed brilliant, gifted or talented to be successful. Research indicates that during their working life today’s students are likely to have up to five careers and 17 jobs. The World Economic Forum believes the top skills needed for success in 2020 and beyond are complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, ability to collaborate and work as part of a team. The Foundation for Young Australians asserts that the demand for these enterprise skills is rising and employers will ask for these as often as for technical skills and academic knowledge.

So why is it important to identify gifted students and provide opportunities to cater for their needs?

The University of Queensland has recently introduced a Situational Judgement Test for students applying for their veterinary medicine program. They recognise that skills and attributes essential for veterinarians are not always reflected in academic performance alone. This test identifies the ‘soft’ skills needed to be a good vet, which encompasses more than just academic knowledge.

A new, contemporary approach to giftedness comes from a career perspective. Just because a student is gifted in a particular area it does not mean they will be successful in the related world of work. Students in

Education aspirations need to be identified so opportunities contribute to a student’s future and build upon their interests and passions. Winning the Queensland Japanese Speech Contest matters for a future language undergraduate, being a national finalist in UN Youth Voice Speech Competition is important for a student with diplomatic service aspirations, and winning the Somerset National Poetry Prize for an aspiring poet are all examples of opportunities catering to specific needs. STEM and entrepreneurial thinking are the current buzz words and it is estimated that 70% of new jobs in the future are likely to be in the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. These are the jobs that may not even have been created yet. So, what can we do to help students find their place in this unknown realm? Exposure to leading edge technology and hands-on workshops and challenges is key to building aspiration in these areas.

An over-arching reason for acquiring and developing these ‘soft’ skills is employability. The transformation from academically gifted student into employable graduate is part of a much greater developmental process than education alone. We need to provide opportunities for our identified students to acquire these non-academic skills necessary for success. This new world of work is unfathomable to most of today’s parents and grandparents who have experienced ‘a job for life’ and raises the question of what schools are doing to equip students for this unknown future. In the 21st century, schools need to approach students classified as ‘gifted’ from a totally new perspective. In response to this, Southern Cross Catholic College has developed a carefully curated program of co-curricular opportunities that enhance the developmental process for gifted students and relate to future employability. The underlying tenet of this is that opportunities are the building blocks of success and like success itself, these opportunities come in many forms. Opportunities need to be relevant and targeted to build upon academic achievement and to also develop technical and enterprise skills. Individual

Entrepreneurial thinking workshops guide students as they develop a business idea or social enterprise through to finally pitching it. Any opportunity involving public speaking is invaluable, as founder of TED Talks Chris Anderson asserts “presentation literacy is the new superpower”. Lions Youth of the Year is an outstanding resume builder, as is the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. These renowned programs inherently build the employability skills through community involvement, volunteering and skill development. Many other programs and opportunities are offered and tailored to cater for needs and aspirations. A variation on the theme of giftedness operates at Southern Cross Catholic College where students are encouraged and supported to reach for their potential through opportunities that inspire, encourage, extend and enrich in a variety of ways both inside and outside the classroom. Gifted is often seen as a dirty word due to the polarity of views and how to best approach it, however it can be argued that identifying ‘gifted’ students is essential to provide them with not only classroom extension but also the ‘gifts’ these students need for their future success. Education

Meet the Principal There are many things to consider when choosing the right school for your child: distance to travel, state or independent, facilities available and extra-curricular opportunities offered etc., but sometimes overlooked in the decision is the school’s Principal. The Principal is the school’s driving force, providing strategic direction for the growth and development of the school and building a successful school community in which staff, students and parents are valued and happy to belong. Their varied role is one of leadership, guidance, mentorship and encouragement. If you are looking for a school that has your child’s best interests at heart, we invite you to make the call and ‘Meet the Principal’.

10 Costumes Ideas for Book Week 2019

Reading is My Secret Power!

Book week is a fantastic opportunity for your child to celebrate their favourite characters from their favourite books by dressing up. However, if you’re the sort of parent that cringes when you hear the phrase “Book Week” then you are going to love this article which is all about easy book week costumes. Book Week 2019, runs from August 17-23, and this year asks your children to embrace the theme “Reading is My Secret Power”; an exciting invitation with a world full of possibilities when it comes to book week costume ideas. This is an opportunity to escape into another world where your child can be anything they want to be!

1. Harry Potter When it comes to book week ideas, Harry Potter is always a favourite. Have your child dress up as their favourite character from the book, whether that be Harry Potter himself or one of his friends Hermione Granger or Ron Weasley. Your child will love imagining they are attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the day and learning how to control their magical powers. Just note that Harry Potter is one of most popular book characters to dress up as, so don’t go for this if your child wants something unique. Book Inspiration: Harry Potter by JK Rowling

2. Matilda In terms of kids book week costumes, you can’t get much more appropriate than Matilda. Matilda not only has a passion for reading books, but she also has psychokinetic powers. Kids will love dressing up as Matilda and taking on her brave and confident characteristics. Let’s see them try to move random objects around the air with their minds. If you’re looking for simple book day costumes, put your child in a blue dress, white stockings and black shoes, or order the full costume online – see details next page. Book Inspiration: Matilda by Roald Dahl

3. Cat in the Hat If anyone has the power to get kids reading, Dr Seuss does! It’s no wonder that the Cat in the Hat is a regular when it comes to book character dress up ideas.

Your Local Families Magazine August / September 2019 www.familiesmagazine.com.au

Whilst I’m not sure what powers (if any) the cat in the hat has, he certainly gets into mischief and has the amazing power of kids wanting to read the books he features in, over and over again – he surely has some super powers! The Cat in the Hat can be one of the simple book character costumes you can make at home. Grab some cardboard and get a red bow tie from a cheap shop. Otherwise for an easier book week character dress up – see the link below find the options we have on our website for you. Book Inspiration: Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss

4. Superman Perhaps not technically a book, but rather a comic, still Superman is a popular choice when it comes to book week dress up ideas. Through his super human powers Superman is always at the right place at the right time, saving anyone in distress. Your child will love having the power of flight, super human strength and x-ray vision and using their super powers only for good. Book Inspiration: Superman by DC Comics

5. Find your super power … in the skies! If your child loves the idea of flying through the sky, but not really a Superman fan, another idea for book day costumes is a cute pilot outfit. What powers can be found in the skies? Birds? Clouds? Let you imagination run wild. The possibilities are endless; you could grab your pilot hat and fly away to an exotic island or perhaps even Antarctica! Book inspiration: On the Plane by Carron Brown.

6. Harriet the Spy

9. Dora the Explorer

How about dressing up as one the most famous literacy sleuths of all time, Harriet Welsch. Harriet’s super powers are being bold, unique and unafraid to be herself.

Another one of the fantastic yet simple book week costumes for the younger kids is no other than Dora the Explorer. Whilst Dora might not possess any super powers herself, she certainly makes up for it in her amazing navigational and problem solving skills.

Harriet the Spy is great if you’re after one of the easy literacy character costumes as your child may already have everything, they need in their wardrobe. All you need is a pair of jeans, a simple red jumper, sneakers, a rain coat and a notebook for detailing all your observations – making it one of the really easy book character dress up ideas. Book Inspiration: Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh

7. Zac Power If you’re looking for Australian characters for book week, then another popular spy character for kid to dress up as is Zac Power. Zac Power is a young boy who is a secret agent for an intelligence agency and is always sent on missions to save the world. Zac Power is yet another easy book character dress up, as no doubt you have much of it at home already. Put on a pair of jeans, black t shirt, backpack full of spy gear like these night mission googles and walkie talkies and make a lanyard with your spy ID. Another great choice for cheap book week costumes. If you need to buy any of the costume pieces, check out our link below. Book Inspiration: Zac Power: Poison Island by HI Larry

8. Batman Ok another one of the book character costume ideas which is a comic not a book, but when it comes to super powers Batman has to be on the list. Unlike Superman, Batman doesn’t possess any super human powers, however he has a genius level intellect (perhaps from reading books) and is brilliant when it comes to martial arts. He also has an array of extraordinary weapons and equipment at his disposal in order to keep our society safe from the bad guys.

Dora is a seven year old Latina girl who with the help of her friend’s backpack, map and Boots regularly goes on exciting adventures. Along her adventures, Dora is regularly faced with problems that she must solve as well as working out how best to deal with the infamous Swiper. Dora the Explorer is great idea if you’re looking for cheap book week costumes, as you could probably make it work with what your child already has in the cupboard. All you need is a pink t shirt, a pair of orange shorts, a purple backpack (or the actual backpack), pair of sneakers and yellow frilly socks. If you don’t have these items, there are some great Dora the Explorer costumes online also (see below). Book Inspiration: Dora the Explorer

10. Captain Underpants Captain Underpants is the creation of two fourth graders George and Harold who have created the greatest superhero in the history of their school! Captain Underpants has a range of super powers which he uses to fight evil. Some of his powers include super strength, he can fly, he has wedgie power and more! Captain Underpants is one of the fairly easy storybook character costumes to wear. Dress them in a skin coloured leggings or pants and skin colour top – then put over the top a great big pair of white y front underpants. Top it off with a red cape. Of course, we don’t expect your little one just to wear their undies to school! Coming as Captain Underpants is one of the kids book week costume ideas that is sure to get a few laughs. Book Inspiration: Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey

Book Inspiration: Batman by DC Comics

With the magic of books comes endless possibilities! We hope these children’s Book Week costume ideas will help spark your imagination. 10 WAYS TO DEVELOP FINE MOTOR SKILLS

IN BABIES & TODDLERS

Fine motor movements involve the coordination of small muscles in the fingers and hands. Development of fine motor skills enables your child to perform essential self-care tasks and prepares them for independent learning at school. Independent eating It sounds simple, and perhaps makes you cringe with the thought of the mess your child will make, but it is an easy way to help your child develop their fine motor skills. Not only is it free, but it’s easily incorporated into your daily routine. It helps assist the progress of moving from having a fist grip to a four-finger grip to a pincer grip. Although it can be messy, allowing your child to pick up their finger foods or hold a spoon requires a lot of hand-eye coordination in order for the food to make it to the final destination – their mouth.

Dressing themselves When the desire for independence kicks in and the morning arguments start because you chose an outfit for the day and your child wants to choose their own, you can embrace it as an opportunity for them to grow their fine motor skills. Dressing oneself requires fine motor skills, so the more you encourage your little ones to do this independently, the better it is for them. Putting on socks requires a solid pincer grip and strength, pulling up pants and putting on shirts requires hand-eye coordination, balance and hand stability. Allowing your child to dress themselves frequently results in repetition and we know that practice makes perfect.

Large threading – puzzles or beads Threading is a great activity for kids and can be suited for older and younger children. For younger children, you can use large beads, cut straws, or wood images with holes for threading; these are ability-level appropriate and have a low choking hazard to ensure safety. An activity

18

like threading is great for improving fine motor to strengthen hand muscles in order to prepare your child for movements like writing. Not only does it develop fine motor skills, but it is also a great quiet time and calming down activity. You could even turn their threadings into necklaces, giving the child a creation of the activity that they completed.

Art – drawing and gluing It’s no secret that children love art, preferably the type that has no boundaries and allows them to get their hands dirty. Activities that involve drawing and gluing are great at improving fine motor skills as it helps strengthen the child’s hand dominance; given they have a dominant hand. It’s important to strengthen the dominant hand in order to maximise precision for when they become older. While improving one hand, it also helps the use of both as while one hand is doing the drawing, the other hand needs to work to steady the paper while they draw. This also improves object manipulation in order to move the tools with control in order to draw in a particular way.

Playdough Manipulating malleable materials is another fun activity that increases a child’s fine motor skills. Providing the playdough or clay, and ensuring to watch closely to make sure they don’t eat any of it, direct them to mould it in the air rather than on a flat surface. This increases the chance of use of single fingers at a time and maximises the increase of hand and finger strength. To make it even more fun, you could work together to make your own playdough, making the experience even more rewarding for your little one as they get to play with the product of their hard work.

Blocks Blocks are suitable for all ages, whether it’s for babies who are learning to grasp or toddlers who are learning to build. Babies can practice grasping, dropping, throwing, hitting together, picking up or passing blocks, all of which are important for developing those little muscles in the hands. Toddlers can learn to stack, build and even place the blocks inside containers and take them back out. There are blocks that are all types of sizes and textures on the market, and plenty of budget friendly options available, making them the perfect tool to assist your child’s development and for some fun too. Blocks also stimulate problem solving, coordination and spatial awareness.

Family Health Puzzles Puzzles are a great game for toddlers and have many hidden educational purposes. In order to pick up puzzle pieces, whether it’s the traditional flat pieces or those with the pegs to help younger ones, children are required to use either a pinch or grasping motion. They then need to maintain that grasp, move the pieces around and position them in the desired places. Puzzles also increase cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and hand-eye coordination, making them a great all round developmental improving activity.

Musical instruments Babies and toddlers are drawn to anything that makes a noise, so musical instruments are instantly appealing to the younger mind. While they are noisy and fun, musical instruments are also great at improving fine motor skills when children are required to grip the instrument and retain that hold. It’s further developed when they then want to retain the hold and move the indtrument around. Some instruments that are great for working those tiny hand muscles are maracas for whole hand grip, a ukulele for more individualised finger movements, a drum for whole hand movement, a xylophone for grip on the sticks or percussion clappers.

Tongs or tweezers A pair of common kitchen tongs or large plastic child safe tweezers are great for children of the toddler age. It’s said that a child’s ability to use tools such as tongs or tweezers is a pre-scissor

skill, as children have to learn how to use two sides of their hands at the same time in order to operate the tool. You can use tongs to pick up toys like rubber ducks, small toy cars or teddy bears. You could also get your child to pick up large pom poms or ping pong balls with tongs. When the child becomes more advanced or older, you could purchase a pair of large plastic tweezers - these are great for more precise picking up of items like beads, pieces of cereal or marbles. This activity will keep your child concentrating and quiet all whilst improving their fine motor skills.

Sand and water table Including sensory play is important to give your child exposure to different types of textures, sounds, smells, tastes and looks, and a simple way to do this is through water and sand play.

You can purchase budget-friendly troughs that are off the ground and allow it to be filled with all sorts of materials, like the proposed water and sand, or you could use dirt, Styrofoam bits or any other materials you deem appropriate. Through this play children develop their fine motor skills when they are using their hand and eye coordination to scoop up water, grip on to wet and slippery containers, pour water or sand and rummage through the material. It will also develop their math and science skills when they experience concepts like floating and sinking or wet and dry, and can also provide a great social skill opportunity if playing with other children to learn to share and play together. Nara Deer Park, located in Nara Park (奈良公園 Nara Kōen), Japan is a wonderful attraction for adults and children alike. Over 1,200 wild sika deer (シカ or 鹿 shika) roam free so if you are at all interested in animals (or have kids that are), you should really consider a visit to this park to feed the deer. These deer have been designated as a ‘national treasure’. We loved being able to feed so many deer and couldn’t go past the opportunity to visit these free roaming deer on our visit to Nara. Whilst the deer are ‘wild’ they really have been semi-domesticated with all the human interaction. There are deer of various ages from young fawns to older does and bucks. Mostly we found them to be friendly and not at all dangerous. But of course, bear in mind, technically they are wild animals. This article will tell you where the Nara Deer Park is, what to feed the deer and show you our personal experience of being with these lovely animals including the famous Japanese deer bow that we had heard about and now saw for ourselves!

Where is Nara Deer Park in Japan Nara Park is a public park located in the city of Nara, Japan, at the foot of Mount Wakakusa. Established in 1880 it is one of the oldest parks in Japan. It is managed by the Nara Prefecture. Including 2 shrines, the park is over 600 hectares large.

Catching the local bus to feed the deer If you don’t feel like the 30 minute walk, you can take the bus, that stops right outside the train station. It costs adults ¥210 (~ $3) and children ¥110 (~ $1.50). It’s a special loop line for tourists that takes 10 minutes. There was a big sign at the front of the bus saying where it was going, so we found it quite easy to locate…. but we did actually decide to walk to enjoy the street on the way up and back!

The park is home to the Nara National Museum and Todai-ji, where the largest wooden building in the world houses a 15-metre (50 ft) tall statue of Buddha. You can also find the Kōfuku-ji Temple within the park’s grounds.

How to get from Nara JR Station to Nara Deer Park Here are the best directions to get from Nara JR Station to the Nara Deer Park. Walking from Nara JR Station to feed the deer at Nara Deer Park If you decide you want to walk to the Nara Deer Park, it is an easy, flat 30 minute walk from JR Nara station to Nara Deer Park. If you use our map ^^^, it’ll take you along the main street, with lots of shops and restaurants. There are plenty of deer souvenirs to buy too. If you look at the shops though, obviously, it’ll take you more than 30 minutes to walk to Nara Deer Park. You cannot buy the deer food here… you will need to wait until you are inside the park – they have official sellers.

20

What do the deer eat at Nara Deer Park? When you arrive at Nara Deer Park, you’ll need to wander around for a bit, looking for a stand selling (鹿煎餅 Shika-senbei) or translated to ‘deer crackers’. You can get a pack of 10 crackers, that can be broken into smaller pieces. We broke each cracker into quarters, so we ended up with 40 pieces to feed the deer. Please note that this is the ONLY food that is allowed to be fed to the deer.

How much does it cost to feed the Nara Deer? When purchasing your deer crackers, look for a stand selling packs of 10 for ¥150 (~ $2). We didn’t see any more expensive ones, but you never know. We loved feeding the deer so much, we came back to buy some more crackers.

to sleep at night. As they often use woods in the park as their sleeping place, you may see them in the woods even in night-time. The deer also have special ‘leave me alone’ areas that are fenced (or roped) off so humans cannot interact with them. Please respect their ‘down time’ and do not enter these enclosures.

Nara Deer Park entrance fee

How to feed the deer at Nara Deer Park The deer at Nara Deer Park, have to be the most respectful deer I’ve ever met. A Japanese guide told us the routine for feeding the deer: Steps for feeding the deer at Nara 1. Before giving them a cracker, hold it above their heads, and wait for them to bow. 2. Then hold the cracker behind your back and bow with the deer for the second bow. 3. Hold it above their heads once more for the third bow. 4. He said that ideally you want the three bows from the deer. Then you may reward them with the cracker. Sometimes the deer will wonder over to you, and just start bowing. Sometimes the deer will try to get into your pockets, headbutt you, or even jump up at the crackers in your hand, so be careful. We kept our crackers in mum’s backpack, and she took little pieces out each time we wanted to feed the deer.

Nara Deer Park hours

To enter the park, is completely free, but purchasing crackers will cost you ¥150 (~ $2) for 10.

What to do if you see an injured deer If you see an injured deer, you are asked to please contact the Nara Park deer consultation desk (phone: 0742-26-7755).

Watch our video to see the Nara bowing deer I made a video of our time at Nara Deer Park. If you use your phones camera over the QR code below (and tap on ‘open bit. ly in Safari) it will take you to my full article and you can watch my video (and show it to your children – the deer are so cute!) Nara Deer Park is open 24 hours. Although the deer start their day at sunrise and spend morning to evening feeding on grass (and crackers!), they do sometimes head into the woods
