E R A C D L I H C S E I L I M A F & TRAVEL Which Childcare is Right For You? Traveling in Tokyo with Kids What’s On - Families Fun!

The Clever Resource for Thinking Parents

October / November 2019

Contents Welcome TO OUR Childcare & Families Travel issue! This time last year I was watching my family succumb to explosive gastro in Bali. I miss holidays! Now that our youngest is well and truly too large to pass for “oh he’s under two, he’s just really big for his age - 99th percentile!” we can no longer afford to holiday as a family. Instead Baby Daddy and I have made the executive decision to take our major bi-annual holidays solo (I went to Thailand with my sister; he’s going to Fiji for a mate’s 50th) and we are just going to stop mowing the backyard and tell the kids it’s the jungle - instant adventure park! We also have our final kid starting Prep next year, which is lucky because the uniform on the middle child fits like a crop top - he looks like he’s heading off to the Twink Float at Mardi Gras rather than Year 2. Time to upgrade the eldest to FRESH second-hand uniforms and pass the tattered remnants down the line. Prep next year also means the end of a ten-year relationship with our family daycare hero, Colleen. She has kept the three kids alive, free from sunburn, fed and watered and in protective custody when the drop off was more of a dropkick. Love and gratitude forever to our childcare workers! We are moving into the sticky end of the year so remember to high five the teachers, carers and other parents in your orbit: somehow we have made it through.

Looking for the latest local news and views? We've got it covered! CRAZY ARMS STYLISH SUN PROTECTION

What’s quicker and easier to apply than sunscreen, made with moisture wicking 100% recycled fibre, and a stylish UPF 50+ accessory to add to any wardrobe? Crazy Arms! November 17-23 is National Skin Cancer Awareness Week and, coincidentally, the first birthday of innovative Aussie sun protection brand, Crazy Arms.

NEW PARK FOR PALLARA

The Crazy Arms story began with three Dads (one of whom had already had a skin cancer removed) on a journey of research and product development to find a no-fuss slip-on sun protection sleeve for their kids to wear with t-shirts and uniforms. This lead them to UPF 50+ 100% recycled material comprised largely of reclaimed ‘ghost’ fishing nets that have been abandoned in our oceans. To make it fun, they printed them in a range of fun pattern designs that would appeal to 5 - 11 year olds. “The Crazy Arms sleeves have been a great hit with the kids,” Martin, one of the Founders tells us, “so we’ve now extended the range to include ‘one-size-fits-most’ adult Crazy Arms for mums, dads, and grandparents, helping the older generations stay protected and model sun smart behaviour”.

Pallara, located 19kms south of Brisbane, is now home to the brand new Pallara District Park.

The exciting new development, which opened on September 14, includes a 190m learn-to-ride circuit for budding cyclists complete with speed humps, street markings, intersections and signage to help give kids a knowledge of road rules as well as a safe place to learn to pedal. There is also a 10-metre high climbing tower, swings and a slide, exercise stations, barbecue shelters, bike racks, and all the facilities families need to enjoy family gatherings and safe outdoor play. Find the new park at Brookbent Road, Pallara https://www.familiesmagazine.com.au/pallara-district-park/

If you’re looking for something a little different for a stocking stuffer this year, why not treat the whole family to mix-and-match Crazy Arms! You can read more about the Crazy Arms product and story at www.familiesmagazine.com.au/crazy-arms-sun-protection

JOIN THE HATCHERY CRUSADERS!

Calling all students and teachers, it’s time to get creative with entries to the World Science Festival Brisbane 2020 Hatchery Crusaders competition now open!

In the lead up to World Science Festival Brisbane 2020, schools are invited to collect plastic debris from nearby waterways and produce artwork that reflects their learning about plastic pollution and its impact on our precious marine life. Students will have until December 6 to complete their artwork with finalists notified in early February. The finalist artworks will be showcased during the World Science Festival Brisbane in March 2020 at the Queensland Museum to raise public awareness about the plight of marine turtles. The winning school will have a special opportunity to name one of the museum’s turtle hatchlings, as well as first priority entrance to THE HATCHERY during World Science Festival Brisbane in March 2020. Childcare

Which Childcare Option is Right for You? We’re lucky to have so many childcare choices available to us in Queensland, and they come with a range of benefits for you and your child. Childcare can allow parents to return to work or study or simply to have a little regular “me time”, and children in a childcare environment have the opportunity to hone their social skills, participate in regular learning activities and prepare for school. Our guide to the different types of childcare available will help you find the right option to suit your needs.

Family Day Care

Long Day Care

Family day care is a home-from-home environment, usually for children aged from birth to 12 years old. Carers can look after up to seven children at a time in their home, with a maximum of four being below school age. This figure includes their own children under 13 years of age if no other adult is available to care for them. Each family day care educator will set their own working hours and fee structure and can choose to provide nappies and meals or request that you supply your own.

Long day care is great if you work a full day and need to factor in commute time too. Most long day care providers operate at least 10 hours per day, Monday to Friday, but may close on public holidays or at other times of the year.

Family day care can offer the most flexible care options with some educators also offering overnight and weekend care. All family day care providers must comply with set legislative requirements regarding education, first aid and childcare certification, excursion planning, insurance and record keeping. FAMILY DAY CARE CONSIDERATIONS µ home-from-home environment µ small groups µ flexible arrangements µ one carer that your child can bond with µ alternative arrangements may be required at short notice if the carer is unavailable

Long day care is usually provided in a centre and structured around agespecific rooms, often with planned educational activities and visiting activity and entertainment providers. There is a minimum educator-to-child ratio that varies according to the age of the children in the group. In Queensland that’s 1:4 for infants under 2 years old, 1:5 for children aged between 24 and 36 months, and 1:11 for pre-schoolers aged 3 years and over. Each centre may set its own fees based around the facilities and staffing provided. Most long day care centres now offer the option to book a half day or a full day, but you will pay the full amount for the period booked even if you only use a small part of it. Many long day care providers further ease the burden on time-poor parents by providing nutritious meals and nappies, and most offer an approved Kindergarten program for children turning 4 years old by June 30 of the year – no double drop-offs and pick-ups for pre-school siblings! LONG DAY CARE CONSIDERATIONS µ open weekdays for early drop-offs and late pick-ups

Nannies and Au Pairs

µ nutritious meals and nappies often included

A nanny or au pair will take care of your children in your own home and provide assistance with feeding, bathing and dressing your child, taking your child to school, appointments and activities, and light household chores as required.

µ a team of staff always available

µ bigger facilities can mean more scope for activities and entertainment µ bigger ‘classes’ of children to socialise with

There are several agencies in Brisbane who will help you find a nanny or au pair to match your needs, and each agency will have its own standards for vetting and skills-testing the nannies and/or au pairs on their books. It’s important to choose a good agency and ask lots of questions to get the right nanny or au pair for you. A nanny is an experienced and qualified childcare worker who will work set hours in your home before returning to their own. An au pair is usually an overseas visitor looking for work experience in Australia and may live with you as part of your family whilst looking after your children. A nanny will be paid an hourly rate and an au pair will receive ‘pocket money’ in addition to food, board and other incidentals such as internet access and transport. Read our article for more information about hiring an au pair: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/au-pair-cost/ NANNY AND AU PAIR CONSIDERATIONS µ ‘at home’ routine is maintained for your child µ a nanny could be part-time or live in; an au pair will usually live with your family µ convenient care to suit your requirements

Kindergarten

All Queensland children turning four by June 30 of the year can take part in a kindergarten program. Low or no cost kindergarten is available to Health Care Card holders and children or parents who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Fees may be payable at some independent kindergarten centres so it’s good to do a little research into what’s available in your local area if cost might be an issue. Unless part of a long day care centre, most kindergartens operate during school hours and term time only. Kindergartens (also known as pre-prep) may be attached to the primary school your child will attend. This introduces the child to the school environment and its facilities. Children will spend five hours per day at kindergarten, five days per fortnight – usually three days one week and two days the next. Kindergartens offer an approved educational program to prepare your child for Prep, focussing on skills required, learning, and stimulating experiences. KINDERGARTEN CONSIDERATIONS µ approved educational program µ can help your child prepare for school µ limited operating hours unless part of a long day care centre µ available in many primary schools and independent centres µ you may have to provide your child’s meals

OSHC CONSIDERATIONS µ they do the school run for you µ snacks and light meals may be provided µ some provide school holiday care too

Special Needs Childcare All children in Australia are entitled to have access to childcare. For children with additional needs that can make the search for the right provider a little more challenging. It’s worth considering what you hope to achieve from the service and expected outcomes before embarking on the search. A specialist family day care or nanny could be perfect if routine and familiar surroundings are important. If your child will be attending a mainstream school, a long day care centre may be able to offer tailored care with specially trained staff. Not all childcare providers have the facilities to offer specialist care, but there are family day care providers, nanny agencies, and long day care centres in Brisbane that do. Depending on your child’s needs, it’s important to have clear conversations with the childcare provider to make sure they are fully across any special dietary needs, medication, therapy, specialist first-aid and education programs to provide the best care for your child.

Childcare in Queensland

Outside School Hours Care Outside school hours care (OSHC) provides care before and after school and sometimes through school holidays - for school-aged children. It’s convenient for parents and care-givers who work or study and can’t be available at usual drop-off and pick-up times. Most primary and some secondary schools offer outside school hours care, but it’s not always provided on the premises of the school your child attends. Your school might use an outside service such as PCYC or long day care provider who will do the school runs for you and look after your child at their centre. Ask your school for details about their OSHC service and fees. At OSHC your child may be given breakfast and/or afternoon tea and provided with a place to do homework, participate in activities and play games.

All childcare workers in Queensland, whether au pairs visiting from overseas or permanent residents of Australia, must have a paid Blue Card (police check) to work with children. If eligible, you may be able to claim government rebates and financial assistance when using the services of a registered childcare provider, including employing a nanny or au pair from an agency. You can find out more about the different childcare options in Queensland here: www.childcarefinder.gov.au/ To find more information about education settings in Brisbane and surrounds go to www.familiesmagazine.com.au/brisbane/schools-education/all

10 Things to do in TOKYO with Kids To see Alex’s more of Ja nine & adven tures the familie m on Insta follow g s_ma gazin ram e_trav els

Japan attracts tourists from Australia all year round, and one of the best seasons to go to Japan is in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Editor Janine and her son visited Tokyo in spring this year, and together with some blogging friends found the best things to do in Tokyo with kids!

Why visit Tokyo with kids? Tokyo is an absolutely bustling city, ripe with culture and history whilst being connected to the pulsing heartbeat of technological advancements. Luckily, we are blessed with reasonably priced flights from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast airports. Here are our top 10 things to do in Tokyo. To read about ALL the tips for kid friendly Tokyo, see our website link at the bottom of this article.

1. Maxell Aqua Park Maxell Aqua Park is a hidden gem in Tokyo. From colourful and interactive displays to excellent animal shows and exhibits, it is something to be enjoyed by all members of the family. Children will get excited right from the start with the first fish tank that features fireworks digitally displayed among the fish. The theme continues with colour-changing lights shining throughout all of the exhibits. Maxell does a great job of mixing Japanese culture with modern technology. Throughout the aquarium, the exhibits and displays continue to impress, and the adults can enjoy a fun break at the Coral Café with aquatic-themed drinks. Go around the next corner and you’ll enter the jellyfish room – which was incredible! The jellies are all in cylindrical tubes that are lit with colour-changing lights amidst a dark room.

2. Asakusa Head to Asakusa for a taste of old Japan. In its side streets you can walk in the footsteps of monks and geisha, along with those of the tourists teeming around the striking 7th century Sensō-ji temple and the Kaminarimon Gate, the district’s main attraction. Kids will love donning traditional attire from one the many kimono rental stores in the area to explore the historical monument. Or perhaps they’d prefer their own personal walking tour of Asakusa and neighbouring Ryogoku with a sumo wrestler and English translator as their guides? Bustling Nakamise is the traditional shopping street linking the symbolic Kaminari-mon Gate and Sensō-ji. It is a big hit with kids thanks to its many trinkets, dolls and toys, as well as plentiful snacks including Ningyo Yaki, a warm cake filled with sweet red bean paste. Be sure to check out the rear of the Sensō-ji temple grounds too for food vendors hawking kid favourites like kaarage (Japanese fried chicken) and green tea ice-cream.

3. Tokyo Skytree If you want to get up high in Tokyo, then the kids will love the Tokyo Skytree! Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting and observation tower in Sumida,

8

Tokyo. It became the tallest structure in Japan in 2010 and reached its full height of 634 metres (2,080 ft) in March 2011, making it the tallest tower in the world. It is the second tallest structure in the world after the Burj Khalifa. Once you have bought your tickets, make your way to the tower’s 4th floor where you will have a quick and smooth elevator ride to the 350m observation deck or the 450m Tembo Gallery, known as the world’s highest skywalk with a sloping spiral ramp that gains height as it circles the tower. Remember a few tips before going to Tokyo Skytree. If you go in the morning, you might get a chance to see Mt. Fuji rising from the distance, or if you drop by in the evening, you will be in awe of the thousands of lights illuminating the entire Tokyo City…. It is worth the visit!

4. TeamLab: Borderless at the Mori Digital Art Museum Located on the man-made island of Odaiba in Tokyo Bay, TeamLab: Borderless is the one museum that I’d suggest you take kids of any age. The displays here consist of dazzling digital creations that you can interact with and change as you like. The whole place is a bit like a darkened maze, with corridors connecting rooms with different displays (so do keep an eye on your kids). TeamLab: Borderless is unsurprisingly fantastic for kids, even small ones. Upstairs there is a large space with several areas designed especially for little kids. There is an interactive play area where toddlers under 5 can build digital roads between objects, and even a baby area. Kids can also chase and stamp on digital lizards and insects in the main area. Our favourite thing here was bouncing on trampolines to create stars which burst in supernovas.

5. Imperial Palace Tokyo’s concrete jungle can be tiresome at times, especially for kids. So, a visit to the Imperial Palace might prove a pleasant escape from all the hustle and bustle of the city. The Imperial Palace East Gardens are open to the public. They are part of the inner palace grounds and the entrance is a short walk from Otemachi Station. The East Gardens is where the old castle used to stand during the Edo period. However, all that’s left today are the moats, some gates, and the guardhouses. You can’t enter any of the buildings, but they are interesting to look at from the outside. Near the garden’s entrance, you can visit the Museum of the Imperial Collection (free). To the kids’ delight, you’ll also find a vending machine selling ice cream here.

10. Miraikan 6. Shinjuku Gyoen The sprawling Shinjuku Gyoen Park is located in the heart of Shinjuku and the serenity of the park is a fabulous contrast to the surrounding neighbourhood. It’s the perfect escape from the towering skyscrapers, neon lights and chaotic streets of Shinjuku! The original purpose of Shinjuku Gyoen was as an imperial retreat but today it is accessible to the public. Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo’s largest parks and is comprised of three distinct gardens: a traditional Japanese Garden, a formal French Garden and a landscaped English Garden. If you visit Tokyo during cherry blossom season, make sure to visit Shinjuku Gyoen. The hundreds of Sakura trees in Shinjuku Gyoen make it one of Tokyo’s most popular spots.

7. Tokyo Samurai Museum The Tokyo Samurai Museum is one of the easiest ways to encounter a samurai and learn a little about the history of this warrior class, their culture and what has become of them in modern times. Situated in Shinjuku, the Tokyo Samurai Museum is easily accessible by foot from the major station. It is here that you can explore two floors of carefully curated examples of amazing samurai armour, weapons and artifacts.

Miraikan (or the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) is one of the best science museums we’ve ever visited. It’s a huge museum talking about a lot of things related to technology: from Asimo, the robot, to experiments on how the internet works, realistic robots, and even stories on how technology can help with world crises. It’s on Odaiba, which is an entertainment island in Tokyo (and it’s worth visiting anyway) so even getting there is fun – you can get there with the Yurikamome, the driverless tram! Kids will enjoy playing screen games to see if they could survive something or the other; others might like ‘talking’ to the super realistic robot (that actually talks and answers); they can even have fun sending out coded messages and receiving on the other end of a funny coding machine. If you’re around at the right time, there are workshops and activities (included on the price) that you or your kids can take part in. There are some special exhibits and the Dome Theatre, a 360 theatre that sounds fun – they cost a little extra, but may be worth it if they interest your family. Find even more things to do in Tokyo with kids in our detailed online article here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/things-do-in-tokyo-with-kids or for more information about travelling in Tokyo and Japan see my favourite websites: www.gotokyo.org/en, www.thetokyochapter.com, https://pretraveller.com/

For children, the opportunity to learn a few sword moves during the daily Samurai demonstration sessions is likely to be something they talk about when recounting their trip. Make sure you check the website for the daily schedule as it’s not to be missed.

8. Tokyo Disneyland & DisneySea There are two Disney Parks near Tokyo. Tokyo Disneyland is more or less a replica of the Disneyland amusement parks that can also be found in Paris and California. DisneySea is something slightly different. The scenery is where DisneySea really excels. The park even won the Thea Award for concept, design and construction. The park has attractions for all ages. There are some really fun rides like the Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Indiana Jones and Toy Story. It’s easy to get to the Disney Parks. In Tokyo station you need to take the JR Keiyo line to Maihama Station. When you get out you can either walk to the entrance - it’s about a 20-minute walk - or hop on the Disney Monorail.

9. Harajuku The Harajuku neighbourhood is found between Shibuyu and Shinjuku area covers the streets around Harajuku station. Kids of all ages love this area for its typically Japanese kawaii (cute) shops and rainbow themed food (mainly sweets!) concept stalls. In Harajuku you can get a rainbow toasted cheese sandwich, rainbow fairy floss and rainbow noodles. Start your Harajuku adventure with a walk down Takeshita Street. Here Japanese youth show off the latest street style trends and there are hundreds of little shops in side streets where you can recreate their looks. The best places to shop for street wear are GR8 and Dog. When you get hungry stop at the Kawaii Monster cafe where you can watch a show over yet more rainbow coloured food. There’s even the opportunity to get on stage and dance with the performers. At Harry’s cafe you can pat a hedgehog or just snack at one of the many crepe shops in the area. At Marion Crepes there is a wall of options – both sweet and savoury to choose from. Your Local Families Magazine October / November 2019 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
