DECEMBER 2019 / JANUARY 2020
Contents Welcome to our Summer Days Out and Clubs & Classes Issue! Well, I’m disappointed to find none of my New Year’s Resolutions happened again this year. Did I do yoga every day? No. Did I stop yelling at the kids? Also no. I do yell positive affirmations at them which is an improvement though: “I BELIEVE IN YOU”, “YOU ARE PERFECT AS YOU ARE”. I may need to review this strategy. Another year is almost done, another pre-order booklist came home that I will forget about ‘til Feb and regret not doing. We have a tradition in our house where at the end of each year I clear out their school bags and learn the names of their classmates. “Here’s Zara’s pencil. And one of Robert’s. Here’s Susan’s eraser. Wow, you have Maddox’ homework book, I bet he missed that” etc. Mia - if you are out there - we have your scissors from two years ago and they are great; I wish we knew what brand they are. Fortunately, none of my children has any of their own supplies come home either, so I hope it’s an elaborate Christmas swap and we are all happy to walk away with something new. If you aren’t sure what to get teachers/childcare workers - or anyone - as a thank you gift I highly recommend cash. Everyone loves it and it’s a thoughtful, retro gift. You can get around a ‘no cash’ policy by folding it into an origami Christmas Tree and hey presto, it’s homemade craft.

Save on back to school costs
There’s no denying this time of year can be expensive. No sooner have you wished everyone a Merry Christmas and done ALL the fun summer holiday stuff, then the back-to-school costs arrive like an unwelcome visitor. Have the kids grown? Are last year’s school shoes worn through? Do you really have to buy everything on the book list? Fear not, there ARE ways to save on those back to school costs. SCHOOL UNIFORMS Kids grow, there’s no denying that, and if they’ve already outgrown the uniform you bought two-sizes-too-big last year - and you’ve let down hems as far as they will go – then they definitely need replacing. • Buy the essentials – If you want to buy new but the budget won’t run to a uniform for each day of the week, buy a couple of full sets and commit to doing the washing more often. • Spread the costs – Put off buying warmer clothes until the seasons start to change. • Second-hand uniforms – Most school uniform shops have very serviceable second-hand uniforms for sale at much reduced prices. • Talk to other parents – Get to know parents with older kids at your school and ask them if they have any second-hand items they can hand on to you. • Check social media – There might already be a Facebook group of parents from your school with uniforms to sell or swap, or try asking in your local parenting groups. • Labelling is essential – Putting your child’s name on every single uniform item is important as your child’s uniform will hopefully be returned to you if they lose it. Make the label as large and obvious as possible so if it accidentally gets taken home by another child, the parent will quickly see it’s not theirs. • Is generic an option? – If your child’s school has plain socks in their uniform, you might find cheaper alternatives to the uniform shop’s brand in the high street. • Offset the cost – If your own outgrown uniforms are still in good condition you can sell them to offset the cost of replacements.
8
SCHOOL SHOES School shoes are big business and retailers will vie for your custom. Many will offer discounts or “buy one pair, get one half price” specials. If you’re buying for multiple children this is great. If you’re buying for one, team up with a friend to share the discount, or buy the same shoe in a bigger size for when your child’s feet inevitably grow.
STATIONERY AND SUPPLIES The booklist can be a big part of your back-to-school costs, especially as some now include electronic devices. Here are some ways to save: • Check what you already have – Search through the desks and cupboards in your home and check what your child brought home at the end of the last school year. Items like scissors, rulers and pencil cases appear on the lists every year but they don’t always need replacing. It’s quick and easy to ‘select all’ items on the booklist, but investing the time to see what you don’t need can save you heaps.
Your Local Families Magazine December 2019 / January 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Education • Labelling saves you money – Be sure to clearly label everything your child takes to school to save you the expense of replacing what gets lost. • Set a limit – If your kids are older, agree on a budget with them so they can choose what they get and at the same time learn a life lesson about budgeting and managing money. • Haggle – It’s ok to ask a store if they will price match an item on your booklist to save you going from store to store. Some will, some won’t, but you’ve nothing to lose by asking. As for those electronic devices, many big retailers and electronic brands offer discount schemes for eligible students and schools. Check in-store for details or ask your school if they have an arrangement with a preferred supplier.
TRANSPORT COSTS If your child is catching public transport to school, make sure you apply for a valid concession card for cheaper fares. You can get them at many newsagents. • Go early but look for sales – Shopping early can mean you get what you want rather than what’s left over, but there are advantages to waiting until January. Big retailers will often have a “Back-to-School” sale where you can save on essentials and multibuys. Don’t forget to go back at the of January to stock up on the clearance items you know you will need next year! • Avoid impulse buys – Stick to a list or go shopping without the kids so you won’t be tempted by them to buy more than you need. • Don’t buy into expensive stuff – Knowing that they might be lost or trashed, aim for cheap but durable stationery supplies that will last, rather than brand name items. Look to shop at discount stores, supermarkets or bulk stationery stores known for good prices or price matching.
Did you know? The Queensland Government can help with back to school costs by providing assistance for eligible students travelling to and from school under the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS). This applies to travel on Translink buses, ferries and trains. Visit www.translink.com.au and search STAS to find out more.
PLAN YOUR BUDGET Work out what you can afford to spend before you shop. Research prices in catalogues and on the stores’ websites, make your plan (allowing for alternatives in case of ‘sold outs’) and stick to it. Shopping with cash makes it easier to see when your budget is running out and make adjustments. If you’re super organised and want to plan ahead, put a little aside each week for excursions and projects, or even towards next year’s back-to-school costs!

Bursaries and Scholarships Financial Help for Private Secondary Education
Bursaries and scholarships are available to provide financial assistance in many private Brisbane high schools. They can be highly sought after and very competitive. If you’re thinking of applying for a scholarship or bursary for your child, here’s what you need to know.
What is a bursary?
How to apply for a scholarship
A bursary is a financial assistance offered at the school’s discretion. The school will determine the amount of fee reduction and award eligibility criteria. Bursaries are often awarded to students already enrolled at the school who need short- or long-term fee help but may also be available to external students who meet the school’s eligibility criteria.
There are no set rules to determine how a school awards its scholarships. Generally, but not always, you can expect the process to include an interview and an exam. Details of your preferred school’s scholarship application process can be found on their website or by contacting the school direct.
Scholarship exams
Applications for bursaries are made directly with the school. Contact your preferred school or visit their website for details.
Many private high schools use an external scholarship exam facilitator. ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research), Edutest and AAS (Academic Assessment Services) all provide scholarship entry tests and exams for Brisbane schools. Queensland scholarship exams are usually sat in late February or early March. If applying for an academic scholarship they will test your child’s ability to interpret, infer, deduce and think critically. Different criteria may apply if your child is looking to attain a cultural (e.g. musical excellence) or sporting scholarship. There is a fee of around $100 per test and you can test for more than one school. Registrations are open now. You can help your child prepare for the entry exam by downloading past test papers and practice papers from the relevant website. For more information visit www.acer.edu.au/scholarship and www.edutest.com.au
What is a scholarship? A scholarship is an award that offers a student the opportunity to attain a place at a school they might otherwise be unable to afford. With a scholarship, some or all of the school fees may be covered. Obtaining a scholarship is in part determined by how well your child does in scholarship entry exam, but they can also be awarded for cultural and sporting excellence. Since eligibility, financial assistance offered, length of support and the number of scholarships available vary significantly between schools, you will need to ask each school for the exact details about their scholarships program.

Gold Coast Family Weekend Fun!
We partnered with Destination Gold Coast to spend a gorgeous three-day weekend in Australia’s favourite playground. How lucky we are here in Brisbane to have this internationally renowned holiday destination right on our doorstep. Without the challenge of an international flight we found ourselves in one of the best holiday destinations in the world. Having an 8- and 10-year old meant that we needed to balance their need for entertainment with Mum and Dad’s need to relax. Here’s how we managed it.
The Royal Palm Resort We were hosted by The Royal Palm Resort at Palm Beach. Location is key when you have little ones in tow, and this resort has a prime beachfront location. Lugging all the kit to the beach is painful so we loved that the beach was right there. The Resort has many family friendly activities and my family had an enormous amount of fun playing tennis and mini-golf. The crystal clear 33 metre lagoon-style pool was thoroughly enjoyed, as was the slide the kids indulged in over and over. While the kids were entertaining themselves, we parents had time to relax in the spa and lie with our books poolside in one of the gazebos. Heaven. The apartments at Royal Palm Resort have had a modern makeover and are stylish and spacious. The hotel caters for families who like to bring their own food and cook, with apartments having a complete kitchen. As we were so close to a number of great restaurants, we decided to really treat ourselves and eat out for every meal.
Frida Sol is great for families who have fussy eaters, as they can provide toppings in separate side dishes if your children prefer to have food elements separately. My daughter is normally somewhat fussy about what she eats, refusing black beans for example, but at Frida Sol she ate everything that came her way. It looked so appetising she could not resist it, and even ate those black beans while smacking her lips in satisfaction. Amazing!
Good Food and Good Vibes at Frida Sol
Beaches and Surfing
If you love Mexican, you will fall head over heels in love with the food at Frida Sol. This is a great restaurant for families as they have a kid’s menu rocking nachos and tacos and provide colouring in for the kids to keep them entertained while their food is prepared.
No matter where you turn on the Gold Coast you are bound to end up at a beach. We made our way to Greenmount Beach and met Dan from Walkin’ on Water Surf School who provided us with a surfing lesson. The kids were beside themselves with excitement at learning to surf, as they had never before been on a surfboard.
We ordered tacos (braised beef, pulled pork, and one crispy cauliflower) and the best chilli con carne nachos I’ve ever eaten.

The generosity of the serving size, and the fact that each dish is mild made this the perfect place to feast with our children. My husband was delighted with the hot sauces found on our table, so he could spice up his own plate.
After 20 minutes of practicing how to stand and manoeuvre a

surfboard, everyone headed into the water to begin surfing. I have to say I was amazed at how quickly the children actually stood up and rode small waves. It was incredibly impressive and a testament to Dan’s excellent teaching. Two hours after we arrived the lesson was over my son immediately asked if he could have surfing lessons every week now (we live in Brisbane…) and my daughter just grinned from ear to ear. This is such a brilliant activity for families to do as parents will enjoy this as much as their kids. Share a laugh and challenge with your kids and learn to surf together.
Ice-Cream and More Food As every parent knows, a day at the beach must be accompanied by gelato! If you have not tried the gelato available at Gelato Messina at Coolangatta (they have stores in other areas too) you are missing out. My daughter had the Apple Pie flavour, which really does taste exactly like a delicious apple pie (how do they do that?) I went for the peanut butter chunks in chocolate flavour and just about wept with happiness. Honestly, if you have not tired Gelato Messina you need to do so. As surfing makes one work up an appetite (even if one is just photographing and filming others surfing – ha!), we ate at The Collective on Saturday night. The Collective opened in 2016 and is a collection of five kitchens serving up American, Italian, Mexican, Asian and contemporary Australian dishes. The Collective must have been dreamt up by parents who could no longer
endure the arguing of children when trying to decide what to eat. Here you are given a tablet and you select the dishes you want from any kitchen. It made for a relaxing evening as my daughter could order Japanese dishes (her favourite) while my son could order Italian food (his favourite) and there was no arguing. We chose handmade ramen noodles and duck pancakes from the Japanese kitchen, gnocchi from the Italian kitchen, and zucchini flowers and pork belly bites from the modern Australian kitchen. The food was spectacular and we could see why The Collective was pumping with large groups of young adults celebrating birthdays and special events. While I’m on the subject of food, let me tell you about Dune Café which is situated in the Palm Beach Parklands, overlooking the beautiful Currumbin lagoon. We walked out the back gate of our hotel and followed the walkway to this popular café. Dune café is exactly the kind of place families are looking for; eat your breakfast or lunch while the kids run around on the large lawn in front of you or play 100 metres away in the Pirate Playground. We parents ate delicious bacon and eggs while the children devoured blueberry pancakes. After breakfast we wandered over the lawn to the enclosed canal where dogs of all kinds were frolicking with their owners. The whole area has a beautifully relaxed vibe and the kids made sand castles and paddled in the water. The canal is perfect for small children who may prefer shallow still water to the beach, but if your kids love the ocean you can simply take a few steps more and hit the beach.

Arts, Culture and Attractions We were lucky when we visited the Southern Gold Coast that the 10-day SWELL Sculpture Festival was on. SWELL transforms the glorious setting of Currumbin Beach, turning it into a natural art gallery with over 52 sculptures. Despite being in its 17th year, it was the first year that the festival had a dedicated kids section, called SWELL Kids Elements. Families will find many fun things to do at the festival and in the kids section. Our children played with balls and engaged with other children, read books, coloured in, did drawings, and wandered through art installations. For $15, children can also make clay turtle hatchlings, make a wire sculpture, or etch out a story on a clay tablet. Importantly for families there are shady spots with bean bags to relax on, so you can carve out some down time. There is something sublime about walking along a beautiful beach with stunning scenery and coming across thought-provoking sculptures. The children loved the whole experience and felt free to roam and explore as everything was outside. The SWELL Sculpture Festival is a free public event that should not be missed. An icon on the Gold Coast, loved by tourists and local alike, is Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. This gorgeous sanctuary, situated within 27 hectares of Currumbin rainforest, is a rite of passage for all Queensland kids.
We love Currumbin Sanctuary because families can see Australian wildlife, enjoy a range of shows (including the excellent Wild Skies Free Flight Bird Show), visit the wildlife hospital, ride the trains across the sanctuary and join with local and international visitors to feed the Lorikeet’s that arrive every day at 8am and 4pm. Such a fun way to begin or end the day, and one that children will always remember. My family had an amazing three days on the Southern Gold Coast that included excellent food, beautiful accommodation with stunning views, beaches, surfing, art, culture and attractions. For families, Australia’s favourite playground has an enormous amount to offer. Every day of every year there are phenomenal beaches and canals, exceptional restaurants, and exciting attractions. In addition, at certain times of the year particular events pop up to inspire, delight and amaze. Upcoming family events on the Southern Gold Coast include: Cooly Rocks On - 3-7 June 2020 Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival - August 2020 Buskers By the Creek - October 2020 Read the full article online at www.familiesmagazine.com.au/ destination-gold-coast-family-weekend With thanks to Amanda Mergler and her family and Destination Gold Coast
