Contents WELCOME TO OUR BACK TO SCHOOL ISSUE! Shocking news! I’ve decided to home school. This has nothing to do with my minor breakdown in a major office and stationery warehouse where I attempted to teach two children how to compare the prices of products and assess their value against the quality of the good. Oh no. Because that encounter was a lesson in expectation vs reality for me, not the children. In that ‘incident’ we discovered they have a secret ‘public’ bathroom at the back of the building and someone nearby has a severe tummy bug. So now I’m home-schooling - goodbye booklists! Obviously I won’t be teaching them myself - nearly impossible. I’ve developed a new program called “Google Home schooling”. You see my partner was given a Google Home device through work and we installed it in the kitchen because we care naught for privacy - just ask the neighbours! If the local neighbourhood can hear me yelling “PICK THAT UP!”, why not a global corporation and international governments?

Google Home is an internet-connected device that can interact with smart tv’s, other technology and is voice-operated - so easy even a child can use it. And they do. If you are feeling worn down from the holiday period and exasperated in the face of prepping for the new school year you need to hear this: even Google Home can’t handle the relentless force of a child’s questioning. “What is the weather today?” “Where are my socks?” “Who does mum love more??” Eventually, Google just stopped listening to my kids as well: “Google, play baby shark”. “Sure, Amy Shark coming up…”

Why you should take the kids to the Theatre! Have you ever taken the kids to see a live theatre performance? If not, you should! Live theatre benefits kids in lots of ways, from social enjoyment of fabulously presented kids shows, to scientifically proven developmental advantages (yes, seriously!). If you’ve never considered taking your children to live theatre, here are some benefits to consider, as well as tips for parents to survive that all-important first theatre outing!
Live theatre is interactive! It’s a rare child who has never been to the cinema, but cinema seldom invites audience participation. If you have a child who struggles to sit still or quiet through a movie, you will find you are far less likely to get shushed or tutted at the theatre. Children’s theatre is often an interactive experience, especially when aimed at younger audiences. Performers are there to entertain and they love nothing better than to hear your kids squealing with laughter, participating in calling out responses (“He’s behind you!”) and singing along to favourite songs, and
children may be invited on stage to join in for some scenes too. Children’s theatre is high energy, engaging and a totally different experience to cinema.
Live theatre fuels the imagination Children’s books use colourful pictures to help your child visualise the story as it is told. Imagine those pictures coming to life with movement, energy and sound - how much BIGGER does their understanding of the story become! When children experience a live theatre performance they are immersed into a multi-sensory world that sparks their imagination. Your children become part of something big, real and exciting!

Live theatre helps children develop emotional intelligence This is one of the scientifically proven bits. Research by University College London shows those who attend live theatre together will synchronise their heart rates, which creates a sense of connection and attachment and strengthens family bonds.
Live theatre promotes reading Children’s theatre shows are often adapted from children’s books. If your child is a reluctant reader, an engaging and enjoyable live performance can often be all the inspiration your child needs to seek other works by the same author or of the same genre. Authors whose work is often brought to the stage include David Walliams, Roald Dahl, Mem Fox and Andy Griffiths. Other popular stage adaptations include well-loved stories like The Gruffalo’s Child and The Owl and The Pussycat, and even movies take on a whole new life with School of Rock and Shrek appearing live on Brisbane’s stages. When children develop a love of reading, they develop a greater understanding of language, which in turn leads to improved performance at school as they can better understand tasks set and articulate results. Live theatre benefits kids academically!
6
A study by the University of Arkansas found that when primary and secondary school pupils are exposed to live theatre experiences it “increases student tolerance by providing exposure to a broader, more diverse world, and improves the ability of students to recognise what other people are thinking or feeling.” When a performance covers a difficult topic such as bullying, loss, or feeling ‘different’, seeing these experiences played out live on stage can help children access unfamiliar emotions and develop a deeper understanding of - and empathy for - others. A live performance can often open up the opportunity for discussion based on the characters’ situation and how it might relate to our own experiences.
Live theatre benefits communication Actors on stage portray a range of characters and emotions through voice, expression and gesture. To children they seem so much more real and believable than characters in the twodimensional world of screens, enabling the child to form a bond or connection with the characters. By observing how a ‘real’ person acts, moves and behaves on stage, children can learn how to express themselves and communicate more effectively. Attending

Parenting KID-FRIENDLY THEATRES ACROSS BRISBANE live theatre benefits kids by helping to reduce the frustration of miscommunication.
Live theatre is a great night out! Comedy, drama, musical or pantomime, professional or amateur dramatics; whatever you see and wherever you see it live children’s theatre is a great family experience. Performers on a stage communicate with the audience in a way that cinema and television can not replicate. The audience is welcomed and drawn in to the live theatre performance, and leaves with a sense of unique shared experience.
Hints and tips to survive your child’s first theatre outing Your child’s first theatre experience can be both exciting and emotional for parent and child alike – here’s a handy list to help make your experience a great one! • Choose the right show for your child. You want to make sure it’s age appropriate, but also that they’ll enjoy it. Make sure you know what your child likes and dislikes, and what they can and cannot handle. If you’ve got a squirmer or a crier, it may be a good idea to wait a while. Some family friendly shows can also include scary scenes, so do your research. • P repare your child for their new experience. Help them to become familiar with the story of the show they’re going to see. Show them songs or videos beforehand, and tell them about the role of the conductor and the orchestra if you’re going to be seeing a musical or a ballet. Make sure you explain to them that a live theatre show isn’t like TV or a movie – they’ll be watching real live people on stage. Finally, teach them about the kind of behaviour that’s expected from them in the theatre. • Choose the matinee performance. It’s the best time of day for children, and the performance will finish before their bed time. • Plan for a quick getaway. Make sure you book aisle seats in case you need to leave quickly. You can never predict how your kids will react to the start of a play or musical, so it’s best to be prepared! • Turn up at least 30 minutes prior to the show. This way, you can make the necessary toilet trips and settle your kids down before the show starts. • Bring quiet snacks and drinks. • Make use of the intervals. Make any necessary toilet trips and talk to your kids about what they’ve just seen. HOW TO TALK TO CHILDREN ABOUT BUSHFIRES What Parents and Teacher can do to help
Even if you haven’t been directly impacted by bushfire, your children or students may have seen images on the news and social media that have caused them anxiety. They may have friends or family living in bushfire affected areas that they have been worried about, or concerns about their own vulnerability and local bushfire risk. This concern is quite natural and understandable, and your child might need a little help processing the emotions they are feeling. Here are some things you can do to help.
TALKING TO CHILDREN ABOUT BUSHFIRES 1. Take note Your child might not speak to you directly about bushfires, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t communicating. Signs of anxiety to look out for are: • changes to behaviour • increased clinginess • sleeplessness • lack of appetite • nightmares • irritability • sudden stomach aches or other physical complaints • lack of interest in favourite activities • withdrawal 2. Ask questions Your child might not feel comfortable opening a conversation about their concerns. For some children that might be because they don’t want to worry you, but others simply might not know how to. Take the lead with gentle questions; ask them to describe how they are feeling and if they can tell you why they are feeling that way. If they aren’t ready to talk to you yet, that’s ok – let them know that you will be available and ready when they are. 3. Let them express their feelings If your child isn’t ready to verbalise how they feel, they might be able to express
8
how they feel in other ways. Offer the opportunity for them to draw a picture of what they are thinking about, or act out their feelings indirectly using toys, and let that be the way to open a conversation. 4. Validate their feelings This could be the first big crisis your child has experienced, and as such they might not know what they are expected to feel. Let them know that whatever they are feeling is ok, and that they are not alone – lots of others will be feeling just the same way. Whatever they are feeling – anger, sadness, or nothing at all – is the correct response for them. 5. Reassure Tell your child that you love them and that everyone is doing everything they can to keep them safe. Let them know that you have a plan in case of emergency, and – if age appropriate – discuss that plan with them so that they know what their role will be. Be honest in answering any questions they might have whilst remaining mindful of their level of anxiety, and if you don’t know the answer, investigate together. 6. Model resilience Resilience is the capacity to bounce back after hardship. Be honest with your child and explain that life is mainly good but now and then everyone has a difficult or unhappy time. When times are difficult, it’s important to stay hopeful and expect things to get better. Show your child the things that haven’t changed – their home
Your Local Families Magazine February / March 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
or school, their friends, their routine etc. – and help them to understand that although some things might always be different, life will return to normal and be good again. 7. Offer positives Share with your child the good news. Anywhere that disaster strikes, there will be helpers. Talk to your children about the Rural Fire Service, water bombers and SES volunteers, the wildlife rescuers helping to heal injured wildlife, and the charities making sure that everyone has something to eat and a place to stay. This is a good time to show them how resilient nature can be, and how forests are already regenerating with new growth. Communities come together in times of crises, and this crisis has shown that we are part of a huge global community with help coming in from around the world. Let them know that help is there for everyone who needs it. 8. Let them help too By finding ways children can help, you can help them process their feelings positively. Ask your child who they would like to help, and how they would like to do it. Your child could fundraise by selling things they don’t want anymore, or by asking friends and family to sponsor them with a challenge. If you have an older child and a sewing machine, they can help by making pouches for injured wildlife. Turning feelings of helplessness into helpfulness will show your child that they, too, can make a difference.

Is Everyone Ready For Prep? - WHEN OLDER SIBLINGS START SCHOOL The first week of term one across Australia, thousands of new preppies burst into classrooms, ready for prep with their crisp uniforms, fresh packed lunches, and big smiles. They have benefited from orientation opportunities and been read books such as “The Kissing Hand” and “Amelia Bedelia’s First Day at School” to help prepare them. Parents are likely equally keen to see the school year start; their cognitive loads brimming with having organised uniforms, downloaded the Tuck Shop App, and attended ample parent information evenings.
Is everyone ready for prep? Everyone ready?! Let’s go …… oh …. wait … maybe there’s someone in your family who wasn’t so ready for the start of school? Your beautiful preppie’s little brother or sister, who may have been overlooked in the organisational rush, might not be as ready for the sudden absence of their big sister or big brother after all? It’s a big change in their life too, when older siblings start school. I had anticipated that my sons would miss each other in response to the Prep start, but if you’ve had a similar first week to me, I was caught off guard by the magnitude of loss my boys appeared to experience. One in Kindy, the other at Prep; the first day saw them rush to hug each other as if they’d been separated for years. Collaborative play replaced their normal WWE antics, and suddenly Kindy-on-his-own brought unexpected bottom lip quivers. I realised that I had spent almost all my time preparing my older son and myself for the start of school without spending enough time making sure his little brother was equally prepared.
10

Parenting Celebrate each other Teach your children to consider and celebrate each other. Social skills don’t come naturally, they need to be taught and modelled. This may sound like wondering out aloud how each child is doing; “It’s your sisters first day at school, I wonder how she is feeling?” or “I bet your brother is missing you at Kindy today”, or “let’s remember to ask your brother how his day went today”. Or, “starting school is a huge transition, what’s something nice we could organise for your sister when she gets home this afternoon?” Have a relaxed Friday dinner, like a pizza picnic in the lounge room floor, to collectively celebrate the first week.
Make a photo book of their relationship This could include pics of their most recent Christmas holiday or their developing friendship over the years. Family photos are often welcomed in both preschool and prep rooms. Sibling photos can also be made into key rings and bag tags, etc.
Joint extra-curricular activities Longer term, consider joint extra-curricular activities, like family martial arts, sports, art groups, etc.
Helping younger siblings cope when older siblings start school Make time for play around the school day I made a few temporary changes based on their needs, such as letting go of story time to let them play quietly together before bedtime. It won’t be forever, but it was needed in the now.
Clear the first couple of weekends Create space for exclusive sibling time. The activity doesn’t matter, but organising something for just siblings to engage in – fishing, mini-golf, a day out – where they don’t have to compete with other relationships can be beneficial.
Preparing your younger child before their older sibling starts school For next year’s prep siblings, taking an inclusive approach to discussing what school commencement will mean for the youngest members of the family, and visiting their big brother’s or sister’s new school during the orientation period can help prepare them and get everyone ready for Prep. Understand the biggest emotions that you may be supporting are those of the youngest members of your family when your eldest goes off to Prep. Some pre-schoolers may show temporary behaviour changes and/or need increased reassurance.
Books can help. Try these titles: • Martha and the Bunny Brothers by Clara Vulliamy • The Invisible String by Patrice Karst
Take opportunities for sibling togetherness If you’ve separated out bedtime schedules, such as reading time or bath times, consider reintegrating these. Letting them camp out on each other’s bedroom floors on the weekend may help too. Include your pre-schooler in your preppies day If schedules permit, involve your younger kids in drop off and allow them to play for a short period in the Prep playground before school. Or similarly, take your preppie to daycare pick up and let them play in their old environment together.
• The Berenstain Bears Go to School by Jan Berenstain • Peppa Pig: George’s First Day at Playgroup by Ladybird However, a better idea may be making a personalised photo book that captures both or all of your children in their new environments to help them understand the changes ahead. “Is Everyone Ready For Prep” is a guest post from Dr Rachell Kingsbury – Guidance Counsellor (Clin. Psych & Clin. Neuropsych MAPS) and mum of two boys.

School Catchments How to Find Out Which Catchment You Are In School catchment areas refer to the geographical location, determined by specific boundaries, where the majority of enrolled state school students must live. Every student, from Prep to Year 12, will find that they are automatically within the school catchment zone for a particular school. Here’s what you need to know about finding yours.
Why do we have school catchment areas?
Catchments and zones can change
School catchment areas are in place so each child is guaranteed a place at a local state school. State primary schools and state high schools will each have their own individual catchment areas.
When new schools open, catchments are adjusted to form a new equidistant boundary with the old school. If your child is already enrolled at a school before the boundary changes you do not have to switch schools unless you choose to. Younger siblings can also generally enrol at the same school as their older siblings provided they remain living within the school’s former catchment.
School catchment areas can also ensure that equitable amounts of government funding are sent to the right places. That ensures that the area will be adequately serviced by school buses and that appropriate safety measures, like school crossings and guards, are correctly distributed. As your child will automatically be enrolled in your local state school all you will need to do to confirm your interest is to fill out an application form and provide proof of residency. This might mean you show a rates notice, a tenancy agreement or bills that demonstrate you are the property occupier within the zone boundaries.
What if I don’t like my catchment school? It is possible to enrol your child at a state school outside of your designated school catchment area, but you will be put on a wait list to ensure that local children get places first. If this is your situation, we recommend you get your application in sooner rather than later so you are towards the top of the waiting list. You might secure enrolment if: • You apply early
Because catchments can change, it is a good idea to check yours periodically (particularly if you are in an area that has new schools being built) to see if you are affected.
How to find your school catchment area The Department of Education and Training map will allow you to scroll over school catchment zones until you find your street. Primary and secondary school catchments are different and are shown in different colours – be aware that primary school catchments are much smaller than high school ones.

Education Tip Two: The Night Before The night before, do everything that can be done to prepare for the morning. Lay out the school uniform, make packed lunches, sort snacks, check all homework and sports kit are where they should be. Make showers/baths and hair washes part of the night-time routine, rather than obstacles to overcome in the morning.
Tip One: The Crucial 10 Minutes Why not get up 10 minutes earlier? This will give you a chance to grab a cup of tea or coffee, have a shower and get dressed in less of a rush than usual. Being up 10 minutes earlier also gives you a fair chance of making sure both you and your children are ready 10 minutes before you have to leave. This will give you time to gather your thoughts and make sure you have everything. No more rushing out of the door and rushing back to pick up forgotten items!
Tip Five: Use Devices
FIVE TIPS TO DE-STRESS GETTING TO SCHOOL Children don’t understand time in the same way as adults. This can make school mornings a stressful time of day for parents. Here are five tips to that may help make things a little easier.
Set reminders on your phone for special tasks such as remembering to give your child signed permission slips or leaving early for a school club. Think about an alarm for children who struggle to wake up. Set a timer for tasks such as 15 minutes to eat breakfast or 5 minutes for showering, so that you can keep your children on schedule.
14
Your Local Families Magazine February / March 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Tip Three: Have a Checklist Either write an actual checklist for your child’s school morning routine, or just verbally repeat the jobs they are expected to do until they remember them. A checklist could include: eating breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth and hair, packing lunch and water bottle, putting on shoes and coat. It’s good to have a plan of their weekly school routine somewhere handy too so that you know when school library books are due back, which day is swimming or games and so on.
Tip Four: Provide a Pay Off Give kids an incentive so that if they finish their school morning routine early they are rewarded with some time for television, reading or something they would like to do before school.

NAVIGATING
THE SCHOOL ZONE how to keep everyone safe With increasing traffic volume, school enrolments at capacity, and just the general morning rush, navigating the school zone at drop-off and pick-up can be a hazard that even Indiana Jones would shy from. Knowing the rules and having a few tricks up your sleeve can help.
School zones – the rules School zones are installed to reduce traffic speed near schools during the times indicated in the school zone sign. School zones are identified by signs which are displayed on both approaches to the school and show the speed limit and the times during which it applies. School zone times have been standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down. The standard operating times for school zones in the Brisbane and greater Brisbane area is 7–9am and 2–4pm, with split-campus schools (on opposite sides of a road) running from 7am–4pm. When driving through a school zone you must reduce your speed to the limit displayed – usually 40kph – or lower if conditions require. Fines apply for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone within its designated times.
Why do we have school zones? Children are at risk around school areas because they are small, can’t be easily seen by drivers, are more prone to running, have difficulty judging vehicle speeds and gaps, and have poorer perceptive skills than adults. School zones are designed to alert drivers to the presence of children and to allow children safe access to the school’s grounds.
Keeping children safe in school zones – tips for motorists School zones are very busy areas and drivers can easily become distracted. Parking spots are hotly contested, and when traffic is bumper-tobumper, manoeuvring into a newly vacated space can be tricky. Remember to SLOW down:
Slow your speed; things can change quickly in a school zone and you need to be ready to react.
20
Look for hazards; the child who has let go of Mum’s hand and is running to greet friends.
Observe the rules; don’t stop in a no-standing zone or block a crossing etc.
Your Local Families Magazine February / March 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Wait; be patient – you know that you’ll soon be on your way again, and impatience creates its own hazards.
Education Keeping children safe in school zones – tips for parents and caregivers
chat with other parents and teachers, or to quickly jump out and run your child over to the gate. For the sake of those waiting their turn behind you, make sure your child has their bag in their lap and is ready to exit the car as soon as it’s your turn.
SET A GOOD EXAMPLE – It’s tempting as a grown-up to cut through queued traffic and dash through gaps to cross the road, but your child isn’t capable of making the same judgement calls. Model ‘safety-first’ behaviour by always crossing at designated crossing places and following the directions of the crossing patrol personnel.
TEACH AWARENESS – If your child travels to school independently, teach them to be aware of their environment. Wearing headphones, for example, can be distracting and prevent your child from hearing oncoming traffic or warnings.
CROSSING RULES – If there is no designated crossing patrol, show your child how to choose a safe place to cross and practice the rules – Stop! Look! Listen! Think!
Stop! One step back from the kerb and away from parked
vehicles. Make sure you have a clear view of the road
Look! Continuously look both ways for approaching traffic Listen! For approaching vehicles Think! Is it safe to cross? If the road is clear in both directions
and there is no traffic approaching, cross carefully while continuing to look left and right and listen for traffic until you safely reach the other side.
PLAN YOUR APPROACH – You can avoid the need to cross the road entirely by approaching the school from the other direction. A detour around the block might add a few minutes to your day, but you’ll have easier access to safe drop-off points. THE ‘SAFE SIDE’ – When pulling into a drop-off zone or parking space, make sure your children get out of the car on the ‘safe side’ – that’s the side nearest the footpath, not into the road. KISS AND GO – It’s just that! The drop-off zone – or Kiss and Go – is designed to keep traffic flowing. It’s not the place to pull over for a
If your child has to walk through a car park, make sure they are alert for reversing vehicles. Drivers in car parks can often be more focussed on finding a spot than on spotting pedestrians. CROSS THE ROAD – When collecting your child at the end of the school day, always meet them on the school side of the road. Calling out to your child from across the road may cause them to run into the traffic to meet you. MAKE A PLAN – Plan ahead and tell your child exactly where you will be waiting for them at the end of the day, and what they should do if you are running late, i.e. to wait with a teacher or in the school office until they can be collected.
Practice School Zone Safety Back-to-school is a bustling time, and if your child is just starting prep or transitioning to a new school, it may take a little practice to get to know the layout and routine of your school zone. Make a trial run before the school term begins to get an idea of the normal traffic volume at drop-off and pick-up times, and factor in an additional time allowance for the increased volume on school days. Make sure to take note of where the school zone begins and ends, road signs and markings, available parking and potential hazards, and plan for a safe and organised school run. www.familiesmagazine.com.au/school-zone-safety
