WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY HEALTH, BUMPS & BABIES ISSUE! I dunno about y’all but I keep our GP saved under ‘favourites’ on my phone. With three kids in primary school I’ve learnt to keep a recurring monthly booking because at least one child needs a check up/referral/medical confirmation they are not dying of boredom. Here is a list of the nonsense we dealt with THIS YEAR ALONE: • ENT operation for youngest child, just as we signed him up for swimming lessons

Here are some hot tips if you are planning an emergency room/hospital stay (always be prepared!). Pack a sealed thermos and your own tea bags so you can have a cup of tea while waiting for the doctor. Keep your child’s homework in your bag so they have something to do while you watch movies on your phone. Tap into the Wi-Fi immediately and tag yourself at hospital for max sympathy and then imply you are there for an infected tattoo (to create controversy). As always, prevention is better than cure with family health, but if you have already HAD your family, review our magazine for some advice and recommendations.

MIDDLE SCHOOL… BY A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER
So, let’s be transparent and discuss the challenges for our eager Middle School students. A respected colleague of mine once described Middle School as an onion (without the need for crying when it is peeled of course) but more to illustrate the number of layers that can be faced when moving into Middle School, these are those challenges.
T H E P H YS I CA L L AY E R The excitement of entering Middle School fills the air on the first day, with crisp clean shoes and perfectly ironed uniforms filling our welcoming space. I love this moment, although in the busyness of the first day of school, I remind myself to take a moment to stop and watch as these students become part of our community for the first time.
CURIOUS, INDEPENDENCE A N D F U N A R E WO R D S T H AT I N S TA N T LY CO M E TO M I N D. Middle School has the potential to be the best years of a child’s life. This junction between primary and senior school typically brings with it a perfect balance of a curious mind, a thirst for learning and a desire to explore. Middle School provides opportunities for students to start to personalise their learning journey with light at the end of their education tunnel to achieve their dreams in what they call ‘the real world’. The importance of a child’s Middle School experience should not be glanced over, nor should the impact that teachers have. Middle School holds a huge responsibility and as a leader of our Middle School, this is a responsibility I am acutely aware of. We have a responsibility to ensure students have a settled transition from primary school, to ensure academic engagement and keep the curiosity to learn alive, to ensure social acceptance and belongingness and that the stage has been set for students as they move into Senior School and beyond (just to name a few). A highlight of my job is the transition process of students graduating primary school and preparing to start Middle School at Grace College. While their Year 6 primary school teachers are preparing graduation ceremonies, we are investing a lot of time and careful thought into transition activities for our incoming Year 7 students. Everything is important and purposeful – not only the activities we choose to have but also how they are delivered. I love this part of my job, the wonder and anticipation of moving into Middle School is a joy to witness on the faces of both the students and the parents. But it is this moment too, that reminds me of how much responsibility and trust they are placing on us to make Middle School the best years of their child’s life. Every decision and connection in this process is critical. Now, I have said that Middle School is exciting, important and has much responsibility, but I know firsthand that Middle School isn’t always easy for students. I will be the first to admit that the Middle School years come with challenges. In Middle School, we are encouraging independence within a supportive environment and we are encouraging failure (can you believe I said that…) so that we are developing resilience, perseverance and growing from it.
8
Before long the first layer of the onion is exposed – the physical layer. The Middle School environment requires students to decode timetables, access lockers using combination locks, read maps to find the location of their next classroom, interact with many different teachers daily, remember what books are required for what lessons, ensure laptops are charged and learn new bell times. That’s all after waking up and remembering which uniform should be worn that day. Yes, these are challenges, but these take place in a supportive environment. An intentional Middle School precinct allows students to have a sense of physical belongingness until they feel ready to explore further. Many schools use a system of buddies which allows year 7 students to have contact with older, friendly, familiar faces as they move around the College. A core class teacher model is a steady transition from a primary school environment to a middle school environment where the number of teachers to connect with increases.
T H E CU R R I CU LUM STA RT I N G P O I N T L AY E R We are a 7-12 College. As such, we are blessed to have Year 7 students enrolling from up to approximately 45 primary schools every year. This provides many opportunities but also challenges for our curriculum and consequently our teachers. We acknowledge that every student is unique and has their own ‘starting point’ when they arrive. Teachers use a variety of teaching strategies (including screening and pre-testing) to ensure the teaching and learning is targeted at the needs of the students who are sitting in their classrooms. We know we need to be attuned to what is happening in our nearby primary schools to understand where our students are coming from and to target our curriculum accordingly to ensure the transition is an integrated step rather than a blind leap.
E N G AG E M E N T L AY E R Middle School can have the reputation of being the time where students put themselves into neutral and coast along until when they think it ‘counts’ in the senior years. A purposeful and meaningful curriculum design ensures that the perfect balance of a curious mind, thirst for learning and the desire to explore is maintained. How do we do this? It requires a wide variety of elective subjects so students can personalise in their learning pathway to align with their gifts and talents. Academic Enrichment programs allow students to be involved in opportunities such as Excellence/Compacted Courses. Equally,
Your Local Families Magazine April / May 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Education A strong camp and outdoor education culture can provide not only a varied educational experience but also a tangible purpose of fostering and building relationships. These positive and productive connections contribute to the overall learning community which is integral to the success of students on their Middle School journey.
PA R E N TS – I T I S YO U R TU R N Let us not ignore the challenge for the parents/guardians of Middle School students – the challenge to allow your child to relish in their newfound independence. To take the foot off the pedal and stand on the sideline as your cheer on your child to achieving their goals. Please know, this doesn’t lessen the importance of your role as a parent, it is just a new phase. So, how can you help your child transition into Middle School? Learning Support allow students to be well supported through the challenges of Middle School to ensure accessibility and progress. Just as every student is unique, a one size fits all approach to student engagement simply won’t work. It takes a variety of intentional and effective approaches in both the curriculum design and the teaching and learning in the classroom to ensure students are engaged and achieving to their potential.
R E L AT I O N S H I P S L AY E R The Middle School years can be challenging when it comes to the social landscape. Research tells us that it is these years that can be the most influential for a child when it comes to them asking the question, “Who Am I?” It has also been suggested that this is the time students are seeking positive role models extending beyond parents, including teachers, coaches, mentors etc. Opportunities for students to find the positive role model or influencer needs to made available through various avenues – class teachers, co-curricular coaches/instructors, buddy systems and appropriate school-appointed mentors.
• Be optimistic and encouraging about the transition to Middle School • Guide students to develop the skills of independence and responsibility • Encourage your child to get involved in activities within the school community • Talk to your Middle Schooler – stay involved, talk about concerns and collaborate strategies together • Celebrate Progress – be proud of every step they make Middle School is witness to remarkable growth and change in a student from Year 7 to 9. With increased opportunities for Middle School students, there is much to get excited about. This is why I love my job. SLEEP TIPS . . . . z z z z z z z . . . . FOR TWEENS & z.... z z TEENS... z z z zz
t's sleep...
zzzz zz
Does your teenager get enough sleep to feel great and pay attention in school? If you're child is a typical teen, chances are they don't...
zz z
. . . . z z z z zzz
Sleep research suggests that a teenager needs between eight and 10 hours of sleep every night, yet most adolescents only get about 6.5–7.5 hours’ sleep per night, and some get less. Inadequate sleep can have dramatic effects on a teenager’s life, impacting their cognitive functioning, academic achievement, and increasing their risk of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. In adolescence, sleep drive, or feeling the need to sleep, shifts later and later, meaning that they feel more wakeful and less able to fall asleep until later hours. So how do you prevent your teens from being sleep deprived? Try not to argue with your teenager about bedtime. Instead, discuss the issue with them. Together, brainstorm ways to increase their nightly quota of sleep.
Here are 7 effective tips to getting your sleep deprived teen to sleep better:
1
Limit screens in the bedroom Decide together on appropriate time limits for any stimulating activity such as homework or screen time. Encourage your teenager to have at least 30 minutes of screen-free time before going to sleep.
2
Having screens in the bedroom also means your teen is more likely to stay up late interacting with friends on social media. If possible, don’t have a mobile, tablet, TV or computer in the bedroom at night, as the light from the screen interferes with sleep.
10
Your Local Families Magazine April / May 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Get your teen to “chill out” before bedtime If your teen is frequently stressed out, recommend that they do yoga or meditation to help them ease their racing thoughts. Going to bed worried decreases the quality of their sleep, so recommend relaxation techniques for your teen. If they have a problem relaxing, then the issue should be checked out by a doctor.
Family Health

Create a sleep-friendly bedroom Ensure your teenager has a good sleeping environment – ideally a room that is dark, cool, quiet and comfortable. It might be worth investing in thicker curtains or a blackout blind to help block out early summer mornings and light evenings. When your teen gets up on school days, encourage them to open their shades, and turn on the light. The early light of day helps to “reset” their brain to push their bedtime to an earlier hour.
Have a consistent bedtime routine Just like babies and young children, teenagers benefit from having a consistent bedtime routine. Encourage your child to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Try to limit sleep-ins during weekends to only about one extra hour. For example, if bedtime is normally 9:00 pm (a good bedtime for a teen who wakes up at 6:00 am), then have weekend bedtime be 10:00 pm and let your teen sleep until about 7:00 am.
Take a hot bath or shower before bed to boost deep sleep. Studies show a hot shower or bath before bed causes drowsiness because we feel sleepy as our body temperature drops. For the same reason, keep your teen’s room cool but not cold (about 20°c) overnight.
6
Eat a light-carb snack before bed Encourage your child to have a snack before bedtime, such as cereal, crackers, fruit, or toast with jam. Lightcarb snacks like these can make a teen feel sleepy while a hungry belly can prevent falling off to sleep.
. . . zz.
z z z zzzzz....zz zzz.... z z z z zzz
7
Limit caffeine intake This one might seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes teens forget that caffeine can be hidden in some of their favourite drinks and snacks. Make sure to get your teen into the habit of monitoring caffeine intake throughout the day. If they’re craving something hot to drink, then recommend a warm cup of herbal tea. One or two strong cups of herbal tea can help them mellow out. Sleep Tips for Tweens and Teens is a guest post by Angela Zaugg, Our Lady’s College, Annerley. www.ourladyscollege.qld.edu.au

BABY’S FIRST FOODS
Introducing Solids
A common point of confusion for parents and carers is when to introduce first foods (or solids) to infants. In this article, we are going to clear up some of the myths by introducing you to the latest Infant Feeding Guidelines. These national guidelines look at all the latest research and use it to create clear evidence-based guidelines which provide consistent advice for the public and promoting optimum nutrition to infants. For infants, breast milk or infant formula provides all the nutrients, minerals and vitamins needed for healthy physical growth and development until around six months of age. After this age, in addition to breast milk or formula, infants need solid foods to meet their increased nutrient requirements.
12
When can first food or solids be started? First foods can be introduced at around 6 months of age as long as the infant shows signs of readiness. These signs include: • Good head and neck control • The ability to sit up almost on their own • They are able to move food from the front to the back of the mouth and swallow • They have a chewing action • They are interested in food and the environment It is important that you do not introduce first foods to your baby before four months of age, as your baby’s digestive system won’t yet be fully developed and isn’t ready for food.
Your Local Families Magazine April / May 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Family Health What order should first foods be introduced? It is recommended that we start with iron-containing foods, including iron-enriched infant cereals, pureed meat, poultry and fish, or cooked tofu and legumes. After the introduction of iron containing foods, there are no recommendations on an order that foods should be introduced. It is up to you which foods you decide to introduce to your infant (e.g. fruit, vegetables, grains and/or dairy).
How quickly can new foods be introduced? The current guidelines suggest that foods can be introduced at a rate that suits your infant. There are no recommendations on the number of new foods that can be introduced at one time.
What foods and drinks are not suitable for babies? Foods with added sugar, salt and honey as well as foods that are a choking risk including whole nuts, hard pieces of fruit and vegetables and popcorn should be avoided. To keep tap water safe, it needs to be boiled and then cooled when giving to infants under 12 months of age. Small amounts of cow’s milk can be used in the preparation of solid foods but not given as a main drink to children until 12 months of age.
When can allergen containing foods be introduced? Allergen containing foods, including cooked egg, fish and nut pastes, can be introduced at the same time as other foods – around 6 months. However, if parents are concerned they should seek advice from a dietitian or appropriate health professional.
Progressing through textures It is recommended that you start your baby on puree foods, which are smooth with no lumps. You can make puree foods yourself
with a blender by pureeing up a wide variety of foods from the food groups. If you are breastfeeding, you can use breastmilk as the liquid to help achieve a puree consistency. As your baby tolerates puree foods, they can progress onto mashed/lumpy foods and then onto finger foods. Generally, baby can have ‘family foods’ from around 12 months of age. Progressing through textures of foods with your baby is important in helping them ‘learn’ how to eat and use their tongue and muscles in their mouth. Don’t forget to check out this video on infant feeding if you haven’t already: bit.ly/IntroducingFirstFoods Baby’s First Foods is a guest article written by Nicole Bentley – Nutrition Services Manager and Accredited Practicing Dietitian – Nutrition Australia Qld, www.naqld.org

Building mental well-being and resilience in kids. Mental health disorders in children in Australia are on the rise. The latest statistics available suggest that almost 14% of children aged between 4 and 17 have experienced a mental disorder such as anxiety at some point in their young lives. In the absence of appropriate support, children can develop unhealthy habits and sometimes risky coping strategies. For example, 11% of young people between 15 and 24 smoke daily and 39% drink unsafe levels alcohol. These statistics are scary. So how do we give our kids the best possible chance of making good choices for themselves now and in the future? As much as we try, we can’t always protect our kids from feeling big emotions and ending up in tricky situations. Sometimes the world is going to throw some heavy stuff their way, and we won’t always be there to shield them from feelings of hurt, disappointment, fear or anger. The best we can do to protect our kids from long lasting harm is to help them build their resilience and develop good protective factors. Here are 10 things you can do to build mental well-being and resilience in your child.
1. Let them do things for themselves Kids learn by doing. Letting them try things for themselves helps to build their self-confidence. It allows them to prove to you they are trustworthy and capable of greater independence. You can start to build your child’s independence gradually from an early age, e.g. ask your toddler to find their shoes, give your preppie the task of unpacking their school bag every day.

2. Encourage your child to learn an instrument According to studies conducted by Vanderbilt University’s Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning, children who have a strong foundation of emotional literacy tend to have more positive relationships with others, feel happier, and even do better academically. Research has found a link between learning music and development of emotional awareness and emotional literacy.
3. M odel the behaviour you want to see in your kids, including expression of appropriate feelings. Children learn from watching others. They are hardwired to tune into those around them and will often copy what they see. Show them it’s OK to talk about how they feel, that feelings are normal and that it’s human nature to feel scared, angry, and hurt sometimes. Show them how to give their big emotions the time

Family Health and space to be felt, and show them how to move on when it’s appropriate to do so and the moment has passed.
4. Hold regular family game nights A significant protective factor for our children is their strong connections to their family unit. An easy way to foster that connection is through shared play, which can continue even as kids get older. Family board game nights are fun at any age! Family rituals anchor kids to their past and connect them to their roots.
5. Walk and talk Give your kids plenty of time to debrief with you about their day. Life can be fast-paced and super busy at times. Always find time to slow down and give you and your child the opportunity to reflect. A 15-minute slow ‘walk and talk’ around the block or while chilling on the couch can be extremely powerful. This dedicated time can also aid with transitions if you have a child that struggles with being hurried through the day and from one activity to the next.
6. Promote physical exercise It’s well documented that physical activity helps to improve mental health. This, however, does not always mean organised sport. A game of tag, wrestle with the dog, or a dip in the local pool are all excellent options. Organised sport of course does have many benefits for mental health, but it’s not always an option for some families. Any exercise your child can get is good.
7. Encourage appropriate use of social media Social media, when used appropriately, can allow older kids to strengthen connections with their peers and their family. There is a dark side to social media of course that we are all well aware of, so it’s important to ensure your child’s screen time is well-monitored, and that the rules of social media use are well understood.
8. Let your kids be bored It’s those moments where nothing is scheduled that gives kids the opportunity to really exercise their imagination. Those higher-level
executive functioning skills like problem-solving, initiation and organisation are very much connected with feelings of self-worth and accomplishment. Allowing your kids time to be bored creates space for them to channel their energy into activities that require them to use their whole brain.
9. Give them the tools they need to self-calm and self-regulate In the early years, our children do rely on their parents to help them manage their big emotions. We call this co-regulation. Over time, kids should learn to rely less on the grown-ups in their life and be more and more able to calm themselves - at least for minor irritations. As well as modelling good self-regulation, you can provide kids with tools to help them calm down e.g. provide a quiet retreat, cubby area or other space that’s just theirs to use when they need to decompress. Other options for self-calming include providing access to music, having a trampoline in the back yard, or keeping a calm down kit on hand with sensory toys that can have a calming effect such as playdough or kinetic sand.
10. Help your child to identify their circle of support While you hope to be your child’s favourite person, chances are you might not be. It’s important that your child is aware of who their people are - the trusted individuals in their lives who they can count on if they are having a hard time. Sit down and draw this out with your child. Ask them who is in their inner circle. If no one in their inner circle is free to talk, who might be suitable in their wider circle? A teacher, a group leader, or family friend? If you have any concerns about your child’s mental health, please seek assistance from your General Practitioner. You can also visit www.headspace.org.au for additional support with children’s mental health. This article is a guest post by Dr Nicole Grant, Practice Principal at Gateway Therapies. Keeping Connected while Parenting
Talking Families We’ve heard the saying, “Parenting means you’re never alone… but it does get lonely”. With our little one’s crawling up and down our legs – it can be hard to get a minute to think, let alone plan a social calendar. Even when we’re catching up with a mate these connections are often filled with distractions (like the kids singing, “Snack…Snack…. SNACK!”). But we know that being connected with family or friends is important not just for our kids but for the grown-ups too. Connection is good for our health, helps us build confidence and brings happiness to our lives. So, how do we stay connected while we’re managing our busy schedules? Where do we even begin if we’re trying to reconnect with our mates? Especially if some of our relationships have changed since adding kids to the mix. First, knowing it’s okay, and even normal for our circles to change throughout life takes a lot of pressure off. It doesn’t mean it’s forever. If things are busy, spelling out to our mates that they mean a lot, but they have to be patient with us, is sometimes a necessary step. Communication is key.
stuff with your mates that the kids will enjoy too - like a movie, or family-friendly cafes. Joining Dads group or Mums group with people who are flexible because they’re juggling kids too. Or simply organising a chat over a cup of tea instead of a big outing. We all take a “time out” from parenting every now and again so, leave the parent-guilt at home and find new ways to connect with people that work for you. “Keeping connected while parenting” is a guest post from Talking Families. Visit www.talkingfamilies.gov.au
And if you’ve moved to somewhere new, or lost touch with friends or relatives, be patient with yourself. It takes time to build up social groups and support networks, especially as a busy parent. In the meantime, connecting with people in small ways can add a bit of cheer to your day. Simple things like giving the neighbour a wave, chatting to your local coffee shop owners, or making small talk with another parent at the park. Being open to different cultures, opinions, and ways of life can also enrich our lives and widen our network. If you get a bit nervous meeting new people, keep in mind that they often like us more than we realise! And if you’ve already got a bunch of mates but find it hard to make time - bite size connections are a lot easier than big events. Asking a neighbour to drop by so we can take a snooze or a shower (heaven with a new-born!). Calling a mate for ten minutes during lunch when you’ve been out of touch. Or maybe it’s about doing

Autism If you think your child has autism, or if you have a new diagnosis for your child, it’s important to know you aren’t alone and there are supports available for your child, and also your family. Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder, which is more prevalent in males than females, affecting approximately 1 in 100 people. Evidence shows early intervention (delivered within a program that meets the 2012 Australian Good Practice Guidelines) makes a difference to a child’s development, helping them to develop important skills that will encourage independence, the ability to communicate and opportunities for inclusion. While there’s no ‘cure’ for autism, there is hope. Autism is part of a spectrum that is often referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Individuals with the condition often have unique abilities and skills. However for these to be realised, the disabling aspects of autism need to be overcome. Early intervention is key to achieving this. People with autism usually share challenges in two main areas; however, their condition can affect them differently. Some people are able to live independent lives, while others may require ongoing specialist support and care. The two main areas of difficulty include: • Social interaction and social communication, including difficulty with body language and verbal communication, reciprocal conversation, emotional and social reciprocity and managing structured parts of the day; and • Restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviours or interests, including rituals and routines, and difficulty with hyperor hypo-sensitivity to sensory input. If you’re concerned your child isn’t developing typically, it’s important to investigate this with a trusted medical or health professional. If your child does have autism, an early diagnosis will ensure your child and family can access appropriate supports, giving your child the best chance to develop essential life skills and reach their full potential.
EARLY INTERVENTION IS KEY
Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder National Guidelines for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Australia highlight that ASD can be diagnosed by any trained health professionals who observes an individual for specific behaviours relating to social communication and restricted / repetitive behaviours and interests. Most commonly, children are assessed by a paediatrician on referral from a general practitioner (GP). Children can be assessed and diagnosed from a very early age—sometimes even under the age of two. Generally, expected developmental milestones guide when parents choose to consult with a GP. While it is a lifelong condition, with early intervention, many children can develop the ability to communicate, learn self-help and academic skills, and improve fine and gross motor skills.
What next? If you think your child has autism, or if you are concerned about how they are developing, it’s important to speak to a trusted medical professional. A paediatrician or clinical psychologist can assess and diagnosis your child. You will need a referral from your General Practitioner. Early intervention is essential and will give your child the best opportunity to develop the skills they need to reach their full potential. Once you have a diagnosis, you can choose a service provider which offers your family the support your need. If you are in an area operating under the NDIS, AEIOU can help you with the process you need to register as a participant and to access a plan and funding supports. This editorial was supplied by AEIOU Foundation for Children with Autism. Now in its 15th year of operation, AEIOU enrols more than 300 children throughout the service each year. To find out if there is a centre near you, and to access support to navigate the NDIS, visit www.aeiou.org.au. You can also visit a local centre, with open days taking place throughout the year, starting on 24 March 2020. To find out more about their services, visit www.aeiou.org.au or call 1300 273 435.

Hawaii 10 things to do in Hawaii with Kids If you are hunting around looking for your next family trip and wanted to go somewhere that was warm, easy and overseas, then take a look at the things to do in Hawaii with kids. We were there recently and thoroughly loved our week of sun drenched fun filled days (and nights) on O’ahu, the main island.
Best time to go to Hawaii Because Hawaii is blessed with year round great weather, (O’ahu’s temperatures range from 26°C to 31°C all year long) you can really choose just about any time to enjoy the island. If you wanted to be guaranteed perfect dry, sunny days, the best time to visit Hawaii is April-May and September-October. The dry, summer season runs from April until September, but June to August is very busy (and more expensive) tourist season. We’d recommend planning for an Easter break in April or the Brisbane September school holidays for a balance of well-priced accommodation, dry sunny days and minimal crowds.
The best things to do in Hawaii with kids Because we spent our week in Waikiki, we have only covered the best things to do on O’ahu, the main island, but if you wanted to go to Maui or any of the other islands, there are even more things to do!
1. Beach time The most obvious (and free) thing for families to do in Hawaii is to chill out at the beach. There are no private beaches in Hawaii, which means you can chill out at any beach that you like. The beaches are clean and the water is delightfully warm, often late into the evening. For your reassurance, some parts of the Waikiki beach have lifeguards on duty. A lifeguard tower is located on Central Waikiki Beach near the Waikiki Police substation (2425 Kalakaua Ave). The Hilton hotel on Duke Kahanamoku Beach hosts Waikiki’s only

saltwater lagoon, which makes a safe, swimming spot for little ones. You can hire peddlos and little canoes and this was one of our favourite beach hangouts during the week we were there.
2. Parasailing If you have older kids, you may like to take them out parasailing in Hawaii. We went out on the water from the Koko Marina with a company called Hawaiian Parasail. When you parasail with this company you can get picked up from your hotel and dropped back at no extra charge! You also have the option of choosing which length of line you want ie. how high you want to go up. We chose the mid-range length, but I suspect that they are much the same. There are many tour companies to choose from, read the reviews of each and see which best suits your family. We enjoyed the one we chose; the staff were efficient and friendly, and we were able to buy photos of our flight on a USB afterwards. For us, parasailing was a definite bucket list item!
3. Snorkelling with wild turtles Easily the highlight of our time in Hawaii was the trip we took snorkelling with the wild sea turtles. We took a tour with Ocean Joy Cruises and was definitely worth the investment. They take you to the unspoiled Wai’anae coastline where wild dolphins, turtles and other Hawaiian

sea life play and flourish. We even got to see many, many humuhumunukunukuapuaa… and if you don’t know what that is, ask your kids. If they watch Octonauts, they will know! It is a half day trip with a delicious lunch included. We saw dolphins at a distance and wild sea turtles up close and personal. The water was clear, clean and warm. Master 12 even got to drive the boat. We didn’t want to leave at the end of the tour! This tour is suitable for all ages as it is only a half day so not to strenuous for younger kids.
coast of the Island of O’ahu in the Hawaii Kai neighbourhood of East Honolulu, in the Hawaiian Islands. Hanauma is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Island. Many people like to snorkel in the bay, but it has suffered somewhat over the years from overuse. We recommend a picnic and a walk along the shore.
4. Hike Diamond Head
8. Pearl Harbour
Diamond Head is approx. a 2 mile/40 min walk from Waikiki to the park entrance, so it is doable, but we opted for the public transport option. Public buses are easy to use and available for a reasonable price – $2.75 per adult per journey or $5.50 for a 1 day pass, $1.25 per child (under 17) or $2.50 for a 1 day pass, under 5s are free. There is a nominal $1 entry fee per person (adults and children) to the park. The hike takes about 30 mins from the park entrance in the middle of the volcano. It is a short but strenuous hike, being all uphill and there is not much shade along the way. It is not suitable for pushchairs or flip flops. You’ll need proper walking shoes, suntan lotion and a water bottle. There is a free water fountain at the start of the trek, near to the toilets, there is nothing further up. The view from the top is amazing and worth the hot, sweaty, hard work of the hike.
5. Experience a traditional Luau One of the most traditional things you can do when in Hawaii is take your kids to a luau. Even though I have been to Hawaii 3 times prior to this trip, I had never made it to a Luau! There are so many to choose from, that the decision can be overwhelming. In the end we decided on Chiefs Luau and we were not disappointed. The luau gives the true meaning to ’dinner and a show’! At Chiefs Luau we were entertained by Chief Sielu Avea who was the MC. He introduced all the dancers and entertainment. There was fire eating, hula dancing, crowd participation and of course, the dinner. Check around to see which luau best suits your family because there are many on offer.
6. Visit the Dole Plantation Originally a fruit stand in the 1950s, the Dole Plantation is 40-minutes out of Waikiki and is the place to enjoy Hawaii’s “Pineapple Experience”. There are plenty of activities to take advantage of including the Pineapple Express Train Tour, the Plantation Garden tour and the Pineapple Garden Maze, as well as free activities like a pineapple cutting demonstration and a fish-feeding pond. Entry is free and activity packages are available.
7. Picnic at Hanauma Bay According to Wikipedia, Hanauma is a marine embayment formed within a tuff ring and located along the southeast
Visiting Pearl Harbour with children can be a daunting excursion, especially if you have children younger than five years old. If you are planning a trip to Pearl Harbour with your kids, I would recommend doing some reading (and watching videos) beforehand to get a basic understanding of what happened. There are some fascinating facts at the memorial, (like oil is STILL leaking into the harbour as it is too dangerous to remove it!)
9. Polynesian Cultural Centre The Polynesian Cultural Centre is a Polynesian-themed theme park and living museum located in Laie, on the northern shore of O’ahu, Hawaii. The Centre encompasses eight simulated tropical villages, in which performers demonstrate various arts and crafts from throughout Polynesia. Do note however, that this is a constructed theme-park/venue and although the displays and shows are that of the local people, it is made for attracting the tourist dollars. You be the judge if this is right for your family!
10. Visit Kualoa Ranch Kualoa is a 4000-acre private nature reserve and working cattle ranch, as well as a popular tourist attraction and filming location on the windward coast of O’ahu in Hawaii. It is located on the north shore and is where the famous Jurassic Park (and many other) movie was filmed. We love, love, LOVED our visit to Kualoa Ranch. We booked a tour to visit the ranch and spent a full day exploring the farm and enjoying the activities. We did an hour long horse ride and zip-lining on their stretch of 7 sections of zip lines and 2 suspension bridges through the amazing Ka’a’awa Valley. Included in our full day tour was a buffet lunch and return transport on an air-conditioned coach. I highly recommend booking in advance as the Kualoa Ranch activities get booked out well in advance. There are so many things to do in Hawaii. There is also a zoo and an aquarium! We did not visit these on this trip as we have been a many other zoos and aquariums around the world… whatever you do in Hawaii have a great time! Its an easy and fun holiday destination that can be as peaceful or busy as you choose it to be!
