Welcome to our BRISBANE SCHOOLS & EDUCATION Issue! Can I get a HOORAY for Brisbane schools being back in business? Wow friends, I had no idea how simultaneously bored and unwilling to learn my children were. I’m writing them personalised report cards for the lockdown period and they are not going to be happy with the results. Not nearly as disappointed as the parents are, though. My favourite part of home-schooling was starting a Masters of Education and completely ignoring the learning from home activities assigned to my children. How good is irony?! My teaching pedagogy is an inclusive, constructivist practice which engages the whole child and encourages connection. My parenting is still lacklustre and a combination of investing in the most promising child (it varies) and intervention when they are visibly dysfunctional. The things I missed most during school lockdown (besides the teachers and other parents) were:

SEPTEMBER IS INTERNATIONAL CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Sadly around 750 children aged 0-14 are diagnosed with cancer in Australia every year. Young people should be focusing on school and friendships, but when they have cancer, their focus instead can be on medication, hospital appointments, and operations.
You can help raise awareness of childhood cancers by making a tax-deductible donation to a non-profit childhood cancer organisation – or by being sponsored to talk like a pirate! Talk Like A Pirate Day is on September 19 and provides a great opportunity to have fun and raise funds. Redkite, The Kids’ Cancer Project, Childhood Cancer Association, Neuroblastoma Australia, and CanTeen are among the many Australian childhood cancer organisations looking for your support this year and beyond.

Parenting
Drama Class
Your Secret Weapon Against Childhood Anxiety By Elizabeth Avery Scott
For many parents, having an anxious child is one of the great parenting challenges. It can be frustrating – and even embarrassing – when your child refuses to get into the water at swimming lessons, or has a screaming meltdown before going into a friend’s birthday party, or feigns sickness every time there’s an exam. These are all manifestations of anxiety – where your child is willing to do anything to avoid facing what’s making them anxious.
But did you know that joining a drama class may help your anxious child?
How drama can help At Perform Australia we’ve given a lot of thought to this. While drama is often about a performance – admittedly a scary thought for the shy and nervous – it is the process of drama that assists with anxiety. A drama class is a creative way to gradually develop skills for dealing with life’s challenges. But how does this actually work? Traditionally, a drama class begins with a warmup – just as professional actors warm up before a show. There is a focus on breathing and relaxation, stretching the body, and exercising the voice in preparation for the activities to come. It’s these very activities – breathing, slowing things down, and body awareness or ‘mindfulness’ – that are often taught by psychologists to assist with anxiety. A drama student learns them as part-and-parcel of being an actor. Next, there may be some activities that invite imaginative input. Creative storytelling, embodiment of characters, improvising a scene based on a theme – all of these require drama students to delve into their own ideas bank. They bring their inner selves out into the open. While initially, anxious children may be tentative about this process, once they get the hang of it, we watch them experience a sense of release and freedom in their own creative expression. Science is confirming again and again that creative expression is good for us; creativity floods the brain with dopamine, which relieves anxiety and depression and generates a general sense of happiness.
6
Following the initial drama exercises, a class may then turn to working on a script for an upcoming performance.
Learning a script Learning a script frequently involves interaction with others, but the boon for the anxious kid is: what you say is already prepared! So, drama helps kids interact socially with others, via the medium of performance, without some of the usual pressures of having to know what to say. Script work becomes a shared experience, forging bonds, and giving your child the sense that “we’re working on this together”.
Performing in front of others When performance time comes – whether that’s a stage performance or a film shoot – it’s normal for your child to feel anxious. Here, a drama class teacher can take the opportunity to normalise the experience of anxiety and note
Your Local Families Magazine August / September 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Parenting anxious child is just too overwhelmed we recognise that now is not the right time to push. The skills learned in drama class do take some time to master after all. At this point it’s important to praise the child’s effort and preparation, and to debrief gently over what they are feeling.
one very important aspect: it will pass. Teachers will explain to your child that what they are experiencing before a performance – nerves – is their body’s way of getting ready for the challenge of performance. Butterflies in the stomach, feeling a little sweaty, even a sense of panic are all reasonable human responses before you step out on stage, or the director calls “action!” Children who perform regularly learn to sit with this discomfort for some minutes, without letting it overcome them. This is an important life skill to master, and participation in drama gives the anxious child many opportunities to practice it.
No pressure to perform If there is some reason why an anxious child can’t perform on stage or screen when the time comes, at Perform Australia, we won’t pressure them. We’ll encourage it as much as we can, for sure, but if on one particular day an
But, if your anxious child does walk out on stage and perform – boy, are they thrilled when they return backstage afterwards! It is such an achievement to face fears, enjoy the moment, and put all they’ve learned into practice. And it’s here that their drama experience becomes a turning point in their personal history. What’s more, you as a parent now have another tool at your disposal. Next time your child is anxious about an upcoming challenge, you say, “Remember how you were feeling before your performance? And how great you felt afterwards? You can do that again – I know you can!” Drama experiences create memories of battles won – for our children, and for ourselves. So drama class might just be your next secret weapon against anxiety. Elizabeth Avery Scott is CEO and co-founder of Perform Australia, a leading Australian drama school. A trained companion Labrador retriever, Monty the Dog is fast becoming part of the green sisterhood, focussing much of her attention on the wellbeing of the students as she makes her rounds of the campus. Year 12 student, Hilary Barrett says, “Her sweet and happy nature brightens each and every student’s day.” In our current climate of change and uncertainty, Monty the Dog is consistent in her interactions with the students. She sits with girls who need one-on-one attention, calmly accepting their pats and scratches, while quietly listening to their concerns and thoughts. As all students returned to school on 25 May, so did Monty, with a direct mission to support our students in returning to a sense of normality. Put perfectly by Mrs Michelle Crouch, Head of Department – Drama: “A quick pat, tail wag, human giggles, a lap of the room and she moves off with purpose to affect the next human with a hello and positive affirmation”.

HIRING A
PRIMARY OR HIGH SCHOOL
TUTOR Are you considering a tutor for your child?
People hire tutors for their children for all kinds of reasons, and it is not always because they feel their child is struggling. There are many advantages – academic, social, and personal - to hiring a primary or high school tutor.
HOW A TUTOR CAN HELP YOUR CHILD
SOCIAL
Let us look at the ways a tutor can have a positive benefit for your child:
If your child is shy or has anxiety, they may hold back from seeking help in the classroom. If your child is too social, they may find the presence of other students distracting. A home tutor can help your child focus, complete the work they started in class, and answer all the questions a shy child lacked the confidence to ask.
ACADEMIC Does your child have literacy and numeracy comprehension issues that need attention, or are they looking to further enhance already great marks to give them a competitive edge? Children learn in different ways, but a classroom environment cannot always accommodate every child’s learning style in the lesson time allowed. When building on the learning foundations, a tutor can tailor their private or small group lesson to your child’s way of learning, enabling better comprehension and giving a struggling child that all-important lightbulb moment and confidence boost. For children who find learning in school a breeze, high school tutors can expand on their classroom learning to help ready them for tertiary education and their planned career path.
We recommend parents look for individualised approaches to learning in tutoring, because, learning needs will differ between each child.
8
Your child will get to know their tutor through regular sessions, forming a bond that can boost confidence and help your child keep pace with their peers.
Selecting the right tutor can be the difference between an effective learning experience and a frustrating one. At Cluey Learning we only accept 6% of tutor applicants to ensure our customers get the best tutor possible. We look for subject matter expertise and experience, but above that we look for patience, friendliness, enthusiasm and the ability to tailor teaching to each individual student’s needs. And our education team provides plenty of support with curriculum and pedagogy. As an online tutoring company, we recommend broadening your search for the best tutoring experience beyond what’s available locally - the right tutor for your child may not be the closest!
Another recommendation from Kumon is for parents of young children to consider a tutoring program that builds foundations in literacy and numeracy. Once children have mastered the fundamentals in these two areas, learning other subjects becomes far easier.
‘SCHOOL AT HOME’

Education homework can be far out of context for many parents. A tutor can ‘sit’ with your child during homework to help them stay on track and work to the best of their ability.
FINDING A TUTOR There are flexible tutoring options to accommodate most families’ requirements. A tutor can come to your home if a one-to-one private lesson is preferred to help your child focus – or if your child would rather not have others know that they are struggling to keep up in school. Similarly, online tutoring can be one-to-one or small group. Online tutoring is a great option for children who study remotely, live some distance from their nearest tutor, or who are travelling. Tutoring is also available in after-school Education Centres, which offer small group lessons to help your child gain a better understanding of, or expand on, their classroom learning.
IS HIRING A TUTOR RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY? that the pressure of juggling different year levels at the dining table, fitting in your own tasks and chores, and the many other distractions in the home and it’s understandable if schoolwork began to slide a little. If you feel your child has fallen behind and needs help to catch up, a tutor is available to help.
The presence of a professional tutor – in person or online - means that your child will receive the support they need to flourish, develop confidence and find success in subjects where they might otherwise have expected to struggle.
Tutors keep pace with the National Curriculum. They know what your child should be learning and can help catch up to – and surpass - where they need to be.
Whatever the reason for wanting to invest further in your child’s education, it is definitely a wise choice. Putting literacy and numeracy front and centre at home has a knock-on effect that will see students take their classroom work more seriously. It’s a great way to also involve yourself further in their learning as you’ll have another educational professional to touch base with.
HOMEWORK
Give tutoring a try. An investment in education is an investment in the future.
While we would all like to have the time to sit down and help our child with their homework, often other demands get in the way. And, let’s face it, without any recent classroom experience the tasks set in

Education IES COLLEGE An IB World School opening in Spring Hill in January 2021
A 21-year resident of the education landscape in Spring Hill offering the Foundation Year for The University of Queensland, IES College is now an authorised IB World School, offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme to local and international year 11 and 12 students. Building on its proud reputation for delivering high-quality, innovative educational experiences, and an award winning track record of successfully preparing students for university undergraduate degrees, the expansion of IES’s educational programme will see IES College become Brisbane’s only independent, co-educational, secular, not-for-profit school to exclusively deliver the internationally recognised IB Diploma Programme, and enrolments are now open for year 11, 2021.
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. IES College’s fully refurbished inner city, vertical campus located at 433 Boundary St, Spring Hill, is a welcoming learning environment for students. Globally inspired, light-filled spaces for collaboration and socialising, quiet places for concentration and deep thinking, flexible Wi-Fi classrooms that can be transformed for purpose, a research learning centre at the hub of the school, STEM and art studios, performing arts space and more. The smaller boutique environment provides a personalised student experience, encouraging each student to reach their full potential, feel safe and supported. Bigger isn’t always better. The college takes a whole-of-student-development approach to teaching and learning; the students will simultaneously be challenged, engaged, supported and nurtured. Simply put, the students will be heard. Students are welcome on campus anytime between 8AM and 6PM, but classes will only begin at 9.30AM, because IES College understands that a later start is what teenage bodies and brains need to flourish. The IB Diploma Programme curriculum holistically develops the whole student – balancing academic subjects with student led personal development through the CAS programme of creativity, activity and service and an individual research project which prepares students for university level study, all part of strengthening the students’ skills as responsible, independent learners. IES College has partnered with a range of community groups in Spring Hill and beyond to extend learning beyond the classroom and offer an experiential learning environment. For students, not every day will be spent in the classroom. Many of the activities will take place off campus, outdoors in the local community. Brisbane
is our campus! Students will have regular trips to galleries, libraries, museums, industry and technology hubs. Green space, parks and community sporting facilities nearby provide ample opportunities for students to have some downtime from academic pursuits to keep active and healthy. There are so many ways to explore the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme outside of the classroom. IB World Schools share a common philosophy – a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision. IES College doesn’t just talk about diversity and inclusion; it lives, breathes it and lead by example. Our teachers and professional staff are multilingual and multicultural, and have travelled the world. They understand different cultures, and have a real grasp of what it means to be a world citizen. Students have access to virtual global classrooms to learn and collaborate with students from around the world. If English isn’t your first language, IES gives you the opportunity to study in your mother tongue and ensure there is support and resources available to you because it recognises how important it is to maintain connection to language and culture. Being purposefully global in outlook infuses every aspect of the learning at IES College. Students will learn to collaborate, work in teams, and confidently communicate their ideas across cultures. They’ll learn to think critically and creatively, navigate uncertainties and take measured risks as they embrace diversity with a global mindset. These concepts are at the very core of the IB Diploma Programme, and will help students develop a broader life view, preparing them for success. In a world that’s experiencing profound change, society needs more internationally minded people who are open and curious about the world and different cultures. The IB Diploma Programme at IES College will prepare culturally competent young people with the skills and values to create positive change in the world. Full Scholarships for local students entering year 11 are available. Scholarships test dates are August 29th and October 17th, 2020. Enrolment are now open for Year 11, 2021. Three cool STEM projects for children In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations pervade our everyday lives, particularly as we become more and more globalised. It is important then that we focus on raising future creators, thinkers, problem solvers, innovators and inventors that will thrive in an information-based and technological world. An April 2015 report by PwC indicated 75 per cent of Australia’s fastest-growing occupations required STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills. For this reason, schools are focused on preparing students with the skills required for the future workforce through not only building their STEM knowledge but also building their skills in problem solving, innovation, collaboration and the ability to become critical and creative thinkers. Parents can also nurture and encourage their child’s STEM learning. Here are three cool STEM projects you can do with your child at home contributed by St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, an Australia Education Awards finalist for Best STEM Program.
Three Little Pigs
Make a ramp
Materials: playdough and straws or spaghetti and marshmallows, hairdryer or fan
Materials: A4 paper, sticky tape, bottle top lid, LEGO/Duplo blocks, ruler
The story of Three Little Pigs is a much-loved childhood fairy-tale that also provides an opportunity to link STEM learning. In this fun, hands-on activity, young learners can apply principles of engineering, science and mathematics. Most STEM projects focus on solving a problem and in this activity children explore 3D shapes and consider different weather conditions, to build a new house for the three little pigs that is strong enough to withstand the huff and the puff of the big bad wolf. Parents can do this at home with their child using just a few simple materials such as playdough and straws or spaghetti and marshmallows. Discuss with your child what they think is needed to build a strong house and guide them to consider different weather conditions. Then ask your child to plan and design their house. After the design process, they can build it using their chosen materials. When students in Year 1 at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School were tasked with this challenge, they worked collaboratively in groups to design and build their houses. They then tested the strength of their final constructions using a hairdryer and garden blower to simulate the wolf’s huffing and puffing. Year 1 teacher Georgi Eadie said the Three Little Pigs STEM challenge allowed the students to use their knowledge in a realworld context. “It makes the learning relevant to the 21st century and gives them the skills so that they can apply their knowledge in a real-world context.” As with most STEM projects, this challenge develops many skills beyond simply the STEM pillars. “They really love opportunities to work hands-on and this challenge has the added benefit of developing our young learners fine motor skills through the use of playdough. “This activity also helps foster higher-order thinking and problemsolving skills,” said Georgi.
12
In this STEM challenge, children plan, build and test a ramp that allows an object to slide far. The activity reinforces concepts of science, engineering and mathematics as children engage in enquiry-based learning to problem solve a ramp design. STEM projects generally link the learning to the real-world context so that children can see how their ideas and solutions can benefit our society and even our world as a whole. You can start this activity with your child by investigating different ramps in the real world such as slippery dips, water slides, ski slopes and skate ramps. Next, create a test ramp out of cardboard to explore how different objects roll or slide down it. Try Matchbox cars, dice, balls, scissors – any objects that provide a variety of shapes and surfaces. You can even try different surfaces on your ramp such as bubble wrap and examine how these surfaces impact the object’s ability to slide. The next phase involves your child planning and drawing their own ramp design that will allow a bottle top to slide far. Once the design stage is complete, it’s time to build. Using materials including paper, sticky tape and blocks, work with your child to construct the ramp. The last phase of the project is the testing phase. Your child can test their ramp design by sliding a bottle top down the ramp and measuring the distance travelled with a ruler. From this point, you can discuss ways to improve the ramp design to allow the object to travel even farther. When St Margaret’s teacher Sophie Cameron set this challenge for her prep students, she knew it was an opportunity not just to reinforce their STEM knowledge but also to develop their collaboration skills. “The students love working in a group; being able to share their ideas and work collaboratively are really important skills for them,” said Sophie.

Egg drop Materials: a raw egg, recyclables including paper, cardboard, sticky tape, straws, cotton, newspaper, plastic bags This is a fun (and sometimes messy!) STEM project to try with your child at home. Drawing on principles of science and engineering, the aim is to design and build a contraption using various materials to protect a raw egg from a high fall. Firstly, let your child plan and draw their vehicle design. Next, help them to gather the materials they will need to build their prototype. Then, allow them to construct their vehicle with the main aim of using as few materials as possible to make the packaging strong enough to withstand the fall. Finally, test your child’s design by finding somewhere you can drop the egg from a fair height and… bombs away. For older children, you can set additional design requirements and guidelines. When Year 7 students at St Margaret’s collaborated on this project, their contraption could not exceed 1kg and half the egg had to be visible. Head of Science and Technology Chris Dunn said: “Students needed to utilise creative thinking to develop viable designs and a critical thinking ‘engineering design approach’ to refine and improve their final prototypes.” Whatever STEM project you choose to do with your child, you can be sure the hands-on, project-based style of learning will be an engaging and enjoyable experience while also laying the foundation to develop key skills for their future. PAYING FOR PERFORMANCE Is cash for grades or sports a good idea?
For as long as grades and results have been around, students and children have been rewarded fiscally by parents and family members. Whilst this may seem like a simple harmless gesture, do we ever stop to think about the impact that this may be having on children regarding their motivation and mindset?
MOTIVATION & MINDSET These two dynamics, motivation and mindset, are key when discussing the positives and negatives in rewarding children with cash or other extrinsic rewards such as a new game, a new bike or pair of shoes the child has wanted for a long time. I think you’d agree, we all want our children to be motivated to achieve and to display a positive mindset in all aspects of life, but how do we best help our children develop these skills without being overbearing or placing unwarranted pressure on them?
Growth mindset Let’s start with growth mindset, a key pillar at Grace Lutheran College and somewhat a buzzword in modern day education. Leading researcher Carol Dweck has defined two different types of mindset (growth and fixed) and investigated the impact that each can have on learning and development. Studies show that people with a growth mindset are more likely to stay committed to a task when it gets hard and learn from their mistakes through seeking and accepting feedback. They’re therefore more likely to maximise their potential. Trevor Ragan from trainugly.com highlights the two key characteristics of growth mindset as BELIEF and FOCUS; with people in a growth mindset believing skills are built, that you can learn and grow and are focused on the process of getting better. This is in stark comparison to people in a fixed mindset who believe skills are born and are focused on performance, outcomes and not looking bad. Growth Mindset is therefore recognised as the foundation of learning. Everything, be it developing your shooting skills in Football, understanding Algebra or making new friends, comes back to our mindset.
Motivation Here’s where motivation comes in. Whilst there are many types of motivation, two that are consistent as themes are Intrinsic and Extrinsic. Intrinsic being where the individual is motivated by their own personal desire to improve or to satisfy a self-fulfilling desire, whereas Extrinsic motivation comes from outside sources such as incentive, power and affiliation.
14
Motivation can be a complex beast, and certain individuals react differently to different sources of motivation. It’s also important to note that when in balance and moderation, having more than one type of motivation can be useful. Nevertheless, it’s generally accepted, and I certainly agree, that for long term success and engagement, Intrinsic motivation, which focusses on learning, self-improvement, fulfilment and personal growth should be our priority. As soon as we offer an extrinsic incentive reward to children for a performance outcome, such as scoring a goal or getting a certain grade, their focus can switch from a growth to a fixed mindset. The likelihood of the effort and challenges being undertaken for self-improvement and personal growth is reduced, as this extrinsic reward is hanging over them. If it becomes about the ‘money’ or ‘reward’, children will start to lose enjoyment, fun and the self-fulfilment which comes with progress and improvement, which inevitably leads to early drop out and disengagement. This is particularly the case where there is a standing agreement, or an incentive offered prior to the completion of the task. For example, there is a huge difference between offering a child money or another extrinsic reward for scoring goals in sporting games, in comparison to post game offering to take a child out for a family meal to reward the effort and success they had that day. One has the potential to breed greed and entitlement, the other encourages hard work and humility – which has a direct impact on the child’s mindset.
Enabling growth mindset But rewards are important right? We all want to show our children that we are proud of their achievements and we appreciate them. So how do we help our children develop positive motivation and a growth mindset? Here are some key tips from the leading experts in developing mindset and motivation.
1. Always reward effort over outcome. Children need to know
that success is defined in more ways than a grade or by winning a trophy, so let’s consistently reward our children with positive reinforcement when we notice the hard work they put in and when they overcome a challenge.
Your Local Families Magazine August / September 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Education
2. Be specific with your praise. Children need to know exactly
what they have done well and can improve on, so that they can continue to develop. There is no point in just saying ‘you scored an amazing goal today’. Switch it up to say, ‘I loved how you controlled the ball before you scored today – I can see you’ve been working hard on that’. By doing this it’ll mean that they are also more likely to accept feedback when something hasn’t worked quite as well – ‘I loved how you were controlling the ball today, that’s going to give you a better chance of passing to a teammate next week – we can work on that, but remember, I’m really proud of how your ball control has improved – well done’.
3. Encourage your children to set S.M.A.R.T goals. These mean
specific, measurable, action based, realistic and time bound. Action based is key in goal setting as it ensures that the goals are process based over outcome based and ensures that the work and effort is being done first and foremost. Get into the right process and results will naturally follow!
4. Celebrate success as a family. When the bigger goals are
achieved, such as making a state team or finishing a set of
exams, go out together as a family and enjoy time together and acknowledge the sacrifices that you all make for each other. This could be something simple like a family meal out or having friends over, or something more extravagant like going to a show or sports game together.
5. Be present for them! I guarantee in 30 years’ time the child
will remember all the games and performances that you went to watch and the long car rides and sacrifices you made over the extrinsic rewards they received for scoring a goal or getting an A.
Everyone has their own developmental path and can accelerate at differing points to others – so instead of focusing on the outcome or how people perceive our success, lets join together and focus on the journey and how together, as a team, we are going to continue to have fun and smash through the next challenge. Family Health
Keeping children safe around water
Brisbanites are incredibly lucky to live so close to fabulous beaches, secluded water holes, and many fun community pools and lagoons. As the weather warms up, splashing around with family and friends is a great way to cool off, have fun, and exercise.
Children are naturally drawn to water; it sparkles in sunlight, it tickles toes at the beach, it moves and dances and feels cool on the skin. Water is an adventure, but children are not always aware that water can also be dangerous. Here are some tips to help your child stay safe around water. Competent adult supervision Competent adult supervision is required whenever children are near water. A toddler can drown in as little as 5cm of water, and even kids who know how to swim can be at risk of drowning. Competent adult supervision means: • An adult within arms’ reach of young children and weak swimmers at all times in the water • A nominated adult supervising, who passes the responsibility to someone else when taking a break • An adult not under the influence of drink or drugs It is best if the supervising adult can swim confidently, too, especially if children are playing in water deeper than they can stand in, or where waves and currents are present.

Family Health Creating barriers If you have a pool or dam on your property, it is important to follow safety guidelines and procedures to prevent children gaining unsupervised access to the water. Swimming pools and outdoor spas (hot tubs) in QLD must be fenced according to government guidelines. You can find the guidelines here: www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/ home-building-owners/pool-safety/does-your-pool-comply Dams on rural properties or in public parks do not require fencing under current laws, and neither do storm water or natural water channels. Be alert to any possible dangers when taking children into these areas.
Beach awareness Surf Lifesavers are trained to spot the safest places to swim at the beach, and that’s where they place their flags. Always swim between the flags so that lifesavers can spot if you or your child are in difficulty. There is information readily available on the Surf Lifesaving website to help you learn how to spot rips and other water dangers.
Children aged 5-13 years can also join the Nippers, which is amazing for growing a child’s confidence and knowledge in a beach environment. Find out more at www.lifesaving.com.au.
Swimming lessons Swimming lessons are an important part of water safety. Learning to swim is essential for gaining water confidence and maximising safety and enjoyment. Children can begin learning water confidence from a few months old, as well as survival tactics such as rolling onto their backs and floating. Swimming lessons focus on water enjoyment in the early years, with formal swimming lessons beginning around 4 years old. The best way to help your child to stay safe in water is to join them in the pool, or when swimming in water holes and at the beach. It’s great exercise and a fun way to interact with your child. If you feel your own swimming skills are in need of a refresher – or if you never learned to swim – you will find most swimming schools offer lessons specifically tailored to adults and parents. AIRLIE BEACH FOR FAMILIES
If you are looking for something to do in the next school holidays, look no further than Airlie Beach! Airlie Beach has so much to do that is fun for kids of all ages from toddlers to teens.
Tuk Tuk Tours in Airlie Beach If you want to get your bearings in the shortest amount of time, check out Just Tuk’n Around. Super fun with lots of local knowledge, your hosts will whizz you around Airlie’s footpaths and boardwalks leaving you with a full itinerary of things to do in Arlie Beach!
Airlie Beach Lagoon
We have a full list of all the walks, their lengths and difficulty rating on our website.
Cedar Creek Falls About 30 minutes out of Airlie Beach, towards Conway Beach, these falls are a must see for families. It’s recommended you visit in the wet season (November to April) but it falls most of the year and is home to freshwater turtles that children love to spot. You can even walk up to the top and bathe in the running pools. Families Tip: Don’t forget to pack the mosquito spray.
This swimming attraction is in the middle of the main street overlooking the sea, and it’s free! Its variety of depths suit all swimming abilities. It has a man-made beach and a playground, shade areas, toilets, and outdoor showers.
Beaches around Airlie Beach There are so many beaches in and around Airlie we thought we would give you a rundown. CORAL BEACH AND THE BEAK HIKE
This lagoon is the perfect place for families. It’s our number one choice of things to do in Airlie Beach with kids.
Drive through Airlie and up towards Shute Harbour. Here, in the Conway National Park, you will find the beautiful Coral Beach. As the name suggests there is no sand, just coral, making for an interesting sit or lie down.
Brand new playground! This huge playground is perfect for families with adventurous kids. Boasting a 10.5m high skywalk, sky cabins, mega slides, rope bridge and multi-level pirate ship, the playground is sure to be a hit. You will find this fantastic playground down near the sailing club.
The Great Walk Whilst Airlie Beach is renowned for its wonderful coastal features, this rainforest in the Conway Ranges is a must see. It has a 27km track that finishes along Airlie Beach. 27km might be too far for little ones to trek, but even a small part of it is worth doing.
20
Hike down from the carpark (about 1km) to the beach. You can keep walking along the beach to find the path back up the hill to enjoy beautiful views of the Whitsundays. BOATHAVEN BEACH Our friends from Just Tuk’n Around told us about this secret little beach behind some of the most expensive homes at Airlie – one is worth $28million! The locals call this “new beach” as it was constructed with imported sand. It’s a tidal beach and there’s a stinger net allowing you and your children to swim safe from the beautiful, but sometimes nasty, creatures of the sea. There are no shade shelters so pack sunscreen and a beach umbrella. Toilet facilities are just across the road
Your Local Families Magazine August / September 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Families Travel DINGO BEACH Dingo Beach is a sandy, reef fringed, tropical beach a short drive from Cape Gloucester, encompassed by a small coastal community at the top of the Whitsundays. You will drive down a rural road through local countryside to emerge in an environment that is quiet and perfect for families. There are no crowds, no hype, no traffic, and no resorts, but secluded beaches and deserted bush settings are plentiful from the numerous walking tracks. Highlights of Dingo Beach include: • sighting migrating whales, dolphins, manta rays, turtles and other marine animals • over 50 species of birdlife – it’s an ornithologists’ paradise • a marine stinger-free swimming enclosure • BBQ facilities • public toilets and showers available at the foreshore • walking the long, sandy and unspoilt beaches CAPE GLOUCESTER RESORT & BEACH Established in 1995 on the eastern shore of Edgecumbe Bay, Cape Gloucester Beach Resort is a small, inviting and environmentally sustainable venue.
It’s about 45-minutes north of Airlie Beach, just past Hideaway Beach down a (sometimes) unpaved road. The resort is quiet and the beach and swimming pool is open to day guests. Plan for a short drive up to the resort to have your lunch or afternoon drinks. THE BOARD WALK Beginning at the sailing club and continuing all the way to Cannonvale Beach 4.7km away, the best part of this walk is the joy kids will experience spotting the many wonderful turtles and sea life. Along this walk there are playgrounds, cafes and bars and the entirety is on flat ground - perfect for the whole family to enjoy.
Airlie Beach Markets Every Saturday morning by the beach Airlie hosts markets selling local foods, delicious coffee, clothes, homewares, posters, toys and even experiences like camel rides. These markets are the perfect place to take a stroll with your family, sample some delicious foods and drinks, and take a moment to soak in the sunshine beside the beach.
WILDLIFE ECO BAY CRUISE FROM AIRLIE BEACH
GREAT BARRIER REEF TOUR - CRUISE WHITSUNDAYS
This leisurely 60-minute wildlife eco cruise departs from the boat hub in Airlie Beach. Keep a lookout for turtles, dugongs, dolphins and spotted eagle rays that frequent the waters of the Whitsundays Region.
We ticked off another item on our school holidays bucket list - a tour and snorkel on the spectacular Great Barrier Reef. Travelling to Hardy Reef with Cruise Whitsundays, the kids loved being able to get amongst it with the coral and reef fish.
This half-day activity is perfect for all ages. It’s fun and educational as you learn about the marine life inhabiting the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Interesting and informative commentary is provided throughout the cruise and be sure to have the camera ready when you see the wildlife in action.
WHITEHAVEN BEACH AND HAMILTON ISLAND FULL DAY TOUR See Hamilton Island in the morning and Whitehaven Beach in the afternoon - or vice-versa - with this full day tour that includes a delicious lunch! Visit two of the Whitsundays region’s key highlights on a comprehensive day tour with one of the region’s awardwinning tour operators, in which you’ll be able to stroll on the sands of what is widely regarded as Australia’s most beautiful beach.
Here is what you need to know: You’ll board one of the region’s premier vessels and depart from the Airlie Beach marina around 8am. You will enjoy a morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea - all provided. The crossing through the open water is bumpy - expect a lot of *motion on the ocean* even on calm weather days. Expect stunning views and a team of staff that will genuinely care about you. During the trip out to the reef, they will ask if you would like to do any dives (for an additional cost) or if you are happy to snorkel (included in the cost). We chose to snorkel and were happy with our decision. At the reef you will pull up alongside a huge pontoon where you can get your wet-suits, stinger suits, life jackets and masks and fins. We spent about 4 hours out at the pontoon snorkelling, having lunch, taking a ride in the semi-submarine (perfect for those who don’t want to get wet!) and admiring the view. I highly recommend this reef trip. Whilst we saw a family with a small baby on board, I would suggest this is suitable for families with upper primary and high school aged kids.
RED CAT ADVENTURES Another exciting way to see the wonders of Airlie Beach and surrounds is with Red Cat Adventures. Their Thundercat day boat offers an exhilarating ride around the Whitsunday Islands all in one day. The Australian award-winning tour visits the world-famous Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet lookout and offers two snorkelling opportunities on the Great Barrier Reef.
WHITSUNDAYS CROCODILE SAFARI This is a must do, and one the kids will absolutely love. Crocodiles at Airlie Beach, while terrifying creatures, are beautiful and fascinating in their own way. You and your family could have the chance to smile at a crocodile on a Whitsunday crocodile safari. It’s a great opportunity to get up close to crocodiles in safety, with an educational aspect with all the cool facts you will learn. It’s guaranteed the kids will be putting this adventure as one of the best yet.
FAMILY FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION AIRLIE BEACH If you are taking kids to Airlie Beach you will want to find the best family friendly accommodation. We have done our homework here too!
To find out more about the beaches, activities mentioned, and our top recommendations for accommodation visit our website: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/things-to-do-at-airlie-beach-with-kids Your Local Families Magazine August / September 2020 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
