Welcome to our Winter Days OUT and Children’s Parties! You probably don’t know this about me, but I’m a much better parent under supervision. Behind closed doors I can be a little snappy, however stick me in a park in front of other parents and you’d be forgiven for thinking Mary Poppins had a cute younger sister (who aged a lot in the last 10 years). If you are planning on having children, or if you currently have children, you must be aware they have birthdays with alarming regularity. As do their siblings. And their school friends. Many decry homeschooling as ‘too hard’, however look who is laughing on birthdays: it’s homeschool parents. A sibling or two, some relatives and maybe a select bunch of delightful friends. Counterpoint to that wholesome experience is my litany of birthday fails, including: • The rained-out park birthday where everyone came to our house and I had to flash clean the kitchen, bathroom and push all the other crap into the bedrooms. • The year I did a ‘healthy’ cake and snacks with handcrafted party bags and the kids looked at me with bewildered eyes wondering what they had been punished for. • The princess party for my daughter where my costume was clearly superior to hers and she cried the whole time, so we swapped outfits and she looked like she had been shrunk. My new philosophy is NO EXPENSE SPARED (for 10 friends or fewer). Laser tag: you got it! Movie crew: jump in the 7-seater. Jumping castle: sure thing! Find a location away from your house (or state a strict end time to the party) and throw money at the problem to save (your) tears and tantrums. I promise you won’t regret it any more than the parties you spent actual time and effort on! Yours in biodegradable party bags and drop and go kids functions,

5 Tips

for managing the mid-year blues As the months become cooler and the days become shorter, the thrill of the new year may have worn off and motivation begins to fade. You may begin to hear “It’s too cold,” “It’s dark,” “I can’t be bothered,” “It’s too hard,” from your children as the midyear blues kick into full swing. So how do you keep your children motivated and manage the mid-year blues?

Set Goals Setting goals at the beginning of each week, month or term helps give clarity to where young people need to give their focus to. It allows them to decide what are the important tasks to complete and what is not a high priority. An idea is to print out the month’s calendar and help them write down what commitments they have on and what schoolwork they have due. The visual display will help children feel more organised and less stressed about what is coming up. When it comes to big tasks, it can be helpful to break them down into smaller sections and set goals of when each part should be completed by. This makes the tasks feel less overwhelming and more achievable. When they reach their goal, children feel a sense of achievement, which encourages them to keep trying and procrastinate less.

Reward Progress Children and teenagers are often driven by extrinsic rewards. It’s beneficial to take time and recognise when they have succeeded at something, for example, completing a task, finishing their chores without being asked and receiving positive feedback from a teacher. By acknowledging and rewarding progress, it gives them a sense of accomplishment, releases dopamine (a ‘feel-good’ hormone) and motivates them to continue to complete those tasks or make improvements. Extrinsic rewards such as having social time with friends, time for play, watching a favourite episode of a tv show, reading etc., can boost mood and motivation to keep going, especially with the more difficult tasks.

Encourage time for fun and play With our lives so full and busy, we can often put play and downtime low on the priority list. Children’s brains are working overtime processing and absorbing information, social situations, school work, along with their own emotions. They need downtime to

6

play, create and unwind. Research suggests that having play time increases creativity and imagination and allows their brains to rest and reset. This aids in increasing productivity, improves concentration as well as assists in retaining the information they learnt during the day.

Aim for best effort vs perfection Encouraging children for their best effort instead on focusing on grades reduces stress and worry. When grades and academic results are what’s prioritised, it can make young people feel pressured and worried and can impact their mental health if they don’t achieve certain grades. Reminding them that it’s ok to make mistakes and to view them as learning moments for the future, and by helping them problem solve what they can do differently next time, it can boost their confidence in trying again and build resilience.

Promote positive wellbeing and good mental health Building a foundation of good physical and mental health begins with having a healthy diet, maintaining good sleep patterns and being active. When these things are out of balance, stress, emotions, relationships, motivation, and behaviour are impacted. Here are some ways to promote positive wellbeing and good mental health:

Your Local Families Magazine June / July 2021 www.familiesmagazine.com.au

Education Quality sleep Developing good sleep habits can be a challenge when competing with the need to feel connected through social media and online gaming, however, it is essential for good mental health. Sleep restores the brain and rejuvenates the body which in turn helps balance hormones and reduces stress. Quality sleep also assists in retaining information from the day and storing it in the memory, helps with concentration and effort in learning, and aids in regulating emotions. Some practical ways of helping your child get a good night’s sleep is to set up sleep habits such as turning off main lights in their bedroom and using a lamp as well as limiting screen time an hour before bed to reduce brain stimulation.

Healthy diet Healthy gut, healthy mind is what is being emphasized in current research. What food our bodies are being fuelled with has the potential to either give long lasting energy and a strong immunity or can weaken immunity and cause fatigue. In our busy lifestyles, it can be easy to grab pre-packaged foods to save time, however they often filled with hidden nasties, and can impact children’s mood, behaviour, and their ability to concentrate. A way of getting kids to eat healthy foods, is to get them involved in the cooking as well as including fruit and vegetables in muffins, fritters and even grated in meals like spaghetti bolognaise.

Get moving There are many benefits to exercise for young people including decreasing stress and improving self-esteem, as well as enhancing concentration and encouraging healthy growth and development. Some ideas for getting your child active is to get them involved in team sports, taking them to the park to run around, encouraging them to play with their pets, walking or riding to school and going for a swim. There still may be highs and lows during this winter season, however, these tips will assist in bringing balance to your children’s mood and motivation. Just like the traditional Christmas markets in Europe, Winterville offers a feast of delicious delights including cheese kranskies, Italian doughnuts, freshly roasted nuts, Belgian waffles, and cinnamon apple wedges. Winter Days Out

Taste Farm Life at these Hidden Gems of Queensland If the hustle and bustle of everyday life is getting you down, it’s time to escape – to the country! Treat your family to a taste of farm life with a getaway to these hidden gems of regional Queensland. Sandy beaches, tropical waves, mocktails by the pool – it all sounds divine but what else could you do for your next family break? With international travel on hold for a good while longer, now is the time to think outside the box for your next family holiday. Australia has an abundance of fabulous family holiday destinations, and Queensland has the very best of them. Queensland provides its locals and visitors the best of both worlds with holiday destinations and day trip offerings to suit everyone’s tastes: you can still have your sandy beaches and tropical waves (our coastal towns make great holiday bases!) and explore regional Queensland’s best farming and food experiences. At Families Magazine we love to travel and share our favourite holiday experiences with you, so to inspire you to ‘get off the beaten track’ we’ve found the best farm experiences, animal interactions, food and wine sampling, and pick-your-own fruit and veggie venues all within convenient day trip distance of Queensland’s regional towns. Scan the QR codes in the snippets below to find full reviews of each day trip - with handy driving maps! - and taste farm life on your next vacation!

Bundaberg

Getting a taste of farm life in the Bundaberg region is easy as there are so many options to consider. We loved our trips to Bundaberg recently where we hung out with goats, lambs, horses, chooks and more. We got to experience all the best things that the local area had to offer and actually taste the local delights too!

16

and you can fill your boots with fresh, juicy strawberries!

If you are in the Bundaberg region you simply must stop in at The Bundaberg Brewed Drink Barrel. Right in town, you can take the True Brew tour to learn about the history of Australia’s favourite ginger beer. We also did the taste testing of all their great flavours (made using local produce)! Yum!

If you are looking for a day trip that involves animals, then you won’t want to miss Splitters Farm. We loved, loved, loved our visit last year. Splitters Farm is a caravan park & farm stay and is just a 10-minute drive north of Bundaberg’s city centre. It is a working cattle farm surrounded by lush tropical bushland and over 3kms of river frontage. The farm is open 7 days to day trippers – we did their self-guided farm tour.

If that inspires you to go out and get your own fresh produce, you will want to head on over to Tinaberries to pick your own strawberries – it is just a 12-minute drive away from The Barrel…

Before you leave Bundaberg, make sure you stop by Alloway Farm Market just 15 minutes out of Bundy to pick up the best locally grown figs you have ever tasted!

Winter Days Out Mackay/Whitsundays

The Mackay region will have you offshore exploring stunning islands one minute, then hitting the open road through vibrant green sugar cane fields the next. To start your day, head to the Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Market for breakfast by the water. Held every Wednesday morning from 6:30am, the market showcases local, fresh produce giving you the opportunity to buy direct from farmers in the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday Region. From there, drive to Ballantyne’s Strawberry Farm to pick the most delicious strawberries, and blueberries too, depending on the time of year you visit.

Cairns

Back on the road, cruise through the Mackay hinterland to Freckle Farm, home to the happiest farm animals in the region. This is the perfect spot to stop for a picnic lunch plus a tour of the working farm. Bookings are essential.

There is so much more to the Atherton and Port Douglas region than breathtaking beaches, world famous reefs and heritage listed rainforest. Take time to explore some of the hidden gems that this region has to offer. A trip to Jaques Coffee plantation just outside Mareeba, is the chance to learn about how coffee is grown by doing a plantation tour. Go inside the factory and roastery and listen to behind-the-scenes commentary before sampling some of the best coffee around. After your coffee, head to Gallo Dairyland just outside Atherton to see an operational dairy farm in action. Kids will love visiting the baby animals while parents will enjoy lunch with a view, finished with a delicious cheese platter. On selected days of during the week, be sure to visit Rainforest Bounty where you can see native fruits being grown and turned into gourmet produce. Taste Cape York Lilly Pilly Chutney, Boonjie Tamarind Vinegar and Ooray Plum Spicy Sauce, an entirely new category of food product. Our special mention is Kinrara Expeditions, who do 5-day tours from Cairns to the timeless volcanic lands south of the Tablelands. Experience life off the grid on a unique cattle station as you have never known it before and explore ancient lands as you canoe, hike and reconnect with nature.

Toowoomba region

Toowoomba is an easy drive from Brisbane and a great base from which to explore the Southern and Darling Downs. Perched on a plateau of The Great Dividing Range, the panoramic views are incredible, inspiring you to explore the gems hidden in its rural landscape.

To round out the day, a visit to the famous Sarina Sugar Shed is a must! Learn how sugar is made in the miniature working sugar mill and distillery topped off with the chance to taste something sweet

Townsville region

From the coast to the outback; after dipping your toes in the waves at The Strand, head inland for a totally different holiday experience. Heading into the “wild” west - just over an hourand-a-half’s drive from Townsville - will see you at Leahton Park, Australia’s “Texas in the Outback”. Here, you can take a horsedrawn wagon tour across the plains to see Texas Longhorn Cattle with horns spanning up to 3 metres and even buffalo and bison! Your tour includes cowboy coffee or billy tea brewed on an open campfire, but that’s not all that this wonderful venue has to offer – you will just have to see it for yourselves!

J2J Pastoral in Goomburra and Gleneden Family Farm in Maryville are both working farms an hour’s drive south of Toowoomba. Although practically neighbours, each offers visitors a different experience, and you can easily experience both in the same day. At J2J Pastoral, kids can roll up their sleeves to help the farmer feed his cattle, collect eggs, and bottle feed the calves, just like real farmers do. Up the road at Gleneden, you can see traditional farming displays in action, including bullock driving, blacksmithing, whip making and cracking, and holistic, regenerative farming practices. You can even purchase fresh produce from the farm shop. Heading north for your next day trip, horse lovers are in for a treat! You can “Cowboy Up” for a trail ride through a working cattle property, seated in a comfortable western saddle atop a goodnatured – and possibly even movie famous – Quarter Horse. If just one horsey encounter isn’t enough, your next day trip will take you on a farm tour at Hoofprints of Change. Here, the stock horses will be your teachers, helping you reconnect away from the busyness of life. You will come away refreshed, and maybe with a basket of fresh farm produce! At Queensland Dairy & Heritage Museum, 2.5 hours north of Toowoomba, your family can learn all about rural life as an early settler. With displays of how farming was in the past, children can take a step back in time to see how farming has changed over the generations and might even be lucky enough to help make some butter by hand with one of the volunteers.

If you’re heading north from Townsville, Frosty Mango is a must-visit waypoint. It’s the perfect place to refresh with fresh homemade ice creams, pancakes, coffees and sandwiches in a lovely tropical fruit orchard setting. While you are there, don’t forget to grab your photo with the big Mango Man before heading on your way with your delicious and exotic fresh fruity produce.

Party Time

Party in the Park! Park parties are a brilliant way to celebrate a child’s birthday without breaking the bank or getting into a party venue one-upmanship battle with other parents. And we all know that kids love going to the park, so it is an easy solution that suits all budgets and families. Parks offer a range of facilities including BBQs, playground equipment, toilets blocks and lots of space to run off all the additional energy they are about to eat with all the sweet treats at the party. Parks usually have ample parking and shade too, so they make a perfect family friendly venue. However, before you commit to a party in your local park, here are our 10 tips for making sure you have everything in place to make your party pop!

Do you need to book your park?

If you are looking to hold a party in a local council park, you may need to book the space ahead of time. All the best parks (and all the best locations within the park) often get booked up ahead of time, so check your local council website for your park of choice to ensure your preferred space is available for your event.

No booking? No problem!

If you don’t need to book your park, and you plan on going to a popular park on a weekend, you are going to need to send an advance party to secure your preferred location. In most families, this means sending Grandad ahead of time to sit at the gazebo/BBQ table/picnic area reading the newspaper until the main party arrives. It is his job to fend off any potential usurpers to the party HQ.

Will your party have a theme?

Whether it is dinosaurs, princesses, Frozen, Star Wars or something else, if you want to have a themed party you will need to do some planning ahead. Decorations will need to be secured, party favours packed and the cake baked (or ordered). Again, the key to success here is all in the planning ahead. You will need to pack them carefully to be transported to the park of choice on the morning of the party.

18

Facilities at the park You may find that the park of choice lends itself greatly to your theme or you may choose a theme and then find a park that suits. Many parks will have facilities that help your creative juices flow. Look for dragons, castles, planes and rocket-ships at your local park. Other great themes for a park party are ‘Adventures’, ‘Fairies’, ‘Water Play’ or ‘Pirates’. Make sure your chosen park has working BBQs (you may want to check these beforehand to ensure they are in working order), and water fountains, suitable toilets (you may need to BYO toilet paper and soap/sanitiser just in case), seating and shade.

Decorating a park party Once the theme has been decided, decorating gets easier. There are many places where you can buy decorations themed to match your party. Remember to grab some banners, signs, paper plates and cups as well as party favour bags and a tablecloth. As you are outside, you may get gusts of wind playing havoc with your decorations, so consider what you can use as weights to keep items in their places for the duration. Pack a ‘tool-box’ with string, zip ties, tape, scissors etc to help you put up your decorations. Remember anything you put up, must be taken down again. Don’t forget to take rubbish bags with you to stash your trash, and if the bins are full, take your excess rubbish home with you.

Your Local Families Magazine June / July 2021 www.familiesmagazine.com.au

Party Time Catering for your park party Due to transportation, park party food needs to be either pre-made at home or easily cooked on a BBQ. Cold finger foods such as mini sandwiches, slices, cupcakes, savoury muffins and pikelets are all great choices. For hot foods nothing beats BBQ sausages, chicken kebabs and mini meat patties with sauce. It’s also a good idea to organise someone other than yourself to do the BBQing; it’s impossible to cook and entertain party guests simultaneously.

Party games for outdoor parties There is no end to the kinds of games you can play with kids during the party in the park. You just need to bear the potential weather in mind. We love these: • 3 legged races • Limbo • Hide and Go Seek

• Potato sack races • Tug-o-war • Tiggy

Or just let them loose to play in the playground and make up their own games!

Do a reconnaissance drive-by a week prior Just like checking to ensure the BBQs are working prior to the party, you should do a drive-by and walk through on the same day of the week beforehand to see how busy the park is. Is there adequate parking? Is there enough shade? Is the playground fenced and/or close to the road? Is there anything else happening that you will need to be aware of in advance. This should give you some ideas about bringing (or asking your guests to bring) additional seating, picnic rugs, perhaps a pop up shade tent and warning your guests about potential traffic issues.

Wet weather plan Should the worst happen, and it rains on the day of your party, you will need to have a wet weather plan to enact. You have two choices 1) call off the party and reschedule for a different day or 2) relocate to a new indoor venue. It is a good idea to have this alternate information on the invitation and have everyone’s mobile phone numbers in your own phone just in case. Once the decision is made, let everyone know as soon as possible and hopefully there will be little disruption.

Try to enjoy yourself Hosting a party of any type can be stressful but if you make a plan in advance, follow our tips and ask for help from family and friends you may find that a park party will be one of the most cost effective, enjoyable celebrations that you can have to celebrate your child’s birthday! HOW TO CHOOSE

A Good Drama School FOR YOUR CHILD

‘Drama school’ is a place where students learn performance skills for stage and screen. You might also have heard titles like ‘actor’s studio’ or ‘drama academy’ or ‘theatre school’, which are all similar names for the same thing.

Drama, or acting, is a fantastic opportunity for your child to grow. Think about it: when a child steps out on stage, they must draw on a powerhouse of courage to carry off what’s required in front of an audience. They embody a character as part of a story – showing empathy and imagination. They have to speak up, allow their voice to travel and express their character’s opinions emotionally. They have to remember lines and cues, so they’re employing significant brainpower. And, more often than not, they’re working in a team to make it all happen. And that’s just on stage. If they’re acting for the camera, they must do many of the same things – conscious that a camera is watching them and their performance is to be preserved for all time. This all might make acting sound like a stressful activity for kids – but actually it’s tremendous fun! Kids love the playful aspect of performance, the chance to be seen and heard, the chance to be in the limelight, and the chance to pretend to be someone or something else from outside their day-to-day existence. Acting is surrounded with laughter and creativity and excitement. And often it’s these things they focus on in drama school, while they’re unknowingly learning life skills at the same time.

So what makes a good drama school? A Safe Space Not every drama school has a healthy ethos. Back in the day, some of Australia’s leading actor training institutions at university level were known for breaking people down so they could rebuild them again as ‘actors’ in their own likeness. Now we have a greater understanding of emotional health concerns that methodology is long gone, and you want to make sure your child is in a happy and healthy environment in drama class. That’s not to say they won’t ever experience performance anxiety or stage fright due to the challenges of acting – there are some in-built

22

Parenting

vulnerabilities: standing up in front of others, thinking on your feet, being under the spotlight… but you can at least find out how a drama school manages these things. At Perform Australia, for example, many students describe drama class as their ‘safe space’ where they can be themselves, try new things, and connect with others.

The Teachers How a drama class feels is largely shaped by the teachers, so I’d advise parents to take a look at your drama school’s website. Are the teachers qualified in an aspect of the performing arts (acting, musical theatre, drama education, etc.)? A trained actor, musical theatre performer or drama teacher will have more to bring to the program than someone who isn’t. And check out the curriculum too – does the school have a structured program of learning? Or is it ad hoc, week to week?

Performances Drama schools sometimes run theatrical performances, plays, showcases or concerts. These can be large or small, they can be in-class or in a theatre. It’s difficult for drama schools to stage large performances every term as theatre hire is so very expensive these days, and there are so many performance skills to learn in class time quite aside from the rehearsal process. It’s also important to understand that rehearsing a play takes time – you can’t whip up a production overnight. An old rule of thumb from the acting world is that it takes one hour to fully rehearse one minute of text for the stage. And that’s for the professionals! With kids there’s so much additional learning involved. There’s blocking (where you stand and where you move to), line delivery, managing

props, vocal expression, character building, learning about comic timing, and more. So, when you watch a student performance, bear in mind the amount of time the students had to prepare it. If they can successfully produce a ten-minute play in ten-week term, they’re doing very well! While we want every performance to be amazing, often there are children at different stages of development in a performance. It’s important to have some appreciation of this. One seasoned young actor might be brimming with confidence onstage, while another child may be barely heard. But even for the quiet child, who is intensely shy and in their first term of drama, getting up and playing a role is a huge achievement, which ought to be acknowledged and applauded. Next time they will do better – and the time after that, better still. It’s all about growth. Self-confidence comes from this process of skill repetition and mastery. Screen performances can also be great experiences for the kids – plus, they have something to keep that they can show friends and family. Like theatre hire, filmmaking is an expensive endeavour – consider cameras and lighting and editing, which all require skilled personnel. But the memento of a little film made as a child is a wonderful thing… and something to bring out again on a 21st birthday! So when you’re next looking for a drama school for your child, think: safety and support, personal growth, and performance. If you find these in a drama school, you are onto a winner.
