Welcome to our summer days out and clubs, classes & activities issue! Are you ready to sweat at home! Summer is coming, and with domestic and international border uncertainty we will either be vying for the last few rentals in a 200km radius or having holidays at home. For us this means coming to terms with downgraded living conditions - we can’t afford a pool and the aircon is only for use between 11 and 3 (it’s called SOLAR kids, it needs the sun). Maybe it’s time to permanently reserve a seat at the cinema! I’ve also just purchased a Gumtree air fryer so we can spend the summer playing “can we fry it?”. I know I’m late to the party, but I thought the Thermomix would change my life forever and I have trouble processing grief and loss. This new machine will be the answer for sure! It might not make sense to make superheated foodstuff in the peak of summer, however as long as we do so between 11 and 3 the aircon can carry the weight of our decadent lifestyle. It’s also a great opportunity for a pop-up science lesson with the kids. Create a little diorama of the house, family, and pets and pop it in the air fryer for 30mins on 220 degrees. Happy climate change, kids! Me and the grandparents made it for you! If you are not into superheating food and watching the kids trash your house, then consider visiting the best outdoor places to swim these holidays. We have a comprehensive list and it’s probably kinder to the earth than running an air fryer and an aircon all summer.

Education
How to apply for a scholarship...
AND GET IT!
The word ‘scholarship’ has connotations to it. It speaks of exclusivity and an invitation into a world of privilege. This misconception can often halt families in their tracks before they even consider the process. Scholarships, bursaries and selective entry criteria are part and parcel of how many Brisbane high schools operate. If you are considering a private school – or selective entry school – experience for your child, you would do well to consider if a scholarship could be a potential course of action for your family. Let’s break down some of those preconceived ideas and unpack what a scholarship is and how you would go about securing one for your child.
6
Your Local Families Magazine December 2021 / January 2022 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Education
The difference between a scholarship, a bursary and selective entry Many private schools offer both scholarships and bursaries for families, but it can be difficult to identify the difference. A scholarship is a competitive process (meaning that the number of students vying for a place is higher than the number of available positions) wherein students must demonstrate merit. Your child may excel in a particular field, like academics, music, or sport, or may do very well on an entrance exam. A bursary is a non-competitive process that is usually based on financial need but can sometimes be related to distance for rural families. Bursaries mean that the school can provide education for a wider student body and award equal opportunities to community members. You’ll find that many schools offer both assistance packages. Brisbane Girls Grammar, for example, has several options available for girls who demonstrate the characteristics of a “Grammar Girl” – curious, principled, adventurous, balanced and independent - and might otherwise be unable to attend the school for financial reasons. Selective entry refers to the process at certain state schools (sometimes known as an Excellence Program) where students from
outside the catchment may be granted enrolment if they fulfil certain criteria. Scholarships, bursaries and selective entries are great for the school and the student. Not only does it mean that children have access to a wider range of education options, but it also promotes diversity within the student population and culture. It’s a great example of social justice in action and increases the breadth of the school community.
The types of scholarship assistance available Your school of choice may offer full or partial scholarships depending on a variety of factors. Many schools offer academic scholarships. Your child will have to participate in an entrance exam (more on that a little later) and demonstrate academic capabilities across a range of subjects. Your child may be interested in a sporting scholarship. Typically speaking, to qualify one would expect that your child has participated in their sport at a high representative level. There would be a similar expectation that your child would continue to participate in the sport throughout their tenure at the school. Similarly, a music scholarship may be an option. A certain level of competency and commitment in the study of the instrument would

Education
have to be demonstrated. There would also be an expectation that your child would continue to study their instrument of choice. The inclusion of such specialised scholarships guarantees the growth of a rich, varied and disciplined educational environment that acknowledges individual skill and talent.
Some schools will have their own testing process, which may involve a short answer exam and a timed written response component. If this is applicable to your school of choice you will receive information on it beforehand so that your child may have time to prepare.
Lastly, you may well find that your school of choice offers an ‘all-rounder’ scholarship (or something similar). If your child is a consistently high performer across a range of areas but is not considered a specialist in any particular one, they still may well be in the running.
All school scholarship applications will involve an interview after application as part of their process, as well as the opportunity for your child to provide evidence of their achievements and merit. Ideally, the interview will be an informal conversation where the school attempts to ‘get to know’ your child. This works best if your child is relaxed and feeling confident – try to help settle their nerves instead of increasing them.
IES College in Spring Hill provides a new approach to high school for years 11 and 12. They offer the International Baccalaureate Program in a multi-cultural and diverse college setting, with no uniform and a later start time to the day. The scholarships available include Academic Excellence, Diversity & Belonging, and Leadership.
The process involved in getting a scholarship, bursary or being granted selective entry The vast majority of school scholarships involve students sitting for either an ACER test or an Edutest. Both tests are digital and are based on ability and achievement. Preparation for these tests can be done, but for the most part the questions are ‘general knowledge’. The best way to prepare your child is to have them read widely, think critically, and review their common core curriculum concepts prior to testing.
8
Decisions about scholarship recipients will be made with great consideration. You will not receive an immediate answer but the school will contact you to let you know either way once they have made their decision. St Peters Lutheran College offers a variety of scholarships, some of which, like their Excellence Scholarship, are merit based. The Excellence Scholarship covers tuition fees and is awarded to children entering years 7-11 who show strong general ability plus a high level of excellence in at least one co-curricular area. Applications need to be made by June 1 of the previous school year. They also offer Academic Scholarships, Boarding Scholarships, and Rural Leadership Scholarships.
Your Local Families Magazine December 2021 / January 2022 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Education When to start applying for scholarships Scholarships are usually open to a number of student year levels. As a result, the process begins sooner than you may think. Testing and interviews will typically take place in the first two terms for entry in the following school year. Awarding scholarships and bursaries is not a decision the school takes lightly – it needs to be a considered process to ensure that the funds are going to the right family. Your best bet would be to get in contact with your school of choice early and to work with them towards the timeline that they have set.
How do you ensure you get a scholarship? There’s no secret formula to success. If your child can demonstrate that they are: Exceptional in their specific area of speciality significant ‘all-rounder’ with the potential to value add to A their cohort rom a family whose financial situation is precluding them F from a private school education then you are in with a chance. There’s nothing to lose – give it a go! Get in contact with the school of your dreams today. Summer Days Out
I C E S K AT I N G the coolest summer activity!
Ice skating in Brisbane – it’s like bobsledding in Jamaica! Brisbane, with all its sunshine, might seem a long way down your list of possible ice skating destinations, but amazingly Brisbane has TWO Olympic-sized ice skating rinks. With a cool internal temperature of 10 degrees, Iceworld Boondall and Iceworld Acacia Ridge are the best places to be this upcoming school summer holiday! We took some young reviewers along to see what Iceworld had to offer.
ICEWORLD Whether you’re a beginner or an expert Iceworld will soon be your favourite entertainment venue. As you enter the rink you’ll instantly feel refreshed and revitalised. The music and lights will dazzle you, the skating will surprise you, and - most importantly - you’ll be as cool as ice!
Iceworld offers casual skating and lessons for all ages. If you are an adult, it’s still not too late to learn to skate like a professional! WHY TAKE KIDS ICE SKATING? Ice skating boasts a range of health and developmental benefits for kids (or parents) looking for a different form of exercise. It’s a great way to get a workout without feeling like you’re working out. Ice skating: • can build stamina and cardio-vascular health • can dramatically improve balance and co-ordination • improves upper body strength (especially figure skating) • develops muscle and flexibility • is fun for all ages and a great school holiday activity Ice skating may not be the first sport you think of in our sunny climate but it’s a fantastic way to escape the heat and have fun!
OUR ICE SKATING REVIEWERS Our seven young reviewers ranged in age from just 5-years-old to 15, with most skating for the very first time. The friendly staff did a great job of fitting them with their free hire skates and answering their many questions, like:

Is ice skating easy? Quite easy once you get used to it. Confidence helps!
How do you ice skate? It’s a bit like walking, but keep your knees slightly bent and push a little with your back leg.
Does it hurt to fall down? It might, but you can hang on to the sides or use a penguin to help you keep your balan
There were heaps more questions to be asked and answered but the kids were raring to go. After handing out penguins to those who wanted them, the gate was opened and the kids let loose on the ice.
OUR REVIEWERS ON THE ICE Our reviewers were joined on the ice by those parents willing to potentially embarrass themselves, and a wonderful Iceworld Boondall staff member to show them the basics. With a little help, everyone gradually found their balance and began with several steady laps of the rink. The kids took to ice skating like (slightly wobbly) ducks to water, daring each other to go faster, abandon the penguins, and venture away from the wall. To say they had a blast is an understatement! most nervous and reluctant amongst them were grinning as they picked themselves up from the ice and dusted themselves down. As the rink filled with more regular skaters, we saw some amazing talent. Pirouettes and figure skating moves were made to look easy, and groups of friends glided gracefully along. We were there on a Sunday morning, which is a popular time, but the older children and adults were very mindful of the younger ones and beginners. I think all our reviewers fell at least once, but they were quickly back up and laughing, ready to try again. After an hour or so it was time to break for refreshments.
ICEWORLD COFFEE SHOPS Both Iceworld venues have fully stocked cafes serving barista coffee and a selection of hot and cold drinks, freshly made sandwiches and muffins, yoghurts, and a range of hot food package deals. Our reviewers enjoyed two trips to the coffee shop; once to warm up with a yummy hot chocolate and the second time to fill up on a delicious lunch! Coffee was just what the parents needed, and the hot food deals are reasonably priced and include chips and a small drink. There’s easily enough for smaller children to share a meal.
ICEWORLD – THE KIDS’ VERDICT
Iceworld Skate School runs during each school term and is suitable for ages 3yrs and above. The program caters for all abilities, from basic through to advanced levels. With professional coaching from Iceworld’s certified team of coaches, skaters work together with their instructors and fellow classmates in a positive social environment. It’s a blast!
ICE SPORTS The journey into the world of ice sports has so many paths to choose! Both Iceworld ice skating rinks are owned by Ice Skating Queensland (ISQ), Queensland’s peak governing body for the figure skating disciplines of Single Skating, Pair Skating, Ice Dance, Synchronized Skating and Theatre on Ice. ISQ offers a variety of membership options that open a whole new world of opportunities for the keen skater in a host of different ice sports. Try: • ICE HOCKEY – perfect for active teens, available for kids over 12 and adults under 60. • CURLING LESSONS during the winter months (Boondall only)
Without a doubt, the kids all loved it! If it wasn’t for the fact that we busy parents had
• SYNCHRONISED SKATING – a great activity for siblings and involves glitter, dance and sparkles!
Although it is really cold in the ice rink, the activity kept the kids surprisingly warm. In fact, so much activity and so toasty warm that one of our young reviewers fell asleep while the others were getting their shoes on!
• SPEED SKATING – not for the meek! Learn the fastest ice sport in the world and maybe compete at a national or international level!
other chores waiting we’d never have got them out of there! Yes, there were a few bumps and tumbles, but so much fun and laughter.
The children loved that they could take a break and then go back out on the ice whenever they wanted. The penguins were great for helping with balance and confidence, and there were enough experienced skaters there to inspire the kids to want to go back again to “be like them”. The casual ice skating prices are very reasonable, ranging from $10-$20 depending on age and session. The facilities are clean, well maintained, and the staff very friendly and accommodating. The kids got an amazing amount of exercise and had a great time. It’s definitely a venue to consider for a birthday party if you want to be the ‘cool’ parent!
Iceworld can host your child’s ice skating birthday party any weekend of the year at either of their venues. The price per child includes admission and skate hire, decorated party area, food and drinks, a party host and a 15-minute demonstration on the basics of ice skating.
WHERE TO GO ICE SKATING IN BRISBANE You will find Iceworld ice skating rinks at 1179 Beaudesert Road, Acacia Ridge, and 2304 Sandgate Road, Boondall. For more information, visit www.iceworld.com.au

Summer Days Out
BEST OF THE BAY!
FAMILY FRIENDLY DAY TRIP FROM BRISBANE TO THE BAY ISLANDS
Recently we took the kids out to snorkel the Tangalooma shipwrecks on a day trip with a company called River to Bay. Right up front I need to let you know that our trip was hosted by the company, but as always, our review is an honest account of our experience. If snorkelling the Tangalooma wrecks has been on your bucket list for ever read on my friend. This article is going to show you just how easy it is and how much fun you will have on this exciting day trip from the Brisbane River. River to Bay is the result of a long-held dream to connect the people of Brisbane and the city’s river to the attractions of Moreton Bay and its islands. River to Bay entered a partnership with the Queensland Government to build a fleet of fast tour boats. Their boats are large enough to provide safety and comfort but small enough to travel the river at high speed with minimal impact to the environment. River to Bay is locally owned and operated.
WHAT DO RIVER TO BAY OFFER? If you jump on the River to Bay website, you will see that they offer a number of tours both on the Brisbane River and into the Bay. Their river cruises include sight-seeing tours and food and drink tours, and the bay tours they offer include the Tangalooma Day Cruise and the Best of Moreton Bay Cruise. We did the Best of Moreton Bay Cruise.
BEST OF MORETON BAY CRUISE Here’s how it went: 8:00am – arrive Northshore Harbour Cafe We arrived on time at the Northshore Harbour Cafe and grabbed a cup of coffee. If you don’t know about this lovely family friendly cafe, it has a playground next door, great food and a lovely atmosphere. It’s a great place for parents to catch up on weekdays too! 8:30am – depart Northshore Harbour We boarded the boat with around 20 other people and listened to the safety briefing before we set off. We also were introduced to our crew – Zac, Ed and Thommo. During the trip over to the Tangalooma shipwrecks, Ed spoke to every person to ask a few questions about our swimming ability, any medical conditions they needed to know about and if there was anything we wanted to tell them. I told them I was a bit nervous about the snorkelling as I am pretty unfit and I worried about my ability to swim the length of the shipwreck. I had a fright on the
12
Great Barrier Reef last year where I drifted out further than I expected and had to swim back to the boat… Ed reassured me that he would look after me. During the trip out we were given our wet suits, fins, masks and, if we wanted them, a pool noodle (I took one!). The trip over was smooth in terms of the *motion on the ocean*… indeed much smoother than I thought it would be! However, you still need to maintain 3 points of contact when moving about the boat! Families Tip: It is a good idea to arrive in your swimsuit and put your wet suit on during the boat trip over so that you maximise your time in the water. Once we arrived, we picked up Andrew (another River to Bay staff member who had come over on the boat that leaves from Bribie Island) to help us navigate snorkelling the wrecks. He gave us the lowdown on what the wrecks are and what we will see, as well as how to navigate them. 10:00am–11:00am - Snorkel Tangalooma Wrecks After listening to the talk we got our kit on (wet-suits, fins and masks) and jumped off the back of the boat into the water. We were there in October; the day temperature was 28 degrees, the water temperature was 22 degrees. The wet suits meant that we didn’t feel the cool of the water at all!
Your Local Families Magazine December 2021 / January 2022 www.familiesmagazine.com.au
Summer Days Out
At this point I have to give a huge shout out to Andrew, who clearly had been told by Ed that I was nervous about being swept away by the current. Andrew offered to stay with me and took a life-ring with him that I could hold on to as HE navigated the wrecks with the group. He is an ABSOLUTE LEGEND for doing that. He did make it perfectly clear that he didn’t usually personally escort (read: tow unfit) people around the wrecks, but he could see I was nervous. Bless him for his kindness!! The shipwreck is amazing! I have seen it many times from afar and from the top of the water. Earlier in the year we did a glass bottom boat trip from Tangalooma to see it and feed the fish (you can read about that on our website), but I had always wanted to actually snorkel on the wreck – and I did… with the aforementioned help! You start the snorkel at one end of the wreck (depending on the tide and current) and snorkel your way with the group to the other end. You will see many, many fish and coral living in and on the wrecks. The boat meets you are the other end so you don’t have to swim all the way back again!
WHAT WILL YOU SEE DURING YOUR SNORKEL? There is a section called the *Fish Tank* and another section called *The Oasis* that are home to so many fish that you will almost definitely come into contact with a few. You don’t need to try to touch them, they just are so chill about you being there that they swim near you, and you may contact them as you swim. As well as fish and coral, you could see turtles, wobbegong sharks and dugongs! Andrew told us he saw a whale and her calf on their way across the bay from Bribie on the other boat! 12:15pm–1:45pm - Stradbroke Island After seeing all the wrecks it’s time to jet off to Little Ship Club for lunch on Stradbroke Island. Lunch is included in the price of your trip and was delicious. We chose the hamburgers, barramundi, fish and chips and chicken parmigiana – which was as big as my head! After lunch we went for a walk through the islands cemetery and tried to spot a koala, to no avail.
with a little bit of the island’s history, and we got to look at some of the ruins. We didn’t get to see the actual main ruins/prison area as that was a bit too far away for us to get to on this trip. 4:00pm - Return to Northshore Harbour After leaving St Helena Island. the weather, whilst still sunny with few clouds, got REALLY windy. I am not going to lie, while the trip out was super smooth, it was super bumpy on the way back. I was a bit scared of the bumping of the boat on the way back to the river. We hit a freak large wave and we were sprayed with water and saturated. Well, I was, as I was on that side of the boat. The journey back to enter the mouth of the river took around 45 minutes the bumps and waves made me nervous. Meanwhile the kids... We arrived back at Northshore Harbour at 5pm.
THE NITTY GRITTY The prices are $149 for adults, $119 for kids aged 3-13, or a family pass is available for two adults and two kids at $419, saving you $117. We have an exclusive Families Magazine discount code available for bookings made up to 13 March 2022. Save 20% off all tour options when you use FAMILIES20. Book online at rivertobay.com.au. Inclusions: Boat trip, wet-suits, masks, fins, pool noodles, lunch. They also had rain jackets available, which they offered us to protect us from wave spray on the way home. There is a small marine toilet on the boat. There are also toilets at the Stradbroke Island stop.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS TRIP TO FAMILIES? Hand on heart I would recommend this trip as suitable for families with kids aged 3+, and best suited for those over 8 and/or confident swimmers. It is well organised, safe, fun and will create great memories for years to come. 5 stars! Highly recommend.
2:15pm–3:15pm - St Helena Island After our stop at Straddie we got back on our boat and went over to St Helena Island. We were running a little behind time by this point, so it was a quick stop on the island. The crew gave us a talk

The Gorge, Lake Moogerrah
Stony Creek, Woodford
About 2.5km downstream from Lake Moogerah’s spillway, The Gorge camping ground is a secluded and beautifully shaded camping hideaway with a 200m-long swimming hole. It’s around 1.5m deep in most parts and there’s an even deeper pool upstream which you’ll often see daring teenagers and the young at heart jumping fr om. It goes without saying to always check the depth of the water and look out for submerged objects before jumping in.
There are two swimming holes at Stony Creek, one is more like a creek wading area and the larger one like a pool/swimming hole where you can take your inflatables or even a kayak. At the northern end there are more rock pools and a small waterfall to explore, and plenty of options too!

Nearby, there’s also a huge enclosed seawater wading pool, and plenty of places to picnic or dine. Scan the QR code to see what else there is for families to do at Wynnum.
Wellington Point Wellington Point has a sheltered beach area with little wave action, fantastic giant climbing trees, and a fun playground. At low tide, you can walk across the sandbar to King Island and spot many sea creatures along the way. The nearby town centre has lots of dining options, or you can take a picnic to eat at the Wellington Point Reserve park. Scan the QR code to see what else there is for families to do at Wellington Point.
Red Beach, Bribie Island Red Beach is the perfect place for a family day out, including your four-legged friends. It has plenty of space to run and will definitely tire all members of the family out. It’s a great place for an afternoon stroll. This beach has no amenities, so be prepared; however this doesn’t dampen the wide-open space to roam in. Scan the QR code to find even more of the best beaches around Brisbane.
And 1 great water park! WhiteWater World Dreamworld’s WhiteWater World is a full day of fun for kids of all ages. From Wiggle Bay for the littlies with its mini slides and water cannons, to the Pipeline Plunge adventure playground with a giant tipping bucket, and the thrills of Fully Six water slides and the “cave of Waves”, there is something for everyone! Why not really splurge and book a cabana hut with a mini refrigerator as base camp? Scan the QR code to find out more about WhiteWater World for families.

BEST CAR GAMES FOR ROAD TRIPS School holidays and car trips go hand in hand, so we’ve dug deep and found the best car games for kids to play on long journeys. For these travel games you will not need any chargers, batteries, or materials. You just need your imagination, patience, and voices.
SPOTTO
CHEESE PLEASE!
Whenever you spot a yellow vehicle, you shout “Spotto”. You can make up your own rules in terms of what vehicles count (e.g. bus, taxi, car, motorbike etc.) and how much yellow paintwork needs to be visible. The winner can be the first person to get to 10, or the one to make the most “Spottos” in a specific time period. Once the rules are agreed you proceed to call out “Spotto” every time you see an appropriate vehicle.
This one is going to give you a case of the giggles. The person who is ‘up’ must close their eyes. Someone else in the car then has to say “CHEESE PLEASE” in the funniest, weirdest voice they can muster! The player who had their eyes closed has to correctly guess who said CHEESE PLEASE otherwise it’s their turn to be up again. Definitely one of the silliest, kids’ car games!
NUMBER PLATE GAME
Animal? Mineral? Vegetable? If it’s your turn you choose ‘something’ to be. You can only answer yes or no to any questions. If you receive 20 questions before someone has correctly guessed what you are then you win!
Each player takes turns to make a clever phrase out of the letters of a numberplate. This could involve the driver or front seat passenger being the judge and nominating a number plate for the challenge. The number plate 123-ABC, for example, could be Astronauts Bouncing Carefully, or something as silly as Aardvarks Burp Cheese.
I’M GOING ON A PICNIC I’m going on a picnic is often played in schools as it enhances memory, concentration and communication skills. The first person starts off with “I’m going on a picnic and I’m taking …” and fills in an item (let’s say ‘bread’ for this example). The second person adds their element but has to remember what the first person said as well. “I’m going on a picnic and I’m taking jam and bread”. The game continues with each person having to remember all the items that came beforehand. See how many your family can get to in this really challenging game!
20 QUESTIONS
Our tip: Maybe try playing this one closer to the start of the trip. The last thing you want is more questions if you’re already hearing a lot of “Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”
INITIAL ANSWERS Radio stations often play this with contestants which makes it a really great car game for kids. Keep your eye on the clock. Give a player a letter (for example – A). They get ten questions in one minute and each of their answers has to correspond with that letter. You can ask questions like – Animal? Antelope. City? Adelaide. Job? Accountant. Watch the time tick down and the excitement build as the kids do their best to beat the clock!
NAME GAME This car game for kids is similar to Scattergories and is a really great car game for kids who need a little help focusing and calming down.
HAPPY TRAVELS WITH THE BEST CAR GAMES FOR KIDS! 18
Decide on a category (for example – boys’ names). Cycle through the car one at a time and everyone has to say a boy’s name corresponding with the next letter in the alphabet. Allan, Bill, Cooper, Dale and so on. This can get tricky and heated the further up the scales you go!
TELL A STORY WORD BY WORD Once. Upon. A. Time. There. Was. A. Car. Ask everyone in your family to listen to the story and add their own contribution word by word. Invariably, this can turn quite silly and funny very quickly. You’ll quickly see why this is one of the best car games for kids the further your tribe gets into the story.
TRAVELLER’S ALPHABET The last of our literacy games, Traveller’s Alphabet is in a similar vein to Name Game. Each player will cycle through the alphabet and tell everyone where they are going and what they are doing there. “I’m going to Adelaide to do acrobatics” “I’m going to Bali to bellydance” See what your crew comes up with for X!
THE QUIET GAME Depending on your level of exhaustion, this may be the best car game for kids of them all. The rules are simple – the winner is the person who can be quietest for longest. My kids actually love this game and ASK to play it!!)
The thing we like most about our list is the involvement and enjoyment that everyone in the family will get out of them. Even your reluctant too-cool teen will come around and start giggling along with the rest of them. www.familiesmagazine.com.au/best-car-games-for-kids

Organise a street party Go carolling A good old Christmas sing-along is sure to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. Local councils and shopping centres often host free family events, with stage shows, carolling, parades, Santa visits and lots of Christmas magic. It’s a chance for the whole family to sing along, dance, and get-together with friends and family for some light-hearted fun. Check out your local council’s and shopping centre’s websites to find out what’s happening in your area. Check our local carolling guide here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/ christmas-carols-in-brisbane
Helping others, and receiving help Making a difference to someone else’s Christmas is the best way to share the Christmas spirit and teach children the value of helping others. This can be as simple as explaining to your children why you are a putting food or gifts into the charity food containers or giving trees at the shopping centre, or volunteering your time at an established charity. This article lists all the ways you can help at charities in Australia at Christmas AND how you can receive help if you are in need: https://christmasinaustralia. com.au/christmas-charities-inaustralia/
It’s time to revive an old Aussie tradition and get to know your neighbours again! A letterbox drop down your street can be the starting point for a great neighbourly get-together. You can arrange for everyone to bring a table and chairs and a plate to share at the local park, or apply to the council for special permission to close your street for a few hours. We have some great food and games ideas right here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/ christmas-street-party-ideas

Browse the Christmas markets Christmas markets are filled with festive atmosphere, tempting aromas, and a joyous goodwill. They’re the perfect place to find hand-crafted and individual gifts and baked goodies, and often have entertainment too. There are Christmas markets across Brisbane from mid-November.
Buy a REAL Christmas tree Real Christmas trees provide you with a wonderfully traditional Christmas experience unlike anything else. Nothing makes Christmas like putting presents underneath a real fir tree and decorating its branches with your favourite ornaments. The best part about buying an authentic Christmas pine tree is the wonderful fragrance it brings into your home. It’s a delightful Christmas aroma that will last for weeks! Find out where to get one here: www.familiesmagazine.com.au/ real-christmas-trees-brisbane
Sing “Let It Snow” and Let it Go! There’s a lot of pressure to make Christmas perfect, and that can be a total joy-suck. We LOVE imperfect Christmas trees with a mismatch of decorations all at toddler height, and who says you can’t have beans on toast for Christmas dinner if that’s what suits your family. Kids will forget what was under the tree, but they will remember time spent as a family baking, playing games, walking the neighbourhood to look at lights, and singing and dancing to Christmas music. Finding joy in simple things is where you will find the magic this season.
