MY STORY

HI, I’M MEGAN! I was 12 when I found my dad’s beat up 1970s Canon camera. I remember him giving me a photography book that was just as old, and teaching me how to use it. I was immediately hooked! As I made my way through high school I photographed family and friends and fell in love with capturing a moment in time and slowly bringing that memory back to life in the dark room. After high school, the West Coast was calling, so I went to college for Motion Picture Production in North Vancouver, which ultimately led me to my career as a wedding cinematographer and photographer. At 23 I started my business Family Creative Imagery with my best photographer friend, Jamie. From 2010 to 2017 we were privileged to be part of 85 weddings together, along with numerous family photography sessions and events. After 11 years in Vancouver, 7 years of marriage, and 2 furbabies (dog + cat), my husband, Jon, and I decided to move to Thunder Bay to be closer to family. (It’s a long story. Ask me about it later.) We arrived in October 2017 and have quickly fallen in love with the city. Jan 2018, I set up shop as Cascades Photo + Video. I am so excited to go on awesome adventures and witness lots of love and happiness here! When I’m not behind a camera, I spend my time snowboarding, going to concerts, traveling, getting involved in my church community, sweating my butt off in hot yoga, and exploring local trails, eateries, community events, and festivals. I’m latte obsessed, and a bit of a wino. I love my family, movies, books, and art. I hate ‘shopping’, so I buy pretty much everything online; except books! (I could waste hours in bookstores.) I wear black, grey and purple clothing 90% of the time, and change up my hair a lot! I watch far too much Netflix, and binge watch almost every Sci-fi show I can sink my teeth into. I love cacti, succulents and air plants, but have a propensity to kill them off accidentally. I can’t wait to see where life in Thunder Bay takes me, and I’m excited that you’re going to be part of that journey! Cheers, Megan

CLIENT SPOLIGHT

AMIE + DALLAS We had the privilege of photographing and filming Amie + Dallas’ gorgeous Swaneset Country Club wedding in Pitt Meadows, BC. The skies were clear and the hot August weather matched the racing pulses of friends and family alike as the two said “I do.” Weddings are a flurry of excitement. While it’s important to catch special moments between family and friends (those smiles, demure glances and beautiful flowers), stunning photography also captures the wishes of our clients. How can you be prepared for the biggest day of your life to date? Amie shares her thoughts in Cascades’s Q+A. The best advice you have for a bride “Make a conscious effort to soak up as much of the day as you can! Every minute is magical, and the whole day will fly by so quickly. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy yourself. By experiencing our day for each moment as it was, it made the day even more special and memorable than I could have imagined.” The biggest surprise about your wedding day “When our officiant concluded our ceremony with a surprise “speech” from [the perspective of] our two dogs! It was an adorable speech full of metaphors for how to have a wonderful marriage; a list of simple rules to live by so our love would never stop growing. It was such a great surprise, and so very heart-warming!” Yo u r f a v o u r i t e p h o t o + f i l m m o m e n t “Megan and her team did such an incredible job capturing our whole day. Favorite photo has to be either the two of us on the Swaneset entrance road, with my veil flying in the wind. Favorite video moment, by far, is of us reading our cards we wrote to each other for the morning of the wedding. Gets me going every time.” What you loved most about working with Megan “Their incredible personalities and attitude towards their job. The whole Cascades team is dedicated to providing a stellar product, and that includes your experience interacting with them during the planning stages, working with them all day on your big day, and even afterward. Great people who genuinely strive to, and deliver on, doing a great job. And they’re fun!” The one moment that will last forever, for both of you “The way I felt the entire day. There was one particular moment during speeches where it became crystal clear that this was one of the most meaningful days I had ever, and likely will ever, experience. The overwhelming feelings of gratitude, happiness and love were... well, quite inexplicable actually. That feeling is something I will cherish and absolutely remember forever.”

GETTING MARRIED WITHOUT BEING HARRIED 1) Be sure to have a hair and makeup trial at least a month before your wedding. This will give you peace of mind knowing exactly how you will look and give you the opportunity to change things in advance if necessary. Make sure to bring all your jewelry to the trial to see how makeup shades work with the pieces. 2) Have your florist deliver your bouquets and boutonnières to where you are getting ready, not the ceremony venue. Since you never know when the mood will strike for a great photo, you’ll want your flowers on hand and ready to go. 3) Prior to booking your venues, find out what the rules for photos and filming are for the ceremony and reception locations. All locations are different; some restrict the location of photographers and cinematographers, some limit the times in which the team will be permitted to shoot, and some do not permit any photography/videography. If having your ceremony captured on film is one of your top priorities, make sure you discuss this early on. 4) Consider a “First Look”, and if possible, arrange to have your portraits and family formals taken before the ceremony. Getting this step out of the way early in the day frees up the rest of your time to spend with your guests. You will be able to go straight to cocktail hour and catch up with loved ones without stress. It’s a new age, so it’s no longer considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. 5) Have food delivered to your getting ready location. It may be hectic, but take the time to have a bite before the wedding since it could be a while before you have the opportunity to nourish yourself during the reception. 6) Prepare an emergency bridal kit with clear nail polish, mints, a sewing kit, stain treater, eye drops, safety pins, bobby pins, pain reliever, minideodorant, moleskin (for blisters) and band-aids. 7) The number one reason that wedding schedules fall behind is due to hair and make-up taking longer than anticipated. When creating your wedding day timeline, double your getting ready times to alleviate this problem. It may even have you running early! 8) Make sure you discuss a “rain plan” with your venue, just in case Mother Nature doesn’t see sunshine in the cards.

THE PROCESS

FROM SHOOT TO ALBUM The weeks prior to, and directly following your wedding will be surprisingly busy. At Cascades we understand and have created a special timeline to help you see that we are working our hardest to avoid any unnecessary surprises. Six weeks before your wedding - You will receive a “Wedding 411” Questionnaire. We ask that you fill out all the nitty-gritty details, and share the things that are most important to you. Four weeks before your wedding - Your final payment is due for your wedding day photo and/or video services and products. Seven to ten days before your wedding - We will do a quick check-in with you to confirm all the details from your schedule and “Wedding 411” Questionnaire. The day of your wedding - We arrive at the scheduled time and have your timeline on hand. Throughout the course of the day, we will be coordinating with your planner, or your family and friends regarding scheduled start and end times and what to expect. Immediately after your wedding - We import and back up all of your wedding photographs and video footage, We also share some sneak peak photos with you a couple days later. Four to six weeks after your wedding - We send your online photo gallery. You pick your favourite images, and we begin the album design process. Your wedding films are being worked on by our editor. Six to eight weeks after your wedding - We arrange to meet up for an album design consultation. We get to catch up after the wedding, have a tea or coffee and go through the album design together, confirm the layout, look at album samples and cover swatches before we send off the design to our album company. Final touches are being put on your wedding films and delivered to you online. Twelve to fourteen weeks after your wedding - Your album and artwork are ready for delivery! If you’re nearby, we deliver in person, otherwise, we will mail out the albums and send you the shipping confirmation and tracking number. For more info on albums, be sure to check out “All About Albums” on page 29.

YOUR WEDDING

A W E D D I N G D AY P H O T O T I M E L I N E A wedding is a whirlwind of events, gone in the blink of an eye. There’s little more important to a perfectly executed event than an organized timeline. If you are looking to effectively plan out your wedding day with your wedding coordinator or fiancé, here’s a look at a typical wedding photo timeline from a photographer’s point of view.

GETTING READY Duration: 1-2 hrs Cascades arrives at the getting ready site(s). We capture the groom and his guys getting dressed and finishing their preparations. The bride’s hair and makeup should be well underway, and we will capture the finishing touches as they happen. Lay out all the details that you wish to have photographed ahead of time. Bridesmaids should be dressed before we document the bride getting into her wedding dress. If there’s time remaining, we can get some portaits done. FIRST LOOK Duration: 30 mins We arrange for a “First Look” for the bride and groom, where you see each other before the ceremony. This is a super magical and intimate moment just for the two of you. We give you some basic instructions, and then step back to capture the moment as it happens. PORTRAIT SESSION Duration: 1-1.5 hrs Immediately after the “First Look”, we go into the bride and groom’s portraits, followed by wedding party portraits. We move around at the photo session location to get different backdrops, and capture a wide range of natural poses that we guide everyone through. We then head to the ceremony location for family photos. Note: We love First Looks, but know it’s not for everyone. So if you’re going the ‘traditional’ route and not seeing each other until the ceremony, we will do all the portraits after the ceremony. FAMILY PHOTOS Duration: 30 mins We arrive at the ceremony location 60 minutes before the guests arrive, and we meet up with the bride and groom’s families to begin our family formals. We always ask for a list of family groupings beforehand, so we can call out the names for each photo. If you have a large family, and more than 10-15 groupings, we’ll need more time for family photos. See more on Family Formals on page 28. PRE-CEREMONY Duration: 30 mins At this point, Cascades regroups and begins to set up the equipment we need for the ceremony. This prep time is essential for us to confirm we have our ducks in a row and don’t miss any ceremony magic. At this time we also take some ceremony decor shots, while you and your wedding party can take a few minutes to freshen up and grab food.

18

CEREMONY Duration: 30 mins During the ceremony, we document all the moments as they happen: the processional, the exchanging of the vows, the kiss and the recessional. It’s always best to have your officiant or minister request that your guests remain in their seats so they do not block a photo. POST-CEREMONY Duration: 1-2 hrs Once the ceremony is done, we immediately begin photographing candid shots of the bride and groom enjoying time with their guests, and continue through cocktail hour. If there are any additional family photographs desired, we will take this time to finish them before the reception begins. Then, we transition to the reception location, where the Cascades team will enter the dining room before the guests arrive to photograph the cake, florals and decor. We also take this time to set up lights, audio, and anything else needed. Right before the guests arrive, we touch base with the coordinator to see if there were any last minute changes to the reception schedule. RECEPTION

Duration 3-5 hrs During the reception, we’re a fly on the wall. We work behind the scenes to capture moments as they unfold, like first dances, toasts, dancing and cake cutting. But, don’t worry, we take photo requests throughout the evening. Just ask! We may even go outside for a couple sunset portraits. Once, we’ve reached the end of your coverage time, we will check with you to make sure there aren’t any further photos you would like or any overtime requests. Finally we pack up our equipment and say goodbye.

AVERAGE WEDDING Duration 8-10 hrs Our best advice is to create a timeline with enough transition and travel time to minimize the stress of the day. Allow lots of breathing room for the inevitable moment that puts the day behind schedule. If the timeline is crammed full, just ask us to add an extra hour of coverage before the wedding. There’s no need to be crunched for time! Six weeks before your wedding, we email you a questionnaire. Fill in all your wedding details including locations, vendors, timeline, and more. if you don’t have a wedding planner, we’re happy to help with the timeline to ensure we are all on the same page for an unforgettable and stress-free event!

CINEMATOGRAPHY

TO P R E AS O N S W H Y YO U S H O U L D H I R E A C I N E M AT O G R A P H E R 1. IT’S AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE You’ve already found your perfect dress, the perfect location, and most importantly the perfect person. Now, we urge you to invest in finding the perfect team to be your fly on the wall. We’ll capture gorgeous video of your day, so you can crack open a bottle of wine on your 5th, 10th and 50th wedding anniversaries and rewatch one of the best days of your life. Besides, a successful marriage means falling in love with the same person over and over; so, what better way to help future-you than giving yourself the chance to revisit the exact moment your marriage began.

2. IT’S NOT JUST FOR YOU Maybe you’ll have kids one day, maybe you already do, or maybe you just plan to be the best Aunt or Uncle out there. Either way, there are tiny humans in your future that are going to ask about your wedding day. Even if you’re still around to retell the story, isn’t it nice to imagine your grandchildren playing clips of your wedding at their reception?

3. THERE ARE MOMENTS YOU DIDN’T SEE THE FIRST TIME AROUND Take it from someone who already got married, your wedding day from start to finish is going to be a whirlwind. It doesn’t matter if you plan a lowkey ceremony in the forest with 20 of your closest friends, or a 300-guest gala, you will be so wrapped up in your experience that you might miss the moment where your vows bring even your most cynical buddy to tears. A good cinematographer knows what moments to look out for on your big day. They also know how to piece those moments into a beautiful tapestry that will give you insight and a deeper love for everyone who stood with you as you said “I do”.

4. THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY OUTWEIGHS THE EXPENSE We know one of the biggest reasons people hesitate to hire a cinematographer is their concern for the cost. Here’s the truth: Sometimes a photo just can’t capture all the magic of a moment. You don’t get the sound of laughter or sniffles, and you can’t experience the love in the voices of your friends and family during their speech. We know it can be hard to squeeze everything into your budget, but sometimes it may be worth sacrificing in one area to be able to afford the memories.

5. THE QUALITY IS FAR BETTER THAN A FEW MOMENTS CAPTURED ON UNCLE BOB’S IPHONE Uncle Bob might be able to grab some cute footage here and there, but unless he’s a professional wedding cinematographer, you’re not going to get the best quality available. Besides, when a loved one or friend who couldn’t make it asks to see the footage, which would you rather share, a shaky, smart phone video that you can’t hear or a professional montage of your entire day?

ENGAGEMENT

LOVE + ADVENT U R E Romance is in the air and the anticipation of a lifetime together comes to a crescendo in the fleeting months leading up to your wedding. What better way to capture these emotions than in your Love + Adventure Session. A Love + Adventure Session is an extended engagement photo session that allows us to spend time together. You will be doing the activities that you love to do and going to places that you like to go. You’ll do you, and the camera will follow. We capture genuine moments and emotions, and create beautiful portraits along the way. At Cascades, we believe that having an engagement session is super important for several reasons. First, this time allows you, as a couple, to get comfortable in front of the camera and your photographer, and we can figure out how you work best together before the main event. Next, you can showcase your personalities in a more casual setting, while creating some fun, memorable images for your wall, your wedding signing album, guest signature board, Save the Date cards, invitations, your wedding website, and more. Best of all, you can remember this special time forever with personal memories of just the two of you, away from the throngs of loved ones and friends. Here are some tips to get the most out of your L+A session: • If you have a make up trial, you can schedule it for the same day as your L+A session. • Pick a location that either has meaning to you as a couple, or pick somewhere you both would like to explore together. • “Magic hour” is just after sunrise, or just before sunset, so plan to have your photos closer to this time. • Eating and drinking are totally encouraged on your outing. • Ask your photographer for advice on what to wear. There are loads of Pinterest boards full of ideas.

STRIKE A POSE There are two photos from your wedding day that will stand the test of time: the bride and groom portrait, and the family photos. Even though we pride ourselves in capturing gorgeous organic photojournalism that showcases your day as it was, it’s also very important for us at Cascades to capture traditional formal portraits of your family. Family formal portraits are typically taken immediately after the ceremony, however, our favourite time to take these group shots is when everyone is ready and fresh right before the ceremony! This gives everyone the freedom to mingle and just enjoy the hugs and congratulations immediately after the ceremony without the stress of rounding everyone up.

28

Here are some tips for getting great Family Formals

• • • • • •

Allow 3 minutes for each family grouping. Try to keep the total number of groupings to around 1015 to minimize stress. (snag photos with more distant relatives at the reception) Make sure all flowers and boutonnieres are delivered on time and affixed to family members. Start with the largest group and break it down after that to allow for mingling. Make sure to give us a list of any ‘can’t-miss’ portrait groupings you would like to see photographed. Most importantly, don’t get f rustrated with your family, even if they’re stressing you out. Frustration shows in photos, and we want these images to be just as beautiful as your couple portraits.

AL L A B O U T A L B U M S Just a few years before the digital photo revolution, every single couple got a wedding album or prints. It was the culmination of the day’s wonderful memories, presented in a beautiful book that tells a love story for a lifetime. At Cascades, we include an album in every photography package because we believe everyone should have a beautiful high quality heirloom to hand down for generations to come. Because the wedding album process can be a little challenging for busy couples like yourselves, Cascades provides full album services from image selection to design to cover selection, and more. Choosing from our line of gorgeous Heirloom Albums, we are able to provide you with some of the most luxurious photo books on the market. The end result is a stunning work of art that will be a step above anything you could order for yourself online. Your professionally designed keepsake comes complete with a protective box for decades of enjoyment.

Parent Albums Albums aren’t just for couples. Our Parent Albums are a perfect gift to present to your parents after the wedding. Each parent album is a smaller clone of the bride and groom’s book and comes at a discount! All cover and design options we offer for bride and groom albums are available for Parent Albums. Parents can customize the photo design of their own albums as well for a small fee.

Album Options Our albums come with 10 to 30 spreads, and are available in a range of sizes. A spread is 2 pages in an seamless open layout (1 spread = 2 pages. shoe in the bottom right photo).

LIGHTING

considering the

Naturally, as a bride or groom, this is the last thing on your mind as you’re planning your wedding day. Weddings are about love, family, and your commitment to one another, forever.

Since lighting is too often overlooked on the wedding day, we wanted to share a few tips and tricks for getting great light on your wedding day, leading to more flattering photos!

However, at Cascades, light is one of the most important things to us. We live for beautiful natural light, and only get out the flashes and spot lights at the reception after dark. Our aim is to capture your wedding day’s natural look and feel.

Please note, this is in no way a rulebook for lighting. With over eight years of experience and over 85 weddings of every kind under our belt, we have no problem taking on tricky lighting situations with ease. However, any consideration for lighting will usually be more beneficial than not.

Great photojournalism is about capturing authentic moments and encapsulating the mood of the day.

32

CA S CA D E S PH OTO + VI D EO

Tips for Better Light Getting Ready So many beautiful moments can happen during the getting ready time: the excitement, the nerves, the joy and love shared with your closest friends and family, and good lighting can help capture them in a more elegant and flattering way. The best conditions for getting ready light would be a room with large windows and enough light coming through to light the entire room evenly while the lights are off. An ideal getting ready area would be an interestingly decorated space with light-coloured walls to help bounce the light around the room softly. One way to achieve interesting decor and big windows is to stay away from small stuffy hotel rooms that get messy really fast. Instead we recommend looking at renting out a house from AirBNB, or getting ready in a cozy bed and breakfast. Not only will you have much more space for you and your wedding party to get ready, but it will add much more character to your getting ready photos. It’s best to avoid mixed lighting, for example, a mix of bluish and orange light bulbs, a mix of fluorescent and tungsten bulbs or daylight with fluorescent bulbs.

Sometimes your church or venue provides a room for you to get ready in, but it’s best to check it out before you decide. Ceremony Outdoor ceremonies are our absolute favourite, however if you’re planning a summer ceremony in direct sunlight, try to avoid the hours between 11am and 2pm. Not only can this time of day be very hot, but the sun can leave harsh shadows under your eyes and nose. In the hot summer months, the best time of day is two to three hours before sunset. Portraits Try to schedule your portrait session as late in the day as possible. The best portraits are taken when the sun is lower in the sky, so avoid early afternoon when the sun is directly overhead and harsh. You may also consider taking 10-15 minutes out of the reception to sneak away and grab some romantic photos during “Magic Hour” (the hour before sunset). Reception There are so many variables with reception lighting that depend on personal style and the venue itself, but we always love as much natural light as possible.

W W W.CA S CA D E S PH OTOVI D EO.CO M

String lights and chinese lanterns make for beautiful bokeh (the glowy orbs of light in the background). They’re perfect for outdoor and tent receptions, and they help light the perimeter of the reception area in a beautiful way. If you’re having a ballroom wedding, it’s best to avoid overly warm (oranges, reds) uplighting for your reception space, and DJ lighting can sometimes lead to colour splotches on faces. Final Thoughts If you’re worried about your wedding day being overcast, don’t be! A grey sky makes everyone look great, and timing portraits a breeze. When we see overcast skies forecasted for your wedding day, we jump for joy. We’re photographers and cinematographers because we love light, and we photograph weddings because we love love. We want to capture beautiful images of your wedding, and sometimes considering something as small as light makes a massive difference in how your photos turn out. If you have questions about light and your timeline, just let us know. We’d be more than happy to help!
