OUR STORY

Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, there was always someone around snapping a photo of me (usually my dad!). Family vacations were definitely well documented! In high school, I was that person who always had a camera at hand, getting candid moments of friends in the hallways or capturing school events. Yearbook club? Yup. Media club? Yup! My passion truly sparked when I attended the Digital Film & Video program at the Art Institute of Vancouver and purchased my first DSLR. I fell in love with telling stories and bringing them to life. My photography journey eventually led me to a career shooting weddings and it makes me so happy to be able to use my talents to capture & preserve such a wonderful milestone for two peoples. While I am not shooting, you can find me hiking the trails, soaking up rays at the beach and enjoying all that there is to enjoy in Vancouver in the Summer. In the Winter, I become a hermit and channel my inner “grandma” and spend my days knitting and sewing. My nights are spent watching Netflix in my micro apartment with my guy, our furry companion “Buhda” and with a nice fluffy blanket cuddled up on the couch. - Jamie I was 12 when I found my dad’s beat up 1970s Canon camera. Even at such a young age I knew I found something incredibly special. As I grew up and through high school I continued to photograph family and friends. I loved capturing a moment in time, bringing it back to life as it slowly developed in the dark room, and being able to share that work with the world. I went to college for Motion Picture Production at Capilano University, which ultimately led me to my career as a wedding cinematographer and photographer. There is nothing better in this world then being able to witness two people commit their lives to each other. Being part of a family’s happiest days, and being able to help them relive those moments is why I do what I do! When I’m not behind a camera, I spend my time snowboaring, going to concerts, and exploring Vancouver’s mountains, beaches, eateries, and festivals. I live an incredibly blessed life in North Vancouver with the love of my life, Jonathan, and my two fur-babies. I would not be where I am and doing what I love without the support and encouragement of my man! Cheers,

Megan

Q: My fiancé and I really want to have a nighttime wedding, but I’ve heard that will spell disaster for our pictures. What do you think we should do? A: Go for it! While photographers generally prefer natural light to artificial light for the photographs, you should always do what makes you happy. At Family Creative Imagery we come equipped to handle any lighting situation and have years of experience with many different venues and circumstances. Because you never have to worry about your images not coming out nicely, go ahead and have your dream wedding and leave the details to us! Q: I’ve heard a lot about First Looks lately, and having portraits done before the wedding, but I guess you could say we are old-fashioned. Why do you think taking the formals beforehand is so important? A: Here at Family Creative Imagery, we definitely pride ourselves in catering to the needs and desires of our clients. That said, we are believers in taking the formal photographs before the wedding, ensuring not only more time to get the best photographs but also getting the family formals out of the way by the time you are ready to party. We find that stress levels with brides, grooms, family members and wedding parties is greatly reduced when the formals are taken care of and they can focus on just having fun and being with their guests. Also, depending on the time of day, we may have better light and access to better portrait locations before the ceremony. Q: We’d love to set aside some time for some sunset photos. Is this something you do? A: We sure do! In fact we absolutely love sunset images! “Magic hour” is the first hour of light after sunrise and the last hour of light before sunset; when this happens depends on the time of the year. What makes Magic hour so magically? Well, during this time the sun is low in the sky, and gives off a soft and beautiful golden colour. We work with your wedding schedule, and can usually sneak out during dinner time to grab some gorgeous romantic portraits. Be sure to check out page 19 of this issue for more information about how to plan for the best light on your wedding day! Have a question? We’d love to hear from you! Please send your question to getshot@fcimagery.ca.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

AMIE & DALLAS We recently had the privilege of photographing and filming Amie & Dallas’ gorgeous Swaneset wedding. The skies were clear and the hot August weather matched the racing pulse of friends and family alike as the two said “I do.” Because weddings are a flurry of excitement and special moments between loved ones, it is important to not only capture those smiles, demure glances and beautiful flowers, but stunning photography also captures the wishes of the client. How can you be prepared for the biggest day of your life so far? Here, Amie shares her thoughts: The Best Advice for a Bride: “Make a conscious effort to soak up as much of the day as you can - every minute is magical, and the whole day w ill fly by so quickly. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy yourself. By experiencing our day for each moment as it was, it made the day even more special and memorable than I could have imagined.” T h e B i g g e s t S u r p r i s e a b o u t T h e i r We d d i n g D a y : “When our officiant concluded our ceremony with a surprise speech from two family members who couldn’t be with us that day... our two dogs! It was an adorable speech full of metaphors for how to have a wonderful marriage; a list of simple rules to live by so our love would never stop growing. It was such a great surprise, and so very heart-warming!” Their Favorite Photo & Film Moment: “Megan and her team at FCI did such an incredible job capturing our whole day. Favorite photo has to be either the two of us on the Swan-e-set entrance road, with my veil flying in the wind. Favorite video moment, by far, is of us reading our cards we wrote to each other for the morning of the wedding. Gets me going every time.” What they loved most about working with Family Creative Imagery: “Their incredible personalities and attitude towards their job. The whole FCI team is dedicated to providing a stellar product, and that includes your experience interacting with them during the planning stages, working with them all day on your big day, and even afterward. Great people who genuinely strive to, and deliver on, doing a great job. And they’re fun!” W h i c h o n e m o m e n t w i l l l a s t f o r t h e m f o r e v e r. “The way I felt the entire day. There was one particular moment during speeches where it became crystal clear that this was the most meaningful days I had ever, and likely will ever, experience. The overwhelming feelings of gratitude, happiness and love were... well, quite inexplicable actually. That feeling is something I will cherish and absolutely remember forever.”

LOVE ISN’T SOMETHING YOU FIND LOVE IS SOMETHING THAT FINDS YOU. Loretta Young

GETTING MARRIED WITHOUT BEING HARRIED 1) Be sure to have a hair and makeup trial at least a month before your wedding. This will give you peace of mind to know exactly how you will look and give you the opportunity to change things in advance if necessary. Make sure to bring all jewelry to the trial to see how makeup shades work with the pieces. 2) Have your florist deliver your flowers to where you are getting ready, not the ceremony venue. Since you never know when the mood will strike for a great photo, you’ll want your flowers there and ready to go. 3) Find out what the rules for photos and filming are at the ceremony location. All venues are different, some restrict the location of photographers and cinematographers and some even the times in which they are permitted to shoot. 4) If possible, arrange to have your portraits and family formals taken before the ceremony. Getting this step out of the way early in the day frees up the rest of your time to spend with your guests. You will be able to go straight to cocktail hour and catch up with loved ones without stress. It’s a new age, so it’s no longer considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. 5) Have food delivered to your getting ready location. It may be hectic, but take the time to have a bite before the wedding since it will be a while before you have the opportunity to nourish yourself during the reception. 6) Prepare an emergency bridal kit with clear nail polish, mints, a sewing kit, stain treater, Visine, safety pins, bobby pins, pain reliever and mini deodorant, moleskins/band-aids for blisters, etc. 7) Allowing 50% more time for hair and makeup than you originally anticipated alleviates the number one reason wedding schedules end up running late. This will assure you have plenty of time for all the portraits you want to take before the wedding. 8) Make sure you discuss a “rain plan” with your venue just in case Mother Nature doesn’t see sunshine in the cards.

THE PROCESS

FROM SHOOT TO ALBUM The weeks prior to and directly following your wedding are super busy times. Here at Family Creative Imagery we honour your harried moments with a special timeline which will help you to understand how we are working our hardest to avoid any unnecessary surprises: Six weeks before your wedding: You will recieve a “Wedding 411 form to fill out all the nitty gritty details, and the things that are most important to you so we can capture the best images possible. Four weeks before your wedding: Your final payment is due. Ten to seven days before your wedding: We give you a quick check-in call to confirm all the details from the schedule and your Wedding 411 form. The day of your wedding: We arrive at the scheduled time and quickly run through the course of the day. Then we coordinate with your family and friends regarding scheduled start times for formal portraits and what to expect. The day after your wedding: We go through all of your wedding photographs and videos which will then be edited, retouched, and archived. Two or three weeks after your wedding: We prepare for your online photo gallery, and begin your album design, and share some sneak peaks with you. Six to eight weeks after your wedding: We deliver your online wedding gallery proofs, your online album design proof, and information about album revisions, album cover selections, and ordering portrait prints and canvases, wedding party member gifts, and parent albums. Ten weeks after your wedding: Your album design revisions should be well under way, and print and canvas orders have been made. At this time we also deliver your Wedding Films, which will hopefully make you cry (in the good way!) Twelve weeks after your wedding: Your album and artwork are ready for delivery! At this time we deliver by mail or by hand if possible, but our favourite is helping you hang your wedding canvases, and sharing your albums with you in person!

YOUR WEDDING

A W E D D I N G D AY P H OTO T I M E L I N E A wedding is a whirlwind of events, gone in the blink of an eye. There’s little more important to a perfectly executed event than an organized timeline. If you are looking to effectively plan out your wedding day with your wedding coordinator or fiancé, here’s a look at a typical wedding photo timeline from our point of view. We are here to help assist you in planning out your day so that you don’t miss a beat.

6 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY

30 MINUTES AFTER THE CEREMONY

We’ve just finished packing our bags and we’re now going over your Wedding 411 form and talking with your wedding day crew about the details of the day.

We arrive at the reception site and immediately begin photographing candid shots of arriving guests and continue into cocktail hour. If there are any additional formal photographs desired we will take this time to finish them in plenty of time for the reception.

4 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY 45 MINUTES AFTER THE CEREMONY We leave for the wedding site. The bride’s hair and makeup should be well underway to leave plenty of time for family and couple photos. 3.5 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY We arrive at the preparation site to capture the finishing touches of hair and makeup and to document the bride getting into her wedding dress and the groomsmen making their final preparations. 2.5 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY We arrange for a “First Look” for the bride and groom; where they see each other before the ceremony. Immediately after this we begin formal photographs with the bride and groom’s immediate and extended families, followed by the entire wedding party. 2 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY The bride and groom’s portraits begin. We work in a variety of locations and capture a wide range of poses. About an hour before the ceremony we stop to allow you to freshen up, collect your things, and make it to the ceremony site on time and get tucked away before guests arrive.

We enter the dining room before the guests arrive to photograph the cake and floral and decor. We also take this time to set up room lights and spotlights if we find they are needed. Right before the guests arrive we touch base with the catering manager or wedding coordinator to see if there were any last minute changes to the reception schedule. 1 HOUR AFTER THE CEREMONY At this time we strictly document the reception candidly as it unfolds, including the first dances, toasts, dancing, and cake cutting. But don’t worry; we are always available for any photo request you may have throughout the evening. Just ask! 4 HOURS AFTER THE CEREMONY We pack up our equipment and prepare for our departure. But first, we will check with you to make sure there aren’t any further photos you would like or an overtime request. We may go outside for a ‘magic hour’ photograph or night “time exposure” photograph of the both of you to showcase the beauty of your location at night.

30 MINUTES BEFORE THE CEREMONY We arrive at your ceremony site. Here we regroup and coordinate with your wedding day creative team and set up any equipment we need during the ceremony. At this time we take some ceremony decor photographs, and we take a last look around to find where the light is coming from to best document the ceremony. At this time you should have a quick refreshment and take 15 minutes of quiet time with just the two of you; you’ll want to relax before all the excitement begins!

Six weeks before your wedding we will touch base via phone or e-mail to discuss your wedding day photo timeline. At this time we will also provide you with our Wedding 411 form to fill out with all your wedding details including locations, family members, special wedding day events, vendors and much more. This information will ensure we are all on the same page for an unforgettable and stress-free event!

So many things are special about your wedding day. While they may seem like small details, the unassuming pillow your ring bearer carried might have been made from your Christening gown. These are the smaller, sometimes unnoticed details that tell the story of your special day that we document for you at Family Creative Imagery. A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE REQUIRES FALLING IN LOVE MANY TIMES, ALWAYS WITH THE SAME PERSON. Mignon McLaughlin

CINEMATOGRAPHY

TO P 5 R E A S O N S W H Y YO U S H O U L D H I R E A C I N E M ATO G R A P H E R 1. IT’S AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE You’ve already found your perfect dress, the perfect location, and most importantly the perfect person. Invest in finding the perfect team to be your fly on the wall and capture your day, so you can crack open a bottle of wine on your 5th, 10th and 50th wedding anniversary and rewatch one of the best days of your life, retold. Besides, a successful marriage means being able to fall in love with the same person over and over; what better way to help ‘future you’ do that, than by being able to revisit where your marriage started.

2. IT’S NOT JUST FOR YOU Maybe you’ll have kids one day, maybe you already do, or maybe you just plan to be the best Aunt or Uncle out there. Either way, there are future tiny humans in your life that are going to ask about your wedding, and even if you’re still around to retell the story, isn’t it nice to imagine your future grandchildren playing clips of your wedding at their wedding?

3. THERE ARE MOMENTS YOU WEREN’T THERE TO SEE THE FIRST TIME AROUND Take it from someone who recently got married, your wedding day, from start to end is going to be a whirlwind. It doesn’t matter if you plan a low key ceremony in the forest with 20 of your closest friends, or a 300 person gala - you will be so wrapped up in your experience, that you might miss the moment where your vows bring even your most cynical buddy to tears. A good cinematographer knows what moments to look out for on your big day, and they know how to piece those moments into a beautiful tapestry that will give you insight and a deeper love for everyone who was there to stand with you as you said “I do”.

4. THE EXPENSE OUTWEIGHS THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY One of the biggest reasons people hesitate to hire a cinematographer for their wedding is because they are concerned about the cost. Here’s the honest truth, if you know what your budget is for your wedding, and you don’t know how to squeeze a dress, a cake, a venue, a caterer AND a cinematographer into the mix we can help. The earlier your talk to FCI, the more equipped we will be to help you figure out how to balance your budget and end up with everything you want.

5. THE QUALITY WILL BE FAR BETTER THAN THE FEW MOMENTS CAPTURED ON PEOPLE’S IPHONES Uncle Sal might be able to grab some pretty cute footage here and there, but unless he’s a professional wedding cinematographer, you aren’t going to get the best quality out there. Besides, would you rather share some shakey, out-of-focus iPhone video or a professional montage of your entire day to those loved ones and friends that couldn’t make it to your wedding?

STRIKE A POSE Here at Family Creative Imagery we pride ourselves in capturing gorgeous organic photojournalism, and directed portraiture. This style showcases your day as it was, helping to bring your personalities forward and documenting your day for a lifetime of memories. While we shoot the majority of our images this way, it’s also very important to capture traditional formal portraits of family as well. These group shots are best when everyone is ready and fresh right before the ceremony; and since our goal is getting you to your wedding on time, we allow 3-5 minutes for each desired grouping to ensure maximum results with minimal time.

Here are some tips for getting great Family Fomals: • Make sure all flowers and boutonnieres are delivered on time and affixed to family members • Keep the number of groupings to ten or less for more intimate group shots • We always start with the largest group and break it down after that to allow for mingling. • Make sure to give us a list of any ‘can’t-miss’ portrait groupings you would like to see photographed • Don’t get frustrated with your family, even if they’re stressing you out. Frustration shows in photos, and we want these images to be just as beautiful as your couple portraits.

AL L A BO UT A LB UM S Just a decade ago, every couple got a wedding album. It was the culmination of all the wonderful memories of the day presented in a beautiful book that tells a love story for a lifetime. Family Creative Imagery includes an album in every photography package because we believe everyone should have a beautiful high quality heirloom to hand down for generations to come. Because the wedding album process can be a little challenging for busy couples like yourselves, FCI provides full album services from image selection to design to cover selection, and more. Choosing from our line of gorgeous Heirloom Albums, we are able to provide you with some of the most luxurious photo books on the market. The end result is a stunning work of art that will be a step above anything you could order for yourself online. LIGHTING

considering the

Naturally, as a bride or groom, this is the last thing on your mind as you’re planning your wedding day. Weddings are about love, family, and committing your lives to forever. However, at Family Creative Imagery, light is one of the most important things to us, and it’s on our mind constantly! We live for beautiful natural light, and only get out the flashes and spot lights at the reception after dark. Our aim is to capture your wedding day’s natural look and feel.

However, since lighting is too often overlooked on the wedding day, we wanted to share a few tips and tricks for getting great light on your wedding day, and therefore more flattering photos! Sidenote: This is in no-way a rulebook for lighting, and with over six years of experience in weddings of every kind under our belt, we will be able to take on tricky lighting situations with ease, however, any consideration for lighting will usually be more beneficial than not.

Great photojournalism is about capturing the authentic moments and encapsulating the mood of the day.

FA M I LY CR E ATI V E I M AG E R Y / F C I M AG ER Y.C A

Tips for Better Light Getting Ready: Getting ready images are such an amazing way to start the story of your wedding day; the excitement, the nerves, the joy and love shared with your closest friends and family. So many beautiful moments can happen during this time, and good lighting can help capture them in a more elegant and flattering way. The best conditions for getting ready light would be a room with large windows and enough light coming through to light the entire room evenly with the lights off. An ideal getting ready area would be an interestingly decorated space with windows and light walls to help bounce the light around the room in a soft way. One way to achieve interesting decor and big windows is to stay away from stuffy small hotel rooms. Instead we recommend looking at renting out a house from AirBNB, or getting ready in a cozy bed and breakfast. Not only will you have much more space for you and wedding party to get ready, but it will add much more character to your getting ready photos. Lighting to avoid: anything with mixed light (example: a little bit of daylight + mostly orange tungsten bulbs, tungsten + fluorescents lights, daylight + florescent

light, etc). Sometimes your church or venue provide a room for you to get ready in, but it’s best to check it out before you decide. Ceremony: Outdoor ceremonies are our absolute favourite, however if you’re planning a summer ceremony in direct sunlight (little to no shade), try to avoid the hours between 11 am and 1 pm. Not only can this time of day be ridiculously hot, but the sun can leave harsh shadows under your eyes and nose. In the hot summer months, the best time of day is two to three hours before sunset. Portraits: If you’re in love with the soft glowy dusk portraits as much as we are, you’re going to want to make time at sunset to take portraits. Consider taking 15-20 minutes out of the reception to sneak away and grab some romantic photos during “Magic Hour” (the last hour before sunset). Reception: There are so many variables with reception lighting depending on personal style and the venue itself, but we always love as much natural light as possible. String lights and chinese lanterns make for

beautiful bokeh in your photos (the glowy orbs of light in the background). They’re perfect for outdoor and tent receptions, and they help light the perimeter of the reception area in a beautiful way. If you’re having a ballroom wedding, it’s best to avoid overly warm (oranges, reds) uplighting for your reception space, and DJ lighting can sometimes lead to colour splotches on faces. Final Thoughts: If you’re worried about your wedding day being overcast, don’t be! A grey sky makes everyone look great, and timing portraits a breeze! When we see overcast forecasted for your wedding day, we jump for joy inside (sometimes literally!)! We’re photographers and cinematographers because we love light, and we photograph weddings because we love weddings. We want to capture beautiful images of your wedding, and sometimes considering something as small as light makes a huge difference in how your photos turn out. If you have questions about light and your timeline, just let us know! We’d be more than happy to help!
