OUR STORY
Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, there was always someone around snapping a photo of me (usually my dad!). Family vacations were definitely well documented! In high school, I was that person who always had a camera at hand, getting candid moments of friends in the hallways or capturing school events. Yearbook club? Yup. Media club? Yup! My passion truly sparked when I attended the Digital Film & Video program at the Art Institute of Vancouver and purchased my first DSLR. I fell in love with telling stories and bringing them to life. My photography journey eventually led me to a career shooting weddings and it makes me so happy to be able to use my talents to capture & preserve such a wonderful milestone for any couple. While I am not shooting, you can find me hiking the trails, soaking up rays at the beach and enjoying all there is to enjoy in a Vancouver summer. In the winter, I become a hermit and channel my inner “grandma” and spend my days knitting and sewing. My nights are spent watching Netflix, in my micro-apartment with my guy and our furry companion “Buhda”, all cuddled up on the couch with a nice fluffy blanket. - Jamie

I was 12 when I found my dad’s beat up 1970s Canon camera. Even at such a young age, I knew I found something incredibly special. As I grew up and made my way through high school, I continued to photograph family and friends I loved capturing a moment in time, bringing it back to life as it slowly developed in the dark room, and being able to share that work with the world. I went to college for Motion Picture Production at Capilano University, which ultimately led me to my career as a wedding cinematographer and photographer. There is nothing better in this world than being able to witness two people commit their lives to each other. Being part of a family’s happiest days, and being able to help them relive those moments is why I do what I do! When I’m not behind a camera, I spend my time snowboarding, going to concerts, getting involved in my church community, and exploring Vancouver’s mountains, beaches, pubs, and festivals. I live an incredibly blessed life in North Vancouver with the love of my life, Jonathan, and my two fur-babies. I would not be where I am and doing what I love without the support and encouragement of my man! Cheers,
Megan

AMIE & DALLAS We had the privilege of photographing and filming Amie & Dallas’ gorgeous Swaneset wedding. The skies were clear and the hot August weather matched the racing pulses of friends and family alike as the two said “I do.” Weddings are a flurry of excitement. While it’s important to catch special moments between family and friends (those smiles, demure glances and beautiful flowers), stunning photography also captures the wishes of our clients. How can you be prepared for the biggest day of your life so far? Amie shares her thoughts in Family Creative Imagery’s Q&A. The best advice you have for a bride “Make a conscious effort to soak up as much of the day as you can! Every minute is magical, and the whole day will fly by so quickly. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy yourself. By experiencing our day for each moment as it was, it made the day even more special and memorable than I could have imagined.” The biggest surprise about your wedding day “When our officiant concluded our ceremony with a surprise “speech” from [the perspective of] our two dogs! It was an adorable speech full of metaphors for how to have a wonderful marriage; a list of simple rules to live by so our love would never stop growing. It was such a great surprise, and so very heart-warming!” Yo u r f a v o u r i t e p h o t o & f i l m m o m e n t “Megan and her team at FCI did such an incredible job capturing our whole day. Favorite photo has to be either the two of us on the Swaneset entrance road, with my veil flying in the wind. Favorite video moment, by far, is of us reading our cards we wrote to each other for the morning of the wedding. Gets me going every time.” Yo u r m o s t l o v e d e l e m e n t s i n w o r k i n g w i t h F a m i l y C r e a t i v e Imagery “Their incredible personalities and attitude towards their job. The whole FCI team is dedicated to providing a stellar product, and that includes your experience interacting with them during the planning stages, working with them all day on your big day, and even afterward. Great people who genuinely strive to, and deliver on, doing a great job. And they’re fun!” T h e o n e m o m e n t t h a t w i l l l a s t f o r e v e r, f o r b o t h o f y o u “The way I felt the entire day. There was one particular moment during speeches where it became crystal clear that this was one of the most meaningful days I had ever, and likely will ever, experience. The overwhelming feelings of gratitude, happiness and love were... well, quite inexplicable actually. That feeling is something I will cherish and absolutely remember forever.”

GETTING MARRIED WITHOUT BEING HARRIED
1) Be sure to have a hair and makeup trial at least a month before your wedding. This will give you peace of mind to know exactly how you will look and give you the opportunity to change things in advance if necessary. Make sure to bring all jewelry to the trial to see how makeup shades work with the pieces. 2) Have your florist deliver your flowers to where you are getting ready, not the ceremony venue. Since you never know when the mood will strike for a great photo, you’ll want your flowers there and ready to go. 3) Prior to booking your venues, find out what the rules for photos and filming are for the ceremony and reception locations. All locations are different; some restrict the location of photographers and cinematographers, some limit the times in which the team will be permitted to shoot, and some do not permit any photography/videography. If having your ceremony captured on film is one of your top priorities (and it should be), make sure you discuss this early on. 4) Consider a “First Look”, and if possible, arrange to have your portraits and family formals taken before the ceremony. Getting this step out of the way early in the day frees up the rest of your time to spend with your guests. You will be able to go straight to cocktail hour and catch up with loved ones without stress. It’s a new age, so it’s no longer considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. 5) Have food delivered to your getting ready location. It may be hectic, but take the time to have a bite before the wedding since it will be a while before you have the opportunity to nourish yourself during the reception. 6) Prepare an emergency bridal kit with clear nail polish, mints, a sewing kit, stain treater, Visine, safety pins, bobby pins, pain reliever, mini-deodorant, moleskin (for blisters) and band-aids. 7) The number one reason that wedding schedules fall behind is due to hair and make-up taking longer than anticipated. When creating your wedding day timeline, double your getting ready times to alleviate this problem. It may even have you running early! 8) Make sure you discuss a “rain plan” with your venue, just in case Mother Nature doesn’t see sunshine in the cards.
THE PROCESS
FROM SHOOT TO ALBUM The weeks prior to, and directly following, your wedding will be surprisingly busy. Here at Family Creative Imagery, understand and have created a special timeline to help you see that we are working our hardest to avoid any unnecessary surprises. Six weeks before your wedding - You will receive a “Wedding 411” form. So we can capture the best images possible, we ask that you fill out all the nitty-gritty details, and share the things that are most important to you. Four weeks before your wedding - Your final payment is due for your wedding day photo and/or video services and products. Seven to ten days before your wedding - We will do a quick check-in with you to confirm all the details from your schedule and “Wedding 411” form. The day of your wedding - We arrive at the scheduled time and have your timeline on hand. Throughout the course of the day, we will be coordinating with your planner, or your family and friends regarding scheduled start and end times and what to expect. The week after your wedding - We go through all of your wedding photographs and video footage, which will then be edited, retouched, and archived. We also share some sneak peak photos with you. Three to four weeks after your wedding - We send your online photo gallery. You pick your favourite images, and we begin the album design process. Your wedding films are being worked on by our editors. Six to eight weeks after your wedding - We arrange to meet up for an album design consultation. We get to catch up after the wedding, have a tea or coffee and go through the album design together, confirm the layout, look at albums samples and cover swatches. Final touches are put on your wedding films and delivered online. Ten to twelve weeks after your wedding - Your album and artwork are ready for delivery! At this time, we deliver your albums. If you’re nearby, we deliver in person. Otherwise, we will mail out the albums and email a tracking number.

YOUR WEDDING
A W E D D I N G D AY P H OTO T I M E L I N E A wedding is a whirlwind of events, gone in the blink of an eye. There’s little more important to a perfectly executed event than an organized timeline. If you are looking to effectively plan out your wedding day with your wedding coordinator or fiancé, here’s a look at a typical wedding photo timeline from a photographer’s point of view. We are here to help assist you in planning out your day so that you don’t miss a beat.
GETTING READY Duration: 1-2 hrs FCI arrives at the getting ready site(s). We capture the groom and his guys getting dressed and finishing their preparations. The bride’s hair and makeup should be well underway, and we will capture the finishing touches as they happen. Before our arrival, lay out all the details that you wish to have photographed, as it will help expedite the gettingready shoot. Bridesmaids should be dressed before we document the bride getting into her wedding dress. If there’s time remaining, we can get some portaits done. FIRST LOOK
Duration: 30 mins We arrange for a “First Look” for the bride and groom; where they see each other before the ceremony. This is a super magical, and intimate moment for just the couple. We give instructions, and then step back to caputre the moment as it happens candidly.
PORTRAIT SESSION Duration: 1-1.5 hrs Immediately after the “First Look”, the bride and groom’s portraits begin, followed by wedding party portraits. We move around at the photo session location to get different backdrops, and capture a wide range of natural poses that we guide everyone through. We then head to the ceremony location for family photos. Note: We love First Looks, but know it’s not for everyone. So if you’re going the ‘traditional’ route and not seeing each other until the ceremony, we will do all the portraits after the ceremony.
FAMILY PHOTOS Duration: 30 mins We arrive at the ceremony location 60 minutes before the guests arrive, and we meet up with the bride and groom’s immediate and extended families to begin our formal photographs. We always ask for a list of family member groupings before the wedding, so we can call out the names that need to be in each photo. If you have a large family, and more then 10-15 groupings, we’ll need more time for family photos. See more on Family Formals on page 32. PRE-CEREMONY Duration: 30 mins At this point, FCI regroups and begins to set up any equipment we need for the ceremony. At this time we also take some ceremony decor shots, and we take a last look around to find where the light is coming from to best document the ceremony. You and your wedding party should take a few minutes of alone time, that includes a quick refreshment and some relaxation, before the excitement begins!
18
POST-CEREMONY Duration: 1-2 hrs Once the ceremony is done, we immediately begin photographing candid shots of the bride and groom enjoying time with their guests. We continue through cocktail hour. If there are any additional formal photographs desired, we will take this time to finish before the reception begins. We transition to the reception location, where the FCI team will enter the dining room before the guests arrive to photograph the cake, florals and decor. We also take this time to set up lights, audio, and anything else needed. Right before the guests arrive, we touch base with the catering manager or your wedding coordinator to see if there were any last minute changes to the reception schedule. RECEPTION Duration 3-5 hrs During the reception, we strictly document the reception in candid fashion. We work behind the scenes to capture moments as they unfold, like first dances, toasts, dancing and cake cutting. But, don’t worry, we take photo requests throughout the evening. Just ask! We may go outside for magic hour (an hour before sunset), or gather under the night sky for a long-exposure that would feature the bride and groom enjoying the venue. Once, we’ve reached the end of your coverage time, we will check with you to make sure there aren’t any further photos you would like or an overtime request. Finally we pack up our equipment and say goodbye. AVERAGE WEDDING Duration 8-10 hrs Our best advice is to create a timeline with enough transition and travel time to minimize the stress of the day. Allow lots of breathing room for the inevitable moment that puts the day behind schedule. If the timeline is crammed full, just ask us to add an extra hour of coverage. There’s no need to be crunched for time!
Six weeks before your wedding, we will email you a “Wedding 411” questionnaire. Fill in all your wedding details including locations, family members, special wedding day events, vendors and much more. We ask for your timeline at this point too, and if you don’t have a wedding planner, we’re happy to give suggestions that will ensure we are all on the same page for an unforgettable and stress-free event!

CINEMATOGRAPHY
TO P 5 R E A S O N S W H Y YO U S H O U L D H I R E A C I N E M ATO G R A P H E R 1. IT’S AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE You’ve already found your perfect dress, the perfect location, and most importantly the perfect person. Now, we urge you to invest in finding the perfect team to be your fly on the wall. We’ll capture your day, so you can crack open a bottle of wine on your 5th, 10th and 50th wedding anniversaries and rewatch one of the best days of your life. Besides, a successful marriage means falling in love with the same person over and over; what better way to help future-you than giving yourself the chance to revisit the exact moment your marriage began.
2. IT’S NOT JUST FOR YOU Maybe you’ll have kids one day, maybe you already do, or maybe you just plan to be the best Aunt or Uncle out there. Either way, there are tiny humans in your future that are going to ask about your wedding day. Even if you’re still around to retell the story, isn’t it nice to imagine your grandchildren playing clips of your wedding at their reception?
3. THERE ARE MOMENTS YOU DIDN’T SEE THE FIRST TIME AROUND Take it from someone who recently got married, your wedding day from start to finish is going to be a whirlwind. It doesn’t matter if you plan a low-key ceremony in the forest with 20 of your closest friends, or a 300-guest gala — you will be so wrapped up in your experience, that you might miss the moment where your vows bring even your most cynical buddy to tears. A good cinematographer knows what moments to look out for on your big day. And, they know how to piece those moments into a beautiful tapestry that will give you insight and a deeper love for everyone who stood with you as you said “I do”.
4. THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY OUTWEIGHS THE EXPENSE One of the biggest reasons people hesitate to hire a cinematographer is their concern for the cost. Here’s the truth. If you know your wedding budget, but you don’t know how to squeeze a dress, a cake, a venue, a caterer AND a cinematographer into the mix then we can help. The earlier you talk to FCI, the more equipped we will be to help you figure out how to balance your budget and end up with everything you want.
5. THE QUALITY IS FAR BETTER THAN A FEW MOMENTS CAPTURED ON UNCLE BOB’S IPHONE Uncle Bob might be able to grab some cute footage here and there, but unless he’s a professional wedding cinematographer, you’re not going to get the best quality available. Besides, when a loved one or friend who couldn’t make it asks to see the footage, which would you rather share, a shaky, out-of-focus iPhone video or a professional montage of your entire day?

ENGAGEMENT
LOV E & A DV E N T U R E Romance is in the air and the anticipation of a lifetime together comes to a crescendo in the fleeting months leading up to your wedding. What better way to capture these emotions then in your Love & Adventure Session. A Love & Adventure Session is an extended engagement photo session that allows us to spend the day together. You will be doing the activities that you love to do and going to places that you like to go. You’ll do you, and we’ll follow. We’ll capture genuine moments and emotions, and create beautiful portraits along the way. At FCI, we believe that having an engagement session is super important for several reasons. First, this time allows you, as a couple, to get comfortable in front of the camera with your photographer and figure out how you work best together before the main event. Next, you can showcase your personalities in a more casual setting, while creating some fun, memorable images for wall portraits, your wedding signing book, guest signature board, Save the Date cards, invitations, your wedding website, and more. Best of all, you can remember this special time forever with personal memories of just the two of you, away from the throngs of loved ones and friends. Here are some tips to get the most out of your L&A session: • If you have a make up trial, make sure you schedule it for the same day as your L&A session • Pick a location that either has meaning to you as a couple, or pick somewhere you both would like to explore together • “Magic hour” is just after sunrise, or just before sunset, so plan to have your photos taken at this time. • Eating and drinking are totally encouraged on our outing • Ask your photographer for advice on what to wear. We have loads of Pinterest boards full of ideas.

STRIKE A POSE There are two photos from your wedding day that will stand the test of time: the bride and groom portrait, and the family photos. Even though we pride ourselves in capturing gorgeous organic photojournalism that showcases your day as it was, it’s also very important for us at FCI to capture traditional formal portraits of family.
Here are some tips for getting great Family Formals
• • • •
Family formal portraits are typically taken immediately after the ceremony, however, our favourite time to take these group shots is when everyone is ready and fresh right before the ceremony!
• •
This gives everyone the freedom to mingle and just enjoy the hugs and congratulations immediately after the ceremony without the stress of rounding everyone up.
30
Allow for 3 minutes per family grouping. Try to keep the number of groupings around 10-15 for more intimate group shots. Make sure all flowers and boutonnieres are delivered on time and affixed to family members. Start with the largest group and break it down after that to allow for mingling. Make sure to give us a list of any ‘can’t-miss’ portrait groupings you would like to see photographed. Most importantly, don’t get frustrated with your family, even if they’re stressing you out. Frustration shows in photos, and we want these images to be just as beautiful as your couple portraits.

When we did our engagement shoot instantly they made us feel comfortable and was almost like we were hanging out without even having a camera there. LIGHTING
considering the
Naturally, as a bride or groom, this is the last thing on your mind as you’re planning your wedding day. Weddings are about love, family, and your commitment to one another, forever. However, at Family Creative Imagery, light is one of the most important things to us. We live for beautiful natural light, and only get out the flashes and spot lights at the reception after dark. Our aim is to capture your wedding day’s natural look and feel.
moments and encapsulating the mood of the day. However, since lighting is too often overlooked on the wedding day, we wanted to share a few tips and tricks for getting great light on your wedding day, and therefore more flattering photos! Sidenote: This is in no-way a rulebook for lighting, and with over six years of experience at weddings of every kind under our belt, we will be able to take on tricky lighting situations with ease, however, any consideration for lighting will usually be more beneficial than not.

Tips for Better Light Getting Ready Getting ready images are such an amazing way to start the story of your wedding day: the excitement, the nerves, the joy and love shared with your closest friends and family. So many beautiful moments can happen during this time, and good lighting can help capture them in a more elegant and flattering way. The best conditions for getting ready light would be a room with large windows and enough light coming through to light the entire room evenly while the lights are off. An ideal getting ready area would be an interestingly decorated space with windows and light-coloured walls to help bounce the light around the room in a soft way. One way to achieve interesting decor and big windows is to stay away from stuffy small hotel rooms. Instead we recommend looking at renting out a house from AirBNB, or getting ready in a cozy bed and breakfast. Not only will you have much more space for you and your wedding party to get ready, but it will add much more character to your getting ready photos. It’s best to avoid mixed lighting, for example, a mix of daylight and orange
tungsten bulbs, a mix of fluorescent and tungsten bulbs or daylight with fluorescent bulbs. Sometimes your church or venue provides a room for you to get ready in, but it’s best to check it out before you decide. Ceremony Outdoor ceremonies are our absolute favourite, however if you’re planning a summer ceremony in direct sunlight (little to no shade), try to avoid the hours between 11 am and 2 pm. Not only can this time of day be ridiculously hot, but the sun can leave harsh shadows under your eyes and nose. In the hot summer months, the best time of day is two to three hours before sunset. Portraits If you’re in love with the soft glowy dusk portraits as much as we are, you’re going to want to make time at sunset to take portraits. Consider taking 15-20 minutes out of the reception to sneak away and grab some romantic photos during “Magic Hour” (the last hour before sunset). Reception There are so many variables with reception lighting depending on personal style and the venue itself, but we always
F C I M AG ER Y.C A
love as much natural light as possible. String lights and chinese lanterns make for beautiful bokeh (the glowy orbs of light in the background). They’re perfect for outdoor and tent receptions, and they help light the perimeter of the reception area in a beautiful way. If you’re having a ballroom wedding, it’s best to avoid overly warm (oranges, reds) uplighting for your reception space, and DJ lighting can sometimes lead to colour splotches on faces. Final Thoughts If you’re worried about your wedding day being overcast, don’t be! A grey sky makes everyone look great, and timing portraits a breeze. When we see overcast forecasted for your wedding day, we jump for joy. We’re photographers and cinematographers because we love light, and we photograph weddings because we love weddings. We want to capture beautiful images of your wedding, and sometimes considering something as small as light makes a massive difference in how your photos turn out. If you have questions about light and your timeline, just let us know. We’d be more than happy to help!
