How to prepare for your

baby’s first holiday For most parents, travelling with our children – whatever their age - can be a stressful and daunting experience. Whether it’s forgetting their favourite toy, the slight change to their sleep pattern or getting used to a different type of cuisine, holidays can demand plenty of planning in advance and more than one or two suitcases! So what do mums and dads need to think about when they take their baby abroad for the first time? Before you even start planning your holiday, don’t forget to do your homework and always be practical as babies require a lot of time and equipment, which means packs of nappies, several changes of clothes, formula, bottles and things to keep them occupied.

Moving with the times St Hilda’s CE High School makes 2011 year of the revamp A traditional Church of England High School nestled on the edge of picturesque Sefton Park has made 2011 the year to revamp its image. St Hilda’s CE High School, which is known for its high achieving students, has retained its original school ethos, but decided to revamp their old school badge that has served the school for more than 100 years. The school’s Headteacher Mrs Eleanor Benson said: “Our new badge reflects the fact that we want to look to the future without throwing out the best of the past. “The new design is still in keeping with the Christian ethos of the school and adds a more modern feel, which has been well received by the pupils, staff and parents.”

Numerous extra-curricular activities keep the school ‘buzzing’ until late in the evening and pupils participate in a range of clubs and businesses from its soap making company to craft companies, from cheerleading to dance. Mrs Benson added: “2011 promises to be an exciting year for our pupils as we have plenty of events lined up in the calendar. Just a few to mention are visits to Paris and Munich as well as trips to London to see the Houses of Parliament, the theatres and museums. We want to keep pupil learning dynamic and up to date just as we have our badge.”

Teachers and pupils at Alsop High School celebrate school’s major refurbishment A new look Alsop High School has been unveiled after several months of building work, refurbishment and landscaping. To celebrate, both teachers and pupils held an opening ceremony in the new school restaurant, which included speeches from Headteacher Phil Jamieson, executive of the Morgan Sindall building company, Ray Clarke, and the architect of the new building, Martin Shutt of 2020 Liverpool. Mr Shutt said that the school was a ‘vast project’ but everyone should ‘be proud’ of the new facilities. He said: “It was a challenge and at times very difficult, but it was also very rewarding. Introduce a journal - One way to promote writing as a fun activity is to introduce a journal. Encourage your child to write about everything, from their daily activities to their favourite pop star, hobbies or a place they like to visit. Get them reading as much as possible - Encourage your child to fit in as much reading as possible, whether it is a book, magazine or comic. It can also become quite a fun challenge if there is more than one child in the family as you can ask them to note how many pages they have read per day on a calendar.

Schools out for summer - or is it? How to continue your child’s education over the summer break With the summer holidays well under way, it’s important that your child remembers some of the things that they have learned during the last few months at school. Although their main interests will now include socialising in the sunshine, days out with the family or relaxing with friends, teachers from around the city are encouraging parents to continue their child’s education outside of the classroom. Family Go Live spoke to Frances Harrison, Headteacher at Notre Dame Catholic College of the Arts, to find out her top five tips for keeping your children top of the class this summer: Tackle problems areas with games - Maths and English are the two main problem areas for most children but they are also easy subjects to improve with fun games and activities. A games night, featuring word building games such as Scrabble and Boggle or simple maths games like Monopoly, can improve your child’s understanding while creating a fun evening for the whole family.

Make learning a part of everyday life - Whether it’s a day out with the entire family or just a quick trip to the shops, simple learning tasks can be included in almost anything. A family trip to a castle can spark discussion around the historical significance of the site while a trip to the sales can assist mathematical development by solving sale prices with your child. Encourage older children to teach younger siblings Let children play at being teacher to their younger siblings by helping them to understand basic maths problems and the meaning of words. Be sure to utilise the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why) when asking about your child’s plan for the ‘lesson’ to promote further investigation into the topics chosen.

‘Miss’ leads the way with Liverpool Music Support Service Two years ago, teaching assistant Angela Parkinson embarked on a difficult task – helping her entire Year 4 class learning a musical instrument. But with the help and guidance of the Liverpool Music Support Service (LMSS) and their Wider Opportunities service, Angela was even encouraged to take part herself – with fantastic results. The service gives an entire Year 4 class the chance to learn the instrument of their choice for one year with the support of specialist teachers. Operating across 120 primary and secondary schools in Liverpool, LMSS offer schoolchildren integrated music lessons within the curriculum of the participating classes.

Angela Parkinson commented: “We are so thrilled to have achieved such fantastic results - 1 distinction, 5 merits and 7 passes. Throughout the whole process, the children have gained a wealth of skills including improved coordination and confidence in practical lessons, which they always enjoy participating in as a group.” Wider Opportunities also actively engages children’s participation across a range of school subjects and improves their discipline, confidence and even attendance while encouraging a more positive attitude to education as a whole. divorced and I’m worried about losing contact with my grandson who is nine. His dad is thinking of moving away to another city. What are my legal rights?’

As a grandparent there are no automatic legal rights over a grandchild. This will usually require a court order whether that be by way of the Court ruling upon the application and making the order (known as an adjudication) or by way of a consent order which has been agreed by the parties and sealed by the court. Before bringing an application for a contact order before the court, a grandparent would need to obtain the permission of the Court. This is known as an application for leave. Leave will be required unless the child has been living with the Grandparents for a period of 3 years or more or they have the consent of all parties with parental responsibility. Normally grandparents will readily be given leave to bring a contact application provided that they can prove to the court that they have a genuine interest and commitment to the child.

Once leave has been granted by the court the application for contact will be considered. This application must be made in writing and in the prescribed form. Last year, Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, said it was “crazy” that millions of grandparents lost contact after separation and divorce, especially when they play such a vital role when relationships break down. His words came after 113,949 divorces were registered in England and Wales in just 12 months. That meant that one in three couples divorced before their 15th anniversary, compared with one in five a generation ago.

Should grandparents have better rights when a relationship breaks down? In a report released this month, it was revealed that grandparents in the UK provide nearly fifty per cent of the childcare, for parents who have other commitments such as work or college. Half of the UK’s fourteen million grans and granddads choose to look after their grandchildren and almost all of them do it for free. In fact, according to charity Age Concern, it’s been calculated that this saves parents an estimated £4billion a year on childcare. Further research found that sixteen per cent of grandparents in their sixties and one third of grandparents in their seventies also provide financial support to grandchildren.

However, Grandparents’ legal rights may be set to change in 2011, following numerous calls for a new law to be introduced that recognises and protects their rights. But what happens to grandparents when there is a breakdown of a marriage or a long-term relationship within the family? Although they can often be an invaluable source of support, many tend to lose all contact with their grandchildren if a divorce or separation turns sour, or if one side of a partnership decides to move to a new area. This can cause hurt and distress and have a significant impact on the relationship between grandparents and the children concerned. Under current family law, the right of grandparents to keep contact with their grandchildren after a divorce or family breakdown is not actually protected or even acknowledged. The Children Act 1989 grants step-parents who have lived as part of the family for three years or more the right to

What happens at a Jungle Rumble party? Once you have taken that all important step to come book your party with us, you will then embark on a fun filled two hour Jungle experience. Upon arrival, your party will be showed to their designated seating area by a member of our staff. When your entire party has arrived, we will fit you out with golf clubs, golf balls and a score card and you will begin your 18-hole course. You have an hour in which to play and then on the second hour of your party you will sit down to eat. How many children can attend one of your parties? We have a minimum booking number of eight and a maximum of thirty What makes Jungle Rumble parties so special? It is somewhere very different to hold your party which makes it that much more exciting. We believe the thing that makes it that much more special is the care and consideration the staff put into each individual party. We cater to your exact needs and we are dedicated in ensuring your party is one of a kind. How long do your parties last for? We allocate one hour for golf and one hour for guests to eat their food. What sort of food do you offer at your parties? You have a choice from two menus. The first is a cold food buffet where we supply a mixture of sandwiches (made fresh that day), fruit skewers with a homemade chocolate dip, rice crispy cakes made in store and good quality crisps. The other option is hot food where you can pick each child’s meal from a set menu. Best of all, we don’t use microwaves and we serve proper chips! What age groups are your parties suitable for? We host groups from any age and cater to your individual requirements. What is the cost of the parties? Between £9.95 & £12.95 per person, although we can customise a party for you if required.
