How to prepare for your

baby’s first holiday For most parents, travelling with our children – whatever their age - can be a stressful and daunting experience. Whether it’s forgetting their favourite toy, the slight change to their sleep pattern or getting used to a different type of cuisine, holidays can demand plenty of planning in advance and more than one or two suitcases! So what do mums and dads need to think about when they take their baby abroad for the first time? Before you even start planning your holiday, don’t forget to do your homework and always be practical as babies require a lot of time and equipment, which means packs of nappies, several changes of clothes, formula, bottles and things to keep them occupied.

they have never seen before, it will keep them occupied for longer. A favourite with us is a sticker book (due to the minimum mess risk!) Pack lots of snacks - Raisins, fruit bars and yoghurts ensure that you are prepared for any delays Comforter - if your child is using a dummy or muslin, make sure to pack it as it will help them when they are in unfamiliar surroundings

Think about how far you are willing to travel and always consider whether staying a little closer to home is a much better idea. Jetting off to exotic locations abroad may not be a great idea with an infant and in some cases, there may be health concerns to think about due to the location. Babies are more susceptible to illness than adults so never expose them to these risks at a young age. Overall, the key to any holiday is your baby’s happiness and things will get stressful at times. However, your first trip away with them should be enjoyable and also a learning experience at the same time. Top travel essentials when travelling with your baby Nappies and Baby Wipes - Make sure you have enough nappies in your hand luggage and don’t be afraid to over pack! A change of clothes - This is essential. Don’t forget to bring a change of top for you too Introduce something new - By giving them something

Gingerbread Pre-Schools lead the

way with new technology An award winning family owned chain of Merseyside Pre-Schools is harnessing the latest technology to help children prepare for school life. Gingerbread Pre-Schools has invested more than £100,000 in high tech equipment for the benefit of its children and parents – including the latest IT systems, Interactive Whiteboards, Smart Tables and biometric security. The nurseries are also the first in the country to offer all parents a complete electronic portfolio of their child’s work presented on disc when they graduate. Stephen Collins, chief executive of the Gingerbread Group said: “Parents love sticking their children’s pictures on their fridge but with an electronic copy you can keep it forever, print it out and frame it or email it to grandparents so they can see how their grandchildren are developing.”

The Essential Directory for Organised Parents

The nurseries are the first in Merseyside to offer parents a secure online Internet Viewing System, which allows them to access live nursery images to watch their child playing at any time. The innovative service can also be accessed from parents’ Smartphones. The nurseries have also installed high tech biometric fingerprint access technology to their front doors. Gingerbread House was the first Nursery in the area to be accredited with 5 Stars under Sefton Council’s Scores on the Doors and was also amongst the first 6 nurseries in Sefton to be awarded ‘The Appetite 4 Life’, an award which recognises high standards of hygiene and quality nutritious meals. www.gingerbreadpreschools.com

Moving with the times St Hilda’s CE High School makes 2011 year of the revamp A traditional Church of England High School nestled on the edge of picturesque Sefton Park has made 2011 the year to revamp its image. St Hilda’s CE High School, which is known for its high achieving students, has retained its original school ethos, but decided to revamp their old school badge that has served the school for more than 100 years. The school’s Headteacher Mrs Eleanor Benson said: “Our new badge reflects the fact that we want to look to the future without throwing out the best of the past. “The new design is still in keeping with the Christian ethos of the school and adds a more modern feel, which has been well received by the pupils, staff and parents.”

Numerous extra-curricular activities keep the school ‘buzzing’ until late in the evening and pupils participate in a range of clubs and businesses from its soap making company to craft companies, from cheerleading to dance. Mrs Benson added: “2011 promises to be an exciting year for our pupils as we have plenty of events lined up in the calendar. Just a few to mention are visits to Paris and Munich as well as trips to London to see the Houses of Parliament, the theatres and museums. We want to keep pupil learning dynamic and up to date just as we have our badge.”

Teachers and pupils at Alsop High School celebrate school’s major refurbishment A new look Alsop High School has been unveiled after several months of building work, refurbishment and landscaping. To celebrate, both teachers and pupils held an opening ceremony in the new school restaurant, which included speeches from Headteacher Phil Jamieson, executive of the Morgan Sindall building company, Ray Clarke, and the architect of the new building, Martin Shutt of 2020 Liverpool. Mr Shutt said that the school was a ‘vast project’ but everyone should ‘be proud’ of the new facilities. He said: “It was a challenge and at times very difficult, but it was also very rewarding. The design for the new Jamieson

Building is unique and no other school under the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ scheme will have the same look that Alsop has.” Talented Year 10 students, who are studying for a catering GCSE, provided a buffet for the occasion, while there was musical accompaniment, organised by music and keyboard teacher Mr Partington. Many brave students decided to perform solos while others entertained in the form of bands.

EDUCATION

Introduce a journal - One way to promote writing as a fun activity is to introduce a journal. Encourage your child to write about everything, from their daily activities to their favourite pop star, hobbies or a place they like to visit. Get them reading as much as possible - Encourage your child to fit in as much reading as possible, whether it is a book, magazine or comic. It can also become quite a fun challenge if there is more than one child in the family as you can ask them to note how many pages they have read per day on a calendar.

Schools out for summer - or is it? How to continue your child’s education over the summer break With the summer holidays well under way, it’s important that your child remembers some of the things that they have learned during the last few months at school. Although their main interests will now include socialising in the sunshine, days out with the family or relaxing with friends, teachers from around the city are encouraging parents to continue their child’s education outside of the classroom. Family Go Live spoke to Frances Harrison, Headteacher at Notre Dame Catholic College of the Arts, to find out her top five tips for keeping your children top of the class this summer: Tackle problems areas with games - Maths and English are the two main problem areas for most children but they are also easy subjects to improve with fun games and activities. A games night, featuring word building games such as Scrabble and Boggle or simple maths games like Monopoly, can improve your child’s understanding while creating a fun evening for the whole family.

The Essential Directory for Organised Parents

Make learning a part of everyday life - Whether it’s a day out with the entire family or just a quick trip to the shops, simple learning tasks can be included in almost anything. A family trip to a castle can spark discussion around the historical significance of the site while a trip to the sales can assist mathematical development by solving sale prices with your child. For example, how much will the t-shirt be with 25% off the ticket price? Encourage older children to teach younger siblings Let children play at being teacher to their younger siblings by helping them to understand basic maths problems and the meaning of words. Be sure to utilise the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why) when asking about your child’s plan for the ‘lesson’ to promote further investigation into the topics chosen.

‘Miss’ leads the way with Liverpool Music Support Service Two years ago, teaching assistant Angela Parkinson embarked on a difficult task – helping her entire Year 4 class learning a musical instrument. But with the help and guidance of the Liverpool Music Support Service (LMSS) and their Wider Opportunities service, Angela was even encouraged to take part herself – with fantastic results. The service gives an entire Year 4 class the chance to learn the instrument of their choice for one year with the support of specialist teachers. Operating across 120 primary and secondary schools in Liverpool, LMSS offer schoolchildren integrated music lessons within the curriculum of the participating classes.

Angela Parkinson commented: “We are so thrilled to have achieved such fantastic results - 1 distinction, 5 merits and 7 passes. Throughout the whole process, the children have gained a wealth of skills including improved coordination and confidence in practical lessons, which they always enjoy participating in as a group.” Wider Opportunities also actively engages children’s participation across a range of school subjects and improves their discipline, confidence and even attendance while encouraging a more positive attitude to education as a whole. Oh I do love to be beside the seaside! Days at the beach for all the family FUN AND GAMES

There is nothing better than soaking up some rays during a summer’s day at the beach… and you needn’t travel half way across the world to do it. Formby Beach is often tipped as one of the most scenic locations in the North West and could be seen as the equivalent of the Sahara desert in the eyes of a toddler. And if you live on the other side of the River Mersey, West Kirby is also a prime location for days out, with its golden beach and the numerous cafes situated near the prom.

FAMILY FUN IN THE SUN WITH POLAROID SUNGLASSES

A fun idea for children is to introduce them to the Easter Egg Hunts’ sister game: The Pirate Treasure hunt. Chocolate isn’t really suitable for a sweltering day at the beach, but lollipops, maps, eye patches and party medals are. Hide them in shallow sand and get your children to uncover them with buckets and spades. INFANT HEALTH AND SAFETY Infant skin is soft, gentle and undamaged by the sun, so be sure to make sunscreen an essential when you hit the beach with your family. It is vital to take into account the SPF also, which should always be a minimum of 20.

! N I W

Kids love having fun in the sun and we all know about being sun-safe when it comes to skin protection. But kids’ eyes are really vulnerable to sun damage too. It’s vital to make sure their sunglasses (and yours!) give 100% UV protection and are polarized to cut glare. Every single pair of Polaroid sunglasses, fitted with their unique UltraSight lenses does just that – and the Summer 2011 Collection has a great choice of classic and contemporary frames for men and women – and it’s very own Kids Collection. These are robust enough to be kid proof but with bright colours and stylish frames designed to suit all ages from babies to teenages. Prices start from £25 for kids sunglasses and £50 for adults and they can be bought online at www.polaroidsunglasses.co.uk Family Go Live have teamed up with Polaroid to give away a great competition prize of a family set of Polaroid sunglasses. Q: My daughter has just got

divorced and I’m worried about losing contact with my grandson who is nine. His dad is thinking of moving away to another city. What are my legal rights?’

A:

As a grandparent there are no automatic legal rights over a grandchild. This will usually require a court order whether that be by way of the Court ruling upon the application and making the order (known as an adjudication) or by way of a consent order which has been agreed by the parties and sealed by the court. Before bringing an application for a contact order before the court, a grandparent would need to obtain the permission of the Court. This is known as an application for leave. Leave will be required unless the child has been living with the Grandparents for a period of 3 years or more or they have the consent of all parties with parental responsibility. Normally grandparents will readily be given leave to bring a contact application provided that they can prove to the court that they have a genuine interest and commitment to the child.

Once leave has been granted by the court the application for contact will be considered. This application must be made in writing and in the prescribed form. When considering applications for contact the court will consider all issues, however the child’s welfare and safety is always the primary and paramount concern.

Once a contact order is made by the court the terms of that order remain binding upon all parties until the child reaches maturity or until further order of the court. The Essential Directory for Organised Parents

Last year, Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, said it was “crazy” that millions of grandparents lost contact after separation and divorce, especially when they play such a vital role when relationships break down. His words came after 113,949 divorces were registered in England and Wales in just 12 months. That meant that one in three couples divorced before their 15th anniversary, compared with one in five a generation ago.

Should grandparents have better rights when a relationship breaks down? In a report released this month, it was revealed that grandparents in the UK provide nearly fifty per cent of the childcare, for parents who have other commitments such as work or college. Half of the UK’s fourteen million grans and granddads choose to look after their grandchildren and almost all of them do it for free. In fact, according to charity Age Concern, it’s been calculated that this saves parents an estimated £4billion a year on childcare. Further research found that sixteen per cent of grandparents in their sixties and one third of grandparents in their seventies also provide financial support to grandchildren.

apply for contact, but not to blood related grandparents. If grandparents are denied access, they have to go though the costly and time consuming process of applying to court.

However, Grandparents’ legal rights may be set to change in 2011, following numerous calls for a new law to be introduced that recognises and protects their rights. The proposals were originally put together under former civil servant and businessman David Norgrove. A review of the family justice system would mean that grandparents benefit and that couples were further encouraged to use mediation to sort out contact arrangements rather than resorting to the courts. These plans are sure to be welcomed by campaigners for Grandparents’ rights located around the UK, who have been contesting for years that their role in creating stronger families should be better recognised.

But what happens to grandparents when there is a breakdown of a marriage or a long-term relationship within the family? Although they can often be an invaluable source of support, many tend to lose all contact with their grandchildren if a divorce or separation turns sour, or if one side of a partnership decides to move to a new area. This can cause hurt and distress and have a significant impact on the relationship between grandparents and the children concerned. Under current family law, the right of grandparents to keep contact with their grandchildren after a divorce or family breakdown is not actually protected or even acknowledged. The Children Act 1989 grants step-parents who have lived as part of the family for three years or more the right to

Just a cut above the rest… how to find the perfect hairdresser For many of us, hair salons can be daunting places where we often find ourselves seated in an impersonal environment, faced with an intimidating character and a style that just isn’t us. When choosing a hairdresser, be sure to avoid this often inevitable situation by opting for a personal consultation first and don’t forget to bring any magazine clippings or photographs that you like with you. Rob Webb, director of one of city’s longest standing hairdressing brands, Voodou, said: “You should never be forced into trying a new style that you didn’t have in mind when you first walked in. Through personal consultations like the ones we have always offered since we first opened in 1976, you should be left feeling at ease with your style choices, in a comfortable atmosphere, where you can openly discuss your options.”

The upkeep and styling of hair can often be time consuming, so a good quality cut and colour is essential to ensure that your daily routine is easy and carefree. “Hair that has been correctly coloured in a salon will be manageable, whilst a sharp cut that is void of split ends will mean that your hair will keep shape and stay in place for longer”, added Rob, who has enforced an array of incentives for his clients, “We have to look after what we call our ‘disciples’ and that means that loyal friends should be rewarded and nurtured. When you become a lover of Voodou or sign up for our Getting to Know You initiative, you get showered with gifts, discounts and tokens of our affection!” For more information visit www.voodou.co.uk
