... a lot! Here are four quick top tips:
But unfortunately for many mums, babies don’t really have a set pattern, with most little ones enjoying 40 winks little and often and never at the same time twice. The average newborn baby sleeps for around a third of a day, meaning they get approximately 16 hours of shut eye for every 24 hours.

As they continue to grow older, babies require less sleep; in fact, they take the exact amount of sleep that they need, whenever they need it. Did you know that it takes adults one hour 40 minutes to two hours to cycle through each stage of sleep, whereas a newborn baby will go through each stage in just 5060 minutes? That’s why there is always the possibility that your baby could potentially wake up every hour throughout the day (and also the night!). Unfortunately, babies are most likely to wake up in the early hours of the morning and for the parents, this can leave them feeling dazed and confused. Sometimes, it can leave mums and dads so unsettled that it can impact them for a series of days. The only thing you can do to try and avoid these feelings is heading to bed earlier in an attempt to get as much sleep as possible. Also, try sleeping when your baby is sleeping – getting an extra 20 minutes in the middle of the day could have a positive effect.

1. Don’t wait until your little one has completely fallen asleep. Try and put him/her down in their cot while they are still drifting off.
2. Try not to make a connection with feeding and sleeping. If the baby falls asleep on you mid-feed, rouse them a little before you finally put them to bed so there is a sense of separation. 3. During the daytime, don’t attempt to cut out any noises and sounds, for example the television or the washing machine. The worst thing you can do is to be silent around your baby as they will get used to it.
4. Play with them as much as you can in the day… it may help to tire them out!

another baby?
BUMPS & BABIES
BUMPS & BABIES
Should I consider having
The questions every couple should ask themselves when it comes to expanding the family… There are many factors that will need to be thought about, ranging from your job, your finances, your lifestyle and of course, the effect it would have on the current status of your family. In order to make the whole situation easier, we have put together our very own guide to help you decide whether you’re ready to be a parent again.
Your First Child: As you know from having your first child, a newborn baby takes up a lot of time and attention so don’t be afraid to wait just that little bit longer to have your second, until your child can cope without a little less one-to-one time.
Your Relationship: Just because there is a child in the equation when you’re deciding whether to have another baby, don’t forget to consider you and your partner’s feelings. It may be the case that you are ready to be a mother again, but is your other half ready to become a father for the second time?
Can you afford it: It might sound rather strict, but why not sit down with your partner and put together a budget that would cater for you if you had another child? As most of us all know, babies are expensive and have a big impact when it comes to your bank balance.
Childcare: Finding childcare for one child is often achievable, but can the same be said when you have two little ones that need looking after? If you can’t afford to pay for childcare and you need to rely on family members to help you with your children, be realistic. Will they be able to cope and look after more than one?
Your Age:
Probably the most important factor to consider when deciding if it’s the right time for you, is your age. We all know that our age affects our fertility; therefore your age will play a major role in your ability to space out your pregnancies.

baby illnesses
Education Directory
It’s inevitable that your baby is going to pick up common illnesses during the first part of their life and when it does happen, no parent is able to rest easy. During the first year of their life, your little one is very likely to experience constipation, a cough or colds, nappy rash, diarrhoea, an ear infection or vomiting. But there are things you can do to relive your child of discomfort and treat the symptoms quick and effectively. Constipation is extremely common and affects around 30 percent of children at some stage in their early life. Their ‘individual pattern’ will depend on what she eats and drinks, how active they are, and how quickly they digest their food.
After a period of time and with practice, you’ll be able to tune in to your baby’s unique patterns. Colds are also common at this time of year, when babies are spending an increasing number of hours indoors. This means that viruses can spread more easily from person to person, with the average child picking up between six and ten colds per year (the average adults gets two to four)!

Nowadays it seems that an increasing amount of children would prefer to spend an hour in front of their computer screen than take part in some form of regular exercise. Understandably, we live in a country that has a very temperamental climate, so going outside to get fit can often seem very unappealing. However, this lack of exercise could have a detrimental effect on our children’s health and also on their academic performance.
It has also been revealed that physical activity during the school day can dramatically enhance concentration skills and improve classroom behaviour. Children who do not exercise regularly can often feel agitated, lethargic and not sleep well at night.
EDUCATION
How staying active can help your child’s education
For example, participating in a team sport at school can build a child’s ‘team player’ skills, enable them to make new friends and increase their confidence dramatically - all of which lead to a better overall performance in the classroom. Did you know that sixty minutes of aerobic exercise a day is what the government recommends for children aged 5 – 18 years? This should include a mix of moderate exercise (a raised heart-rate and breaking into a sweat) and intense exercise (very increased heart-rate and hard/fast breathing).
Sarah Oakley-Cooke from Active TT said: “Exercise boosts confidence and self esteem, which in short means that pupils are more alert and able to take on information in the classroom. Also, individual sports and team games help practise group work and individual target setting which are key to higher attainment in education”.
Often due to budget cutbacks, children are offered less and less sports programmes at school. What’s more, experts say that compulsory physical education at schools could be taken off the national curriculum completely in the next year or two. Unfortunately, if this goes ahead, children who already do very little exercise will be doing even less. Recent studies over the last decade have proved that children who exercise regularly achieve higher academic results than those who do not exercise; in fact, exercise does not have any direct negative effects on academic performance.

How Technology is a necessity for our children’s development Computers are becoming an everyday necessity for individuals, businesses and now even our children. They are used increasingly more in schools and especially when it comes to homework – meaning it’s not just our sons and daughters that are having to get used to them. In fact, 90 percent of children ages 5 to 17 use computers and 59 percent use the Internet. Back in 2001, over two thirds of Americans were using computers and the trend quickly followed in the UK, where in the past 10 years, computer and Internet use has become more widespread among children and adolescents than within adults.
Last June, there was much controversy in the press when it was announced that nurseries attached to state schools were likely to expose under-fives to modern technology. Many parents feared that it would undermine children’s long-term development.
So how do computers help with our children’s development? Many children learn the basics of how to use a computer while at school, where they use them to look up facts online, put together projects and also make presentations for classroom assignments. As they get older, many start to use email as a form of communication, with The National Centre for Education Statistics finding that email is becoming increasingly popular among 11-17 year olds. However, there is still a love for instant messaging between younger children, who continue to use it to keep in contact with their peers and also with family members.

Subsequently, this means that the local government is no longer in control of the school and that they have much more control and independence over what they teach. Academies often get financial support from sponsors, but they must still meet the requirements of the National Curriculum where core subjects are concerned. Like all other schools, they are still regularly inspected by Ofsted. With some academies, there is often a concern that the school’s interest will be that of the private bodies that sponsor them rather than that of the children. However on the other hand, some feel that high-performing and well equipped schools will attract talented teachers who will use their own teaching methods to get better results from the children. There are 24,000 schools in England and so far about 250 academies with the government aiming for 400. In the last few years, a number of schools in Liverpool have already converted to academies, bringing the total number to five, with a few more currently in the process.

EDUCATION
EDUCATION
Do you know what the difference is and what effect this may possibly have on your children’s education? An academy is a school that has had to apply for ‘academy’ status. Once an academy, the school is no longer funded by the local government but instead by the central government (Department of Education).
Becoming an Academy In recent years, the number of schools in the North West converting to academies has been on the increase, with many parents still unsure why... The De La Salle Academy in Croxteth became an academy in January 2011. Principal Patrick Ferguson said:
“Becoming an academy means we now have greater freedom to focus time, energy and investment into our ambitious programme to develop the potential of every student. The transfer to an academy has been exceptionally smooth and this comes from the harmonious relationships which exist between our students, parents, academy staff and the community.”

IM Ma rsh
– b y Anna Howa rd My two children Louise, 6, and Frank, 8, have been visiting IM Marsh on a regular basis and they even spent the majority of their summer holidays there. Every day they have the opportunity to try a wide variety of sports and have supportive coaches who help them to develop their skills. Their days are full of physical activity and at the end of the day they are always worn out! As a working mother, I need to have somewhere for my children to go where I know they will be looked after by people who I can trust and I found that place at IM Marsh. I would have no hesitation recommending IM Marsh to any prospective parents; the children’s days are fulfilling and fun. Both Louise and Frank have made good friends through attending the camp and have found sports that they really enjoy. During the school term Louise attends dance and Frank enjoys gymnastics,

IM Ma rsh and both of them have really improved. I am thrilled to see how well they are doing. The coaches are enthusiastic and committed and really are there to help the children. There are great facilities at IM Marsh both inside and outside; Frank especially enjoys playing lacrosse on the holiday camps which is a sport that he would never have been able to try otherwise! The staff at IM Marsh show continual high standards of professionalism and do a brilliant job. I think a quote from my 11 year old daughter sums it up - ‘I love going to IM Marsh, the sports we do are so fun and we always get to play a proper game. I have learnt how to shoot in basketball today and I am much better at it now! The worst part of the day is when mum comes to pick us up!

the Dragon Liverpool’s Chinese New Year 2012 is set to be bigger and better than ever. For the first time, Bold Street, in the city centre will be part of the official celebrations, and the area will become included in the parade route for the dragon and lion, and is set to be lined with beautiful Chinese lanterns. The main celebrations to mark the Year of the Dragon take place on Sunday 22 January from 11am to 4pm in the China town area including Nelson Street, Berry Street, Great George Street and Great George Square. Following the firecracker display in the Square, many performers will then move to Bold Street to perform outside the Chineserelated businesses. The event will also see the return of the hugely successful ‘Taste of China’ street market which will be on a much larger scale than last year – with ten food outlets and more than 30 craft stalls available.
Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “Being home to one of Europe’s oldest Chinese communities, it’s not surprising that the popularity of this event grows year on year. “Last year we attracted around 20,000 people to the city centre so it’s great news that Bold Street are now involved in the celebrations and I’m sure 2012 will see record visitor figures.” The city council has been working closely with City Central BID to incorporate Bold Street in next year’s plans and it is hoped many businesses will join in the celebrations and promote special offers to their customers. Some of the New Year celebrations start on Saturday 21 January when a funfair and tai chi demonstrations take place on Nelson Street.

Restaura nt Revie w
The Academy by E lli e Brad ley
With such a wide variety of restaurants and cuisines, I love eating out in Liverpool as there is always plenty to choose from. I like to consider myself quite the foodie and was therefore somewhat surprised when a friend mentioned she had gone for a meal in The Academy on Duke Street. I had heard of the Academy, which is part of Liverpool Community College, but never thought of going for a meal there. Upon arrival, we were taken to our table by a very friendly waitress, had our chairs pulled out for us and our napkins laid on our laps. We both ordered two glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon (£3.95 ) and sipped away as we looked through a small but perfectly put together seasonal menu.
The Academy is. The food was beautiful and very well presen ted and as well as the silver service - it was fantas tic value for money. This restaurant is definitely a hidden gem in Liverpool, one which I am very glad to have found. To book call: 0151 252 4512, or vsit: www.liv-coll.ac.uk
To start, I ordered the smoked haddock croque tte with melon and chilli salsa (£4.50) while my partner ordered the roast quail salad with a warm grape and lentil salad (£4.50). Both starter s arrived beautifully presented. The accompanyin g salads from both plates perfectly complimente d the dish. Melon and chilli, who knew? But it certainly was delicious. For our mains, I opted for the sautéed chicke n breast with creamed wild mushrooms and sautéed potatoes (£8.50) and my partner eventually decided on the braised lamb should er with thyme roasted vegetables and mash (£8.50). Once again, both dishes arrived looking very attractive. Both were uncomplicated but beautifully prepared. When the waitress came to clear away our very empty plates, she offered us the dessert menu and I just couldn’t say no. Being the choco holic that I am, I went for the warm chocolate brown ie with White chocolate sorbet (£4.50) and my partner had the apple and blackberry crumb le with fresh custard sauce (£4.50). Both were truly mouth-watering and I quote from my partne r “really really lovely.” We finished our meal with a cup of coffee , while discussing what a great restaurant The Acade my

Ask the expert With Joanne Ritson Family Law Solicitor at Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors
Q: I have separated from my husband and the house is in his sole name. He says I’m not entitled to a penny because I never went out to work as I stayed at home to look after the children and he paid all the bills and the mortgage. Is this true?
A: Unfortunately for your husband, this is not true. The legal ownership of the former matrimonial home does not matter as it does with unmarried couples. However, you must move and take action swiftly as your husband could dramatically reduce the equity in the former matrimonial home by remortgaging and as you are not named on the legal title, you would not have to give consent to this. He could also put the property on the market without your consent. As such, it would be worthwhile you making an appointment to see a specialist matrimonial solicitor as soon as possible, with a view to restricting your husband’s freedom to deal with the property. The solicitor will be able to obtain information relating to the legal title and submit the relevant forms to the Land Registry. Public funding (Legal Aid) may be available to you and you should seek advice about this from the Solicitor. After this important step has been taken care of, it would then be an ideal time to start negotiating with your estranged husband in relation to dividing your assets. However, it is usual that the solicitor would only be able to give you advice about this once they have had the opportunity to assess each party’s financial position. Such information is usually obtained by exchanging financial documents through the solicitors and will most likely include bank statements, P60s, wage slips, mortgage statements etc. If a settlement can be reached, a document known as a consent order can then be drawn up and submitted to the Court within the divorce proceedings. If the Consent Order is approved by the Court, this then becomes binding upon you both. If no agreement can be reached you could be referred to Mediation. Mediators are independent and will discuss matters with you both in order to see if an amicable agreement can be reached. However, if an agreement can still not be reached, there may be little option but for you to make an application to the Court and the Solicitor will be able to advise you of what this entails. The advice stated is intended to be guidance only For further information or help with any Family or Children Law issue call Joanne Ritson on 0151 264 7363 or email joanne.ritson@paulcrowley.co.uk

The purpose of the meeting is to ask for and obtain information from that person, which will help explore alternative ways to resolve family disputes rather than Court proceedings. In particular, this will consider the merits of mediation and collaborative law. Carole Brenan, Partner and qualified mediator says, “Mediation is in essence a voluntary process. The assessment meeting gives couples a chance to meet a mediator separately if they wish, find out about mediation and decide whether it is something that they would like to try.

Since last years changes in the Family Procedure Rules 2010 now require (save in exceptional circumstances) a person who is considering making a Court application to attend a Mediation, Information and Assessment Meeting there has been a lot of confusion amongst divorcing couples as to what this means.
Mediators are trained to spot when people are vulnerable and if they feel that mediation is not right for them, they will tell them.” “As both a mediator and solicitor I fully back the process of trying to resolve couples issues without going to court and in my experience most couples can resolve all of their issues through mediation. The Court will always be available for those who need it but the assessment meeting should direct those people who do not need to go to Court into a much better process. On the last occasion figures were produced in the whole country, 71% of couples who went to mediation resolved issues they had between them. Court procedures can be a lengthy and costly process whereas mediation usually resolves far quicker which can help couples to save money, communicate better and obtain a speedy outcome for the issues they have which can only benefit them and their children.” Morecrofts have a number of qualified mediators so if you would like to find out more information then please call 0800 949 9124 or visit our website at www.morecrofts.co.uk 35
Girls are suckers for all things colourful, sparkly and shiny. A gorgeous bouquet of flowers or a single, romantic red rose would never go a miss. A beautiful piece of jewellery such as a pair of earrings or a bracelet is definitely a real treat and something very unique.
Top tips for new pet owners –
how to handle your
new furry friend This month is no different as we look at the best advice when it comes to looking after new pets, after a recent report revealed that dogs and cats still prove popular when it comes to our children’s Christmas lists. Dogs can make wonderful companions, not only for your little ones but also for you. However, first-time dog owners need to first understand that caring for a dog is a lifelong commitment and that your new pet is definitely not just a plaything.
At Family Go Live Magazine, we like to give you helpful tips and advice when it comes to coping with your new additions. get a newborn, even very young puppies can be taught the sit/stay, down and come commands. Don’t be afraid to refer to dog training manuals and always consider attending a dog obedience course if there is one available in your area.
These will never disappoint and are guaranteed to make someone in your life feel very special. However, occasionally there are times when we have to be slightly more economical with our love. So, this year, we’ve come up with some alternative gift ideas for Valentine’s Day. Why not treat your partner to a car valet? This is often considered a real treat and whilst it may not appear the most romantic of options you would be surprised how spoilt your partner would feel to be treated to this desirable gift, nothing beats getting in to a lovely clean car when you haven’t had to clean it yourself!
Is your partner rushed for time, do they need time to relax, spoil the one you love with a trip to the hairdressers. A voucher for a wash and blow-dry at the hairdressers can either be saved for a special occasion or simply as a way to feel spoilt. If you look great then you feel great, no question about it. It’s a sure way to put a smile on your partners face for the rest of the day.

Valentine’s Day ...
Valentine’s Day isn’t just about the girls though. Sometimes men need to be pampered as well. A massage voucher is the perfect gift to help him relax and de-stress, leaving him feeling extra special.
Whether you stick with the more traditional gifts or decide to go for something a bit more alternative, make sure you enjoy your day, and book a babysitter!
The only minor downside of having a pet is potty-training during the initial stages, which will definitely require a lot of patience and potentially… a lot of cleaning!
Your animal is now a member of the family and needs exactly the same amount of attention, care and respect as the human beings of the household. The best way to get started with your new pet is to socialise with them so that they get used to a variety of people, other animals and the sights and sounds that are going to be constantly around them. This will make them less fearful of new experiences as they grow older. When it comes to their health, again, they need just as much attention as a human being, meaning a good balanced diet, regular exercise and occasional trips to the vet. If you’ve not bought your new pooch yet but you are considering it, try and start with a puppy instead of a full grown dog as you can then teach good manners right from the beginning (plus they are extremely cute!). If you can’t

How to start 2012 the right way
HEALTH & BEAUTY
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Hea lth & Beyauty Director
It’s time to stop eating, change out of your tracksuit bottoms and put down the cake – 2012 is finally here. There’s nothing like Christmas overindulgence to finish a year off, but the New Year has arrived and now it’s time to become better, fitter and slimmer individuals. Most people try to give up smoking, cut down on the calories or start a new relationship with the gym, but what can you do to make sure your new lifestyle lasts and it’s not just a two month affair? Experts would suggest that you try to ease yourself into your new routine and whatever you do, don’t fool yourself into thinking a detox or diet will be easy as January and February can be particularly cold winter months when all you want to do is eat and stay indoors. You have to set realistic goals and not put ones in place that you know will be unachievable. For example, if you tell yourself you’re going to take part in a 10k fun run before the end of February but you’ve never even ran for a bus, it’s not going to happen and the impact of not doing it could massively effect your overall motivation.
Sometimes it can help to go on the same diet as a friend or to go training regularly with a workmate, as you then have someone to share your exercise successes with and also someone to moan about the difficulties with! If you can’t afford to go to the gym, that’s no excuse! Head to your local sports store and invest in some dumbbells (according to your level of fitness) that you can then use in the comfort of your own home. We would recommend starting with a set of 3, which weigh around 5 pound in weight. And finally, it’s extremely common for people to overdo it when they first start their new exercise programmes, with some deciding to do it every day. Many fitness instructors would say that this could lead to a burnout and may even put you off exercise altogether so try to take it just one step at a time.
It’s time to focus on the positives and not dwell on the things that you are cutting out of your life, such as the occasional plate of chips or a glass of wine after work. If you fall off the ‘being healthy wagon’, don’t fear or panic - just get back on it and be determined to carry on. The Essential Directory for Organised Parents

could they help you? More than 40% of people in the UK currently take vitamins with the most common one being vitamin C. Vitamins are essential substances that cannot actually be manufactured by the human body. All of us need small amounts of vitamins for both growth and development or the body simply can’t survive. Did you know that there are two types of vitamins? There are fatsoluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) that can be regularly found in things such as meat, fish, vegetable oils, dairy products and fish, and then there are water-soluble vitamins (B, C and folic acid) that can also be found in meat and fish, but also in fruit, vegetables and wholegrains.
But as the later ones are transported around the body in water, this means your body doesn’t store them, so you need to eat foods containing these vitamins on a regular basis, if not every day. It is always worth noting that watersoluble vitamins are often destroyed in the cooking process so you should try steaming and grilling the foods that contain them rather than boiling them.

A guide to vitamins, minerals and supplements
Always work out the exact measurements of how many vitamins you should take as too little of a single vitamin may disturb your body’s balance, causing health problems, while taking too many could be dangerous. Bear this in mind especially with fat-soluble vitamins, such as A, D, E and K, because it can be difficult for the body to get rid of any excess through urine, which is the most common way to eliminate waste products. And if you are wondering what the difference is between vitamins and minerals and if they are two different things, they are – as minerals actually help the vitamins you are taking to work. The most beneficial minerals include calcium, iodine, iron and magnesium.
