Half of new mothers are concerned about their mental health and many are suffering in silence, according to new research released by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) as it launches its #BeyondBabyBlues campaign.

The initiative aims to encourage people to talk more openly about maternal mental health, to avoid the mistake of dismissing potentially serious mental health issues in themselves, friends or family and to seek help. NCT’s new research found 50% of mothers were still worried about feeling low or depressed when their babies were eight months old and almost three quarters (73%) of fathers were concerned about their partner’s mental health. The NCT’S research has also found a staggering lack of support services for mothers’ mental health. NCT is calling for further significant funding from central Government for improved services for women’s mental health during pregnancy and early parenthood and better access to support and treatment. The charity is also calling on the Government to name and shame Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) who don’t have a maternal mental health strategy in place and hold them to account.

Mums need help to get beyond baby blues, says NCT

Discussing the research, Dr. Sarah McMullen, Head of Research, NCT, said: “We know many women’s mental health can be affected during pregnancy or in the early weeks and months of motherhood and a lot find it incredibly hard to talk about how they’re feeling and also worry about not being a good enough mum. It’s really important they know they’re not alone and feel supported at this crucial time in their lives. Our #BeyondBabyBlues campaign is asking everyone to be more open about maternal mental health, to take it more seriously and to ask for help. “We are very concerned that over a third of mothers who called our helpline about their mental health are suffering in silence and have not spoken to a health professional about it. There currently isn’t enough support for new mothers and much more investment is needed to provide support services and train enough GPs, midwives and health visitors to recognise vulnerable new mums and give them the help they need by offering treatment options and referral if necessary. Early intervention could prevent devastating problems later down the line.”

Government may introduce tougher tests for seven-year-olds

T

Primary school pupils could face formal testing at the age of seven, under new measures being proposed by the Government. Education secretary Nicky Morgan has announced that the Government is considering re-introducing national tests for pupils in Year Two in order to ensure that all children have a firm foundation of literacy and numeracy and can start secondary school ‘ready to succeed.’ Under the proposals, children who fail primary school tests will be made to re-sit them at secondary school. With poor literacy at primary school proven to affect a child’s education right through to GCSE age, the Government claims that monitoring children’s literacy from an early age will help ensure that ‘every child gets the best start in life’. However, teaching unions have criticised the move to bring back standardised tests for seven year-olds, a decade after SATs at Key Stage One were abolished and following the introduction of baseline assessments. Kevin Courtney, deputy general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), said, ‘It is quite staggering the degree to which the Government is unable to understand how their approach to the measurement of the performance of schools, and the system as a whole, is turning schools into exam factories.

“The UK already has the most excessively tested children in the whole of Europe. Children and young people urgently need the formal assessment burden on them reduced. More tests at age seven, involving the labelling and grading of young children, is simply the very last thing that is needed to help improve outcomes or learning. “Standardised testing is shown, from research around the world, to be educationally harmful, unreliable, costly and damaging to children.” Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said, “We support the Government’s commitments to help schools enable more children to achieve expected standards of English and maths at primary school. But continual testing is not the answer, and nor is changing the goalposts every time a minister speaks. “Primary schools are already under immense pressure from having to introduce an untried baseline assessment scheme this year alongside a new primary curriculum, and new tests at the end of Key Stage 2. Yet more changes to testing will not improve children’s English or maths.”

Recent research indicates that there has been a hugely increased demand for tuition across the UK. There are various reasons for this increase, but most of these can be distilled down to the general feeling that extra support results in extra attainment. This, in the majority of cases, is undoubtedly true. If there is a specific need, such as ‘my child is struggling with GCSE Science’, employing a degree-level science tutor for a period of time is a sound investment, whether just before a child takes their GCSE exam or for consolidation throughout the school year. Similarly, where entrance examinations are concerned, the topics featured in these examinations are not necessarily covered in mainstream education, so, again, a tutor at this point can be useful.

EDUCATION

Reasons for Tuition, 1… 2 … 3!

However, perhaps the most important reason for providing your child with a tutor is, quite simply, confidence. It is understandable that even the most engaging and enthusiastic classroom teacher is unable to commit the time for an hour of 1-2-1 tuition for each child. Even one extra hour per week of undivided attention from a dedicated tutor will undoubtedly increase the confidence of a child in their area of educational need.

Studio 76 on why it is Liverpool’s answer to Sylvia Young In the past, if your child was serious about showbiz, their best chance of succeeding in the industry was to move to London to attend a prestigious stage school such as Sylvia Young or Italia Conti. However, now they can train with the best right here in Liverpool, at Studio 76 Performing Arts College. Based on West Derby Road, Studio 76 is the only performing arts school in Liverpool that offers a rounded education for its students. Founder Grace AdamsShort explains: “We have the same model as the big performing arts colleges in London, in that our students complete the whole of their education with us. As well as gaining a BTEC in Performing Arts, we aim for them to achieve 8 GCSEs too. Typically, students will study academic subjects in the morning and then spend the afternoon in the studio.”

Many young people who train in cities outside of London suffer from ‘big fish, small pond’ syndrome, getting a real shock when they audition in the capital and find themselves competing with people from all over the world, all of whom are just as talented as them. “We avoid this by exposing them to ‘London’ early on. For example, we hire in a tutor from London’s renowned Pineapple Studio to teach here once a week, and maintain strong links with the performing arts industry in London so we can put pupils forward for roles that might suit them. The result is pupils who know what standard they need to reach in order to enjoy the career they’ve always dreamed about, and who are well prepared for the psychological side of the industry.” For more information visit www.studio76.org.uk

With fully-funded places, the school is hugely oversubscribed; hundreds of children apply for the 15 to 20 available places per year. All potential applicants must complete a dance audition and academic test as part of their application. It is, however, well worth the effort for the lucky few who gain places. Grace continues: “As well as enabling children to really focus on their passion, we provide a level of education only usually found at private schools. Our classes are small, and we hire only the best tutors for our students. “Our aim is to really prepare our pupils for the realities of a career in dance and instil professionalism in them from a young age.

Getting to grips with ADHD Do you find yourself replacing your child’s PE kit several times a year as they’ve lost it, yet again? Does the prospect of parents evening leave you with that sinking feeling as you know you’re going to hear about how distracted, disorganised and inattentive your little one is? If that’s the case, your child may be one of the estimated 3-9% of young people in the UK living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is characterised by two main strands of behaviour: inattentiveness and hyperactivity or impulsiveness - both of which can make succeeding in mainstream education very difficult, especially when undiagnosed.

children find that talking therapies can help them learn to live with the condition and find strategies for mitigating the negative effects on their life. At school, additional support e.g. working one-on-one with a teaching assistant can often help children cope better with their studies. In more extreme cases, some children with ADHD are prescribed stimulant medicines such as Ritalin to help them concentrate.

Children are usually diagnosed with the condition between the ages of 6 and 12, with boys being three times more likely to be diagnosed with the condition in childhood than girls, although recent research suggests that this is because the condition tends to present as inattentiveness rather than hyperactivity and impulsiveness, which is less likely to be identified as a major issue by teachers and parents. There are no standardised assessments used to diagnose ADHD, rather, a diagnosis is made through using questionnaires, psychological tests and observing the child in question. Teachers’ observations also usually form an important part of the diagnosis process. The condition can be managed in a variety of ways. Many parents find that their child benefits from a strict routine with very clear instructions given at all times. Other

The nation’s toddlers are becoming quite the little socialites according to new research from SMA Nutrition, which showed that more than half (55%) of mums take their little ones to specially organised events such as swimming, toddler gym and toddler discos on a weekly basis. We spoke to Sue Palmer, an independent Developmental Expert about why getting toddlers out and about can help them come on in leaps and bounds… So Sue, what can an exercise class give a toddler that, say, playing with just their mum can’t?

CLUBS & CLASSES

Clubs and classes essential to development, says expert What are the best activities for helping your toddler advance mentally?

Any sort of active, creative play is good for the brain. The point of real play (such as making dens, making mixtures, pretend games) is that it involves imagination, experimentation and problem-solving. What are the best activities for helping your toddler advance physically?

Walking, scooting, running, jumping, sliding, swinging, lifting, climbing, crawling, swimming, riding a mini-bike or trike ... anything that involves physical activity helps children develop coordination, control and physical confidence.

Children are equipped by nature to get the exercise they need through play but in a modern home it can be difficult for them to move around as freely as they should, so they need to get out and about as much as possible. One advantage of exercise classes for city-dwelling toddlers is that they provide an environment where running, jumping, climbing and so on is encouraged -- although outdoor playgrounds or local wild spaces are really just as good. What are the benefits for socialisation?

Clubs of all sorts provide opportunities for parents to meet other parents and children to meet other children. Toddlers have to learn how to get along with their own age group, how to take turns and so on. Modern families tend to be small so it’s important to make contacts with other parents who have children of the same age (especially if your son or daughter is an only child

We talk to… TV presenter Laura Hamilton We chat to ‘A Place in the Sun’, ‘Beat my Build’ and ‘Cowboy Builders’ presenter Laura Hamilton about property, parenting, her plans for 2016 and why she’s supporting a very special children’s charity. You’ve recently had a baby girl, a little sister for your son, how are you finding motherhood? Two is definitely a completely different ballgame to one but I absolutely love it. Tahlia is now 7 months and really starting to interact with Rocco. I think in a few months’ time it will be brilliant that they are so close in age. Rocco is a little character. He is only just two and yesterday he asked me “where is the Milky Way?” Who knows where he picked that up from? It blows my mind how they are like little sponges and no matter what job you do there is no harder job than being a parent. What do you have planned for the year ahead? I’m filming throughout next year with A Place in the Sun. I’m in talks about writing a book and also editing a parent travel website. I’m also working on some collaborations with an interior company. Things always take time but I’ve been in the industry since I was 18 so I’m in it for the long term. You clearly have a real passion for property? How did you get into property renovation? It was a bit of an accident to be honest. I’ve always had an old head on young shoulders! I started saving at 16 and when I was 19 I bought my first place - a little granny flat that needed updating. A month after the sale completed I was made redundant and had no job. I decided to make it

over on a budget, rent it out and move back home. 10 properties on and 14 years later I haven’t looked back. I turned what was a potential nightmare in to a positive thing and developed a love for renovating property and interior design along the way. And last but not least, why are you supporting children’s charity Dreams Come True? I have supported Dreams Come True for a number of years now and I love supporting them because their charity feels like one big family that really make dreams come true for children who really deserve it. Dreams Come True is a national children’s charity serving the whole of the UK. Its mission is simply to make dreams come true for children with serious and life-limiting conditions. Its latest campaign is to help George, a two year old living with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, enjoy his dream of staying at a farm and experiencing life as a farmer.

Relationship breakdown: The Financial Effects By Calum Whelan, James Murray Solicitors

When a relationship ends, often one of the most difficult aspects to resolve is what will happen to the assets held by the parties. And the major difference in determining distribution is whether the parties are married or cohabiting. When a marriage breaks down and divorce proceedings are initiated, these will often be followed by separate but concurrent financial proceedings to determine the distribution of any assets. It is usually hoped that such financial proceedings can be settled as amicably as possible without the need to make an application to court. This would ideally be concluded through mediation which is not only less stressful for the parties but also more cost-effective.

The overall settlement depends on many factors including the length of your marriage, or cohabition prior to this; the ages of the children and the parties; pension provision; and assets available. The financial settlement will generally however start from a point of a 50/50 split. The position surrounding splits involving cohabiting couples has more regard to the ownership of individual assets and whose name they are held in. There is no pension sharing available to cohabitees. With regard to the family home, case law is complex and it is vital cohabitees take independent advice at the time of purchase if costly litigation is to be avoided in the event of separation. Unfortunately there is no free legal advice for these types of cases anymore, save in some limited circumstances, however, there are still affordable options available. At James Murray Solicitors we offer a first appointment for ÂŁ100 where we can discuss options available to you. If you decide that you require further help from us then the ÂŁ100 fee you have paid will be deducted from any other fixed fee options available to you.

If you’ve recently bought a puppy or kitten, it’s essential to keep them safe by getting them vaccinated. These animals’ inquisitive natures bring them into contact with a host of diseases - some of which can also be passed on to humans meaning that ensuring pets are properly vaccinated is the only way to keep them safe long term. Puppies or dogs who haven’t been vaccinated in the last year will need a primary vaccination course to get their protection started. Puppies should be vaccinated at 8 to 10 weeks and kittens at 9 to 12 weeks, while rabbits can be vaccinated once they are 5 weeks old.

LOCAL SERVICES

Keep your pet safe with vaccinations

How does vaccination work? Vaccines contain harmless form of the viruses and other infectious agents that cause the diseases your pet needs to be protected against. Following vaccination your pet’s immune system generates a protective response which will help prevent dangerous forms of these infectious from making your pet ill.

42

This primary course consists of two injections given to two to four weeks apart. After the primary vaccination course, your pet will need to be vaccinated every year to keep up the protection against the diseases. We call this a booster vaccination as it boosts your pet’s immunity. It s not necessary to vaccinate against every disease every year, but all pets require a vaccination against at least some diseases every year. Why vaccinate? Whether your pet spends its time in the garden or out and about, it could be at risk from life threatening infectious diseases. Kittens, puppies and adult cats and dogs are always exploring the world around them and are likely to come into contact with infectious diseases. Vaccination teaches your pet’s immune system in advance how to recognise and defend against infection and disease. This is particularly valuable when some infections cause incurable and often fatal disease.

New hope for eczema sufferers Eczema is a dry skin condition which leaves the skin feeling dry, scaly, red and itchy. While in its mildest form, it can be easily controlled through topical steroids, emollients, antibiotics, antiseptics and antihistamines, for some, the condition is much more severe leaving children and adults struggling with itchy, burning, weeping skin, which doesn’t respond to treatment. However, one obvious area that is often overlooked by parents looking to ease the condition for their children is clothing. Judy Micklethwait, Director of Totally Cool Clothing, which supplies specialist clothing for those with eczema-prone skin or hypersensitivity, explains: “What people don’t realise is that most fabrics in the textile industry are finished with some type of chemical “finish”. Put a fabric with irritating chemicals on next to possibly unprotected skin, you’ll probably get a reaction.” Judy founded Totally Cool Clothing in response to the difficulty she found in sourcing clothing which didn’t aggravate her son’s eczema on the high street. After extensive

research, they formulated a material called BamSil™ - a unique blend of bamboo and silk yarn - which optimises clothing’s breathability and absorbency without allowing excessive moisture loss from the skin. Judy continued: “Using BamSil has made such a difference to my son’s quality of life. Eczema can be such a debilitating condition, but wearing clothing that doesn’t upset his skin has made such a difference to him. He’s got his childhood back.”

Long Term Fitness Success After a Christmas blowout, so many of us will be starting on diet and exercise plans this January, but how many of us will still be sticking to them come February? For Clair Fox of Fit Club Liverpool, the key to long term fitness success is down to education about how to live a healthy active lifestyle through keeping active, eating right and staying healthy. Their organisation provides their clients with 1-2-1 Coaching and support; either in their homes, or at the fit camp in Speke. A free Wellness Profile Consultation is used to identify goals and discuss the need for change. Personalised programmes, balanced nutrition plans and up to 8 free exercise classes per week are all available to a camper, all whilst working

with a personalised coach to help support them. The classes consist of Fit Camps, walking groups, running groups and nutritional workshops for all levels and abilities. She explains: “Many people are just baffled about what constitutes healthy living - there’s so much conflicting advice out there. That’s why for us, it’s all about re-education and support and taking people through behavioural change. We work with our client about what balanced nutrition looks like and how they can become active as a whole family. Short term fixes don’t work, it’s about giving people the tools they need to stay healthy for life.”
