If you’re looking for something to perk you up after the devastation of England’s untimely exit from the World Cup, in this issue we might have just the remedy as we cut through the noise to bring you the best of what’s on this summer, all topped off with some great advice on how to keep your kids healthy, happy and achieving!
to expect at this years Royal de Luxe Giant spectacular. Over in Local Services, we talk about what you need to know about auto enrolment, and in Parties and Playtime, we learn more about naming ceremonies – great alternatives to christenings for non-religious parents.
In Bumps and Babies, we’re talking about everything from apps that will take the angst out of childrearing, to whether yoga can help you get pregnant in the first place.
And as ever, our clubs and classes and out and about pages are packed full of ideas for activities to keep your family happy, occupied and entertained throughout the summer months. Remember, if you ever have difficulty keeping track of everything that’s on in and around Liverpool – you can sync our activities to your iPhone using our calendar. So now there’s never any excuse to miss out on the fun!
In Education, we’re looking at how you can get your children interested in reading through the great new reading clubs at Calderstones mansion, and revisiting the thorny issue of taking kids out of school for their summer holidays.
Best wishes, On a lighter note, in Out and About, we explore some of the great places you can visit via the Merseyrail network this summer and learn what

Could yoga help infertile women?
Antenatal Support
While we all know that yoga classes can be great for improving flexibility and muscle tone, did you know that many people think that it can actually aid fertility? We talked to Jenni Jones of Yoga Bumps and Babies about what it’s all about:
Post-Natal Support
So Jenni, tell us what the thinking is behind fertility yoga? “Fertility Yoga works on many levels. Yoga postures improve circulation and blood flow to the reproductive system. It teaches you to breathe deeply and effectively which helps your body make energy and the body needs energy to make a baby!”

What’s the relationship between yoga, fertility and stress? “We all know that stress isn’t good when you’re trying for a baby. But there is nothing worse than everyone telling you to relax when you feel
you can’t....Fertility Yoga can give people tools to stay calm and well - during what can be an incredibly stressful time - trying for a baby!” Tell us about the nutritional support you provide. “The body needs certain vitamins and minerals in order to make a baby. Pregnancy is more likely to happen if there is a certain environment within the body. So to help, we have a Fertility diet to support the natural process of improving the environment within the womb and indeed the whole hormone system.”

Not content with helping us diet, shop and date, those clever web developers have been rolling up their sleeves in preparation for getting involved with the mucky business of child rearing. We take a look at some of the best parenting apps on the market…
Baby Monitor & Alarm £1.99
If you’ve noticed passers-by giving you and your little one a wide berth recently, it could be time to download the NCT’s Babychange app. Using GPS, it helps you to locate the nearest baby change facility when out shopping. As other users add data and reviews, it creates a map of the best places for feeding and changing your baby across the country.
Toddler Lock - Free
Ah yes, no sooner can they walk they’re getting their sticky fingers all over your smartphone. Bashing the screen until the pintsized geniuses achieve their end-goal – sending your boss a text that suggests you’ve been kidnapped, you’re catatonic or in love with him.
Keeping tabs on your baby just got a bit ‘nextgen’. The easy-to-use Baby Monitor & Alarm’s unique features are designed by parents, for parents.
Or perhaps a combination of all three. But worry no more, with Toddler Lock. Although your phone will probably still be covered in drool, because a key sequence is required before the phone’s functions can be used, so they can’t do any other damage.
The app functions like a normal baby monitor just put your smartphone in the room with your baby, and your second phone will be alerted should your baby start to cry. You can also prerecord mum singing a song to lull baby back to sleep on waking. The app also allows you to create a very business-like activity log, so you can track how your baby sleeps each night.

When they’ve got to go, they’ve got to go. Unfortunately the little tykes seem to take pleasure in doing this when you’re seemingly miles away from any decent baby changing facility.

Got a new baby? There’s an app for that ...
Babies and toddlers love silly sounds, that much we know. If your vocal chords are feeling the strain after two months of continuously doing horse impressions, you’ll be glad to know there’s an app, which means you have to suffer neigh more (sorry)! Enter Fisher Prices’ Animal Sounds app. Which is fully interactive, and able to easily meet all of your baby’s neighing, mooing and roaring needs. They’ll love it and you can give those vocal chords a well-earned rest. www.familygolive.com

As the summer holidays loom, many parents are wondering if their children should be doing something a little more useful than spending six week watching interminable cartoons and launching into impassioned speeches about why getting the paddling pool out is actually a really great idea.

One group of children who will be furthering their education over the summer holidays are Kumon students. We talk to Christine Tyrer, Instructor at the Allerton Kumon study centre about the programme, and why carrying on education over the summer break is so important.

Summer study for smart kids
Why children should still do work during the school holidays? “Daily summer work keeps children’s brains ticking over. In fact, doing just a few calculations each day does wonders for brain power. Kumon exercises don’t mean that children can’t enjoy their summer holidays just that they keep on learning throughout the break.” What else can parents do to keep their kids’ brains active in the summer? “Share the crossword in your newspaper. Buy them a children’s Suduko book. Challenge them to learn a new word every day and use it in an appropriate sentence. School may be out for the summer but learning and growing is for life.”

Get your child reading… at Calderstones Mansion Ever wanted to inspire a passion for reading but not known where to start? The Reader Project, which has just launched at Calderstones Mansion, may be just what you need. We talk to its director and founder, Jane Davis MBE, about what it is, and how you can get involved… What’s the thinking behind the project?
“I set up the organisation to get great books off courses and into the hands of people who might not read them without a friendly personal introduction. We developed our ‘shared reading’ model to make books more accessible.”
What happens at one of your groups?
“We read aloud, in small groups which meet weekly. There’s a very informal atmosphere and people join in –reading or talking – as much or as little as they wish. There’s no pressure. It’s been amazingly successful. We now have over 350 groups meeting every week -London, Cornwall, Glasgow, Derry and places in between.”
The Essential Directory for Organised Parents JULY_AUG_v3.indd 12-13
How can parents get involved?
Pick up a book! Join the library - it’s easy! Sign up for Liverpool’s amazing digital service Read Liverpool or come to a group, they’re free and more than likely we have one near you (have a look at our website for where one might be - or give us a call.) We’ve also published a book – A Little A Loud for children to equip parents and carers with some great stories and poems for reading aloud too.
What’s happening over the summer?
“We’re trying to open up opportunities for children and parents to come together and discover the joy of reading aloud and sharing that experience. We’re running summer school sizzlers this August each Thursday at Calderstones Mansion House. It brings the whole family together to enjoy some well-loved stories alongside craft activities and games. “Summer will also culminate in a three day children’s literature festival. ‘The Secret Garden of Stories’ which will run from the 28 - 30 August with some of the UK’s best loved children’s (and parents!) authors such as Lydia Monks and Cathy Cassidy - and of course there will be plenty of opportunities to do some shared reading in one of our book nooks. Two Thirds of High Earning Britons Missed School for Holidays as Youngsters As the debate around parents being fined for taking their children on holiday during term time rumbles on, a money saving website has fanned the flames. They have conducted research that questions the credence of the idea that holidaying during term time can have a serious negative impact on our education. The poll by www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk revealed that two thirds of Britons earning £60,000 or more a year were taken out of school as a child during term time for a family holiday. The majority of these people claim that they don’t feel going on holiday when they were supposed to be at school impacted their education or career. The sample of high-earners was also asked if they had previously taken their own children out of school during term time for a family holiday before the new rules and fines were brought in. Four fifths of respondents, 83%, stated ‘yes’. Those who had said ‘yes’ were then asked ‘Would you still book family holidays during term time, knowing you would be fined for doing so?’ the majority 74% stated ‘Yes’, suggesting that the restriction on term time holidays may well be flouted by many parents if they are able to easily afford the fine.
The Essential Directory for Organised Parents JULY_AUG_v3.indd 14-15
When asked if they would pay the fine. for taking their child out of school, 61% of the relevant respondents said that they would ‘appeal against the fine’, with the remaining respondents stating they either would ‘refuse to pay the fine’ (31%) or they ‘would pay the fine’ (8%). George Charles, spokesperson for VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said the following: “Taking children out of school during term time for a family holiday is a big no-no these days. The research undertaken stipulated respondents had to earn a minimum of £60,000 per year purely because we wanted to find out if it’s possible to have a high paying job even if your parents took you out of school for a week or two for a family holiday. “Holidays are expensive at the best of times. Travel agencies taking advantage of families by increasing their prices during school holidays when they know most families are going to be booking to go away. It’s not fair that they can do this. I completely understand why parents are taking their children out of school during term time to save themselves a couple of hundred pounds. Parents can’t really win whatever they do!”

Restaurant Review
The Boot Room Sports Cafe When my friend and I decided to take our football crazy boys to the Boot Room Sports CafĂŠ at Anfield for lunch, just the thought of a visit to the ground was enough to have them grinning with excitement. As we arrived at the Boot Room, located directly below the world famous Kop at Anfield, we were greeted by our friendly waiter, who quickly showed us to our table. We arrived just after midday and the place was already looking pretty full. We were lucky enough to be seated at one of the booths, which had its own private TV screen for watching live sports. The sleek modern interiors featured a mix of leather and wood. As you would expect from any good sports cafĂŠ, the football theme flowed throughout the restaurant with mocktails named after Gerrard and Carragher and football memorabilia about the place. The menu had something for everyone with nachos, bruschetta and garlic bread featuring on the starters board. When it came to the mains, we were spoilt for

choice from sandwiches, steaks, burgers and fish and chips to Thai curry, scouse, fajitas, pastas, pizzas and salads. To start, we opted for a plate of nachos to share. They arrived with guacamole, salsa, sour cream and chillies. As a main course, I chose the beef burger topped with crispy bacon, cheese, red onion, lettuce and tomato relish, which was accompanied by chunky chips and coleslaw. It was cooked to perfection and did not disappoint. My friend opted for a maple roasted ham sandwich with coarse grain mustard, red onion and parmesan shavings, which was also delicious. The boys chose to make their own pizzas and they had great fun adding their own toppings to their pizza base. Having devoured their creations, they finished off with a visit to the ice-cream factory, where they added their own toppings to a generous bowl of vanilla icecream.

giant proportions We talk to Claire McColgan, Director of Culture Liverpool about what’s coming to expect at this year’s Giants event (25-27 July) … What is planned for this year’s Giants festival? “We can’t give too much away at this stage as the story and route hasn’t been revealed as yet, but Memories of August 1914 will see the return of the Little Girl Giant and her playful companion Xolo in what is the UK’s flagship 2014 World War One commemoration event. “They will travel around the city, recalling a time when Britain was
preparing for war, with the story partly looking at the recreation of the recruitment of the Liverpool Pals battalions, which 100 years ago saw men volunteer alongside their family members, neighbours and work colleagues, signing up to defend Britain on the battlefields of Europe. Why is the WW1 theme so important? “It’s incredibly important Liverpool has an event which commemorates the outbreak of World War One. The Great War transformed not only this country, but the world. We saw in 2012 how beautifully Sea Odyssey marked the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic – with a beautifully emotional story of love, loss and hope.”

It may not be the most exciting of topics, but your pension pot (or lack thereof) will make the difference between whether you spend your twilight days soaking up the sun in Spain or watching Cash in the Attic in the cold. We take a look at what you really need to know about pensions.
Mediation has been used in the UK for over 15 years, however, it was not until the 22nd April of this year that it became compulsory for divorcing couples to consider it. Before you can make an application to court, you must now have evidence showing that you and your partner have considered mediation. There are of course exceptions to this new rule, for example, domestic abuse victims will not have to go through mediation, if they do not wish.
Many people have the incorrect preconception that mediation is a form of relationship counselling and that it is used when people want to give their marriage another go. The only target outcome of mediation is to make arrangements for the future. When a marriage breaks down, particularly if you and your partner have been cohabiting for a number of years, it is likely children will be involved and that a lot of joint possessions will have been accumulated. Mediation is a flexible and personable way of deciding the best solution to certain issues and how possessions should be distributed. During mediation sessions, the divorcing parties will decide a variety of things including what is going to happen with the house, where children are going to live, and even who gets the family pet.

What is auto-enrolment? Since October 2012, it’s been mandatory for employers to begin enrolling their employees in company pension schemes. You can opt out, but this means you’ll lose out on valuable employer contributions to your pension.

So, I’ll be part of a workplace pension - is that my retirement covered? Sadly, probably not. The BBC has calculated that, for example, a 30 year old earning £20,000 a year, and receiving a 1% above inflation payrise per year and making the minimum contributions permitted would receive a pension of £2,100 at today’s prices. That’s just £175 per month, or £43.75 a week
Retirement is ages away, I’m not going to worry just yet. No! The days of flannel nighties and blue rinses may seem like a long way off, but if you’re earning, you need to be planning. Seek financial advice now about what you can do to maximise your retirement income.
One of the main advantages of mediation is that you are in control of your own outcome. When possible, we always like to get both parties around a table so that we can amicably decide on the best outcome together. If a divorce case goes to court, a judge who doesn’t know a lot of background information will decide your fate and due to time constraints, this is often done quickly and therefore the outcome is not always beneficial. Another advantage is that mediation is a lot more affordable than a divorce case which goes to court. Mediation is also one of the few legal processes where Legal Aid is still available and can be claimed to cover mediation costs if you receive benefits or if you have a low disposable income.

Ah, it’s a familiar tale. You book your summer holiday in February, confident that by the time it comes around you will definitely be two dress sizes thinner and giving Michelle Keegan a run for her money in the looking-fabulous-in-abikini stakes ... Unfortunately, however, life often gets in the way of our 60 minutes cardio a day plans. Meaning that come August, we’re staring down the barrel of a size eight bikini we’re never, ever going to fit into and lamenting the day that Victorian bathing tents ever went out of fashion. So what can you do? Luckily even if you’re only a few weeks away from your holiday, there are a few things you can do to give your bikini body a boost.
Exercise
While no amount of pumping iron will see you completely transform your shape in a few weeks, it can certainly help you feel a bit better! A regime of squats, sit ups and presses will help you tone up. Aim for 30 of these a day until you go away.
Body brushing
Apparently it’s not just your hair that looks a lot better when it’s had a good brush! Body brushing is inexpensive way of smoothing your skin, boosting circulation, and can even help get rid of the bane of beach holidays everywhere – cellulite. Buy a long handled brush made of natural fibre. Once a day (preferably) before you take a shower or bath, brush the skin using long, smooth, strokes in an upward direction. Concentrate on ‘problem areas’ such as hips and thighs.
Moisturizing
Well-moisturised skin tends to look firmer and smoother. And as an added bonus, many beauty experts believe that simply the process of massaging moisturiser into the skin can help to combat cellulite. Buy a good quality moisturiser, and massage after showering.
Fake tan
You may be planning to pick up 50 shades of bronze on holiday, but there’s nothing wrong with faking it before you make it! Tanned skin will make you look thinner, and can even help soften the appearance of lumps and bumps. Just make sure you exfoliate well beforehand.
Finishing touches
Don’t forget those little touches that make us all feel a bit better about ourselves. Get a pedicure or manicure before you go. Make sure you’re thoroughly de-fuzzed, and then set it all off with the best beach accessory of all – a big smile!

Christenings are a way of welcoming little ones into the church, but for most people, they also carry the useful function of welcoming a new baby into the world. Indeed, in these secular times, many parents see that as an even more important function than the sacrament itself. So many non-religious parents are faced with a dilemma. Do they go through with a christening, knowing that they will never keep the promises they make in church, or do they simply avoid the whole process and perhaps feel cheated of the opportunity to celebrate their baby’s birth? Luckily, there is a third way in the form of naming ceremonies. These are essentially the baby equivalent of a register office wedding, giving you a chance to mark the arrival of your child but without the religious ceremony. Many city councils (including Liverpool, Sefton and Knowsley) will run the ceremonies, which will usually last around 20 minutes. The content of the ceremony itself is entirely flexible. Because there are no rites to be performed, parents can plan the whole event

themselves. In practice, this means that most people tend to opt for some sort of welcome to the world speech from the parents, along with some favourite songs or poetry. While, for obvious reasons, godparents aren’t part of the day, many parents will choose ‘supporting adults’ or ‘mentors’ to take an equivalent role. These ceremonies are symbolic, rather than legal though depending on what organisation they work with to organise the ceremony, parents may receive some sort of certificate, or token from the day. A good source of advice on these is the British Humanist Association (BHA). And if you’d like some sort of ‘official’ figure there, there are also able to provide a celebrant to lead the ceremony and help you to plan it beforehand.
