Support for new parents Becoming a new parent can be daunting and it’s sometimes hard to find the time to see what’s out there to help. From social groups for parents, toddler sessions, baby yoga and baby massage to health drop-ins and training support, we’re always on the look-out for new resources available for parents in the area.

Our top finds for this issue are Dingle Dads and the Wirral Mother’s Milk Bank. Dingle Dads at Dingle Lane Sure Start centre also offers a monthly session particularly for dads and male carers to attend with their children. Held on the first Saturday of the month, Dingle Dads enables men to build relationships with other Dads over a breakfast and play session with the children under 5 years old.

Twins? Keep calm and carry on! by Jessica Lea Hogarth Early into my third pregnancy, I’d been feeling really grotty and was offered an unexpected scan. As I lay there, worries multiplying with each chilly squirt of the gel, all the usual questions arose. Is my baby alive? Is everything in the right place? The question is there more than one in there, wasn’t something that popped into mind. I’d gone in dreaming of nothing more than to see a little blob with a heartbeat. What I got were two little blobs, one lying above the other, like foetuses on a bunk bed. Surprise wasn’t really the word. I probably should have seen the signs. My morning sickness lasted ‘til bedtime. It made the worst hangovers of my lifetime seem like a day at the beach. And then there was the fatigue. Well, that’s what the books call it. I’d say being hit by a breeze block was a fairer description. When I showed my husband the scan picture, I hoped for popping corks, maybe even some bump kissing, Beckham style. What I got was a look of sheer terror. We’d debated the practicalities of having a third child and suddenly we were having four. How on earth did that happen? How would we cope? And a million other questions... Such as, how do I breastfeed twins? Do they share a cot or have one each? What happens when they cry in unison? And prams - where to begin... Do I opt for a classic side by side and just hope it squeezes through doorways? Or a trendy, space saving stacker? But then which baby goes up top on display and which rides underneath like the shopping? Then there are tandem pushchairs which vaguely resemble old road sweeping carts. The decisions were as endless as the worries.

But then my babies arrived. And the only thing I hadn’t prepared for were the highlights. Gasps of admiration from strangers in the street. Watching them snooze cuddled up like kittens. Waking up to two gummy smiles, feeling shattered, yes, but also blessed. Now my twins are twelve months old and it’s still double the worry, but a lot more than double the fun. A toddler rushing to cling to each leg when I walk into the room. The giggles they share, the nonsense chats... Those two little blobs took my once manageable life and turned it on its head. SURE START SAVED Parent power prevents children centre closure When government cuts threatened the closure of six Sure Start Children’s Centres in Liverpool, parents in the city were outraged and embarked on a campaign to save the service. In January following the mass parent and staff opposition, the plans were overturned and the centres secured.

Liverpool City Council confirmed that Church and Mossley Hill; Hunts Cross; West Derby; and Childwall and Woolton children’s centres would be saved. The saviour is not without cost – the services will be trimmed down and 19 jobs are set to go in order for the council to make the £1.2m required savings blamed on government funding cuts. Sure Start centres are a vital service for the communities in which they belong. The unique services on offer cover all the parenting bases – from support and advice services for new mums such as breast feeding classes and pre and post natal sessions to baby yoga, multisensory classes and an immunisation clinic.

The centres also offer opportunities for parents to develop new skills to help them in the workplace such as computer training and regular jobcentre plus drop-ins and also improve their health with a weekly fag-ends session for help with giving up smoking. Justine Merton, Children Centre Service Co-ordinator said “We are delighted the centre will be staying open. Our parents mounted an amazing campaign and we would like to thank them and the council for listening to what they had to say.” The parent-led campaigners orchestrated eye-catching protests and handed over petitions with more than 11,000 signatures against the closure plans. The Mossley Hill Children Centre campaign group even held a re-enactment of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s infamous ‘bed-in’ in protest.

SATs Season How to prepare your child for Key Stage exams It’s that time of year again when the SATs debate rears its head with discussions about whether they should be banned, if it’s too much for our kids and what’s the point all together? However, the fact that does remain that if you have a child in either Year 3 (Key Stage 1) or Year 6 (Key Stage 2) of primary school, you’re already preparing for the exams. After talking to our readers, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you survive the exam season. Talk to your child about SATs and reinforce the point that they’re not to worry about them. Many parents claim that exams make children

experience real stress which can be minimised by the reassurance and open dialogue from a parent. Maintaining normal routines and keeping up with after school activities can make a big difference to removing the pressure around SATs season Encourage and support reading – whether for SATs or not, this is important for children’s literacy skills and their imaginations Practice maths problem solving in practical situations such as during car journeys or whilst preparing meals Keep it in proportion. They’re just primary-school tests and won’t have long-term implications even if they don’t go as well as hoped.

Demystifying learning difficulties Learning difficulties, special needs, learning disabilities, special educational needs…it’s daunting for parents to address the minefield of terminology on discovering or suspecting that their child has issues with learning. Around 1.7 million schoolchildren in England are regarded as having some form of special needs, ranging from physical disability to emotional problems. While the number with the most severe challenges has gone down since 2003, the number identified as having milder problems has risen from 14% to 18% of all pupils in England in the past seven years. The term ‘special educational needs’ (SEN) refers to children who have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to access education than most children of the same age. Struggling to keep up with schoolwork and challenges with reading or writing or behavioural problems and difficulties making friends can be indications of SEN but diagnosis can be difficult. Because in many cases, there are no obvious

physical signs, it’s often parents or teachers who first become aware that a child is having difficulties in certain areas of their life, long before any assessments are carried out. If your child has not received a diagnosis but you have concerns about their development, you should contact your GP who should be able to offer advice and refer you to a specialist if necessary. The National Parent Support Network Parent Partnership Services (PPS) are statutory services offering information advice and support to parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN). Under 17 and live in Liverpool? Future Lifestyles is supported by Liverpool PCT. We are pleased to announce that free access to the City’s Lifestyles centres for the under 17’s will return as part of the Future Lifestyles programme. The initiative is possible thanks to the support from Liverpool Primary care Trust, who is keen to encourage more of Liverpool’s youngsters to stay active and enjoy sport. Under the Future Lifestyles programme, under 17’s can swim free during public swimming times as well play badminton or squash. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Pudd le Ducks It was two and a half years ago; during the antenatal classes that I was introduced to the taking my baby swimming. This concept appealed and I began to look into classes and availability, this is when I came across Puddle Ducks.

It’s THE big question to ask a child. They know it; they can see it coming and they’re prepared with their big answer:

On contacting Puddle Ducks it was apparent that they had many classes across Liverpool, the Wirral and Chester and I was able to pick a class and time that suited me. The team were very informative and the classes seemed very structured using songs, rhymes and toys for interacting. Also, it didn’t matter the age of the child as you could join their classes at any age, from newborn babies up to pre-school.

‘Famous.’ They declare. When a recent survey revealing the top three career aspirations for the UK’s younger generation were sportsman (12%), pop star (11%) and actor (11%) compared to teacher, banker and doctor 25 years earlier, it made waves in the press. Many journalists and parents blamed TV and popular culture for enticing our young people into thinking that the road to happiness was paved with Heat magazines and lined with paparazzi. But we could see that ambitions for fame and fortune as reflecting a desire to do well in life and I’m tempted to suggest that our role as parents is to remind our kids that talent, hard work and tenacity are the real attributes shared by their idols. Some ‘stars’ are lucky enough to have all three attributes but it’s pretty much a guarantee, that they all will possess at least one.

Adam Durham, Principal and Choreographer of AJ Dance Productions, said: “We think that every child has the potential to ‘be a star’ and thrive in their chosen career path. However, only those with commitment, passion and dedication to work hard will turn their hobby in to their dream. Our advice would be to encourage your child to express themselves individually and find the right class for them, which will train them to the highest standards.” Personally, I’m not sure that the aspirations of young people have altered too much in 25 years. From football to ballet and drama to musicals, what seems to be clear is that the younger generation share a genuine self-belief which I think is really encouraging. If there’s a glimmer of talent – or even if there’s not – maybe the best thing for us to do is believe in them too.

I started my classes when my son, Anthony, was just seven weeks old. On attending our first class the team were very welcoming, explained all about the lesson, as well as the pool safety procedures before we got in the water.

The class was everything I was hoping for - both by allowing me to interact with other parents and giving me the opportunity to have a special bonding experience with my baby. Anthony was a little unsettled at first, but the teacher gave us lots of reassurance and we did everything at our own pace. The class was very structured but lots of fun, with singing and games incorporated into the session aimed at teaching the babies and children the basics of swimming. Nearly two years have passed and as time has gone on, the benefits of taking my baby swimming have become very clear. He is very confident in the water trying hard to swim and has no fear of the water. He is also learning about safety in the water which has increased my confidence and makes going on holiday a dream. Puddle Ducks do not use armbands to teach, he is not restricted in an inflatable. He can swim independently using his goggles and I am so proud of him.

At 7pm on a cold winter Thursday evening , I discovered the Liverpool Marina bar and grill, nestled quietly within the sleeping boats and dark waters of the Mersey. As we hurried in, we immediately felt the comfor t of the welcoming bar – not only was it warm, but the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The customers are very mixed which is always a good thing…A group of sailor-types were huddled around one table talking boats and drinking pints of bitter, whilst a man with his daughter had their dinner on the comfy-looking couches on the other side of the bar. A group of young professionals popped in for a drink, followe d by a family grabbing a cuppa and a cake. We settled down in the middle of the bar area and perused the menu. It was short and to the point with a good selection of starters, mains and dessert s – there was also the option to grab a light bite with a sandwich or jacket potato. I was pleased to also see a dedicated children’s menu with the usual crowd pleaser s of sausage and mash, chicken burgers etc – all for £4.25 with a drink and ice cream.

Liverpool Marina ba r and grill potatoes and served with the obligatory beetroo t and bread. A winner as far as my boyfriend was concer ned! I stuck with a soft drink but there’s also a good range of wines on offer at very reasonable prices – starting at £12.95 and climaxing at £16.95 for a lovely Rioja. So not only is the Marina a haven for these cold nights, where you can enjoy a great (bargain) meal with family, your partner or friends, but I can’t wait to go back in the summer to sit outside and lap up the beautiful views.

We opted for a starter and a main each and I’ve got to say, I was impressed. The goat cheese tart I ordered (£3.75) came loaded with sweet caramelised onions and a very fresh salad packed with sunblushed tomatoes. The two mini tarts that arrived were light and perfect for sharing. Which we did, but only because my boyfriend’s carrot and coriand er soup (£3.75) was so nice that I couldn’t resist it! Full to the brim with flavour, the soup was obviously homemade and none of that thin, watery liquid that too often graces a bowl. The soup came with a warm roll, fresh from the oven and the only thing that stopped me eating it all was the fish and chips that I knew was coming. And did it make an entrance!?! A huge fish, freshly encased in a golden batter on a bed of about a million chips with a healthy serving of mushy peas and bread and butter – can’t argue with that for £8.50! I couldn’ t finish it all but I would’ve if I could – fresh comfort food at its best! The Scouse (£6.95) was equally impressive and easily enough for at least two people. Loaded with meat and

Q: I have separated from my partner who

is the father of my two children. We have reached an arrangement in respect of contact, but because he thinks that having contact with the children means he is a babysitter for me, he keeps failing to turn up without giving any notice. What can I do?

A: You should always attempt to promote contact between the children and their father provided that to do so would not be contrary to the children’s best interests. It’s important that contact between the children and their father proceeds on a regular and structured basis. Contact continuing to proceed in such a sporadic manner over sustained period may result in emotional and psychological harm to your children.

In the absence of a defined contact order from the Court, there is no legally binding order in place and therefore you may wish to withdraw contact if you felt it was not in the children’s best interests to continue to proceed with contact in its current manner. The children’s father may not exercise Parental Responsibility which is a legal right on its own. Prior to withdrawing contact I would suggest you attempt to resolve matters either by negotiation or with the assistance of mediation. If your ex-partner is not prepared to negotiate, mediate or commit to a structured contact plan for the children, then you may have no option but to withdraw contact in order to protect your children from harm if they are suffering as a result of your ex partner’s actions. If you sought to limit or prevent contact from taking place, you would have to provide substantially good reasons which would warrant any limitation or refusal, and such reasons would have to establish that the children would be at risk of significant harm, should contact proceed. Withdrawal of contact, however, often results in the absent parent bringing an application to Court for contact. When considering such matters, the Court will bear in mind all issues, however the child’s welfare and safety is always their primary and paramount concern. Whilst the court would always seek to promote contact, the court would take the view that any contact would have to be on a regular and structured basis. Any contact would be drawn up in a court order and the Court would expect both parents to commit to contact and abide by the contact terms as set out in that order. Earlier this month, Kenneth Clarke, the Justice Secretary, published proposals to reform the Family Justice System. One of the stand-out proposals is to give divorced and separated fathers greater rights to see their children. The most important change will mean the introduction of a key provision that children should have “an ongoing relationship with both parents.” Will this mean that a child spends equal time with each parent? Well, it could do. But the Ministers involved in these proposals have already indicated that they will not guarantee “equal access”. Kenneth Clarke has also stated that “the interests of the child must be uppermost.”

As a family solicitor, my view is that this is not a million miles away from what is happening at the moment. If a shared residence application is made then the Court will consider the application and make a decision based upon what is in the best interests of that child. It is enshrined in the Children Act 1989 that “the welfare of the child is the Court’s paramount consideration.” Shared residence orders are becoming increasingly common but just like the Ministers, the Courts will not guarantee equal contact. There are many reasons for this, but one of the most common reasons is that the Courts are not keen on a child spending their school week in two different homes. It remains to be seen how the Government plan to implement these proposals, and, as to how the presumption will be enforced? Will it mean an application to the Court? If so, there will be problems as to how such cases are to be funded. The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill contains proposals to reform Legal Aid so that funding for most family cases will be withdrawn. For those not quite tempted outside just yet, indoor cactus gardens are a unique way to engage children with less conventional plants. Arranging cacti of different colours and varieties together can offer a really fresh and creative approach to traditional gardening that can engage older kids who might seem a little less interested in your horticultural efforts. This can be a project that can continue and develop throughout the year as cacti are easy to maintain and require little watering.
