Welcome to... The Essential Directory for Organised Parents The nights are just starting to get light again after the winter, the daffodils are tentatively starting to bud and we’re even contemplating going out without seven layers on. That can only mean one thing, spring is here! And to celebrate, we’ve got yet another packed edition of Family Go Live. This month we’re doing everything from chatting motherhood and turning 30 with Coleen Rooney, having a kickabout with Liverpool Ladies FC, doing a little window shopping with Shop Family Go Live and salivating in anticipation of the upcoming Liverpool Food, Drink & Lifestyle Festival. We’re also taking a look at some great ways to keep the kids entertained, including the city’s brand new children’s attraction Storybarn, planning the perfect Easter egg hunt and checking out some apps that will help spark an enthusiasm for nature. And as if that’s not enough, we’ve also got the usual mix of great competitions, extensive things-to-do listings and money-off vouchers. Perfect for putting a spring in your step! Best wishes, The Family Go Live team

Preparing your pet for a new baby All too often, the patter of tiny feet is accompanied by fears over how our fourlegged friends are going to react to the new addition to the family. So we spoke to Sarah Beeson MBE, a former health visitor and parenting expert about what families can do to ease the transition for our pets, and for her, it’s all about sensible planning. She explains that if you’re expecting a baby and up until now your dog has always been the “baby” in the family, getting them ready for the new arrival well in advance will make it easier on all of you. “It’s a bit like caring for a toddler when a new baby arrives,” explains Sarah. “If you’re in a relationship, talking about how you’ll manage your responsibilities as a pet owner whilst meeting your new baby’s needs will put you ahead of the game. Today’s parents often work as a team which means all the pressure isn’t just on new mums. If one of you takes the dog for a walk while the other one puts the baby down for a nap, all the hard work doesn’t fall on you.” One key way that new mums and dads can make it easy on themselves is by calling in the cavalry and asking friends and family to help. “When your baby arrives it’s natural to have days when you feel overwhelmed,” reassures Sarah. “Having some friends and family who can step in to take on baby and dog duties will help you get the rest you need.”
Sarah also explains that putting safety paramount is essential when dealing with dogs and young children, even if you believe that your dog would never bite a child. She warned “No matter how nice your dog is, it’s better to be cautious as accidents can happen in a spilt second.”
Keep your baby safe around your pet: Sarah’s top tips 1. Never leave your dog unattended around your baby or put them close together. If your baby pulls or hits the dog they are likely to retaliate on instinct. 2. Play it cool. Don’t try too hard to get your dog to like the baby, they’ll become friends in their own time 3. Be realistic about your dog’s ability to understand and recognise it’s natural they may feel pushed out.
Sarah Beeson MBE will be speaking at the Baby Show (www.thebabyshow.co.uk), which is taking place at the NEC, Birmingham on the 13-15 May 2016 and at the Olympia, London on the 21-23 October 2015.

Sammy Winward talks about her new book for children Actress Sammy Winward is famous for her role as Katie Sugden in the ITV soap, Emmerdale. Since leaving, Sammy has been busy writing a book for children about a time-travelling princess, Phoebe - A historically accurate snapshot of the lives of the Tudor princesses. We caught up with her to find out more… So, Sammy, tell us about your new book? “It’s essentially a fact-mixed-with-fiction book about the Tudor princesses. I always find that history is so much easier to digest when it’s combined with a good story.”
What inspired you to write this book? “All girls love Disney movies, but there is another side to being a princess. I have always worried that, particularly as young females, we are brought up on a rich diet of fairy tale princesses, whose single destiny seems to be that of meeting a handsome prince and living happily ever after. I have tried to do something very different, while still retaining the magic of these stories.”
You’re really interested in history? What sparked that interest? “I’ve always been interested in history, ever since I was a little girl. When I left school at 16 to pursue my acting career, my mum really encouraged me to carry on educating myself whenever I could and learning more about history was definitely part of this.”
You were on Emmerdale for 14 years, what motivated your decision to leave? “It’s been a great journey on Emmerdale for the last fourteen years. But now I would like explore other things. I have always been passionate about history
and, had I not pursued a career as an actress, my chosen destiny would have been a historian. “It was such a hard decision though. My best friends are all on set, I was still getting good storylines and obviously, regular money isn’t always easy to come by. But I wanted to take some risks, try new things and grow as an actress. And of course, it’s also allowed me to spend more time with my daughter.”
Do you still keep in touch with your colleagues from Emmerdale? “Yes, I’ve grown up with them. I talk to Natalie J. Robb (Moira Bardon), Charlie Webb (Debbie Dingle), Laura Norton (Kerry Wyatt) and Lucy Pargeter (Charity Dingle) all the time.”
What have been your career highlights? “There are so many, but I really loved doing the live episode in 2012, even though it was both excruciating and terrifying. I don’t think I’d like to do it again, though! There was tension on the set for about 4 weeks before hand, so when it finished, we were all like wild animals!” Princess Phoebe Meets the Tudors by Sammy Winward is published by Candy Jar Books. It retails at £6.99 and is available from Amazon,www.candyjarbooks. co.uk and all good bookshops.

Everton in the Community created history in September 2012 when it was the first “Club – Community” scheme in the country to be awarded funding by the Government to open a Free School; a ground-breaking initiative for young people across Merseyside. It caters for young people aged 14-16 and offers an alternative education pathway to those where traditional methods in mainstream schools have failed. The Free School also offers an ‘open’ Sixth Form and attracts many 16-19 year old students who choose to study sport within the environment and surroundings of a Premier League Football Club.
The school’s curriculum offers a balanced combination of challenge and choice. Students have regular on-going and structured access to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science which are delivered creatively and in varied contexts with the paramount aim of the curriculum being to ensure a non-compromising focus on core learning and to support students to make positive additional curriculum choices to nurture a love for learning.

Should mums and dads get back to school? It’s time to dig out that pencil case and get an apple for the teacher, as if David Cameron has his way, soon all mums and dads will be getting back into the classroom. He has said that he wants to make it “normal” and “even aspirational” for parents to attend classes in order to learn how to better communicate, discipline and play with their children. Unveiling what he has dubbed a ‘Life Chances Strategy” in January, he said “In the end, getting parenting and the early years right isn’t just about the hardest-to-reach families, it’s about everyone. “We all have to work at it. And if you don’t have a strong support network – if you don’t know other mums or dads, having your first child can be enormously isolating. “Of course they don’t come with a manual, but is it right that some of us get so little guidance?” He then went on to say that while health visitors were fantastic for supporting parents in the early years, the same parents were often left floundering later on when it came to good play, communication, behaviour and discipline. He continued “We all need more help with this – it’s the most important job we’ll ever have. So I believe we now need to think about how to make it normal – even aspirational – to attend parenting classes.”
The proposals received a mixed response from commentators and the public, with many saying that this was the ‘nanny state’ going too far and suggesting that given that Mr Cameron famously once left his own child in a pub, he should not be viewed as a leading voice in effective parenting. Imelda Redmond, chief executive of the charity 4Children, said that while a move towards more positive parenting could only be a good thing, parenting classes are certainly not a panacea for all the problems families face. She said: “Making parenting classes the norm will help many families to bring out the best in their children and manage the difficulties that all parents face. “However, parenting classes and relationship support will not, by themselves, radically change the life chances of children living in poverty. Families are telling us that despite their best intentions, long working hours and financial pressures are having a detrimental impact on family relationships. Helping families to achieve a better work-life balance, and financial security, will also need to be addressed if the Prime Minister’s strategy is to work.”

Here’s four things we love about it… The Atmosphere The atmosphere at big games at many football clubs can be electric, and Liverpool Ladies FC is certainly no exception, with die-hard ‘super fans’ banging drums and tooting horns during every home game.
There’s plenty to keep kids entertained What really sets it apart is there’s a fantastic family atmosphere on match days. An hour before kick-off
Liverpool Ladies FC opens up its Family Park, which is packed full of things for kids to enjoy. For example, there’s an inflatable 5-a-side pitch, a face painter and of course official Liverpool FC mascot, Mighty Red, is always happy to pose for a few selfies.

Taking the plunge: The benefits of baby swimming classes With NHS guidelines stating that infants don’t need to have had their immunisations before they go swimming (even underwater) hitting the pool is one of the few things that parents can do with a baby literally from birth. We take a look at seven reasons why new parents should be digging out their swimming costumes and taking the plunge…
It teaches water safety: Drowning is still the third-highest cause of accidental death among children under five in the UK. Learning to get to the side, hold on, get out and/or swim could help save your child’s life. Introducing children to swimming early can also help to prevent a fear of water later on. It’s great for physical and mental health: Swimming provides a complete physical work-out, strengthening hearts and lungs and also stimulating the vestibular system. It’s also one of the few activities that stimulates all five senses taste, smell, touch, sight and sound.
It develops coordination: Being in the water
once found that babies who swam regularly had advanced motor development, social skills and intelligence.
It boosts confidence: Exercises that involve moving independently in water and holding on to the side are wonderful for improving confidence and social skills.
It enhances babies’ wellbeing: Warm water relaxes babies, while swimming helps to stimulate their appetite. The good news for mums and dads is that it improves sleeping and eating patterns. It can help premature babies or those with special needs: For children with
It helps to develop learning skills:
special needs, swimming can help with muscle development and coordination, while swimming can help premature babies catch up on any stages of motor development they may have missed, and increased resistance in water will help build their strength and muscle tone. Because swimming stimulates all the senses, it can also help if a baby’s prematurity has resulted in any sensory defects.
Responding to repetitive voice commands can sharpen a baby’s mental skills and increase their levels of understanding. A German study

helps improve co-ordination and balance, and learning to swim with toys helps with hand-eye coordination and motor skills. A 2009 study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology found that babies who swim have better balance and can grasp objects more easily.

Brand new format for Liverpool Food & Drink Spring Festival Annual large-scale event to include new lifestyle offer. The foodie fun isn’t finished once Easter is over this spring, as The Liverpool Food, Drink and Lifestyle Spring Festival takes place in the city, this coming April 23rd and 24th in Sefton Park. Devised by the organisers of the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival, which is nearly in its tenth year, the new format of this sister festival sees the spring event expand into a wider lifestyle offer - now with zones dedicated not only to food and drink, but homes, gardening, craft and even focusing on body and mind. The spring festival site will be divided into five areas, each with its own look and feel, including The Woodlands which takes its inspiration from outdoor activities and crafting, The Pasture, where stylish ideas come to life and The Meadow, where visitors will find many of the region’s best independent street food operators and local producers. Talking about the changes for this year’s event, the Festival’s Director Denise Harris said: “We’re very excited about our April festival and know that the public are going to love the new ideas we’ve brought to the event. “Whilst there’s still an amazing food and drink offer at its heart, we wanted to make the event more about Spring – a time of reinvention and new life, which can be as relevant to your home as your health. “After launching the Spring festival last year, so many producers and independent traders asked to get involved that we felt the time was right to widen the content – offering something completely different for the visitors to the established September Festival.
As well as a fantastic street food village with over twenty traders, there’s a whole new area dedicated to home style and a wide variety of vendors ranging from handmade garden furniture manufacturers to artisan chocolatiers and Vintage photo Booth - there are also a number of workshops to take part in, including soap and candle-making plus up-cycling classes where visitors can breathe life back into previously loved furniture. Junior festival-goers will be equally at home with the new festival style – each area will have plenty of activities to get involved with, from crafting right through to tasty make-its like Water Babies’ biscuit and cake decorating workshops! Denise continued: “We want people to really experience each of the different areas we’ve created, where, by some careful programming we’ll hopefully captivate and engage festival- goers and to charge (and re-charge) minds young and old, in a full day out for all the family” Tickets for the Spring festival are now on sale. Encouraging your child to get out and about in the great outdoors can be hard when they’re seemingly surgically attached to their smartphone. However, downloading this collection of great apps is the perfect way to enable them to indulge their love of technology and get back to nature… Meet the Insects: Forest Edition (iPad) Your average garden or park is teeming with creepy crawlies, and this app can help your little one learn all about them. There’s loads of information, videos and photos about common beetles, ants, butterflies and moths, a quiz for them to test their knowledge, and even an observation journal so kids can add their own discoveries.
Birdsnap (iOS) Ornithology meets technology with this handy app, which uses image-recognition technology to identify birds from photos with incredible accuracy. The app needs quite close shots to work, so it’s also perfect for kids who want to perfect their hushed, David Attenboroughstyle tones…
Geocaching (iOS, Android, Windows) You’re never too young (or too old) for a bit of geocaching. It’s essentially a giant digital treasure hunt, using your phone’s GPS to locate containers placed by other players. The containers could be in parks, under bridges, or on top of hills – it’s a great activity to join in with your child, and an excuse for a good walk too!

Story time at Calderstones Park Looking for a new and exciting way to enjoy sharing stories and reading with your children? Look no further as the Storybarn launches in Liverpool Based in the heart of Liverpool’s Calderstones Park, the Storybarn, created by The Reader, aims to foster a love of reading in both young people and adults. And a trip to the Storybarn is full of surprises. Where else can you read a story while sitting inside a robot? Or not just read about dinosaurs, but dress up as them too? Or enjoy listening to a story told by someone in a real hot air balloon?
For more information, visit: thestorybarn.org.uk
At the Storybarn, the aim is very simple: bringing books to life and getting kids enthusiastic about reading. It’s a place where you can hear both awed silence as the children enjoy a tale from one of the projects “story sharers” or screeches of laughter as little ones get to grip with the very extensive dressing up box. Oh, and it’s all topped off with a giant slide! This is the only place in the North West where children can enjoy play and craft activities, while developing a love of reading that will help them to build their literacy skills and give them the best start in life. And if all that imaginative play has tired you out, why not stop off at The Reader Ice Cream Parlour next door?

Stress Control Class... In a cosy room in Liverpool city centre, Talk Liverpool group facilitator Colette Graham welcomes a group of thirty men and women to a six week stress control course. The session is part of a city wide talking therapy programme run by Talk Liverpool for anyone aged 16 or over living in Liverpool or registered with a Liverpool GP. It’s free and you can refer yourself. ‘Stress’ describes a range of problems from anxiety, depression, panic, insomnia, poor self-esteem, low self-confidence, irritability and anger. It’s a normal reaction, but if it starts
to impact on your life it’s time to get help. The course aims to help you feel better by teaching you better ways of handling your problems. Talking therapy focuses on a person’s thoughts and behaviour, helping them to develop coping strategies. Each session lasts 90 minutes, but there are plenty of breaks and you can leave the room anytime you need to. You are welcome to bring along a friend or relative for support. This group is equally split between men and women of all ages, sitting in rows. This session focuses on controlling panicky feelings and getting a good night’s sleep. There’s a sense of anonymity. Colette explains: “No-one has to speak, you sit back and listen – and everyone’s here for the same reason.” The course uses simple and often humorous slides to illustrate a point. Heads nod as tutors cite common stressful scenarios. Handouts

help people to revisit the advice at home. People get most from the course by coming to all six sessions and drop out rates are low, but Colette is mindful of the effort that they make to attend. “If you are caught up in your stress, it’s like being in the eye of a storm, so we always congratulate people for staying with the programme. I’m passionate about this sort of therapy; it’s amazing to watch people get so much from it.”
For more information or to register your place on a course, call Talk Liverpool on 0151 228 2300.
More about Talk Liverpool
It’s an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service which aims to provide psychological treatments, sometimes called talking treatments, to help people who have common mental health problems such as feeling stressed, low in mood (depressed) or very nervous (anxiety). The service sees clients quickly and offers the kind of help wanted in the way people want it. They can work with people on the phone, face to face, on line and through offering a range of courses and workshops, as described above. People can be seen at one of the hubs or at a health centre or community venue.
The service is available through all GPs and primary care staff in Liverpool, a range of voluntary sector organisations, Jobcentre Plus and by self-referral either online on the website www.talkliverpool.nhs. uk or by phone 0151 228 2300. 45 MARCH_APRIL.indd 45

The hidden costs of being a woman Picking up some ladies’ razors or a pair of jeans this week? Well prepare to pay over the odds, as new research has revealed that women pay more for ‘women’s’ products than equivalent items pitched at men. Analysis of hundreds of products by The Times newspaper found that there were major discrepancies in the pricing of products aimed at men and women. For example, women’s Levi 501 jeans were found to cost an average of 46% more than the male version of the same product, despite having identical waist and leg lengths. Similarly, it was found that Tesco charges double the price for women’s pink disposable razors than the equivalent men’s product. Maria Miller, chairwoman of the Women and Equalities Committee, commented: “Retailers need to explain how they can be charging such different prices for items which look identical.”This is just the sort of thing the committee can consider and make sure that in this instance retailers are made to account for what appears to be price discrimination based on sex.” She added: “I think many women will understand the point that is being made, particularly when it comes to clothing and toiletries.
“Sometimes the difference in price is noticeable, but I think an independent piece of research like this, an investigative piece of journalism, has really shone a spotlight on how widespread this problem appears to be.” The Fawcett Society, which champions equality for women and girls, has singled out Boots for particular criticism, pointing out that women are charged £2.29 for a pack of 8 own brand razors, while men pay just £1.49 for a pack of 10, while Men’s Botanics anti-ageing eye roll-on is £7.29 and the same products costs £9.99 when marketed at women. It has since launched an online petition urging Boots’ CEO, Simon Roberts, to review this ‘sexist pricing’.
