Your options at

16

16 ptions for those leaving full time education at the age of 16 are no longer limited. Whilst the option is open to continue your education at school, you can also go to college, take up an apprenticeship or a part time training course. These alternative options come along with the benefit of learning new skills and earning money.

O

Indeed, the most obvious option for many is to stay in education and progress into sixth form going on to study AS and A Level Exams. If this is the

16

route for your child, it is important to try and choose these 3 or 4 subjects earlier on in year 11. It is crucial to make the right choice - as your A-Level choices shape the degree you will go on to study and ultimately later your career path. The academic jump between GCSEs and A-Levels is notoriously large, so it is essential to choose subjects you are not only good at, but more importantly, that you enjoy too. However, if staying in education is still of interest, but A-Levels are too much too handle, then going to college to study a higher education diploma, NVQ or BTECH course may just be the best option. This level of study focuses

less on classroom based learning and integrates students into the work place. For those looking to plunge themselves straight into work and divert away from the educational route, then apprenticeships are the way forward. Indeed, apprenticeships have become increasingly popular in recent years and set an excellent grounding directly into the workplace. Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study, and often come with a wage. Apprenticeships offer fantastic exposure and insight into the working environment, and apprentices will learn and train from experienced staff members to gain invaluable skills

Top for helping your child Tips during 11+ exams 1.

Do not overload your child! Allow them plenty of breaks, even if they’re only 5 or 10 minutes long. This helps them to take it all in.

2.

Bear in mind that typically a child’s attention span ranges between 30 minutes to 50 minutes. Part of the build-up process is to increase the attention span gradually.

3.

Getting a tutor in the run up to exam period to help prepare your child for the exams

4.

Revising in a few different places around the house, or even in a library means that taking an exam in a new place becomes easier.

5.

If the exam is in the morning, practice exam papers at that time. This will help your child perform to the best of their ability.

6.

Visual aids such a mind maps (spider diagrams) showing all the different parts of a topic that needs to be learnt. This could be useful to summarise a subject, link information in different ways and mark progress giving your child a sense of achievement.

7.

Practising papers under exam conditions shows if the student needs to work on the speed by which he/she answers as every mark counts.

8.

Plenty of exercise and nutritious food is a must to keep their brains in good working order – in terms of treats stay away from sugary rewards!

9.

Make sure to sleep! Ensure your child is sleeping properly so that they are fresh and happy for another gruelling day at the 11+ treadmill.

unauthorised absences

Ah. Family holidays. You can’t beat treating the family to a fun filled break in the sun to relax and unwind. Of course, taking your whole family on holiday tends to be rather on the pricey side. e’ve all been there, searching just how much cheaper it may be to pull the kids out of school for a term-time holiday. Remembering the excitement when you got to finish school the week before the term finished as one of the best feelings. However, those days are long gone. Major clamp downs have been introduced within the UK on unauthorised absences from school. If a school declares an absence unauthorised, the council can fine a parent £60 per child, which doubles to £120 if not paid within 21 days. However, the fines appear to have not proven a deterrent as the number of unauthorised holiday absences has continued to rise. Almost a million children missed at least one day of school in England, despite the threat of fines. Teachers said the fines were a “blunt instrument” and the problem was down to the price of holidays.

W

In September 2013 the Department of Education introduced rules that constricted the power of headteachers to grant authorised absences for family holidays, restricting authorised leave to “extraordinary” circumstances, such as funerals. Ever since this introduction, the rate of absences due to agreed holidays has plummeted, from nearly one in 10 pupils to fewer than one in 50. Yet in the meantime, the number of pupils taking unauthorised family holidays has risen at the same time, from 4.4% to 6.1%. The news follows after John Platt, a father from the Isle of White, won a case in May 2016 at the High Court to overturn a £120 fine levied for taking his daughter to Florida during term time. The High Court ruled that the fine was unlawful on the basis that his daughter had an excellent attendance record. The result caused a surge in term-time bookings across the country. Mr Platt argued

that taking his daughter on a family holiday to a villa in Florida to relax was better for her development than staying at school. However eight months later, the Isle of Wight Council appealed against the verdict and at the beginning of April this year, the Supreme Court upheld the ban on parents taking their children out of school for family holidays during term time. The government website clearly sets out the national guidelines on the matter, stating:

{

You have to get permission from the head teacher if you want to take your child out of school during term time. You can only do this if: You make an application to the head teacher in advance (as a parent the child normally lives with) There are exceptional circumstances It’s up to the head teacher how many days your child can be away from school if leave is granted, but remember you can be fined for taking your child on holiday during term time without the school’s permission! 8

Parent Review

Airborn Academy BY COLLEEN SEED Being a mum of 3 children automatically fills all the pages of my diary and makes for an extremely busy schedule! I have a very grown up 16year old daughter and 9 year-old boy and girl twins. Of course, it is hard to find a common activity for all kids to enjoy. That’s where Airborn Academy came in. The best thing I have found since discovering Airborn Academy is that the classes appeal to both boys and girls alike, so it is perfect for me. My children absolutely love the freerunning sessions. The coaches are always very enthusiastic and the children watch in awe as they demonstrate their tricks to inspire them. They work in small groups with fully qualified coaches. It is great to see their confidence and skills growing, which they are now able to utilize in their daily routines. A trip to the park or just walking along has potential for them to plan a freerunning route, and they make short work of any climbing frames. They also offer grading and a coloured band system which shows them they are improving their skills and highlights the areas they need to work on. The centre also offers lots of other classes which we have tried. They loved the aerial silks and hoops class and also the tumbling. I enjoy sitting with a coffee, relaxing and chatting to staff and other parents whilst watching the children socialising and making

friends. It is great to see them at the end of the session rosy cheeked and excited about achieving new skills. The excitement carries all the way through the holidays, where Airborn Academy put on various holiday camps. My children have absolutely love to go to these. In particular, they raved over the Red Delta course where they worked in a small group to plan a story board and, over a few days, even worked with a Go Pro to film themselves. They then worked in the editing suite to bring it together and pick music. On the last day all the parents come in for a ‘premier’ and they can take their short film away to keep.

My 16-year daughter has also been enjoying trampoline classes and the aerial silks. She thrived off the centre to such an extent that she even chose to do her work placement there. Here, she learnt great customer care skills for the future and mixed with fantastic professional staff who are very passionate about their centre. They strive to improve their facilities and your experience constantly, and this all makes a very enjoyable experience.

AIRBORN ACADEMY ARE RUNNING THEIR MAY CAMP FROM 29TH MAY TO 2ND OF JUNE. FOR MORE INFO EMAIL INFO@AIRBORNACADEMY.COM

Restaurant Review

Lefteris Greek Taverna Nestled into the heart of Allerton road suburbia lies the gem that is Lefteris Greek Taverna. Having never dined here before, I was extremely eager to try it. Bringing along my friend to enjoy the experience, it is fair to say that we were thoroughly impressed by the Mediterranean flavours. Setting foot in Lefteris is like being transported into an old school Taverna deep in the heart of the Greek isles. I was immediately made to feel at ease by the minimalist interior. The cosy restaurant was sprinkled with picturesque images of authentic landscape. Priding itself on Traditional Greek hospitality, each customer is made to feel like royalty. The owner took delight informing me that it is the customers who are the real reason why the place has been running for over twenty years. And from simply looking at the array of tempting choices on the menu, I knew immediately why! I was instantly impressed by the huge variety of meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes on offer, making it even more difficult to choose just one meal to order! It covered everything from charcoal grilled kebabs with any type of meat imaginable, freshly grilled and fried fishes, succulent steaks, and traditional Greek dishes with its own Lefteris twist. Dining with my friend who is a vegetarian, he

is often limited to only one fish option and vegetable dish at restaurants. However, at Lefteris, to say he was spoilt for choice would be an understatement! As for the wine menu, I wanted to try everything on the menu! Serving a variety of international red, white and rose wines, the menu covered everything from classic Italian and French glasses to more traditional Greek bottles. To start, we shared an authentic plate of humus served with a batch of soft, warm and fluffy pitta bread, along with deliciously thick haloumi, melting in your mouth and charcoaled to perfection. For my main course, I chose a traditional meat moussaka. Tender soft meat lay drizzled in a bed of creamy melted cheese and oozed delicious aubergine, creating a burst of Mediterranean flavour. My friend opted for the seabass, the largest piece of fish we had set our eyes on! On the side, we could not resist

a portion of fresh chunky chips. These were not just French fries, but golden brown and crisped with excellence, accompanied with a large bed of flavoursome rice. Far too full to order dessert, at the end of the meal we were brought an alluring fruit platter to end the meal, a perfectly refreshing dessert on a spring evening. Traditional Greek dishes baked to perfection. No fuss, no fancy furnishing, just simple, fantastic authentic Greek food.

LEFTERIS HAS A WIDE VARIETY OF MEAT, FISH AND VEGETARIAN OPTIONS! CALL 0151 475 5777 TO MAKE A BOOKING, OR POP IN TO SEE THEM AT 63 ALLERTON ROAD L18

Autism Spectrum Disorder Julie Simpson - Autism Adventures

utism is a nonneurotypical, lifelong developmental disability that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others. Due to its vast complexities, a person with autism will not necessarily fit into one clear cut definition of the condition. Autistic people can often be characterised by, but is not limited to, challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. The main features of Autism – problems with social communication and interaction – can often be recognised during early childhood. Some features may not become noticeable until a change of situation, such as when the child starts nursery or school.

A

There is not one autism but many types, caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. It is a spectrum condition in that autistic people share certain difficulties, but being autistic will affect them in different ways. Some autistic people also have

learning disabilities, mental health issues or other conditions, meaning people need different levels of support. Autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people. To people with the condition, the world can appear chaotic with no clear boundaries, order or meaning. People with autism may also be more sensitive to everyday sensory information. Autism is not an illness or disease and cannot be ‘cured’. However, there are copious levels of support available to help children and parents including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, educational support. It’s estimated that about 1 in every 100 people in the UK has Autism. More boys are diagnosed with the condition than girls. As Autism has no visual traits, it is hard to identify a person as being Autistic. Thankfully, in today’s day and age, there is a wide and growing network who provide help, assistance and training to support those identified as being Autistic and those around them. Nugent’s schools and services for children and young people provides up to date therapeutic care and surroundings that aim to help those

with autistic symptoms. The school strives to put all young people’s social, emotional and mental health at the centre of our work. Nugent thoroughly researches new and innovative ways to better support our young people who are on the autism spectrum, and help them achieve their personal goals. Liverpool born and bred Julie Simpson set up Autism Adventures Liverpool in 2015 in an effort to make Liverpool the first Autism friendly city. The aim of Autism Adventures is to change people’s perceptions of Autism in a positive way. Autism Adventures offers business training, staff workshops and awareness programmes that trains business and schools to be Autism aware and Autism friendly. So far, the programme has trained over 30 companies across the city and hopes to expand into schools to train staff and parents alike. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT JULIE ON JULIEPSIMPSON@GMAIL.COM

Fitness

Po s t n a t a l for all

ntenatal and postnatal Pilates is a great way to keep fit and active during and after pregnancy. The exercises are functional but very safe, and prepare mums-to-be for labour and giving birth. Your body changes physically, mentally and emotionally throughout each stage of pregnancy and Pilates exercises are designed with this in mind. It is advisable to wait until after your first scan, if you have never practiced before.

A

Postnatal Pilates can commence again after your 6-week health check. Qualified Pilates instructors can help re-build core strength, including pelvic floor strength, which can be weakened during birth, and help regain your pre-baby shape. It is extremely important to re-introduce your body back into exercise after giving birth in a gentle and safe way. New mums are often eager to jump straight back into high intensity exercise programs; however this has potential to do a lot of damage. No matter how fit you were pre-baby, your body has altered significantly - hormones have gone totally crazy, fatigue has kicked in, nutrition in many cases has gone out of the window. So, it is essential to try and slow yourself down, to help you heal. The first place to start would be working on your breathing and nutrition, where you can then move onto the Pelvic floor and finally tackle the core. Postnatal Pilates will challenge you in a very safe and controlled way. Fitness For All Gym, Woolton, Liverpool, have set up a fantastic new range of classes specialising in Antenatal and Postnatal classes offering a friendly atmosphere to focus on posture, breathing and relaxation to become happier and healthier mums! More for information, visit www. fitnessfa.co.uk/ Liverpool yoga guru Jenni Jones, states that “Most women are under some level of stress in pregnancy. They do not breathe well and sit a lot each day. The majority of women are afraid of birth on some level. Pregnancy Yoga can support all of this! It’s a tonic for the modern world and the modern woman and my classes are a sanctuary for pregnancy!”

SPRING SUMMER Fashion Trends 2017

B

old is better this season as explosions of colour, florals filled the runway and spilled out onto the rails of the high street. Here’s an insight into what’s hot and on trend when preparing your spring / summer wardrobe.

STATEMENT SHIRTS. Wave goodbye to the days of stealing your partner’s white dress shirt to complete the oversized and effortless look. Shirting gets a revamp this season to include ruffle sleeves, deconstructing cuts and striped silhouettes. Spring / summer 2017 is all about bringing the drama, more is more as everything becomes oversized and over exaggerated. We’re talking extreme bell sleeves, romantic tiered ruffles and bold deconstructed cuts. Pair with a high waisted pencil skirt for the perfect power dressing work wardrobe, distressed jeans for laid back chic, or team with leather look trousers for a full blown glam vibe. Shirting in spring / summer 2017’s look-book masters the effortless day to night style. FLORALS. Are in full bloom this season. Whilst florals for spring may not come as quite a ground breaking fashion trend, this season, it has blossomed all over the racks of fashion houses. Pretty feminine chiffon blouses, statement brights and head to toe floral co-ords is the perfect way to add a pop of colour to any outfit. ATHLEISURE. Your shabby Nike pro gym leggings get an ultra-glam update this season. Its all about mastering luxe sports gear whilst having zero intention to actually venture anywhere near a gym. In fact, the only exercise undertaken is racing to the checkout to complete this look. If retro Adidas joggers are far too sporty to suit your style, look out for slim, tapered trousers with a stripped outer edge. Not only do the vertical lines elongate the leg area, they don’t look too casual when paired with a smarter tee, jumper or blazer.

I’ve got 99 problems and a kid’s birthday party is one! he logistics of planning your child’s dream birthday party sound oh so simple on the face of things. Once the entertainer is booked, the sandwiches carefully spread, and the party bags are packed to the brim, what else is there to worry about, right? Try the social etiquette disguised through sending thankyou cards, who to include on the invitation list & how to distribute the invitations, (we need to be sensitive towards the uninvited) and of course, the one we all dread the most - “no gifts please”, really!?

T

The guide to planning and attending a birthday party isn’t taught at your parenting classes & it’s not really, socially acceptable to discuss your concerns either – for hosting a birthday party should come easy, if you’re an organised, calm-under-pressure, hugely creative parent with more than one pair of arms. Not you? Well, if not, plan B is as follows: pretend to know what you’re doing, follow our advice & fluff your way through the entire party! Because, let’s face it – no one wants to be labelled a ‘bad parent’, BUT watch out, because morphing into Mumzilla isn’t a good look either…

Present giving WHERE. TO. START.

IF presents are wanted – how do we purchase the perfect present, that isn’t going to be duplicated, that isn’t costly, that doesn’t make us look tight? A present that reflects creativity, thought & effort – a personal gift that appeals to the child’s taste, Nerf guns & My Little Pony isn’t for everyone! Don’t just grab and go, get out your glue & shop for a picture frame, add a BFF photo and decorate - use scrabble pieces for text, glitter, stickers, add a number (for the child’s age) and wallah! You have a not-too-flashy, home-made present that is very considerate and kind on the pennies. HOWEVER if your child isn’t particularly close to the birthday kid, or you’re shopping for a boy, go for novelty presents! They’re timeless, hilarious at the time, and often it’s the presents that the child wouldn’t usually receive from their mother, that they love the most – cheap, comical & effective. HOT TIP: Keep a list of all presents received from other children. Not only will you know who to thank via thank you cards, but you can also avoid the awkwardness when it comes to re-gifting!
