In a DAZE DAZE over Open Days?

I

t’s the moment where us parents start to FREAK out – its Open Day season as Schools prepare to open their gates to the public. So let’s try to stay cool. What should we expect from an Open Day?

OPEN DAY ETIQUETTE

If you are busy researching Primaries then prepare to use a babysitting token, as most will request for children to stay at home. You will most likely be invited to visit during the working school day too but there are usually appointment options. The positive for going child-free is that you get to visit the environment without your Pre-Schooler hanging off your handbag, being socially belligerent and potentially weeing themselves in excitement at sight of the Home Corner. For most Secondary Schools, your child will be invited along with you to an Open ‘Evening’. Many Secondary Schools offer taster sessions across a number of subjects so your child can partake in activities. This is important for your children to feel a sense of involvement in the decision.

DON’T SWEAT

Your child’s schooling is certainly up there on the list of tough parenting decisions so if you are still feeling baffled, for more information on individual Schools, Ofsted Reports and Applications you can visit your Council’s School Admissions page.

www.liverpool.gov.uk, www.knowsley.gov.uk or www.sefton.gov.uk

WHAT DO WE NEED TO ASK?

We have put together a list of important things that you may want to research beforehand on the school’s website otherwise feel free to ask about them on the day – this could always be done anonymously via email: What are the school’s entry requirements? Do children need to sit an aptitude test or achieve certain SATS results? Do you live in the correct catchment area? Read the Ofsted Report on the School’s own or Council website – a great bed-time read and a big player in decision making. How do the Schools latest SATS or GCSE results compare to the National Average? The all important Curriculum - Consider whether your child is highly academic or creative and find out what subjects are on offer to your child. Does you child require Special Educational Needs (SEN)? If so what support is on offer? What is the School’s religious ethos? i.e. Catholic, Mixed Faith What is on offer to enhance your child’s education? i.e. Performing Arts, Music and Sport?

ARE THEY VISUAL, AUDITORY OR KINESTHETIC?

he Visual-AuditoryKinesthetic learning styles model provides a simple way to explain and understand our own learning style and that of our children. This learning system is usually abbreviated to VAK meaning…

T

VISUAL – learning through looking and watching AUDITORY – learning through listening KINESTHETIC – learning through physical activity We all use these three styles of learning to receive and learn new information. However, one or two of these styles is normally dominant in different people. The dominant style defines the best way for a person to learn. In recent

familygolive.com

years, teachers have benefited from using the VAK learning system. By presenting information using all three styles, teachers are allowing all children the opportunity to become involved and interested in the subject no matter what style they prefer to learn with. Once you are able to acknowledge your child’s preferred learning style, we should be able to support our child’s learning and/or revision methods in a more effective way. Here are a few ideas for you to use: THE VISUAL LEARNER: Visual learners need to see what they are learning and often learn through demonstration. Your visual learning child will process information well by creating diagrams, graphic organisers and doing mind-mapping tasks, which will help them to recognise patterns and relationships between ideas and concepts.

THE AUDITORY LEARNER: Auditory learners are often focused and good at listening. They will benefit from discussion about topics they are learning and will revise well by listening to recorded audio or video tapes and reading material aloud. THE KINESTHETIC LEARNER: Kinesthetic learners benefit from ideas being laid out in the real world. So if your child is learning about a step-bystep process, write each step out on a piece of paper and then place the pieces of paper in order on the floor. Your child can then physically walk through the process to learn. Your child will also benefit from role-play, experiments and field trips and you may find they require more frequent breaks to allow information to digest.

B R I D G E THE

GAP

re you petrified of mentioning that ‘gap’? Yes we’re talking about that ‘career gap’ you took to have babies and raise a family - Gasp! Or have we just reminded you that you’ve been living and breathing the gap for years and the kids are finally settled in school fulltime – Congratulations you made it!

A

So forget the boring mummy chores – you are free again, ambitious and career hungry (or at least for those school hours anyway). So how do you go about selling yourself back into your profession or even chasing a new career? It’s a daunting prospect for all mothers, as today many women have to rethink their work to fit around family life. It all starts with a little cv overhaul but does the term ‘Full-time Mum for 4 years’ translate well to future employers? Hmm maybe not. Certainly not when you’re competing with the likes of men whose cv’s tend to take a general hike in progress in comparison to many women’s cv’s that take vague, questionable diversions. But should these diversions really be seen as a bad thing?

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS?

Let’s be honest. You have been VERY busy developing your skills. Being a fulltime Mum is the hardest job in the world so let’s begin by brainstorming your parenting skills and translating them into career gold. Talking to strangers about your kids = Communication Planning a Birthday Party = Event Management Sharing struggles with other Mums = Networking

By reflecting on your daily tasks in this way, you are sure to create an endless list of relevant skills and strengths that can help give you the confidence boost you need to enhance your future career. Most importantly, use your newly refined skills as a positive to jump back into the world of work. You may consider doing a short course to support your time away from work. Get involved in some voluntary charity work or even PTA or community events, as these all require essential management skills.

No matter what, an employer will want to know about your career ‘break’ but remember your time building a family has been a positive life-changing experience. Use your intelligence to justify how being a mother has made you a stronger, more patient and self-motivated employee. Oh and let’s not forget that you are have recently become an outstanding multi-tasker, negotiator and fast promoted household manager. Get ready to take on the world!

THE IT CLUB I

f you are facing the start of a new term and your little one is eager to start a new hobby, here’s some helpful advice on what to consider when choosing the right club or class for your child.

THE MUM CLUB

Is signing your child up to a club your way of offering them extra social time with or away from school friends? Or are you purely looking to develop your child’s talent? Either way, the tried and tested way to research the options is to speak to the rest of us. Yes you guessed it…Mum’s know best! So, either ask other parents or read on, we have got this covered!

TIME & VENUE

This is essential for any organized parent. How quickly can you speed-snack and change your 6 year old out of a school uniform into a leotard before 4pm? Also consider traffic issues during rush hour. There is nothing worse than being that stressed out toddler-juggling Mother ushering a slightly apprehensive child into a room full of strangers – forget the comfort of the playground you know and hate, this place could be full of the city’s pushiest parents.

WEEKLY V WEEKENDS

Last minute weekend breaks can become a thing of the past and so will that hangover from the night before! Missing classes due to a busy social life may lead to your child loosing interest and confidence in their new found skill. However, many parents love the idea of a Saturday kids club for motivation to get up and out early with a breakfast treat on the go and can allow time for a productive day of weekend chores and social shindigs.

COST

Forget nappies and baby milk, joining a Kids Club is when it suddenly dawns on us how expensive children can be so before choosing a class make sure you enquire about how much you are expected to pay up front. Some companies charge registration fees, others may charge a monthly or termly fee so this can make a big difference. Ask about clothing, tournaments or exams, as these are almost always additional costs. We also know how flaky our kids can be so we would recommend finding a club that can offer your child a free trial for the first week to ensure they settle before you blow your designer handbag fund.

WIN! A 10 WEEK WIN COURSE WITH WATER BABIES Win a 10 week course of swimming with Water Babies Liverpool, winners of Family Go Live Best Baby & Toddler Class in 2012, 2013 & 2014. Since it was founded in 2002, Water Babies has grown into the world’s largest baby swim school, today teaching more than 41,000 babies.

The lessons develop water safety and confidence. Although the primary aim is having fun – so Water Babies rarely feel like they are in a lesson. However because the course is highly structured, most will happily be swimming distances underwater by about 30 months, then naturally

start swimming on the surface as their strength increases. If you and your baby would like to become water babies, you’re in luck, as we have one 10-week course worth £150 to give away.

Parent Review

Tread Family Go Live asked Max’s

Mum to review the services offered by Tread - here’s what she had to say! As a Mum of a ten year old boy who had exhausted all of his Junior school activities and discovered his passion for drama, I was desperate to find a drama class that would test Max’s new found talent and help him progress. Finding a drama club that wasn’t predominantly dance based and overflowing with girls was tough so I trawled the internet to research what was out there. That’s when I found Tread. I was immediately engaged by their professional website and the faces of Graham and Helen who are recognized professional actors with West End and Television credits. When I read that the classes took place at the beautiful Epstein Theatre I was sold. Max attended his first session and was a little apprehensive when I dropped him off. He immediately calmed when he was welcomed by Tread’s Director, Graham and the friendly faces of the mixed age students. There were a good number of boys too so I could tell Max felt comfortable to join in. After the session, I met an excited, smiling and very sweaty Max! He looked like he had worked extremely hard. I couldn’t believe how happy he seemed and he told me he had got to perform on the actual Epstein stage. We had trials booked at two other drama clubs that same day but Max had already made up his mind and couldn’t wait for his next Tread session.

Max has been with Tread for almost a year now and he loves it so much that he refers to the team as his Tread family! Like most Mum’s I felt it was important he made friends outside of school and the Tread team have been perfect for that. On top of that he has developed another talent in the form of musical theatre dance and progressed with his singing too. Graham’s approach as a West End leading actor has really helped Max’s focus on practicing hard even as an ensemble member to achieve a high-quality end production. I can see how Tread has impacted on Max’s commitment to a team. He has made it very clear to me that he will

not miss a Tread session! He has made solid friendships and aspires to be like the older experienced students yet enjoys being the aspiration himself to the young ones. The expectation is high at Tread though it remains fun, which is exactly what I was looking for. The great thing about Tread is any child of any ability can join and students are guaranteed a high-quality training at a very affordable price. I can’t wait to witness Max’s future progress as a performer as he continues his exciting journey with Tread.

Restaurant Review

Bella Italia On a gloriously hot summers day, there was no better way to spend the evening dining by the waterfront at Bella Italia’s New Brighton restaurant. Bursting with colour, flavour and atmosphere, the evening did not disappoint to two Bella Italia amateurs. Upon arriving at the restaurant, right on the front of New Brighton’s Pier, we were warmly greeted and shown to our table. The table was situated towards the back of the restaurant surrounded by high glass windows, streaming with light and boasting stunning views of the water. Inside, a retro vibe is mastered through the combination of an impressive, trendy bar with explosions of colour. The ambiance created is one of homely goodness with a pop of vibrancy. Waiters were fabulous in accommodating us and recommending dishes and were always on hand to help. Something particularly impressive from the menu was the level of thought that had gone into creating the dishes to cater for all needs, providing a key on the first page which indicated dishes suitable for vegetarians, dishes for the calorie conscious and dishes made without gluten. First, I ordered a cocktail from the vast selection on the menu. What was great about the menu was the combination of popular classics with the house favourites, as well as the signature mocktails perfect for those driving or for children. My drink of choice was the strawberry Tesoro cocktail, fruity, bubbly and refreshing, perfect for the summers evening and after work treat! To follow, we ordered the mozzarella garlic bread and Funghi Arrosto (baked mushrooms).

The portions were generous and extremely filling, a perfect starter. For our mains we decided to play it safe and go for the classic Italian dishes- pizza margarita and lasagna. The food was incredibly authentic, piping hot and freshly produced, we were even asked by the waiter whilst eating our starters when we would like our mains to start being prepared!

Next came dessert, as a chocolate lover, this menu was an absolute dream! There was a mass of options to indulge in from the menu, from the mountain high ‘godfather’ sundaes to mini shot glass strawberry shortcakes, the dessert menu caters for those looking for that small after meal sweet craving to a full blown sugar explosion! Spoilt for choice, I had no other option but to ask the waiter which one he would recommend, to which he did not disappoint with the chocolate cookie dough lava cake. Melting in your mouth from the first bite, this warm gigantic

chocolate chip cookie was my idea of heaven! Ideal for any occasion, whether a drink with the girls outside in the sunshine, a romantic dinner sharing the huge Pizza Roma, or taking the whole family out for a bite to eat with the array of offers and vouchers which can be found on the website, Bella Italia has you covered!

IN Food heaven SEFTON t seems like only yesterday that we were enjoying the balmy weather, as a family, joining thousands of other food lovers, as they headed to the city’s Sefton Park for the annual Liverpool Food and Drink Festival.

I

How quickly a year passes and this year’s event is only a matter of weeks away, being held over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September. It’s amazing to see the park transformed into a foodie paradise. From the moment you arrive it’s hard not to be impressed by the scale of the event, and I’m reliably informed that over 45,000 visitors attended last year! This year’s event (it’s now in its ninth year) has undergone a bit of a makeover, with a brand new format. The site’s now being divided into defined zones, and the organisers have grouped together producers, brands and food genres that complement each other, like beer and bangers (the other half’s go to of choice), coffee and chocolate and street food and craft ales. There’s a fantastic marketplace, where you can stock up on unusual ingredients along with kitchen gadgets, plus loads of artisan food choices. Last year we had the foresight to take a bag along with us, which came in really handy in the market, where we bought fresh pies, sausage rolls and loads of other stuff, creating an impromptu picnic on the grass. New for 2016 is the Good Life area, which focuses on all things natural, as well as ‘free-from’ and health industry innovations. The Healthy Living stage will include demos and Q&As hosted by chefs, focusing on the art of eating clean and living a balanced lifestyle, including Madeleine Shaw, celebrity nutritional health coach and best selling cookery writer. The festival has a reputation for attracting big headline names and this year is no exception. On festival Saturday Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain will be sharing her cookery tips and give advice (Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood

ay 18th Join Nadi ya Huss ain on Sund

has also guested in previous years.) whilst on the Sunday, the ever popular Gino D’Acampo will be cooking for visitors and being interviewed about his food and television careers. The festival is also famous for the number of bars and restaurants it features and it’s one of the only large scale food events in the country that include participants from the city itself. The show guide reads like a who’s who of Liverpool eateries, including favourites like Almost Famous (can I get enough of those burgers), Chicha, and Tavern Co, along with newcomers to the scene like The Chancery which opens in October (one to watch for sure.) Cooking up a storm with a whole variety of sights, sounds and mouth-watering aromas, they’ll all be showcasing their menus as well as signature dishes. Having a whole city park at your disposal means there’s no shortage of space, and a lot of visitors head to the music tent,

Ramen alongside modern sushi options like Dragon and Volcano Rolls, plus Tempura and even Oysters. The kids really love sushi and it’s certainly one place I’ll be heading. Speaking of the little ones, I’ve often worried that taking them to all-day big events could be a recipe for disaster, however the organisers have thought of every eventuality with loads of food options that they won’t turn their nose up at, along with one of those dedicated zones I mentioned earlier The Kids Village. Designed for younger festival-goers, The Kids Village has a load of activities to keep them entertained, from arts and crafts to food-based fun. Water babies, the junior swimming teachers will be making biscuits that can be decorated, whilst Ginger Island turn their attention to decorating faces, making up youngsters as dogs, kittens, frogs and much more. The kids cookery classes run by Family go Live Magazine are also expected to be a sure fire hit, where they can learn the basics about nutrition and ingredients and even eat what they’ve created!

Similary popular are the pop-ups, full size restaurants, compete with furniture, waiters and more! This year’s pop up is by Izakaya, who’ll be bringing a taste of Japan to Sefton Park with their Sushi restaurant. The menus is truly mouthwatering and features classic dishes such as Katsu Chicken and Noodle

Top tip here - it’ll pay to familiarise yourself with where the Kids Village is located, as the Prosecco Bar is a stones’ throw away, and there’s nothing nicer on a Summer’s day than a cheeky fizz or two - especially with eye candy like Gino at hand - fantastico! Finally, a food and drink festival wouldn’t be a food and drink festival without a glass or two of something strong and there’s whole area dedicated to Spirits, which includes a gin journey - brand new for this year. The gin journey features a number of producers who will be giving talks about their brands, sharing secrets on how they make them, the botanicals used to flavour them and of course giving away plenty of samples over the course of the weekend. My idea of heaven!

Maternity Chic

one are the days when pregnancy and fashion never mixed. Maternity wear used to involve a completely new wardrobe full of clothes that we had to buy and force ourselves to wear to accommodate our increasing waistlines. However, fashion designers are finally embracing the idea of dressing the bump and those extra curves as stylishly as we did prepregnancy so ditch the over-sized dresses and sweat pants…let’s talk skinny, tighter, bump hugging fashion.

G

Women are curvy and pregnancy accentuates those curves including the S-shape of the back. So for the first time in your life, celebrate your developing body and take pride in flaunting pregnancy. After all both men and women are now openly declaring that they find pregnant women sexy.

OLIVIA STYLED

Hollywood film actress, Olivia Wilde has recently admitted to avoiding wearing clothes that conceal her

familygolive.com

burgeoning bump. The 32 year old who is expecting her second child says, “For pregnancy I don’t wear empire waists. I don’t think it’s flattering Pregnant women can still be sexy, there is no need to disguise yourself in lots of layers”. Olivia has chosen to wear both long and short figure hugging gowns on the red carpet. Her choice proves pregnant women can ooze style and class as her bump accentuates the sculptured look. But let’s be honest Liv, this is not your everyday practical look. The ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ star has also inspired us with her practical yet stylish daywear look. This can be achieved by us all even pre and postnatal with a simple pair of leggings or maternity skinny jeans twinned with a slightly loose or even fitted t-shirt or vest. Accessorise with a boho scarf or a bang on trend biker style jacket. Furthermore an outfit like this can be dressed up or down with your choice of shoe – hit urban chic with a converse style trainer or take charge with a low-heeled Chelsea boot. For more inspiration check out high street maternity stores and prepare to enjoy a whole new world of fashion.

NEW STORE ALERT

Children’s and maternity retailer Mamas and Papas launched its new concept ‘boutique’ store on the Speke Retail Park this summer. Executive Chairman Derek Lovelock said that over £3m was set aside for new stores that will open during the next year including Liverpool’s very own in Speke. The new store is one of it’s first in the company’s attempt at becoming “the world’s favourite nursery brand”. Designed by creative firm Dalziel and Pow, the entrance has a fashion boutique and product bundles names ‘bundles of joy’ which are placed in front of a moving wall projection of clouds and animals which introduces technology into the space. Mamas & Papas aims to run personalisation throughout the store to offer the best shopping experience for its target shoppers including expert advice and opportunity to create product wish lists. To further it’s offering Mamas & Papas the retailer will also be launching a loyalty programme this year.

Escape to Winter estive season preparations are looming and it’s that time of year that many of us parents dive for cover and start researching winter sun getaways. But with some help from The Little Travel Lounge maybe a Winter Wonderland break is just what you need to restore your family Christmas spirit or fall in love all over again in one of Europe’s most magical locations.

F

1. LAPLAND

High above the Arctic Circle with snowclad pine trees, grazing reindeer and cosy log cabins where flickering log fires ensure the warmest of welcomes. Let the dream come true with a family trip to meet Father Christmas in Lapland. Pack this exciting and enchanting excursion into a once in a lifetime day trip - flying early from Manchester airport and arriving before lunchtime. You and your family will begin the ‘Search for

1

Santa’ as you start your journey by Snowmobile into the snowy wilderness before ascending onto sledges pulled by teams of Huskies only inches from the snowy ground. Once deep into the forest, prepare for your final flight as you join the Reindeer sleigh and ride on to finally find Father Christmas and his Elves waiting for your family in the main man’s Grotto. Children of any age will never forget this enchanting experience and will be delighted with their complimentary present as they wave him a fond farewell. All family members will be provided with thermal suits and boots for the duration of the trip and a two-course lunch is served during the day. All Lapland trips have a range of itineraries and packages and are available for you to stay in the choice of Hotels and traditional Cabins for up to 4 nights. Tour operators offer additional activities for the longer stays including extra tobogganing and snowman building and all activities can be lengthened depending on the duration of your stay.

2 2. YLLAS LUXURY CABINS, FINNISH LAPLAND

Catering well for families who wish for overnight accommodation, the Yllas luxury cabins are traditionally built from logwood and equipped with fully modernized interiors including a kitchen, sauna and contemporary fireplaces. All cabins are catered for with meals being prepared in the cabins by the catering company from a continental breakfast to a full three course meal. Toboggans are also available on request to use in your free time.

Wonderland 3

3. NORTHERN LIGHTS

Life is here to be lived and if you and your partner are keen for a romantic geta-way, why not make it extra special by sharing in one of our planet’s greatest experiences and witness the spectacular Northern Lights together - a celestial ballet of astonishing coloured light dancing across the night sky, a spectacle that will take your breath away. Travel by Reindeer through the snow-filled Arctic Tundra to reach the viewing point of the lights. Accommodation options include lodges or hotels or really push the boat out and stay in an igloo or the famous Ice Hotel. During your stay, you and your partner can opt to take a Snowmobile Safari or ‘mush’ your own Huskies and hold on tight as you ride across frozen lakes and through silent forests in search of the beautiful Northern Lights. For the ultimate romantic experience, take a nighttime snowmobile ride to your own private Kota (Sami Tent) where the champagne is on ice and the chocolate fondue is ready to devour. REVIEW

Written by Shelda-Jane Smith, PhD researcher, mum of one.

Kerry’s Fitness Studio: t was late March this year when I contacted Kerry Russell, owner of Kerry’s Fitness Studio on Woolton Road, to book a series of 10 group training sessions. I had followed the studio on Instagram and was drawn to the creative approach of the trainers that worked there. Posting things such as motivation quotes, daily home workouts and video clips of themselves and their clients as they trained showed their commitment to a health and fitness lifestyle. From their Instagram pages I was able to see a dedicated team who showed off what they were capable of.

I

And rightly so, Kerry alone has experience in this field that spans 28 years as well as stretching across two continents. Her professional career began in Los Angeles, so what better than a trainer straight from Muscle Beach. My initial plan was to lose a few pounds, drop a couple of inches and to shift that perennial baby weight that clung around my middle. However, only eight weeks into training with Kerry I had already reached my goal weight. So why, seven months on, do I still turn up to this gym three times a week? The air of cliché about my answer is unavoidable but it’s simply because my body transformation has now become a lifestyle. I find being around others who also enjoy training to be motivating. Rather than joining one of the larger, chain-type gyms and getting lost amongst the rows of treadmills, spin machines and other fitness equipment I never really got the hang of, the more personal and intimate approach of Kerry’s Fitness Studio allowed me to set attainable and realistic goals from which I quickly started to see results. As is common amongst gym newcomers, my initial motivator for joining was due to a holiday and wedding looming in the distance. However Kerry has taken me beyond that short-term mentality and introduced me to a way of life wherein I now take seriously the food I eat, the training I do and the respect I treat my body with.

The B i g g e s t Loser Challenge They say summer bodies are made in the winter and what better way to turn that into a reality than by taking part in one of the two body transformation events at Kerry’s Fitness Studio. These Biggest Loser style challenges will consist of completing one of the four different training and meal plans on offer. And what’s great is you get to choose which plan suits you best. For example Plan One includes two training sessions with Kerry in addition to a weekly fitness class, whilst Plans Two, Three and Four include the addition of juices and meals. At the end of each week there will be a weigh-in and body fat monitoring to track your progress. There are only two rules for taking part:

1) YOU NEED TO TAKE A ‘BEFORE’ PICTURE OF YOURSELF AND, The person with the biggest transformation at the end of the five weeks will be declared the winner and will receive one month’s worth of free training along with a celebration dinner and some well-deserved bubbly. The first challenge will begin Monday 5th September lasting until Friday 7th October and the second one will begin Monday 7th November until Friday 9th December. Something definitely worth taking on before the mayhem of Christmas begins.

Low-down High Brow? Semi-permanent V Microblading

F

orget the scouse brow, we’re talking highbrow; the Hollywood perfect eyebrows without any need for makeup. Just think how much time you could save each morning by waking up brow-perfect. Sold?

Well before you shout ‘Hell yeah get me some of that for Christmas NOW baby’, let’s take a look at the difference between two of the sought after celebrity must-have brow treatments.

SEMI-PERMANENT EYE-BROWS

When we think of permanent makeup we often think of harsh tattooed lines that remain on the skin and look misplaced as the skin ages. However modern techniques can create a look far from this unflattering image. For natural looking brows, soft thin hair lines can be achieved using multiple colours to create a full looking brow. This technique can enhance the natural shape of the brow and add length where the tails of the brow are missing. An airbrush type gun is used to add the pigments to the top layer of the skin and for the first couple of days the pigment may appear darker than it will eventually look. A retouch might be scheduled for a few weeks time to achieve a perfect result. Prices start at around £199 for this treatment.

MICROBLADING

Microblading otherwise known as ‘brow embroidery’ creates an extra soft and natural look. It is not designed to create perfect symmetry but to enhance facial characteristics that are already present by following the natural eyebrow contour. This is achieved by the therapist using a hand held micro-fine blade to manually deposit colour closer to the surface of the skin unlike semi-permanent make-up that is done with a machine. This method allows the therapist to create bespoke, crisp hair strokes that look like natural eyebrow hair. The treatment can take up to two hours to complete but the results of Microblading can last up to three years and this can be followed up with a colour boost treatment. Initial treatment prices start at around £250 including your initial consultation.

Halloween Ke en…

alloween is looming and as this growing American trend is set to get bigger by the year, gone are the days we could throw an old witches hat on the kids and wrap them in an old curtain. Now it’s about prepping well in advance, pre-booking tickets for events and organising costumes fabulous enough to rival any Beyoncé gig.

H

The cities entertainment providers are getting set for one of their busiest events of the year so say a big hallo to Halloween as we give you some of our recommendations for a spook-tacular experience.

KIDDY-VILLE

Keep the little ones active and in the spooky spirit by looking at some of the exciting party events the city has on offer. Most playcentres have a Halloween themed weekend with character parties and discos as well as local farms and country parks preparing for pumpkin festivities and thrilling experiences for all the family. Check out local libraries and the city museums that will often provide special Halloween themed crafting activities for children at no extra cost.

TEENAGE TRICKS

Are you the one with the grumpy teen who is soooo over the humiliation of begging for sweets on the neighbour’s doorstep? After all since when did your teen even say so much as hello to Geoff next door in the last 3 years?? Why not try and keep them involved by encouraging that pre-winter clear out and allowing them to slash old clothes and customize old outfits to wear for the occasion. Expect a tonne of makeup and fake tattoos in addition so prepare to embrace your inner Goth. It’s all about freaky fashion these days and your teens will fight to look the most gruesomely glamorous this Halloween. Cute little pumpkins and fluffy black cats are a thing of the past, get ready for Tween Queen of

Hearts, Dead-Eye Dolly or a mysterious Teenwolf. Liverpool has some of the most extravagant costume hire shops in the country so if you have the budget you will need to book your teen’s attire quick-smart to avoid disappointment and an award-winning teenage strop. For an evening of spine tingling thrills, check out Stage Door Events Production at the grand and spooky Residence of the Haunted Croxteth Hall. With non-stop entertainment for the kids to enjoy, disco, competitions and games including the Best Halloween Costume Competition the kids are guaranteed a frightfully fun evening!

5 Simple Tips for the Perfect Birthday Bash!

Y

ou’ve either heard it too many times already or you are living in fear of hearing the words ‘Mummy I want the whole class to come to my party’ (Cue: Panic, sweat and uncontrollable hysteria)

Ok we are all Super-parents but thirty kids, running around shoveling sweets for two hours under your supervision is your frank idea of hell. Don’t fret - the team is here to help with their top tips for the perfect party leaving your kids, their friends and even you begging for more…

1. GET ORGANISED: Never, repeat NEVER leave the party planning until the last minute. No matter what, organising a party is stressful for the most chilled out of parents so allow yourself to relax on the day and enjoy it rather than running round like a headless chicken squawking at the kids (and the hubby) to sit down and sing the birthday song 2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT VENUE: Consider a space big enough to cater for the numbers. Large numbers of kids need space to run around or break off to an outside space otherwise you will have caged animals on a day trip out the zoo. Playcentres are ideal for this as the kids can burn off steam for the first hour of the party before calmly sitting for the party food and games.

3. CHOOSE A THEME: All kids love a themed party;

it may involve fancy dress or simply tailoring your cakes, decorations and party bags to suit. If you do choose a theme, try and make it original but remember little kids like familiarity so keep the party games to those old favourites but maybe with a themed prize. Older kids always like a new challenge so research online for new and exciting party games if you dare to lead these yourself or dole out this job to Dad equipped with themed costume?? (just an idea)

prepared for a Birthday kid meltdown, we’ve all witnessed that overwhelmed emotional child that wants to sit on their parent’s lap rather than joining in so don’t be too heavily swamped in the party planning that the party falls apart without you. If you decide not to book an Organiser or Entertainer, call in your back up troops i.e. family and friends (and always provide them with wine after its all over).

5. HAVE A PARTY ITINERARY: Whatever you

decide to do, having a party itinerary is vital for all Party connoisseurs especially if you are hosting a party in your own home. You will also find a Party Entertainment company will provide you with their own itinerary for you to tailor your party around. At home, schedule timings for your activities, party games, food and birthday cake. It helps to set up areas or zones in your house where the different activities take place i.e. dance floor, food zone, pin the tail on the mermaid corner, craft corner etc. This way you gain control in your home and the busy schedule will prevent children from becoming bored and rebellious (avoid little Jonny sneaking off into your underwear closet at all costs). An itinerary also helps to clearly state party-bag and home time – cheers all round aaaand relax.

4. BOOK A PARTY ORGANISER OR ENTERTAINER: This takes major pressure off us

parents so we can enjoy watching our children revel in their birthday celebration. The Organiser/Entertainer offers the kids a focus and all are experienced in keeping children engaged and active for the duration. Top Tip: Be

Party Testimonial

ALEXANDRA’S CASTLES Gillian Parry, Mum of 8 year old Macy, tells us all about her experience of Alexandra’s Castles who she hired last minute for her daughter’s birthday party. Lights, camera, party! This year we threw our daughter Macy the party of the year by hiring the disco dome from Alexandra castles. Guaranteed fun, endless dancing and great music, the disco dome was undoubtedly the best party experience we have had! We decided to host Macy’s 8th birthday party at home praying that the weather was on our side! Macy was desperate for a bouncy castle garden party so it only took a few easy steps to book one online. To our horror, when the big day arrived, there was no bouncy castle in sight, what’s a bouncy castle garden party without the bouncy castle?! We couldn’t believe it on the day when the company we had booked didn’t turn up. With the clock ticking and the countdown until the party on, I had two hours to find a miracle bouncy castle and quickly got online searching for other local companies. That’s when fate brought me to Alexandra’s Castles. From the moment they answered the phone, I knew they were going to save the day. Bigger, better and brighter than the one we had originally booked, the disco dome was a party spectacular! Dancing

under the stars, singing until their hearts content and bouncing along with the disco lights, the dome was the ultimate way to throw a party, taking a bouncy caste to the next level! We can’t thank Alexandra’s Castles enough for their help and brilliant service! It is safe to say that they made Macy’s day the best birthday yet and could not recommend them enough! For all your disco and bouncing fun, there is only one place to go!
