If you’re having doubts, check some other schools out

or many parents particularly those with more than one child - selecting a primary or secondary school on their behalf, is a no brainer. It’s either the one that their brother or sister attends, a school that Mum herself went to ‘back in the day’, or it’s the nearest one. And that’s fine, as they probably are, credible, Ofstedapproved schools - however, do they cater for your child’s individual needs?

F

Just because it works for one of your children, doesn’t mean it’s right for the other. Many schools specialise in specific subjects, of which influence compulsory modules. Consequently, your child will be forced to take subjects for GCSE, that may not comply with your child’s learning ability. And with various schools pushing out different academic techniques to benefit specific types of learner, it is vital that you do your research beforehand & visit in advance. So, what if your child has already moved school & you’re having doubts? Don’t panic. In-year transfers are straightforward, easy to undertake (you simply contact the existing school to instigate) & can be dealt with in as little as 20

familygolive.com

days. Additionally, the process can take place throughout your child’s education at any point, so do not feel obliged to stay put, for sake of ease. Undoubtedly, some moving periods are stickier than others. Yet, if you are contemplating relocating your child during year 9, don’t disregard your gut-feeling because it’s ‘unfavourable’. You may have to make a detour on the school run, your child will have to reselect options & wave goodbye to a few pieces of completed coursework, but aren’t these mere, minor setbacks, in relation to the bigger picture? Ensure that your child reaches their maximum potential & attains grades that they are capable of achieving, relative towards their career. As if your child marginally scrapes through, it won’t just be their grades that suffer, but their confidence & attitude towards further education too. Moving can be an overwhelming situation, but if school is becoming a discouraging, negative workplace, then a clean slate

is in order. As a parent, try to avoid offloading your feelings of stress onto your child & shift feelings of anxiety into exciting prospects - tempt with new ‘school equipment’ (trainers, a bag, a new coat) & use the incentive of inviting their new friends over for tea & sleepovers! Open days are predominantly throughout September, however individual schools advertise throughout the year, thus there is always a taster day to pencil into your calendar. Visiting in advance is always recommended, as it gives you a flavour of the school’s ethos & helps to eliminate any apprehension or teething issues that your child may be facing. So, if you are concerned about your child’s education, be brave & proactive. Research plenty of schools to see what is on offer & assess how their way, can elevate your child’s potential. There really is nothing to lose, simply turn up, without having to pre-book, & discover what else there is out there - you could, change your child’s future.

Appsoloutely fantastic resources for parents! eing a parent can be challenging from time to time, especially when you come across synonyms, microorganisms & fraction conversion? The what-now? If the above isn’t ringing a bell & why would it? Don’t panic. It’s not every day you’re acquainted with bewildering linguistic terms, strange-sounding living fungi & complex, formulaic, mathematical conundrums. In fact, for the majority of parents, you haven’t in forever - at least that’s how long it feels!

B

It is important that as a parent, you are aware of your child’s ability, to ensure that they’re on track, & hitting their target level. So, if your child’s arduous slogging, has become the ‘norm’ & you’re unsure on your next move (how can you help with decimal points, you’re not a maths teacher?) – we’ve got the solution: use online resources! Apps are hugely beneficial in providing children with educational content, as heaps of academic material is disguised through fun, engaging games and played via their favourite devices. From learning mandarin, to coding robot wars, there is a huge variety for parent & child to trial together. Now if you’re looking for something less playful, BBC Bitesize is your saviour. A reliable, straight-forward, online programme, that is free & covers the entire curriculum. Additionally, there’s YouTube, everyone’s go-to platform for trailers, hilarious footage, & music videos – well, it’s also a fantastic, educational tool especially for the visual learners exhibiting footage of lessons from teachers (that you & your child can watch), recordings of written work examples, & compilations of animated, academic tutorial. And finally, there’s Click Thru Maths; a rewarding, stimulating CD Rom that holds 33 interactive lessons for Year 6 pupils. Packed with resources, the software effectively prepares children for SATS examinations using a parent-&-child approach, and even comes with whiteboards & materials to further echo the dynamics of a lesson. So, if your child is struggling with their homework, the resources are all but just a click away. Stop tweeting & start depleting!

Build a virtuoso & banish poor grades

any parents are unfamiliar with the advantages of actively influencing music into their child’s agenda; overly concerned with reinforcing field sports & backflips & not particularly forthcoming in recognising creative potential. By result, Mum and Dad are seriously missing out on instilling numerous brain-boosting qualities and channelling a more positive, uplifted, budding Beethoven.

M

The popularity of Learning an instrument (particularly the more traditional, kind) has drastically declined – the recorder, sadly, a longlost past-time. And despite the old, woodwind favourite not being the most elevating in terms of musical growth, students still, remained musicallyengaged – now, not so much. Dispel myths that music is a ‘gift’ pre-installed and ignore trivial factors, such as the lack-of-musical-presence in the family already. Clear your mindset from doubts & avoid cynical waves infused by unrealistic ideals set by the greats. Your child may not become a pianist sensation overnight, but that’s beside the point. Research exhibits that possessing rewarding life-skills (that are developed through

familygolive.com

playing an instrument) makes way for a bright, successful future ahead. And so, witness your child’s unmissable emotional growth, as they embark on a journey of huge personal development, whilst gaining transferable life experience & bundles of self-esteem, along the way.

put in. Preparation & motivation act as the catalyst in the transformation of your child’s confidence - which grows even further, through live performances (contributing to public speaking), group rehearsals (working within a team) and perseverance through moments of tiredness and difficulty.

EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT / MOTOR SKILLS Going to school & ‘being a teenager’ is sometimes tiresome & stressful & if negative feelings & emotions aren’t exercised, than children may decline in certain areas or act irrationally. Playing an instrument enables children to channel exam-pressure & anxiety. Through pursuing creativity, children are able to unwind, healthily & safely whilst releasing tension & finding a new focus, that distracts from unproductive activity. Additionally, newfound motor skills will aid in improving general alertness & memory, making each day more enjoyable.

ACADEMIC Giving your child a structure, initiates a regime, of which implements a healthy work-play balance, improving everyday quality of life. And in relation to education, the perks are tremendous. Learning about beats, rhythms & scales, enhances the same part of the brain that multiplies, divides & solves equations. Simultaneously, plucking instrumental strings, teaches children basic physics as they manipulate with various aspects of sound & vibration.

PERSONAL / SOCIAL / CONFIDENCE Give your child the opportunity to expand their identity, as they explore original ideas, research music & selfcritique their own ability. By offering a child a tool to learn, this effectively opens the path to self-study, that exercises imaginative skills, pushes work-ethic & implements a desire to do well - due to the work that they have

With growing evidence conveying resounding educational results in musicians, (in comparison to nonemusicians) & the emotional gains from endorsing in music (it’s so good that they’re using it in therapy sessions to improve cognitive skills) - the power of the melody is none-disputable! Consider a little classical projection or acoustic execution for your child, and provide them with not just a new skill, but with a method of expression.

The social

team sports for kids...

benefits of

any of us are aware of the multitude of physical and psychological advantages that are often associated with team sports. Yet, are you familiar with the numerous social benefits that collective physical activity can influence, to effectively put your little one on track from an early age? With the millennials constantly engaging in distracting, anxiety-inflicting technology, preferring to retreat to their bedrooms as opposed to a family trip out to the park – now so more than ever, it is vital that communication & soft skills are being put in check.

M

And team sports aren’t just fantastic for the boys too. With many parents pushing their daughters to engage in what once were regarded as ‘typically’ male-dominated sports such as football, rugby, hockey – female children are too reaping the social rewards. See how getting your girl or boy into a group-sport from a young age, helps to positively direct their focus, influencing them to steer clear from potential rebellious behaviour whilst enhancing emotional intelligence. Playing within a team, ensures consistent involvement, of which has its many advantages. In terms of social pros, attending a game becomes compulsory, as your child becomes aware of the damaging consequences that could inflict upon the group. This exerts a reliable, noneselfish ‘team player’ who supports their team-members, enforcing comradery & a newfound consideration for others. Additionally, your child will be exposed to various individuals from regular team classes & through competitions, taking place in diverse locations. And communicating with an abundance of individuals, teaches your child how to adapt themselves in order to build relationships with people in the future – a key life skill. Exerting the ability to work within a team, is also fundamental to your child’s growth, as they practise bonding together to flourish collectively.

Being taught by coaches & older, likeable, role models is also a major contributing factor to moulding your child socially. Having a relatable superior to keep your child in check, effectively enables them to learn how to adhere to authority, as they emit respect through an aspiring figure. This steers your child away from introvert behaviour, subconsciously enforcing them to seek-out likewise figures for help in the foreseeable. Furthermore, it triggers children to behave patiently & control their temperament, as they follow instruction, deterring from a stroppy, argumentative individual, who acts appropriately when asked upon. This effectively influences your little one to develop a friendly, helpful attitude in situations where they are required to be approachable & offer support. Team spirit isn’t just applicable in team sports, it’s relevant to everyday life & thus crucial for your child to have some practise in. And what with social anxiety propping up more so now than ever, it has become essential for parents to step in & squash any feelings of discomfort in social situations, experienced by your child.

Parent Review

Performers Theatre School BY CLARE COMER Several years ago, I booked my son in for a free singing taster session at Performers Theatre School. Little did I know that a one hour lesson, could totally change our lives. By far, one of the best decisions I have ever made, Brian is now excelling in the performing arts field, taking up 14 taking classes in singing, drama, musical theatre and several styles of dance. I was the first to say that Brian wasn’t the greatest dancer - now I’m eating my words. With the support and dedication from the staff at the school, Brian has gone onto take ISTD dance exams in Tap and Modern and has gained fantastic results - he is also performing several dance routines at the end of year show - a huge achievement from where we first started. Brian’s successes wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the abundance of opportunity he received from Performers Theatre School. The school has given Brian a platform to perform in some of Liverpool’s biggest theatres, featuring in huge productions including, Bill Kenwright’s productions of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Evita”. With help from the dance and drama departments at Performers, Brian successfully auditioned for a lead role in a West End show and moved to London for 10 months in 2015 – what an opportunity. And to my relief, Brian was welcomed back with open arms upon his return. Initially, I had been worried that he’d find it difficult to settle back in, but due to the family ethos of the school, it was as if he’d never left.

Professional performing schools are sometimes difficult when it comes to making friends due to the competitive nature of the field. However, the relationships that Brian has made during his time at Performers are friendships for life. This is due to the unconditional support & willing each student gives to one another – zero negativity, just sheer comradery as everyone influences one another & works together as one big team. Performers is a place that allows children to become who they want to be, without being judged. It’s an environment where children can express themselves & develop freely - a place where parents can leave their child safely & in the knowledge that their child’s happiness is at the forefront of everything. My son loves to entertain more than anything, and Performers Theatre School have not only boosted his

confidence, but given him a plethora of life experience that will enable him to pursue performing arts as a career. He has learned discipline, how to work as part of a team, how to project his voice (which isn’t always a good thing!), and how to get changed in under 10 seconds – a feat that comes in handy, especially in the mornings when we’re rushing out for school! Brian says that “Performers is the best theatre school in Liverpool” and I wholeheartedly agree - it really is our second home.”

Restaurant Review

Bluecoat Bistro With three hundred years-worth of artistic history – pretty much every walking generation has popped into the Bluecoat on their Saturday moochabout-town at one point or another. Yet, how many of us regular visitors, can say that we have climbed the stairs leading to their low-key, twinkling contemporary bistro & sampled their exhilarating duck starter topped with apricot & pomegranate seeds & drizzled in balsamic? Surprisingly, not many. Familiar with their café (Espresso) residing in the main entrance, we suspect that light bites are all that is on offer for the foodies. This isn’t so. Behold, the Bluecoat Bistro; a picturesque eatery, delivering three sublime courses appealing entirely to the quintessential Bluecoat wanderer. To begin, me and my partner ordered differing starters. I opted for the slowcooked duck starter (as mentioned above – it’s so good, I can’t stop talking about it) & he, being a seafood connoisseur, went for the Calamari squid rings. Both, exceeded our (already high) expectations. The duck leg was on the mark: cooked exquisitely, it maintained it’s rich, juicy, sumptuous flavour that juxtaposed perfectly, with the piquant orange salad – a gorgeous, zingy contrast. Similarly, the deep-fried rings of Calamari, soaked in a complimenting lemon mayo & chorizo oil, delighted. Refraining from tasting rubbery, the crisp cluster, made for a light, tender taste, containing a surprisingly, subtle, sweet kick – sublime.

The delicious appetisers left us wanting more & we were not disappointed. After choosing a meat starter, I opted for the vegetarian Frittata as my main; a satisfying guilt-free meal, that was fluffy, light, & packed with delicious greens, healthy & tasty. The sophisticated, Supreme of Chicken dish with Parma ham followed & arrived beautifully. Served with soft, new potatoes, rich asparagus, oozing mozzarella & immersed in real, gravy. The chicken: lovely & lean, contrasted beautifully against the crispy smoked ham - a wholesome, homemade main, exuding creamy flavours & pure quality. To finish, we couldn’t decline a dessert, & greedily took on a sweet, raspberry trifle, to share. Dripping with luxury

crème, topped with coffee powder & layered with mango & custard, our dining experience, concluded most favourably, with a heavenly, indulgent pudding – a huge thrill for any sweet tooth. So, if exploring the many wings of Bluecoat has got you feeling peckish, look no further. Tuck-in to gourmet picks, if desired, or something less fancy, for an affordable price. And enjoy a laidback atmosphere, a cool exterior & a menu that caters for everyone.

F

THANK YOU SO MUCH JENNIFER, FOR TAKING PART IN AN INTERVIEW WITH US, BABY DAYE LAKE IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING CONGRATULATIONS! YOU MUST BE OVER THE MOON & WHAT A FANTASTIC, ORIGINAL NAME CHOICE TOO - TELL US, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE, ‘DAYE LAKE’?

We decided on Daye Lake two years before we got pregnant. I made it up on the way to Newcastle!

YOU’VE BEEN QUOTED AS SAYING “YOU’D TAKE LABOUR OVER PREGNANCY ANY DAY” - HOW DID YOU FIND PREGNANCY?

To be honest …pregnancy was pants. I think in the grand scheme of things there are people that have it a lot worse. Some of my poor friends are sick from start

to finish. I had a bit of every symptom. I really struggled with the Nausea, it was definitely the worse aspect for me and I had that throughout my pregnancy.

WHAT IS YOUR SAVING GRACE PRODUCT AS A NEW MUM?

Our Joolz pram.. We absolutely love it. We have such a busy life and the last thing you need is an impossible, hard to use pram. We picked the new Joolz Geo² it is lightweight, and super comfortable for Daye. It’s easy to put up and down and looks gorgeous. We also have a personalised bumper bar that is on the way … red to contrast the black coloring of the travel system – so cute!

HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO ADJUST TO FAMILY LIFE? IS IT EVERYTHING YOU WERE EXPECTING?

No one could have prepared us for it.. We love it so much. Apart from the sleep deprivation! But then he smiles at you at 3 am and he’s instantly forgiven.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG MOTHERS WHO ARE JUGGLING A BUSY WORK LIFE WHILST BEING A MOTHER?

Just take everything in your stride and do everything in your own time .. enjoy every minute.

POST-BABY, YOU LOOK PHENOMENAL – WHAT’S YOUR SECRET?

There is no secret; I’m giving my body time to recover and enjoying my new shell for now. I use lighter life fast products to maintain my weight all year round so will be slowly introducing that soon.

AND LASTLY, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF RETURNING TO ACTING & WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER ENTERING THE BABY PRODUCTS MARKET?

I’m taking a year off and returning to Hollyoaks next June! I cannot wait but for now enjoying my new role as a mummy.
