Stagecoach Theatre Arts Hello once again, What a fantastic summer we had! I can’t remember the last time we had so much sunshine in one long stretch. It was wonderful to be able to get outside without the threat of rain looming overhead. In the coming dark and gloomy months we can honestly look back and say “well at least we had a good summer”. I’m sure all that sun has made the autumn colours even more vivid than normal as well - simply gorgeous. So, Christmas will soon be upon us once more. Crafty Christmas Activities
The lead up to Christmas and the holidays themselves are obviously very exciting for all children, but still the cry "I'm bored" can ring out. Here are my 3 top tips to keep little ones entertained over the holidays:
Activity Advent Calendar - Instead of chocolate every day how about writing out an activity to do?It can be as simple as make a Lego snowman or Playdoh Christmas tree to more elaborate treats like go and see a pantomime.
Brilliant Box - There can be lots of lengthy meals over the festive period which can be pretty boring for small children, so start putting together a box with stickers, colouring sheets and small toys to produce when little ones get the fidgets. Crafty Cards - When it is time to take the cards down let your little ones get creative and make a winter collage with them. Just add cotton wool for snow. It doesn’t take much effort to make a large quantity of chicken casserole or a minced beef stew which can be put into small individual dishes that you can pull out of the freezer and then add some mash potato and fresh veggies to. You may also have food you have cooked for your husband or other children that can be mashed and used or reheated the next day to make a tasty lunch for your toddler. Fish cooks very quickly so you may prefer to cook this fresh rather than freeze a large batch unless it is a big �ish pie which you can turn into small portions. Apart from everything else convenience foods are expensive to buy, and if you progress further and start to buy readymade ‘meals’ for your child these are even more expensive. They may still get the same nutritional value from readymade meals but it does not beat home cooking where the child experiences different textures, colours, and the taste from proper food.

I am gob smacked by the number of mums today bringing their children up on convenient pouches like ‘Baby Plum,’ ‘Annabelle Karmel’, and ‘Ella’s Kitchen’ to name but a few. These convenience foods are great as a standby but what happened to proper food! They taste very bland and have no texture and children often get hooked on them as they are easier to eat than real foods. The manufacturers are ready to display their ‘organic’ ingredients and that they do not contain salt, food colourings, and other additives but what they don’t say is that they are running a business and need to sell their products to you!

Method: Pre-heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Line the base and ends of two greased small loaf tins with strips of baking parchment. Pour the hot tea into a mixing bowl with the malt, sugar and dried fruit. Stir well, then add the egg. Stir through prepared damsons. Tip in the flour, then quickly stir in the baking powder and bicarbonate of soda and pour into the prepared tins. Bake for about 50 minutes until firm and well risen. While still warm, brush with a little more malt to glaze and leave to cool. Remove from the tin, cool and wrap. Serve sliced and buttered.
