With 95% of all children now having access to the internet, how do we as parents ‘police’ their online time and what are the actual risks? As parents we need to take responsibility for protecting our children from danger but this can be difficult if we are not fully aware of the risks ourselves. Social Networking certainly has advantages but with it comes a host of problems such as posting hurtful comments, which could be perceived as bullying, or sharing personal details which could lead to unwanted contact. Most children can be impulsive and may not realise that they have posted something ‘inappropriate’ such as a photo or comment that is offensive or hurtful to others until it is too late. The term Cyberbullying is when someone uses the internet to deliberately hurt or harass someone. If your child is being persistently bullied online then it is important that you help them to report it. There are several risks with gaming and chat rooms such as being befriended by a stranger posing as a friend. Always let your children know that someone they don’t know in the real world is a stranger and might not be who they seem. Most devices now come with a ‘webcam’ incorporated, which can allow some children to be ‘coaxed’ into behaving inappropriately online, such as being asked to share a naked photo of themselves. Sexting is a term that is used now for ‘sharing’ photos in this way, but it is very important to keep children safe and discuss the risks of doing this or feeling pressurised. Sometimes children get re-directed to unhealthy networking sites or they may visit websites with inappropriate content such as adult sites. Always make sure that your home internet and any mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets/gaming devices etc have over 18 content blocked. If you are thinking of buying your child a smartphone then check with the provider that filtering is included. A good time to let your child have a mobile is when they are becoming more independent, such as visiting friends and attending clubs. One way that you can help your children is to regularly talk to them about their online world. Ask them questions about which games and applications they like and perhaps share with them how you use social media. If you are more of a technophobe, then ask your children to show you. Most children relish in the idea of being more knowledgeable than their parents! Set some basic Family Rules for being online. These could include the amount of time spent online and also how you would like them to speak to others. Keeping our kids safe online is the same as keeping them safe in the real world. The more you can talk to your children about what they are doing and keeping a dialogue running the better. If you have younger children then start this as soon as possible as it is very difficult to start putting this into practice when they are teenagers. Our top tip is to lay the foundations for discussion and safety now! •

Recycle in Farnham to help charity Count The Kicks is one of the UK’s leading pregnancy charities which aims to drastically reduce the number of families that experience the tragedy of still birth in the UK which currently stands at 17 babies every day. By educating expectant mums on the importance of monitoring their baby’s movements, the charity aim to help to cut this number by at least a third and help expectant mothers have more healthy pregnancies. Count the Kicks runs a recycling scheme across the UK collecting baby wipe packets, baby food pouches, Tassimo coffee pods, sweet biscuit wrappers, used stamps and printer ink cartridges, washing up liquid lids, spray tops on cleaning bottle, household cleaning wipes, clothes and shoes. The recycled goods are turned into funds which go back to the charity. In Aug�st, along with a friend and her children, my four year old son and I went along to watch this f�n-ﬁlled musical adaptation at Hatchlands Park, Clandon. 3

It was a lovely war� summer’s evening and ever�one was sitting on the g�ass with their picnic blankets and delicious food and drinks all laid out in front of them.

The colourf�l characters from Lewis Car�oll’s ‘Alice’s Advent�res in Wonderland’, were t��ly larger than life and came around to have a sur�eal chat with all of the children before the show star�ed. Ty�ically some children were more comfor�able with this than others!

Once the show star�ed songs, dances and interactive f�n were presented by a ver� energetic and enthusiastic cast. The production was thoroughly enjoyed by ever�one present and was a fabulous way to enjoy the war� weather in the beautif�l and pict�resque National Tr�st sur�oundings.
