Our senses, our behaviour Ever wondered why some children seem to have such great difficulty with their behaviour at times? Behaviour that isn’t a usual response to a situation, such as over-reacting to an unexpected bump in the park; avoiding certain play activities that children usually like; being fussy about food; being overly active or conversely lacking ‘spark’; having a tendency to be clumsy because they cannot co-ordinate their movements effectively or problems with self-dressing; joining in with playground games; handwriting problems; having difficulties following instruction or completing a task. The issue is further aggravated by being misunderstood or interpreted as ‘melodramatic’; ‘hyperactive’; ‘lazy’ or ‘egocentric’. It is thought that around 1 in 20 typically developing children may have trouble with what is referred to as sensory processing which interferes with daily life activities and influences self-esteem. So what exactly is it?

Most of the time we are unaware of the complex processing of the sensory input we relentlessly receive: the well-known senses of sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell that enables us to see this magazine, hear the pages turn, feel the smoothness of the cover, enjoy the mug of coffee. In addition, we have equally important senses that tell us about the position of our body as well as information about movement, speed and pressure on our joints and muscles so that we can sit on the sofa without falling over, know how much force to use to turn the pages and the correct resistance required to hold the mug. There are also those internal senses that tell us if we are, for example, hungry or tired.

sensory information is vital as it allows us to focus on what is important and how to respond accordingly without becoming distracted by unimportant sensations. Our ability to take in sensory messages and organise them so that we can respond in an appropriate way is referred to as sensory processing.

Whether we are aware of sensory input or not, it influences how we feel and behave in our every day lives. We all have natural sensitivities and preferences. But when there is a consistent inability to receive and organise sensory messages into appropriate behavioural responses, it impacts on our daily life, affecting our ability to learn, play, work, socialise and perform everyday activities like eating, sleeping, dressing. Children are particularly vulnerable. Their development depends on a well-integrated sensory system. Despite obvious intelligence, health and nurturing, if there are sensory processing issues, they may not be achieving their potential, which in turn leads to frustration, undesirable behaviour and poor self-esteem. So what can be done? There are specific techniques and strategies that could help the ability to integrate sensory information and develop more appropriate responses. This is the role of a children’s occupational therapist (OT) who specialises in working with children with sensory processing issues. OTs enable individuals to do those activities that are necessary and important to them so that he or she may be more successful in play, at school, in social interactions and daily life activities.

If you have concerns regarding your child, contact the OT Team We usually don’t register stimulation that is familiar or we filter it at your local NHS Children’s Service or employ the services out. However, when sensory information is perceived as new, we of an independent specialist children’s OT. With the right help, become sensitised to it so we can respond swiftly. Filtering of your child can experience positive changes and success.

Spring Seasonal Recipe

Cheese, Leek and Potato Pie Ingredients: * 1 leek, cut into chunks * small knob of butter * small pinch dried rosemary/thyme * 200g cooked potatoes * 50g melting cheese, such as cheddar, cut into small chunks * 250g shortcrust pastry * Egg wash (egg and milk) * salt & pepper to season Method: Put the leek, butter and herbs in a pan, cover and cook over a low heat for about 15 minutes until very soft, stirring occasionally. While the leeks are cooking, chop the potato into chunks, transfer to a bowl and stir in the cooked leeks. Leave to cool. Stir in the cheese and season as required. The filling can now be chilled for use the following day, if required. Divide the pastry in two and roll one of the pieces to the size of a small side plate. Transfer this to a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and roll the remaining pastry and trimmings to a round a little bigger than the first. Pile the filling into the middle of the smaller circle, leaving a 2cm border. Brush the border with the egg wash, then drape over the larger piece of pastry. Trim the edges to neaten, then press the sides together with your thumb or a fork. Decorate with left over trimmings. Brush the tart and decorations all over with egg wash and make a couple of incisions. Bake at 180˚C for 25 minutes until golden.
