I’m delighted to introduce a new series of articles from The Parent Project, run by Sheena West and Sarah de Marcos, who provide practical parenting advice with their relaxed and friendly workshops. Sheena and Sarah are experienced and accredited trainers who have supported hundreds of families and currently also work within schools. This issue’s article is all about preparing little one’s for big school - we hope you find it useful. We also have a new Out and About feature which will offer reviews of different child-friendly places to visit. The Secret Garden isn’t all that large but the three rides (Teacup Ride, Car Ride and Hopper Ride) are well laid out, beautifully presented and of course fantastic fun. The Car Ride was our absolute favourite and we would all have happily stayed on it for another few goes if it hadn’t been for the hordes of other children desperate for their own turn! Unlike other rides for young children the cars actually went at a decent, semi-exhilarating speed and we also learnt some wonderful hitherto unknown facts about Kitty. Like the fact that she weighs the same as three apples and has a boyfriend called Dear Daniel!

After the rides we came upon the Hello Kitty Bedroom & Beauty Parlour which is every young girl’s dream come true. You get to set foot inside Hello Kitty’s bedroom (much more mature and less kitsch than I expected) and snuggle up on the bed for a Meet and Greet with Kitty herself. This was all a bit much for some poor lambs who were rendered mute and immobile by the sheer joy of the experience! Children can also have a mini makeovers and face painting done in the beauty parlour. I’ve been to Drusilla’s before and loved the way that you’re directed through all the wonderful animals by the toddler friendly Zoo Route which prevented the usually constant “where has my crazy son run off to now?!” panics. So much easier to track down children in a straight line than going round in circles! Another unexpected bonus is that my friend Ruth and I found the price of food and gift shop items to be very reasonably priced and nowhere near as high as some other large children’s attractions can charge. Of course the entry fee is not exactly cheap (£66 for a family of four) but you can save £10 on the door price if you book online beforehand) and you certainly do get plenty of bang for your buck.

When my firstborn started school I remember the anticipation of dressing him in his newly purchased uniform; gleaming new school shoes and crisp white polo shirt. Little did I realise how scuffed those shoes would become and how fast he would grow, seemingly needing a new pair of shoes every term! Looking back on those early school days, I wish I had taken the time to relish every milestone rather than rush through to the next. My son was a ‘summer baby’ born in July and was seemingly always trying to ‘catch up’ with his peers. My second son was a ‘September baby’ so had already mastered many skills before he joined his classmates. Both boys learnt at their own pace and have achieved the end goal of leaving education with successful results, but more importantly happy and healthy! There certainly was a great deal of competition between parents and milestones where often discussed in the playground each afternoon like ‘golden nuggets’. It was hard sometimes to come away feeling positive and I am sure some parents purposely hung back not wanting to be drawn into the competitive discussion. Where we as parents can help most is to focus on the positives of school and keep our own competitive natures in check. It is too easy to focus on the negatives and children will pick up on this quickly, by focusing in on a child’s strengths we are increasing their self-esteem which is essential for their emotional health.

Digital School Bag Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Barrow Hills School have partnered to form a revolution in teaching at the traditional prep school. Pupils and teachers have been equipped with the latest Samsung Galaxy Note Pro and 10.1 devices and digital S-pens, which connect to Samsung Wi-Fi connected classrooms and work is shared on large 60-inch interactive touch-screen displays that have been installed at the front of each classroom. From the pupils’ perspective, the Samsung Galaxy Notes are the focal point of the connected school: they provide an all-in-one journal, exercise book, text book, creative pad for design and art, a calculator, a research tool and more. This new technology means that pupils can discuss and share projects in real time using Google Hangouts and use the Galaxy Note 10.1’s camera and video functions to record and appraise activities – such as perfecting a gymnastics move, or cricket shot or a drama piece. The Galaxy Note’s S-pen also allows pupils to annotate and correct work digitally, from making corrections to writing exercises to cropping and editing art work and designs. If you have a child due to start school this September there are lots of little things you can do to start to prepare them for ‘Big School’ such as:•

Help to show them how to dress themselves – they will need to do this for PE.

•

Make sure that clothes are easy to get on and off – tights for girls can be tricky.

•

Get them to practice hanging their coat and bag on a hook .

•

Help little boys come to terms with using urinals (check if your school has these) – you won’t believe the number of little boys who have never used one!

•

Make sure they can clean themselves after going to the toilet – accidents happen of course and be sure to pack clean pants etc or check with your child’s school.

•

During the summer holiday practice eating with knives and forks and opening tricky packages such as drinks bottles or unwrapping items if having a packed lunch.

•

A good tip for helping them put their shoes on the right feet is to cut a picture sticker such as a truck in half and paste inside each shoe, so they can match up the picture.

Most schools would ideally like for children starting school to have learnt these skills but again don’t stress if your child hasn’t mastered the technique yet, remember they are learning every day and some just need a little longer. The good news about children is that they are extremely adaptable and will learn at their own pace. I am delighted to report that my ‘summer baby’ obtained a string of very respectable GCSE grades, A levels and is now at University, despite coming home most afternoon in Reception Year with his trousers on back to front! 2014 Summer Reading Challenge: inspiring children to read in their holidays Libraries across the UK are getting ready to introduce children to a fantastical world of legend and mythology that will keep them reading throughout the school summer holidays .... with Mythical Maze, the 2014 Summer Reading Challenge™ run by independent charity The Reading Agency. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice – fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books just as long as they are borrowed from the library during the holidays. There are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library from the end of June onwards and all materials are absolutely free. (NB: exact start dates for the Summer Reading Challenge can vary around the UK, as do schools‘ breaking up dates for the summer holidays: please check with your local library.) “You get more time to read during the school holidays – I really like reading and getting more information. I’m going to do the Summer Reading Challenge again in the summer, it’s fun and exciting,” says eight year old Levent Yasinoglu from Gateshead.
