Yay - summer is here! “Is it? Really? Where?!” I hear you cry. I’m not even sure why we’re surprised any more. I mean it’s not exactly unusual to have crazy, unseasonal weather on this funny little island of ours is it?! After our last issue we received some very useful comments including a request for more editorial to read. To show that we respond to feedback, we’ve launched two new regular features for you to enjoy ... One is written by Brenda Hart, a tremendously experienced nanny/sleep trainer (see Page 8 for article) who was recommended to me when my son was a year old. He had an horrendous sleep pattern that practically had me on my knees. After a few hours with Brenda to come up with a concrete plan of action, he was sleeping 12 hours a night within three days. Over two years later and he’s still sleeping like an angel every single night. Trust me, I never ever thought I would write that last sentence so if you’re facing similar problems then take heart - help is out there. Our other feature (on Page 6) is a healthy and delicious seasonal summer recipe from The Organic Cookery School in Haslemere. This fabulous not for profit organisation works with schools and children’s centres to offer practical cookery and nutrition courses for families. Ingredients: 25g cocoa powder * 150g self raising ﬂour * 1 teaspoon baking powder * 75g caster sugar * 2 tablespoons dried cranberries or sultanas * 30g chopped dark chocolate * 100g cooked grated beetroot * 1 medium egg * 75 ml vegetable oil * ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract * 3 tablespoons milk. Method: Preheat oven to 180 C. Butter and line a 15 cm loose bottomed cake tin or small loaf tin. Sift ﬂour, baking powder and cocoa through a sieve into a large mixing bowl. Add caster sugar. Add dried fruit, chopped chocolate and mix through dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix grated beetroot, lightly beaten egg, milk, vanilla extract and oil. Make a well in centre of dry ingredients and pour in wet ingredients, mix lightly until combined. Spoon into prepared tin and cook for 25 mins. Cool and enjoy!

The Look Out Discovery Centre Over the summer, if you are looking for somewhere to visit, then The Look Out Discovery Centre, Bracknell is a fun place to meet up with friends and family. Where can you launch a rocket, play a light harp, take a picture of your own shadow or make a mini animation… all in one day? There are more than 90 interactive hands-on science and nature activities in the centre, from the hot air balloon and challenging puzzles to creating circuits or designing at the Squirtual Reality exhibit. There is something for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. New for 2013 is Build It! Become a member of the construction crew by building the unﬁnished house -recently described as “awesome!” Plus at The Look Out is a gift shop and coffee shop. The centre is set in 1,000 hectares of Crown Estate woodland with a fantastic adventure play area too! Our super saver ticket is only £18.75 for 2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children (valid until 31.3.14). Children aged 3 and under are free! Special parent and toddler rates for term time. There is a £2 parking charge for a 4 hour visit to The Look Out. However, visitors (adult and saver tickets only) to the hands-on science exhibition who pay on the day will be given a £2 discount, (parking stub needs to be shown at time of purchase).

NEW Party Science show

18th May – 1st September 2013 The Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell is all geared up for a NEW special show! Without giving too much away, visitors can learn a collection of simple demonstrations that they can try out on their friends. Musical bottles and balloon kebabs, cunning paper chains and a birthday cake with a difference contribute to this fast moving interactive show. Show times are at 11am, 12 noon, 2pm and 3.15pm, subject to minimum numbers. Shows run at weekends and Bracknell school holidays. The show is suitable for 4 year olds and over, as it involves sitting down for up to ½ hour.

14th September – 5th January 2014 Is it really possible to have a cube-shaped bubble? Come and look at bubbles of all different sizes and have fun with balloons!
