ulips and spring rains are gone; we’re ready for fullblooming landscapes, pools and patios, and

smokin’ entertainment spaces for summer parties. Coincidentally, there’s all that and more within our summer issue. Starting with this issue, Kansas City At Home will be seasonal, or quarterly, whichever you prefer, in addition to two blueprint issues, our annual relocation guide and the Home Savings coupon book. When you open each issue, you’ll find even more of what you love, from whole homes to personalized rooms and outdoor living areas to gardening masterpieces, plus a slew of lifestyle stories, all to help you live a more inspired life. In this issue, I’m particularly excited about chocolatier Christopher Elbow’s mid-century modern remodel (page 26), which is why I chose it as the location for my current editor’s letter. The new kitchen functions as a high-quality entertainment space, keeping the original spirit of the home intact, and easily transitions to an updated outdoor living area, bounded by nature. Also modern in style is LORAX Design Group’s outdoor living area with pool, sunken seating area, architecturally appealing pergola and pool house (page 38). On a more classic note, Mary White’s landscaping is in full bloom, surrounding the house on all four sides with lush plantings and quaint seating areas, also secluded by a

wooded tree line (page 48); the Sutherland pool house (and pool) is dressed and ready for its overnight house guests (page 58), so bring on the pool party! Additional summer trends and adventure can be found in our Color and Lake Living sections. Though I’ll be approximately 19 weeks pregnant when this magazine hits the newsstands, and knowing full well what a Midwest summer brings, I’m looking forward to many upcoming events (minus the maternity bathing suit possibility): Maddie turns 3; we’re headed back to the Outer Banks, N.C., for a relaxing beach vacation; and, on a professional note, I’ll be scouting numerous outdoor living areas, pools and landscapes

for next summer. I’ll try to post photos as I go; come fall, you might not hear much from me. No matter how you choose to spend the summer, be sure to enjoy the season and all it brings. We’ll see you this fall! kcathome.com | SUMMER 2015

MODERN APPEAL Creating conversations in the design world, Randy and Jane Kietzman, an architect/contractor duo, efficiently designed and built this custom modern model home in Beacon Hill. Many key design elements abound, but it’s the five inset glass floor panels between the kitchen and living room that garner the most attention. Surrounded by engineered trusses, each glass panel — which can hold up to 5,000 pounds and overlooks an outdoor patio with fire pit — has 14 inches between the inside and outside panes. The main level is super insulated (R-value of 50), keeping your toes warm all year long. Rici, the Kietzmans’ Havanese, doesn’t come with the home. kcathome.com | SUMMER 2015

SURROUND SOUND

What’s a pool party without tunes? Keep the music going with Braven’s water-resistant, rugged, Hi-Fi speaker, which is the first of its kind to automatically tune sound frequency so you get the best sound no matter where you are. The speaker’s wireless capabilities allow you to pair it with another speaker for surround sound, and you can even use the integrated speaker phone to make a call from the pool. Best part? If the speaker ends up in the water, it’s not an issue — it can withstand water up to three feet deep for 30 minutes. $199.99. Available at Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy and AT&T. braven.com

POOLSIDE PLAY

Pool volleyball or basketball? How about pool rock climbing? The AquaClimb Ascent can add a safe, fun and unique physical challenge to your pool gathering. The modular systems cater to varying depths of pools; each panel and climbing hold can be rotated to create a variety of climbing features; you can choose your own color configuration. Prices start at $4,500. aquaclimb.com

PERSONAL LOUNGER

It’s one thing to float around in a comfortable pool chaise, it’s quite another to have that chaise be personalized — for you. The Frontgate monogrammed pool chaise oozes both comfort and style with its bronze 2-inch-thick, ultra-buoyant foam cushioning. The armrests come fit with cup holders, and the chaise remains in an upright position. Bonus: Get your initial monogrammed for free. $290. MODERNIZING YOUR SPACE Nobody wants to get stuck in a rut. As closets are cleaned and personal preferences change, so too should a home’s design style. ‘Modernizing’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘renovating;’ minor changes that take minimal time can give a dated look a much-needed face-lift without breaking the bank.

REPLACE HARDWARE

Replacing hardware is one of the easiest ways to make a big difference in a space. “Pewter hardware complements appliances and other metals,” says Jill McPherson of Kansas City Building Supply. She suggests updating some of the most visible kitchen cabinets with 5-inch pulls that give the space an upscale and modern look. Jill also is seeing a trend toward using crystal knobs and diamond-encrusted accents to add a little “bling” to powder rooms. “A lot of people are going for crystal light fixtures as well as hardware,” she observes.

SWITCH OUT FAUCETS

:: TRENDS IN Text by Tiffany Killoren Photos by Chad Jackson Project designs by Ramsey Interiors

Brass faucets in kitchens and baths can be a small feature that speaks the loudest in terms of dated design. “Modernizing a space means going for more clean-lined designs,” says Shay Edwards of Shay Edwards Interiors. Both the design and finish of faucets can transform the look of a room with minimal effort. “Replace brass faucets with ones in a brushed nickel or champagne finish,” she suggests. A fan of Brizo’s product line, Shay notes that the squared edges and sleek look that is typical of modern design can be applied to a room’s finishing touches for a big visual impact.

If you’re willing to take on more than a weekend project or two, the best way to modernize a space is to open it up. Open floor plans, crisp edges and corners, and angled ceilings are all reflective of a clean-lined and contemporary style. Shay describes replacing a curved staircase with an angled design and floating stairs as a dramatic transformation and modernization of a space. And, in terms of design details, she stresses that mid-century and modern designs are all about “less is more.” “Think smaller-sized furniture and fewer accessories,” she says.

EMBRACE COLOR

OPEN UP THE SPACE

Modernizing is all about exploring the color wheel and changing not only the look of a space but also its feel when you walk into it. If your walls are painted in warm earth tones, consider changing their look with a cool yet equally inviting shade of gray. “I’m [still] seeing a trend away from the tan and brown colors that were used 10 years ago,” Jill explains. “Gray will complement any accent color.” She also suggests that people add a little color to liven up a space by investing in a bright piece of artwork, using splashes of color in decor — or on an accent wall with fabric! “Add a splash of red, purple or lime green as accent pillows, and you have changed the look of your furniture.” kcathome.com | SUMMER 2015

id-century modern houses in KC are rare and their inhabitants passionate about them. There’s

even a club called KC Modern developed for these design enthusiasts to connect, preserve, tour and enjoy this specific genre of this particular era. Needless to say, the market is watched closely. So when one comes up for sale, the deal moves quickly. That was the case for chocolatier Christopher Elbow and his wife, Jenifer, who weren’t necessarily looking to buy a new home but happened upon a listing online and hopped in the car for a drive-by. “We both connected quickly with the house,” Christopher recalls. “It’s on 2.5 acres, and by the time we pulled into the driveway and saw the house open up, I had already made my decision.” They made an offer they didn’t expect to get accepted. In fact, they almost hoped it didn’t because, just weeks prior, they had completed renovations on their Brookside house. “I’ve always liked this style of house, the California midcentury ranch, and I knew there were limited opportunities to buy one,” Christopher says. The house was designed in the 1950s by David Runnels, a local architect who attended Cranbrook, an art school that, at that time, was a hotbed of soon-to-be household names in the modern architecture movement: Eames, Bertoia and Saarinen. Real estate agent Bob Myers, who specializes in mid-century modern homes (and is a founding member of KC Modern), coordinated the sale. “He’s sold this house three or four times,” Christopher notes. “He’s like the ambassador

of this house.” The Elbows worried about carrying two mortgages, but, fortunately, an improved market and their recent renovations allowed them to sell their Brookside home in just three days. After everything had moved so quickly, the Elbows were slow to make any updates to their new home. They left it as it was for four years, not sure of the right thing to do. “The house was livable,” Christopher says. “But it had the problems that a 60-year-old house has.” 

Elbow Room.indd 2

27

4/20/15 1:02 PM

Considering a chef lives in the home, you might surmise that the kitchen was at the top of the update list, but it fell more in the middle. The Elbows were most interested in dealing with the functionality issues. “No. 1 for us was replacing the windows. No. 2 was connecting the garage to the house. But that whole part encompassed the kitchen, Christopher says.

The entire living space is “designed to allow for natural passive solar heating and cooling, allowing the living room vault to exhaust the hot air when the upper windows are open,” Jerad explains. Almost all of the furniture in the house is estate sale/garage sale finds, but the coffee table was passed down from Christopher’s grandma; through some research, they determined it was designed by Adrian Pearsall.

Then, once they finally decided to draw up plans for renovations, the costs associated with them were too high. “Everyone was trying to make the house too big,” Christopher explains. “Our intent was not to make it bigger in size but more functional.” Enter one of those aforementioned mid-century modern enthusiasts, architectural designer Jerad Foster of Studio Build. His method of introduction was almost as vintage as the house: He sent an old-fashioned letter in the mail. Not knowing the Elbows, he described his architectural background, affinity for the style and personal knowledge of this house. “Jerad lives in a house built by the same architect, so he understands the original spirit,” Christopher says. Plus he knew the house’s previous owners. Jerad had seen firsthand how mid-century modern homes could be mishandled. “Not a lot of people ‘get it’ on these houses,” he explains. “Chris is a big preservationist

“Our design scheme, in general, is to have a mix of mid-century modern and contemporary furniture,” Christopher says.

— that’s where we hit it off.” Jerad’s solution was to add a small-scale 10-by-12-foot addition to the kitchen area that also connected the house to the garage and gave Christopher the “elbow room” he needed in a modern

As you might expect, Christopher reigns at the helm of this kitchen. Yes, he cooks every night, and, no, he never makes chocolate. “It’s fun. I love to cook at home. It’s different than when I worked in restaurants,” Christopher says. “Jenifer doesn’t cook, but she contributed a lot to this project. She was instrumental in selecting the materials and colors.”

Set back on two-and-a-half acres, you’d never know the house was there. In the summer, the neighbor’s houses aren’t even visible through the trees. “We feel like we’re getting away, like to a lake house or cabin,” Christopher says. In fact, the original owner, who was from Minnesota, commissioned the house as a weekend retreat. “We feel fortunate to have found such a unique house, and Jerad helped us keep that original spirit intact,” he adds.

The kitchen’s layout was designed with separate stations to avoid Christopher’s pet peeve — a bunch of people standing around him when he’s trying to cook — so guests are ushered to the bar area. There, and throughout the entire kitchen, lacquered walnut cabinets strike a modern tone and feature Blum metal drawers with soft close and dividers.

The kitchen is essentially in the same location, and Jerad oriented it so plumbing wouldn’t have to be moved. Christopher asked for tons of countertop space and cabinets, along with high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. Jerad split up the kitchen into two sections to give Christopher his work space and keep everyone else busying themselves at the bar. As a design-build firm, Studio Build worked on the project from start to finish, including building the custom cabinets in its shop. Regarding the latter, there was a major hurdle to overcome: a half-century of the house settling. “Nothing was square or level,” Christopher says. Jerad had to employ some creative carpentry. “Everything looks straight and clean and pretty, but it’s not straight. We made it appear straight,” he adds. Because of the change to the footprint of the house, the job also required a patio update, which became a point of attraction. “When you open the sliding doors, the inside area becomes part of the outside,” Christopher says. One of his favorite additions is the wood-burning oven. “I’m a pizza fanatic,” Christopher says. Once the oven heats up to 900 degrees, a pizza cooks in about two minutes. Since it takes about two hours for the oven to reach that temperature, Christopher has the process down to starting the fire as soon as he walks in the door, preparing the dough and enjoying a few cocktails first. As a whole, the house’s livability has improved dramatically, for both entertaining and even just sitting down peacefully for a few quiet moments, enjoying a piping hot cup of fresh espresso while watching deer and turkey migrate through the yard. “There are minor things we’d have done differently, but we’re beyond happy,” Christopher says. And as a bonus that not every homeowner gets to tout is a project that’s completed on budget. “Jerad nailed it. He listened to our budget and worked with us on that.”

Verticality, elevation, geometry, dimension.

An appreciation for shapes is evident with the L-shaped pool, rectangular wall feature, and vertical lines in the deck columns and tall landscaping.

An intellectual approach to outdoor design can be far from formulaic. Landscape architect Kurt Kraisinger of LORAX Design Group created the multilevel space also to be multipurpose — complete with a pool area, pergola structure, water and fire features, and several seating areas. Simplicity was a guiding principle in the project, as evidenced in a small but select arsenal of materials used in the space. Limestone, COR-TEN steel and Brazilian Ipe hardwood were selected for their natural warmth and high contrast. Limestone is a predominant material in the design, and its multiple finishes and applications attest to both its versatility as well as Kurt’s ability to use the same material in distinctly different ways. The deck columns feature a honed veneer stone finish alongside thin bands of rock-faced stone veneer to create a dramatic contrast. The retaining walls around the property are finished with a split-faced stone veneer with honed stone caps, while the pool deck has a sawn stone finish for added grit and texture. With thoughtful placement of lighting and features in this multilevel space, it’s clear that there was studious consideration to how each element looks during the day and at night, from up high or down below. In collaboration with a lighting designer, Kurt created different lighting in the tree canopies adjacent to the ridge line to create depth and perception, illuminating the architecture of the columns and other distinctive features at night. “Lighting allows your eyes to focus on design elements that you want someone to see,” he says. “You’re not just looking at the entire canvas at once, which can be sensory overload.” w

Overlooking the pool area is a spacious, winding deck that was constructed with steel tube and plate steel vertical supports for the handrails. Kurt continued his clean, industrial look with aircraft cable railing around the deck. The distinctive pergola features the standard open lattice pattern but is artistically augmented by decorative laser-cut aluminum shade panels used in the inlay. Optimizing a visual vantage point was the inspiration for the sunken seating area adjacent to the pool. With Kurt’s emphasis on the importance of verticality, this unique space was an opportunity to implement yet another elevation change.

Decorative laser-cut aluminum shade panels used in the inlay make this structure an intricate work of art by Asheer Akram.

“It’s visually appealing, and you can look at it from different vantage points,” he notes. “It’s a sheltered, quaint space from everywhere else and doesn’t obstruct the views.” The focal point of the space is a feature glass wall with “honed stone blocks set like Legos,” Kurt describes. He laid clear glass rock into a steel mesh cage, which was then backlit with cool white LED lights for illumination. w

At the front entrance is a limestone patio with lowprofile Ipe hardwood and COR-TEN-fabricated bench-style seating and an Ipe Brazilian hardwood-planked low-slung bridge that hovers over a shallow Mexican beach cobble brook, with basalt slab check weirs that create a subtle waterfall. The landscaping along the brook is a simple massing of plants with high contrast to adjacent materials (i.e. Tiger eye sumac next to the Mexican beach cobble).

Intelligent Design.indd 6

4/20/15 2:08 PM

Set amidst an adjacent forest, working with the natural setting was paramount — enhancing it, being mindful not to obstruct it and otherwise integrating the view in a seamless way. To that end, the fencing around the property was constructed with COR-TEN steel, which achieves a modern, minimalist look. Designed to be functional — creating a boundary for the pool and providing security — the “transparent perimeter” lives up to its name to do anything but detract from the views of the lush forest background. There is contrast in the landscaping within the space; Kurt experimented with different forms, heights and textures that evoke a more systematic and deliberate grouping, such as the horsetail reed by the sunken spa and the yellow guard yucca flanking the staircase. “When you get outside the fence, the planting is more naturalistic, more free-form and not as precise, in keeping with the adjacent forest,” he says. Aspen trees, elms, London planetree and magnolias round out the lush landscaping. From the deliberate use of neutral materials to highlight natural elements to the meticulous attention to verticality and vantage points, this entire space, its

{ subtle COR-TEN steel fencing }

custom, flawless layout, can hardly be called textbook landscape design.

ary White loves her house, and for good reason. The handsome story-and-

a-half perched on a limestone bluff and surrounded by killer views of rolling hills and native forest is what Mary calls Nirvana. When Mary built her house in 2005, she, along with her brood of three dogs and three cats, rejoiced in living amidst nature’s gallery. Fashioning a comfortable interior was one thing, but it would take a professional’s eye to design gardens with a scope she imagined. Mary found the landscaper with the skill she was looking for in Sara Antin, owner of Outside Interiors. Sara understood how to interpret Mary’s ideas, suggesting they walk the property together and collaborate on a plan to enliven the grounds immediately surrounding the home. The first order of business was to redesign the front of the house where a 150-squarefoot island inside the circle drive provided a large space. “I envisioned a very organic landscape, brimming with interesting plantings and massive limestone boulders, not just an area dotted with a few bushes here and there,” Sara acknowledges, which is why she designed a water feature with a waterfall spilling into an existing pool that she would eventually enlarge. Enveloped by bursts of colorful perennials and annuals that twine around paths of vintage pavers, the sound of water, along with the texture of rocks and plants, is an instant sensory experience. “Mary found pallets of stamped pavers at an auction that she wanted to use throughout. The natural brick color would provide a nice contrast within this garden,” Sara says. As a taller backdrop

(above): As you turn the corner from the front, Sara created a quaint courtyard with a charming arbor entrance covered in weeping cherry, an area that was once merely rubble where Mary’s dogs ran. (left): Courtyards are inherently charming. Here, the wow factor is heightened by a mélange of textures including Mexican pebbles and Pennsylvania limestone. Overplanting large pots is another element that makes the courtyard so engaging.

Mary and Sara determined a patio featuring a kitchen and fireplace would function as an outdoor room. “An ample backyard suggests an equally ample patio area,” Sara says, referencing the 30-by-30foot space. The square patio platted with a limestone floor, built-in planter and a native Missouri stone knee-wall is the perfect place for Mary to entertain her frequent guests. “There’s so much nature to absorb out here,” Mary says, commenting that it’s not just the view that boggles but the intrepid wildlife that fly, crouch and gingerly investigate. “Bobcat, wild turkey, a small red fox, deer and assorted other creatures are regular visitors.” One notable feature adjacent to the patio is a massive slab of limestone. “The whole area is dotted with giant stones like this one. We left it because it’s so indicative of the geology of this property,” Mary says, turning toward an entire

flank of the limestone outcropping just beyond the backyard fence. Because of the dense terrain of forest and boulders, Mary asked Sara to create a special sitting area hidden in the trees. “I found an antique bench, created a bubbling fountain from one of the large rocks and carved out this shady spot for contemplation,” Sara says. “I’m thoroughly pleased with everything, but this area, quiet and literally surrounded by woods on all sides, is magical,” Mary says. “I can’t think of a better spot to appreciate nature at its best.”

Story by Gloria Gale Photos by Bill Mathews Location: Olathe

Long before Danette Sutherland met her husband, Brandon, she had her eye on living in the Heritage Hill West subdivision. “I knew in high school that someday I wanted a period-style home,” she recalls. “In this development, unique houses are everywhere. As it turns out, I guess dreams really do come true since we live right in the heart of the area.” The Sutherlands’ Prairie-style home is spacious and inviting, but Danette’s vision for the backyard was

Danette found a remnant of Carrara marble for the kitchen countertop. The honed piece is an elegant touch that contrasts with the white wainscoting in the galley kitchen. far different than what initially existed. “Though the property was big enough, it wasn’t conducive for our two young children to play. Instead, I imagined a backyard with plenty of green space, incorporating a variety of outdoor features besides a pool,” she says. After collaborating with landscapers, the backyard evolved over time into a photo-worthy setting that this active family of four would enjoy. By constructing an organic-shaped pool bordered by native limestone boulders, the yard was divided into sections creating a visual barrier to the pond at the far end of the yard. However, even after this major feature was installed, there was more on Danette’s punch list for the generous 1.5 acres. Over the next five years, the family added a large stamped-concrete pool deck, outdoor kitchen, waterfall, fireplace and koi ponds. Once the pool area was finished, Troy Moore, the Sutherlands’ neighbor and owner of Madi Mali Homes, helped design a small pool house adjacent to the pool. “We needed an additional garage and building, what I call a ‘carriage house’ (but what everyone else calls a pool house); the garage on top and house below was a good solution,” Danette says. The pool house, designed to accommodate a range of functions hosted by the Sutherlands, was carefully planned. “I didn’t want it to be too big or too dark,” she says. “Our main house is decorated in shades of brown, so I wanted a completely different feel for the interior of this house.” w

It’s almost a neutral and can be paired with so many different colors, but I chose Coral Reef as our Color of the Year. There’s just something about that color — It’s fresh, lively, energetic and contemporary, but it can be used in many styles. It’s a beautiful accent to white colors, with floral tones and a feminine side. WHERE TO USE CORAL REEF: Sunroom, living room, bedroom, girl’s room or even a patio HER PICKS FOR NEUTRALS: Accessible Beige, Knitting Needles and Dovetail Essential Teal

ERIKA WOELFEL color marketing director, Behr FAVORITE COLOR: Essential Teal from the 2015 trend palette Blue-greens are my favorite decorating colors right now because they harmonize so well with other colors. WHERE TO USE IT: Because it is a deep color, Essential Teal is well-suited for bedrooms, offices and living rooms. SHE ALSO LIKES: Cascade Green, which sits somewhere between a dusty blue and a light mint green. It feels serene and relaxing or can be energized with coral accents or bright lemon yellow.

Stiffkey Blue

CHARLOTTE COSBY head of creative, Farrow & Ball FAVORITE COLOR: Stiffkey Blue While you have to have enough confidence to use it, Stiffkey Blue makes everything look good. I’ve never worked with a color like it before. It’s amazing! WHERE TO USE IT: Everywhere! SHE ALSO LIKES: Breakfast Room Green (from the 2015 color trends palette). Green hasn’t been a very popular color in years. Everyone wants to see neutrals, so I’m really excited to start playing with it again.

Deep Cerise

KELLY BERG style and design guild member, Pratt & Lambert FAVORITE COLOR: Deep Cerise This is a gorgeous chameleon-like hue. It can definitely be classified as a red, but it has a softness to it that makes it a little less commanding than your typical red. It can read pink or coral when combined with yellow-greens, creating a fresh, spring-y vibe. Or it can become rich and dramatic when paired with deep, earthy grays. Believe it or not, Deep Cerise could very well be that perfect neutral for which you are looking! WHERE TO USE IT: Bedrooms, powder rooms, dining rooms and living rooms

Lichen

DEE SCHLOTTER senior color marketing manager, North America, PPG Architectural Coatings, Glidden, Olympic and Ralph Lauren FAVORITE COLOR: PPG Lichen It is such a refreshing, spring green. WHERE TO USE IT: Living room SHE ALSO LIKES: Glidden’s Caribbean Sea, Olympic’s Indian Clay and Ralph Lauren’s Renoir

ANDREA MAGNO Color Studio manager, Benjamin Moore FAVORITE COLOR: Blue Danube This color is dark, but not so dark that you lose the sense of it being a blue. Its depth and richness is very appealing, plus it allows for a saturated wall color that doesn’t overwhelm a room. This navy blue is so versatile; it’s a great choice for me since there is so much to be done with accessories and accents that I never find myself bored with this wall color.

Blue Danube

WHERE TO USE IT: Blue Danube can be used in any room. The key to making it look great involves ratio and proportion. For a look that is rich and enveloping, think about painting the walls of a living room or dining room. For a more casual or sporty mood, add wainscoting in a crisp white that will maintain lightness in the space while allowing for the use of a deeper color. WHAT TO PAIR IT WITH: In the summer, navy paired with white (such as Chantilly Lace) or pale green (such as Guilford Green) creates a fresh, classic look, while in the winter, it looks great with grays and neutrals (such as Manchester Tan, Stonington Gray or Revere Pewter).

Heirloom Tomato

SUE KIM color strategist, Valspar FAVORITE COLOR: An active and lively orange like Valspar’s Heirloom Tomato Change is in the air, and optimistic and action-oriented shades like this vibrant orange breathe in a renewed life at home. Families are moving beyond a typical family structure, and our lives at home are mirroring that. We are ready to redefine our home by rearranging the use of traditional spaces. This orange shade captures the dynamic and individual approach to redress our home. WHERE TO USE IT: In a breakfast nook or as an accent wall in a kitchen

Story by Brooke McGrath | Photos by Paul Bonnichsen Location: Lake Quivira It’s one thing to design a custom kitchen with highly functional storage space and top-of-the-line appliances; it’s quite another to incorporate Caribbean colors with Grand Canyon influences and local artisans’ creations. Welcome to Cliff and Caryl Earp’s vision-turned-reality, a dream kitchen project led by designer Cherie Brown of Kitchens by Kleweno. In this tear-down, rebuild on the lake, the original drawings showed a somewhat secluded L-shaped kitchen located toward the back of the home with one island, zero outdoor space and no direct views of the lake out front. While its location didn’t change, the redesigned open-concept kitchen now has two islands,

with 360 degrees of storage, interaction with the dining and living rooms, direct access through sliding glass doors to an outdoor living area — fireplace, hot tub, dining space and a terraced concrete retaining wall with more seating and an integrated waterfall — and, yes, views of the lake. That’s the big picture. w

Anchoring the kitchen is the range wall, which brightly — and proudly — showcases a backsplash of Havasu Falls, where the Earps have taken their 11-year-old daughter, Isabella, hiking and swimming some seven or eight times. The custom tile work by Archival Designs features lots of movement, color and texture, defining itself as one of the main focal points in this space. Batzes’ master bathroom remodel, styled with seaside finds and colors. An interior designer by trade, Tatia knows what

it takes to make a space look good. Throughout the past 10 years that they’ve owned their Loose Park home, she and Josh have worked on almost every room, with help from designer Megan Bringman, AKBD, of Schloegel Design Remodel. Last year, their efforts turned to the master suite. The bathroom’s footprint, a compact 110 square feet, basically stayed the same, but the old

monochromatic, galley-style bathroom was completely gutted and the doors and plumbing moved, improving the function two-fold. Previously remodeled in the ‘80s, the bathroom had the same white laminate cabinets and white solid-surface counters as in the original kitchen, black granite floors, a door to a bidet and toilet that faced each other, and split double vanities. “It was hard for two people to even be in there,” Tatia says. “It was completely uncharacteristic of this 1930s traditional home,” Megan adds. “The design mission was to bring this space back to a traditional style while still incorporating some modern flair.” A design challenge — and interesting architectural detail —

MAISON MOD SCULPTURE For Rod Parks, owner of KC‘s pre-eminent mid-century furniture dealership Retro Inferno, outdoor sculpture is a passion. His fascinating Nicol House in Crestwood has at least 20 sculptures surrounding the property. One special upcycled sculpture sitting next to his swimming pool originally served as a glass and steel fish pond inhabiting the second floor of Bruce Goff’s infamous Shin-en Kan House in Bartlesville, Okla. Rod restored it and had it painted red for stunning effect. While he primarily displays furnishings in his downtown shop, he occasionally has smaller-scale outdoor sculpture. Being deeply connected and knowledgeable about 20th-century furnishings and sculpture, Rod can be commissioned to “scour” the market for you, as he has access to dealers all across the country.

RELIVE THE RENAISSANCE The recently installed, colossal contemporary sculptures, The Four Seasons, Philip Haas’ 15-foot-tall, threedimensional interpretations of Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s portrait series of the same name, will serve as an impactful backdrop for museum events this summer. Don’t miss The NelsonAtkin’s largest summer festival, the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park celebration and Kansas City’s Big Picnic on Sunday, July 19 from 4-7 p.m. Adults also can enjoy a special presentation by the artist on Thursday, May 28 in the Atkins Auditorium as he discusses his inspiration and process to transform Arcimboldo’s iconic The Four Seasons into monumental, three-dimensional sculptures.  Philip Haas’ 15-foot sculpture from his series, The Four Seasons, is up through July.

COOKING 101:

IT’S ALL ABOUT TECHNIQUE The secret to Executive Chef Charles d’Ablaing’s famous stone-ground grits is to layer the ingredients, let sit on the stove top awhile before stirring then season only with salt and pepper. This dish, paired with Arcadian Moon’s Lyra, a refreshing semi-dry Vidal blanc, made the rounds a second time at our recent cooking event in Nebraska Furniture Mart’s Kitchen Design Studio. (You can find Charles and his grits at The Raphael Hotel.) Other courses included the Chilean sea bass and prime beef tenderloin, both cooked to perfection, with banana cheesecake (which came with what the chef calls a “fancy vanilla pudding”) and appropriate wines paired by assistant winemaker Kim Musket. This four-course menu, enhanced with extra helpings and wine refills, made for quite a happy meal.

Sipping Poolside Wanting the perfect place to enjoy their favorite summer drink, these homeowners created an outdoor living area that provided that — and a whole lot more. Story by Diana Lambdin Meyer Photos by Matt Kocourek Location: Grove, Okla. Jeremy and Christina Riggs are so passionate about their mojitos on a hot summer day that they designated a specific spot in the landscape for growing fresh mint near their new swim-up bar, pool and outdoor living space. The little spot for fresh mint is indicative of the attention to detail and personal style that makes the 5,000-square-foot addition to the lakefront home the exclamation point on their love of water, the outdoors, and entertaining with family and friends. The Riggses are the second owners of the home, built in 2000, and were adamant that the outdoor space flow seamlessly without steps or any other indication that the pool area was added 13 years later. An original deck that extended nearly 45 feet along the length of the second floor was removed and rebuilt by Draper Construction. Because the ground-level patio would later be covered in pine flooring, owner Terry Draper worked with a product new to his expertise called Trex RainEscape, a drainage system that keeps water from the upper level from damaging the lower wooden patio. Terry also used for the first time a conversion varnish on the

tongue-and-groove ceiling of the cabana, which contributed to the low-maintenance standards that the Riggses insisted upon. The Riggs family moved from the Oklahoma panhandle specifically to be on Grand Lake. As they were envisioning their outdoor living space, it was important that the cabana be spacious and airy but also not block the view of the lake or the boat dock from their breakfast area. They also adjusted the height so that the view enjoyed

by their neighbors wasn’t compromised either. Because of the hillside slope from the house to the waterfront, the 10-foot-high retaining wall was essential to create the 5,000 square feet of flat surface needed for the pool and living area. “Anytime you are designing with a slope like those that lead to manmade lakes, you are going to have a pretty good-sized wall,” says Scott Lynch of Landscape Design Consultants in Tulsa. A first for him was incorporating a swim-up bar with the free-formed, organic shape of the pool used to complement the lake’s natural architecture. The greater depth required for the five barstools in the pool’s saltwater required some additional excavation, but everyone involved in the project agrees that the pool bar is a highlight. That portion of the pool is shaded by the cabana roof extending from the kitchen/living area, which also houses a wood-pellet smoker and 54-inch fireplace with a 48-inch firebox. The space is cooled by a number

of ceiling fans and warmed in the fall and spring with radiant heaters in the ceiling. Jeremy splurged on a Control4 home automation system that manages the fans, lights, TV, music and other features from his iPhone. The family celebrated the completion of their outdoor living space on Memorial Day weekend 2014 with nearly 120 neighbors, friends and employees. “We were really impressed that the size of the crowd did not seem like a crowd at all, but that everyone blended well into various spaces,” Jeremy says. “It was exactly what we had hoped for.”
