W

hat makes for great horror? Why do we love a good scare? What makes Halloween a favorite holiday?

There are many possible answers to these questions, and you might find some of them at the Famous Monsters Halloween Convention. Is it iconic monster design, the creation of character so recognizable that it represents the horror genre all by itself? You could ask Ricou Browning, who donned the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON suit for three separate movies, or grill Emmy and Oscar-winning makeup maestro Michael Westmore on how to make the perfect memorable alien. Or ask the incredible Doug Jones, who has worn so many iconic monster makeups it’s a wonder he doesn’t have multiple personalities (hey, maybe he does — that’s what the Q&A is for). But it might be something else. A sense of unnerving tension, of something creeping along the back of your spine… The cast of IT (1990) would certainly know, having faced off with Pennywise the Clown in scenes of perfect terror. FRIGHT NIGHT’s Stephen Geoffreys and Amanda Bearse have also been intimately familiar with this sensation, having to escape an alluring vampire in one of the most memorable 80s horror pictures of all time. Halloween haunts from ScareCo and Dead Time Dreams also house experts in this particular field — those dedicated to giving that creepy feeling over and over, as vividly as possible, even all year round! Is it a legacy, a continuing revival of thrills and chills that never fail? Look at George A. Romero, who managed to create an entire genre by himself (where would zombies be without him?) and whose body of work continues to inspire artists around the world. Or how about Rocky Horror, a musical over 40 years old that keeps entertaining new generations with its glam rock sci-fi style? Actors like Doug Bradley and Jeffrey Combs have created horror icons that have outlasted other pop culture heroes; their insight can offer something, too. Perhaps it’s something even more basic: a masked madman, a nightmare, a scary story around a campire. Horror, and thus Halloween, is about how art is so effective it makes you stand back in terror or turn a page in anticipation of the next moment. The monster designs, chills, legacies, and icons continue to bring us together, year after year, in celebration of creative fear and our unending love for it. Because in fact, what horror really comes down to is the fans and what they love. Without people like you, there would be nobody to frighten. And at the Famous Monsters Halloween Convention, you can celebrate being the reason that great horror exists.

OF SCUM AND VILLAINY: GAME OF THRONES GAME OF THRONES has become much more than another TV show — it’s a true phenomenon. Join the Night King himself, Richard Brake, as he discusses his hours in the makeup chair, becoming sufficiently evil, and other trials of being a high fantasy villain. A CENTURY OF WESTMORE MAKEUP EFFECTS In 1917, George Westmore opened a wig shop in Hollywood and sowed the seeds of what would become the film industry’s most enduring empire. From GONE WITH THE WIND to ROCKY, generations of Westmores have been an indispensible part of movie makeup. Historian Christiana Benson sits down with Michael Westmore and Michael Westmore, Jr. for a roundtable on Westmore family history and what makes for a good makeup. MALCOLM MCDOWELL: THE Q&A “What’s it going to be then, eh?” Why, a whole hour of listening to Malcolm McDowell, of course! From Kubrick’s legendary CLOCKWORK ORANGE to CALIGULA, STAR TREK, and the films of Rob Zombie, McDowell has seen it all

in the genre film world, and now he wants to share those stories with you. HELLRAISER: 30 YEARS OF SWEET SUFFERING The Cenobites, demonic characters in Clive Barker’s HELLBOUND HEART novella who eventually became the poster boys for 1987’s HELLRAISER, have endured in horror fandom like few other monsters and continue to inspire fans around the world. Come see three of them — Doug Bradley (Hell Priest/ Pinhead), Nicholas Vince (Chatterer), and Barbie Wilde (Female Cenobite/Gash) — have a discussion about acting under heavy makeup and what it means to be recognized as a torture demon! NEIL GAIMAN’S AMERICAN GODS ON SCREEN A modern fantasy classic, AMERICAN GODS is considered the seminal work of British import Neil Gaiman, and became a much-lauded Starz TV show in 2017. Actors Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy), and Demore Barnes (Mr. Ibis) give us a rundown on the successful first season and tease what may be coming next!

COSTUME AND COSPLAY CONTEST It’s Halloween, which means we’ve got two events in one! Come impress the judges in one of our many categories: Best in Show, Best Group, Best Family, Best Individual (Youth), Best Individual (Adult), Best Horror (Youth and Adult), Best Character Portrayal, and Best Makeup. ADRIENNE BARBEAU: THE Q&A Adrienne Barbeau (THE FOG, THE SWAMP THING) has been an onscreen badass for longer than most current female stars have been alive, and she’s still kicking butt in shows like CARNIVALE and REVENGE. Hear her set stories, ask for advice, or have her say a line as Catwoman from BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES during this special spotlight panel. JEFFREY COMBS: THE Q&A You think you know Jeffrey Combs? The man behind stories of Lovecraft, Poe, and so many guest roles on STAR TREK he’s nearly made a career of it is open to your questions (and adoration) at this special spotlight panel. DOUG JONES: THE Q&A When it comes to moving under monster

makeup, actor Doug Jones is not only an expert, but a recognizable personality, having been the soul of characters like Abe Sapien from HELLBOY, the Silver Surfer from FANTASTIC FOUR, and the Pale Man from PAN’S LABYRINTH. Now he joins the bridge of CBS’s new STAR TREK series DISCOVERY! Come ask him your burning questions. FACE OFF: UNDERNEATH IT ALL SyFy’s hit competition series FACE OFF has filmed thirteen seasons and shows no signs of slowing down, proving that practical makeup effects are alive and well! Join series mentor Michael Westmore and series contestants Walter Welsh and Alan Carnes as they discuss what it feels like to create a creature under a time limit. THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT KILLER CLOWNS: IT (1990) REUNION Before New Line’s 2017 production of IT broke box office records, the novel was adapted into a widely appreciated miniseries starring Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown and a smattering of relative unknowns as the childhood heroes. On our special IT Reunion Panel, hear from the original Beverly (Emily Perkins), Mike (Marlon Taylor), Ben (Brandon Crane), and Stan (Ben Heller) and learn how it feels to be part of the legacy! CREATING THE UNIVERSAL CREATURE Arguably the most popular Universal monster of all time, the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON has become an icon not only in cinema but in pop culture as a whole. Underwater creature actor Ricou Browning, last living legend to wear a Universal monster suit, will be in conversation with Michael Westmore, whose uncle Bud Westmore made the Creature suit! THE BELA LUGOSI LEGACY “Lugosi” is a holy name in horror thanks to Bela’s striking portrayal of Count Dracula in Universal’s 1931 adaptation of DRACULA, as well as his memorable roles in WHITE ZOMBIE, THE BLACK CAT, and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN. Learn about the legacy straight from Bela Lugosi, Jr., who has countless stories to tell about his legendary father. VERNON WELLS: THE Q&A A post-apocalypstic landscape is never

complete without an iconic villain, and Vernon Wells roared into THE ROAD WARRIOR with such fervor as to help the Mad Max franchise become one for the books. Learn about Wez and his other roles in COMMANDO, POWER RANGERS, and many more in this special spotlight. FAMOUS MONSTERS TV Bringing the pages of Famous Monsters to life! Famous Monsters TV just completed its successful first season on KOFY, and Producers Philip Kim and Jorge Marrero along with hosts Holly Interlandi and Kevin Lyons will be giving you the lowdown on what to expect in the future! SILVER SCREAM FESTIVAL 2018 It’s coming back to California for year three! The Silver Scream Film and Comic Festival will be held in Santa Rosa once again at the Roxy 14, featuring the very best in independent filmmaking, animation, and graphic novels. Co-founder Neil Pearlmutter and panel judges Jorge Marrero and Holly Interlandi will let you know what it takes to get past the first round! STUNTS 101 When the director calls “Cut!” and a main actor gets off the set, it’s time for the stuntmen to take over. Sometimes wearing a particular mask can make you the star of the show! Hear from three-time horror icon Tom Morga (who’s played Leatherface, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees) and industry veteran Bobby Clark (who filmed several episodes of STAR TREK, including “Arena” as the Gorn) as they talk about taking hits and moving under heavy costumes! THE ROB ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE He’s remade HALLOWEEN and its sequel, put a thousand corpses in a house, raised up THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, made LORDS OF SALEM, and recently brought us 31. He’s Rob Zombie, and two of his most frequent alumni — Richard Brake and Jeff Daniel Phillips — are here to talk about what it’s like to work for the horror maestro on set! ZACH GALLIGAN: THE Q&A Don’t feed the Mogwai after midnight… 80s genre star Zack Galligan (GREMLINS, WAXWORK) knows a thing or two about strange creatures and portals to other dimensions, and this is your chance to pick his brain on what’s past and what’s to come!

FAMOUS MONSTERS AND AMERICAN GOTHIC PRESS Even through all of its various media incarnations — website, podcast, television — Famous Monsters remains steadfastly dedicated to print, both in the form of a yearly annual and original comic books. Join Publisher Philip Kim and Editor Holly Interlandi to hear about new projects and how you can be a part of them! FRIGHT NIGHT: STILL FREAKY A true 80s horror classic, FRIGHT NIGHT is both goofy and terrifying and haunted many a teenager down the aisles of video stores. Original cast members Amanda Bearse and Stephen Geoffreys share their thoughts on vampires, comedy, and even that pesky remake... GEORGE ROMERO, 1940-2017 The films of George A. Romero changed not only horror, but the entire pop culture landscape. His death shook the industry and has prompted people to look back not only at classics like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAWN OF THE DEAD, but lesser-known favorites like MARTIN and THE CRAZIES. This massive memorial tribute will feature the casts of DAWN and DAY OF THE DEAD, current horror stars, artists, friends, and more. ELECTRONICS FOR COSPLAY AND PROPS Light! Sound! Motion! If you’re looking to get started, this panel separates hype from fact, explaining the terminology, printer selection, and maximizing the potential of the medium. CREATURE SUIT PERFORMING Demons! Dragons! Werewolves and monsters! Aspiring cosplayers and haunters will learn the unique challenges of portraying non-human characters. Topics include personal safety, acting and body language, and suit hygiene and maintenance. RAWR! HORROR AS THE PORTRAIT OF

DORIAN GREY Horror has always reflected civilization’s greatest hubris as well as its greatest fears. What does the portrait of the current horror landscape reflect then for modern global societies? He started opening his house to the public in the early 1950s, a tradition he would carry on through three Ackermansions, until 2008. JACK PIERCE, MAKER OF MONSTERS In today’s cinematic world of digital effects, telling what is real from what was created on a computer is nearly impossible.
