WARM WELCOME
o linger can mean so much. Sometimes we link it with definitions that bring about negative connotations – such as taking a long time to do something, being slow and procrastinating. But let me tell you something; there’s nothing negative about lingering. We should take longer to do something. We should be slow – or rather slow down. And it’s absolutely fine to indulge in a little bit of procrastination every now and then. The glorification of busy is exhausting, so let’s allow ourselves to linger more. Our passionate parenting columnist, Christy Herselman of The Chat, digs deeper into this sweet gift and explains how it can give us a sense of belonging – on page 30.
But we haven’t forgotten about the men, of course. We have two local musos, a driven entrepreneur and a talented young golfer for you in this issue as well.

Visitors coming to buy mushrooms then started buying their fresh veggies at the farm too, and The Veggie Shop was born. “Other shops, such as Garden Decor and Peel’s Honey, then made their homes at the farm – followed by GoFresh Café. When
the Covid pandemic began in 2021, my wife, Jean, and I were directed to the Hillcrest Government Hospital for our first jabs. There they were quickly and efficiently administered.
The report noted that the health committee’s most pressing need was a safe and adequate water supply. The original plan was to dam a stream flowing down the Giba Gorge, at St Helier, where one would be built in the next century. The report urged the local health committee to approach the Provincial Administration with a view to meet this need by setting up a regional scheme covering the area from Botha’s Hill to Westville. This did not happen until the building of Midmar Dam in the middle of the 20th century. Before that, the village relied on water from the Nkutu stream. It was on the banks of this stream that the first Voortrekker settler established his farm, which he called Langefontein after the charming waterway.
But the history of this hospital goes far further back than that. Elizabeth Camp’s most instructive collection of material on early Hillcrest, Lest We Forget (1999), reveals that the Natal Provincial Administration built the hospital “for the chronic sick” 93 years ago, in 1929. It was erected on a 34-acre piece of land that was previously owned by R.N. Acutt –
OCTOBER 2022
a member of the property agent family who from 1895 had promoted the sale of stands on the section of William Gillitt’s land that would become Hillcrest.
An even more serious problem was that there was no public sewerage system in the village, and each property owner had to provide for his own needs. Some had septic tanks, others had pit privies and yet others had pail closets.
On 24 February 1944, an inspection by the Union Health Department reported that the health committee area of Hillcrest had come into effect under Proclamation 21 of
1943. At this time the European population of Hillcrest totalled 585, including 200 staff and patients at the hospital! It was also noted that the nearest general hospital was at Mariannhilll, 10 miles away. The Hillcrest Chronic Sick Hospital served the entire province of Natal.

hospital as they did all other residents of the growing village. The first was that there was no public water supply. Many villagers had rainwater tanks beside their houses — boys in their beds at Chard’s School used to hear their teachers tapping the tanks to determine the level of water in them. Other residents went to the railway siding to draw water from the tanks erected to supply the steam engines.
This report also mentioned two general problems that would have affected the

But this was by no means our first introduction to the place. Several decades earlier it had been a local repository for educational films, which Jean used in her classroom. Borrowing them involved one trip to collect the material and then another trip to return it. Over the years we also visited several old and infirm friends who were being cared for in the institution.
The Hillcrest Government Hospital is one of the oldest remaining institutions in what is now the Outer West. The Department of Health reports that in 2022, in addition to the 167 beds for chronic or abandoned patients, there are eight in an isolation ward. The aim is to develop the hospital into a full facility for the rehabilitation of as many patients as possible.

that is where we need to pause a little. An investment in their future. With any investment you would consider what exactly you are investing in. Before you invest, you will usually do research, ask questions, compare your options, and then carefully consider, before you commit. Higher education is obtaining a credible qualification that ultimately serves as a step into an industry of your choice. And with that, parents want to know that their kids will graduate being employable. So the big question is … what makes graduates employable?

There are two critical things at play here: 1) Soft skills (and future skills), and 2) Experience. Soft skills such as grit, agility, and the ability to collaborate and solve problems are only truly learnt through application – you must do it to master it. This, combined with the requirement of a minimum two years’ of experience, suggests that gaining practical and relevant experience during your studies and even before you graduate, matters.

Then the logic is, for parents, to invest in higher education and consider postgraduate studies that produce smart thinkers, and smart doers, with a can-do attitude, and a real-world industry portfolio of work. The aim is to become industry and world fit. Not to always fit in, but rather to stand out, and thrive.

In other words, parents and learners need to ask higher education institutions of their choice what industry-ready and real-world experience they will gain during their studies, as an integral component of the programme design and an institutional teaching methodology.

So in this demanding, fastpaced world where busyness is some kind of sadistic badge of honour, give yourself permission to linger: in that early morning snuggle with your spouse, over that cup of tea with a friend, in that Lego building with your child. The importance of dishes and emails pale in significance, because people are always the prize. We will make time for the urgent things in life, but these important moments can easily slip

NO BELONGING withoutlingering
The
irony of this moment does not escape me. I sit writing this article amidst probably the busiest five days I have had this year so far. I have done 12 talks in three cities, missed two of my sons’ hockey matches and my daughter’s surfing competition. I have slept way too little and worked way too much. Meals have been on the fly and most of my conversations with my husband have consisted entirely of logistics.
And yet I know that this cannot be my normal. Busy times are par for the course, but busy lives rob us of so many things, including the sweet gift of lingering. I knew that these few days would be crazy and so did my family, but I knew that tonight I would get to linger around the dinner table with my family, celebrating the 13th birthdays of my twin boys. And I cannot wait.
I love the dictionary definition of “to linger”: to stay in a place longer than necessary because of a reluctance to leave. It is such a wonderful feeling and more crucial to our emotional and relational well-being than we might think. One more bedtime story even though it’s a school night, beach days that turn into sundowners,
conversations around the dinner table while the dishes go unwashed … there is something sacred and beautiful about lingering. And as it turns out, lingering is as important as it is beautiful.Somany things happen when we linger with people we love: agendas and schedules fall by the wayside, we step off the hamster wheel and enjoy the gift of the moment, we see and are seen, we are fully present and we remember what is really important. And it is only with lingering, being together in unhurried spaces, that we are filled with the sense of belonging, of being rooted and deeply connected with one another that we as human beings need to thrive.

I have been afforded the opportunity to visit incredible places around the world to share my insights – from the Czech Republic to Egypt, Singapore and Hawaii,” says Gabby. “In these exotic spaces I have met amazing people who have taught me so much. Mostly how much I don’t know.”
After completing her BA at the University of KZN, Gabby began working at Sea World – the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), in 1990. As a result of growing up looking after rescued critters, she developed skills at hand-rearing penguins in distress, and loved getting to know the rest of the Sea World family. “My folks had developed an inherent love for animals in the way they had raised me. And psychology was a part of my degree – it led to a great love for animal behaviour management.”
“My mother grew up in a forest in Mpumalanga. She was raised on horseback,” adds Gabby. Growing up near the Kruger Park, hand-rearing kittens, birds and other wild orphans was the order of the household. “My childhood was idyllic – my best friends were always animals.” It makes sense, then, that Gabby always knew she was going to work with animals. “It truly feels like I have been a passenger on a prearranged, coordinated ride.”

15 years later, Gabby got her first horse. “He led me to another mentor, who taught me about horse gentling. I took all the time off from work I could and followed him around the country. We assisted SAPS to train their horses in a more ethical and safe manner. Learning about horses helped me with all other species.”

Osteoporosis occurs with increasing frequency over the age of 70 years, resulting in decreased bone density and bone weakness, often causing spinal compression fractures and deformity. These fractures can be very painful and often arise after minimal impact or force. Minor fractures are treated with analgesia and bracing until the pain resolves, which may take several weeks. The osteoporosis must also be investigated and appropriately treated. Major fractures with deformity will require minimally invasive surgery. This surgery is performed by injecting bone cement into the spine (kyphoplasty) to prevent further collapse and relieve pain.

In patients over 60, backpain is often due to serious and permanent conditions such as degenerative changes or osteoporosis. Muscular pain accounts for 85% of all cases of backache, and is caused by overuse and repetitive stress of the muscles of the spine. It can also result from stress or from being overweight. Muscular back pain is often found in patients under 45 years old, but may occur at any age. It results with pain over the lower back, often to either side, but that does not spread to the legs. Muscular backache is not a serious condition and the pain typically lasts less than six weeks. Thanks to TikTok, “Slugging” is the skin care trend going viral. Slugging is the act of lathering a heavy-duty occlusive, such as Vaseline or a petrolatum-based product, to your skin as the last step in your evening regime. It is aimed at locking in moisture and any other ingredients you have applied, to prevent loss of moisture to the skin barrier,
enabling your skin to repair itself.Be warned, slugging isn’t for everyone and can result in break-outs if you have oily or sensitive skin.

Being boys-only means that boys take part wholeheartedly in activities that otherwise are traditionally dominated by girls.

consumer buying practices, it is imperative that your retail business has a clear strategy to achieve optimal sales productivity. The role social media plays is that it helps a business drive its pipeline by engaging with consumers early in the process, and maintaining relationships with current customers. Buyers are considering the legitimacy of a business based on their presence on social media, in the same way that the website was a factor in the 1990s. It is important to understand that creating an Instagram or Facebook account does not magically generate leads and sales. If your business does not employ a system of capitalising on the followers and likes, you will never see an impact on the bottom line.
The true value of social media comes when your business is able to bridge the differential between the buyer, the social platform and the sales process. It is not a quick fix, but it is extremely beneficial and represents another tool in the seller’s repertoire.
Businesses have dealt with more change in the past three years than in the past three decades, and there has been a massive increase in the number of channels that businesses are selling on. All of this change has altered the manner in which we shop, sell and ship goods.
4. Post with Intention – If you engage with a person on social media, have a purpose. Every interaction is vital and can end in a successful sale.

and lifetime value, because if you invest more in your customer’s experience, you will build a community that keeps customers coming back.
2. Consistent Messaging – It is important for sales and digital marketing to work together to create message consistency. A defined process that helps sales organisations leverage marketing’s digital content will help drive consistency and repeatability.
There are four ways tosellingyourintegratesocialintoyoursalesprocess:
Nearly half the world’s population use social media daily, and according to Hootesuite, that equates to about 3.5-billion people. Not only do consumers spend significant time on social media, but their spending habits are changing, and people now want to buy from brands that align with their social beliefs. So, build a brand online that stands for something. Global shoppers are more likely to buy from a company with shared values and a business that has focused on customer retention

3. Regular Engagement –The key to capturing true value of social selling is to make it consumable for your sales team, and easy for them to engage with.
One issue however, with the move of so many customers online, is that the customer acquisition costs have risen enormously. And so it is now more important than ever to increase customer lifetime value. It is also important not to completely rule out the magic of in-person experiences in store, because ideally customers want both. Customers want to order online but return in store, or see a product in the warehouse and buy it online. What this means for the retailer is that they need to be equally competent selling in-store and digitally, where e-commerce sites link effectively to their Facebook and Instagram platforms –allowing for a smooth customer experience.
1. Right Place, Right Time – Use social media to answer questions and demonstrate value throughout the sales process.

Wayne and his family, based in the US, purchased Cheetah Ridge from Rob in 2020, and have been operating it with the same staff ever since. “We have invested in the lodge and begun refurbishment of the lodge and amenities. We have built a beautiful tennis court and upgraded the spa. The kitchen has seen a refit, as has the bar. There are bigger plans already drawn up, which we are implementing as we speak, to enhance the guest experience. A new restaurant, spa, boma, and completely renewed suites. This should all be complete by the end of 2023.”

“Rob built a lasting legacy – a thriving game reserve with a biodiversity that is so unique that it brings people from all over the world,” says Wayne Scholes, owner of Cheetah Ridge Lodge. “Cheetah Ridge was the original farmhouse on the reserve, Rob lived here with his family and I think that is why there is such a beautiful family vibe here. It’s a place born from family, and we welcome families here to this day.”

“You did find me Archie comics last time,” I reminded her.
“Well, they’re not as funny as they used to be. Jughead isn’t the same.”
“First, you’ll spend a day saying how you never get sick, and I’ll have to persuade you that you are in fact getting sick and that you have to stay in bed while I bring you food and medicine. Then finally, with an air of doing me a favour, you will agree to lie down and be waited upon. Then you’ll start wistfully telling me stories about how when you were sick when you were young, your mother would bring you special treats and Archie comics, and then I’ll say I don’t know where to find Archie comics because it’s not the early 80s, and then you’ll nod feebly and say it’s fine, you understand, but you’ll say it in such a way that implies that if I really cared about you – the way your mother did – I would know where to find Archie comics.”
This was an outrageous slur upon my character. I’m a grown man. I didn’t need my mother. “Don’t call my mother!” I yelled.

“I found these old Archie comics in the garage,” said my mother, as she came in that afternoon. “And I brought you some chocolate milk.”
I don’t need my mother when I get sick, I thought as I lay there that afternoon, turning the pages of the Archie comics, with the curtains drawn and all the clamour of the world far away and being worried about by grown-ups who aren’t me. But sometimes it’s nice to be 12 years old again. *
