o linger can mean so much. Sometimes we link it with definitions that bring about negative connotations – such as taking a long time to do something, being slow and procrastinating. But let me tell you something; there’s nothing negative about lingering. We should take longer to do something. We should be slow – or rather slow down. And it’s absolutely fine to indulge in a little bit of procrastination every now and then. The glorification of busy is exhausting, so let’s allow ourselves to linger more. Our passionate parenting columnist, Christy Herselman of The Chat, digs deeper into this sweet gift and explains how it can give us a sense of belonging – on page 30.

“I am a typical Piscean who dreamed about being a mermaid and literally chased the title,” says Londy. One morning in 2007, she was on a ship standing at the focsle (bow). “It was so beautiful to witness the sunrise, the dolphins chasing the bow, and the wind blowing against my face… I thought of Ariel in The Little Mermaid I was only 19 years old as a cadet, and
Londy grew up in Clermont with her parents and three sisters. “I had a fairly liberating upbringing,” she says – adding that she went to a local school where maritime studies was introduced as a subject. “It wasn’t appealing because I

It was six years ago when Londy stopped working at sea and moved into her role at Transnet National Ports. She later established her own maritime consulting company, which has enabled her a way into a family life on the shore side, and now lives in Hillcrest with husband, Sbusiso, and their six-year-old daughter, Sama.

Toddlers are bouncing on the trampoline, children are making peanut butter sandwiches in the kitchen, and the new puppy, Hank, is being passed from lap to lap. And this is exactly the environment that founders Kim Brown and Leanne Lorrance had hoped to create – a loving and relaxed safe haven for abandoned and orphaned babies and specialneeds children that is distinct from an institutional setting.

adopted due to the severity of their disabilities or their slightly older age. However, Kim and Leanne believe that every child deserves a family and they see it as their responsibility to provide this – whether a temporary stepping stone or, in some cases, a forever home and lifelong care.

Alongside HOLAH and Charity Hop Shop in Glenwood, Kim and Leanne manage numerous other community outreach projects under the umbrella of Likhon iThemba (a registered charity). Among these are Vikela Baby Saver, a baby safe on the boundary wall of Charity Hop Shop that allows for safe abandonment, and BOP (or Bowl of Plenty). BOP has established and supports three “gogo” kitchens, between them providing 120 children with a healthy meal every day.
When Leanne and Kim began volunteering at a baby house ten years ago, they had no idea that their journey would lead them to open their own unique home in Crestholme. After being screened as crisis parents and registering as a crisis home, they

You can do your veggie shopping and then share your carrots with a goat or bunny on your way to your car. You can pop in for beautiful fresh flowers or bread, get something framed or even try on some hand-crafted leather shoes,” says Julie – adding that her favourite thing to do is sitting on the bench with a coffee while watching the ducks enjoying their pond.
One such business, which is still thriving at the farm, is The Veggie Shop, which initially distributed vegetables to restaurants and shops. Visitors coming to buy mushrooms then started buying their fresh veggies at the farm too, and The Veggie Shop was born. “Other shops, such as Garden Decor and Peel’s Honey, then made their homes at the farm – followed by GoFresh Café. The centre literally ‘mushroomed’ and today there are a variety
of shops and services on offer.”
The Aitken family were farmers from Zululand. However, in the late 80s Dave and Dee, along with their three sons, relocated to Hillcrest to join Dee’s father, Athol Webster, who was a mushroom farmer in the area. “The Webster family were pioneers in the commercialisation of mushroom farming in South Africa, and together with Athol, Dave and Dee grew Chef

mushroom farmstall was at the gate. During the festive season, we also used to sell Christmas trees grown at our family home, Clear Springs Farm,” says Julie. “A nursery was then added on to the farmstall – all the plants initially grown at Clear Springs Farm as well.”

When
the Covid pandemic began in 2021, my wife, Jean, and I were directed to the Hillcrest Government Hospital for our first jabs. There they were quickly and efficiently administered.
The report noted that the health committee’s most pressing need was a safe and adequate water supply. The original plan was to dam a stream flowing down the Giba Gorge, at St Helier, where one would be built in the next century. The report urged the local health committee to approach the Provincial Administration with a view to meet this need by setting up a regional scheme covering the area from Botha’s Hill to Westville. This did not happen until the building of Midmar Dam in the middle of the 20th century. Before that, the village relied on water from the Nkutu stream. It was on the banks of this stream that the first Voortrekker settler established his farm, which he called Langefontein after the charming waterway.
But the history of this hospital goes far further back than that. Elizabeth Camp’s most instructive collection of material on early Hillcrest, Lest We Forget (1999), reveals that the Natal Provincial Administration built the hospital “for the chronic sick” 93 years ago, in 1929. It was erected on a 34-acre piece of land that was previously owned by R.N. Acutt –

a member of the property agent family who from 1895 had promoted the sale of stands on the section of William Gillitt’s land that would become Hillcrest.
An even more serious problem was that there was no public sewerage system in the village, and each property owner had to provide for his own needs. Some had septic tanks, others had pit privies and yet others had pail closets.
On 24 February 1944, an inspection by the Union Health Department reported that the health committee area of Hillcrest had come into effect under Proclamation 21 of
1943. At this time the European population of Hillcrest totalled 585, including 200 staff and patients at the hospital! It was also noted that the nearest general hospital was at Mariannhilll, 10 miles away. The Hillcrest Chronic Sick Hospital served the entire province of Natal.

hospital as they did all other residents of the growing village. The first was that there was no public water supply. Many villagers had rainwater tanks beside their houses — boys in their beds at Chard’s School used to hear their teachers tapping the tanks to determine the level of water in them. Other residents went to the railway siding to draw water from the tanks erected to supply the steam engines.

But this was by no means our first introduction to the place. Several decades earlier it had been a local repository for educational films, which Jean used in her classroom. Borrowing them involved one trip to collect the material and then another trip to return it. Over the years we also visited several old and infirm friends who were being cared for in the institution.
The Hillcrest Government Hospital is one of the oldest remaining institutions in what is now the Outer West. The Department of Health reports that in 2022, in addition to the 167 beds for chronic or abandoned patients, there are eight in an isolation ward. The aim is to develop the hospital into a full facility for the rehabilitation of as many patients as possible.

Demyan says he never gets tired of golf. “When I play golf, I feel very happy. I just focus and really get into the zone.”
“If there was any course in the whole world I could play, it would be Pinehurst in America,” says Demyan. A dream soon to be realised, as he plans not only to attend –but to take the trophy there in 2023.

Coached on Mondays and Fridays by Matthew Main at the Scieg Performance Centre, and out on the course at least four days a week, there’s little time for much other sport. Demyan does, however, enjoy playing soccer and cricket too.
If he could tee off with any pro, Demyan would choose Rory McIlroy. “It’s his attitude that I like most.”

Demyan placed third at their club champs a few weeks ago, competing against 35 adults and scoring 73 points off an 11 handicap over the two-day competition. He’s achieved a rolling/ open invitation to various Internationals, including the Italian Open and the SA Junior Africa Challenge, where he recently podiumed third at San Lameer and was subsequently selected to represent an international team at the Dunbar Cup.

NO BELONGING withoutlingering
The
irony of this moment does not escape me. I sit writing this article amidst probably the busiest five days I have had this year so far. I have done 12 talks in three cities, missed two of my sons’ hockey matches and my daughter’s surfing competition. I have slept way too little and worked way too much. Meals have been on the fly and most of my conversations with my husband have consisted entirely of logistics.
And yet I know that this cannot be my normal. Busy times are par for the course, but busy lives rob us of so many things, including the sweet gift of lingering. I knew that these few days would be crazy and so did my family, but I knew that tonight I would get to linger around the dinner table with my family, celebrating the 13th birthdays of my twin boys. And I cannot wait.
I love the dictionary definition of “to linger”: to stay in a place longer than necessary because of a reluctance to leave. It is such a wonderful feeling and more crucial to our emotional and relational well-being than we might think. One more bedtime story even though it’s a school night, beach days that turn into sundowners,
conversations around the dinner table while the dishes go unwashed … there is something sacred and beautiful about lingering. And as it turns out, lingering is as important as it is beautiful.Somany things happen when we linger with people we love: agendas and schedules fall by the wayside, we step off the hamster wheel and enjoy the gift of the moment, we see and are seen, we are fully present and we remember what is really important. And it is only with lingering, being together in unhurried spaces, that we are filled with the sense of belonging, of being rooted and deeply connected with one another that we as human beings need to thrive.

Harris was fortunate to be raised by a man who simply knew that animals and nature are central to our lives. “My father was a vet,” she says. “My perch was in the bush on his little black suitcase that housed all his veterinary medication, and my view was his comfortable way around animals.

After completing her BA at the University of KZN, Gabby began working at Sea World – the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), in 1990. As a result of growing up looking after rescued critters, she developed skills at hand-rearing penguins in distress, and loved getting to know the rest of the Sea World family. “My folks had developed an inherent love for animals in the way they had raised me. And psychology was a part of my degree – it led to a great love for animal behaviour management.”
“My mother grew up in a forest in Mpumalanga. She was raised on horseback,” adds Gabby. Growing up near the Kruger Park, hand-rearing kittens, birds and other wild orphans was the order of the household. “My childhood was idyllic – my best friends were always animals.” It makes sense, then, that Gabby always knew she was going to work with animals. “It truly feels like I have been a passenger on a prearranged, coordinated ride.”

We assisted SAPS to train their horses in a more ethical and safe manner. Learning about horses helped me with all other species.”

He then spent a further six years at Edendale Hospital, serving as HOD of orthopaedics from 2014 till 2017. Dr De Wet, who is happily married with two children, has lectured extensively on trauma and limb reconstruction locally and abroad. Osteoporosis occurs with increasing frequency over the age of 70 years, resulting in decreased bone density and bone weakness, often causing spinal compression fractures and deformity. These fractures can be very painful and often arise after minimal impact or force. Minor fractures are treated with analgesia and bracing until the pain resolves, which may take several weeks. The osteoporosis must also be investigated and appropriately treated. Major fractures with deformity will require minimally invasive surgery. This surgery is performed by injecting bone cement into the spine (kyphoplasty) to prevent further collapse and relieve pain.

Wayne and his family, based in the US, purchased Cheetah Ridge from Rob in 2020, and have been operating it with the same staff ever since. “We have invested in the lodge and begun refurbishment of the lodge and amenities. We have built a beautiful tennis court and upgraded the spa. The kitchen has seen a refit, as has the bar. There are bigger plans already drawn up, which we are implementing as we speak, to enhance the guest experience. A new restaurant, spa, boma, and completely renewed suites. This should all be complete by the end of 2023.”
