Building Trust and Relationships One Project at a Time Fanning Howey has had multiple success stories renovating a wide range of facilities on Indiana University’s campuses, including the recent Bryce and Ott Halls renovation on the IUPUI campus. However, despite the breadth and depth of our experienced team of designers, Fanning Howey was not initially a go-to partner for Indiana University’s significant building projects. Today, our working relationship with Indiana University is strong thanks to a concerted effort to build mutual trust and respect, one project at a time.

Overcoming Perceptions Fanning Howey pursued multiple significant projects on the Indiana University Bloomington campus for several years. Despite assembling strong teams, the university chose to work with other architects in each case. Interview debriefs and subsequent conversations with our University connections revealed a perception problem. While our firm was well respected, Indiana University perceived our extensive K-12 design experience as a hindrance. And while we had performed work on their campus before, it wasn’t enough to sway the decision-makers opinions. We knew we had to build trust and demonstrate our capabilities to succeed in overcoming this perception. It was time to roll up our sleeves, start small and “climb the ladder.”

A Grassroots Approach Fanning Howey made an early commitment to building a strong, face-to-face relationship with Indiana University. We committed to being in it for the long haul, meaning we would take on any project regardless of its size, cost or scope.

SMALL PROJECTS LEAD TO BIGGER PROJECTS In 2017, Indiana University awarded Fanning Howey a 2,720 SF renovation project involving three classrooms in the Fine Arts Building on the Bloomington Campus. Throughout this project, we made a concerted effort to be actively engaged on-site to build a stronger connection with Indiana University and reinforce our commitment to the University by: • Being physically present for weekly walkthroughs at the site. • Conducting all meetings and charrettes on-site, including Fanning Howey and the University team members. • Forming breakout groups per discipline, enabling the University to meet more Fanning Howey team members. These breakout discussions then informed the design and direction of the project. • Providing more in-depth collaboration to keep Indiana University involved in every aspect of the decision-making process. The outcome resulted in excellent drawings and a quick, successful project. It also gave us our next opportunity, a $1.5 million renovation for the IU Kelley School of Business. During this project, we began establishing relationships with multiple Indiana University project managers who were impressed with our approach to addressing the project’s existing conditions challenges. Our success in delivering their programmatic needs led to our most recent projects with Indiana University, the $5 million Wells Library renovation, and the $8.7 million Bryce Hall and Ott Hall Renovation projects.

DEVELOPING DESIGN STANDARDS When students enter a building on an Indiana University campus, the architecture and interior design must look and feel like they are in an Indiana University facility before seeing recognizable signage. For our designers, this meant finding ways to bring in modern finishes and materials while reflecting the history of IU’s buildings and brand standards. Utilizing branded elements is one way we enhanced continuity throughout our building projects and established a connection throughout the IU campus.
ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE GOALS Indiana University is a leader among Big Ten institutions in environmentally conscious building design and construction. As demonstrated in their Bicentennial Strategic Plan, we acknowledged IU’s commitment to earning LEED Gold Certification or higher on their construction projects. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, Fanning Howey is the fourth-leading firm in the world for LEED-certified educational facility design. We have designed 39 LEED Gold facilities and will soon add IU’s Bryce Hall and Ott Hall Renovation project to that list.
APPROACHING DESIGN SOLUTIONS HOLISTICALLY Our engineering team approaches system design holistically, constantly considering mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology integration for the most efficient design. While working at Indiana University on previous projects, we developed open and honest relationships with the different discipline leads. This allowed us to be highly collaborative and to find the best possible solutions for the space requirements and the individuals occupying that space.
ABOVE: Fanning Howey prioritized two categories to achieve LEED Gold on the Bryce Hall and Ott Hall renovation, Location and Transportation and Energy and Atmosphere. To do this, we leveraged the existing location with access to public transit and neighborhood connections. We also leveraged the upgraded insulation, district energy plant services from Citizen’s Energy, and new mechanical equipment. fhai.com

Herman B Wells Library Renovation Indiana University, Bloomington, IN
Indiana University wanted to consolidate departments of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (OVPUE ) under one roof in a renovated portion of Wells Library. Fanning Howey created a plan and design that clustered departments within zones, while still maintaining an open and collaborative office environment. Offices for departments like Health Professions and Prelaw are strategically located in lower-traffic areas, while the Career Development Center is next to a main entrance, giving students quick access to advising resources and collaborative work space. The design also expanded cafe seating for the nearby Bookmarket Eatery while establishing a new secure circulation pathway that separates OVPUE offices from the public cafe for the first time. Wright Education Building Library Indiana University Bloomington, Bloomington, IN
The existing library at Indiana University’s Wright Education Building will become a state-of-the-art Education Commons with multiple areas for active learning. Renovations will transform the existing School of Education (SoE) library by adding new program areas within the existing footprint. A new Children’s Literature section will allow early childhood and elementary education students to practice read-aloud and story-telling techniques. In a new section called Makerspace Lite, SoE students will practice making materials for the classroom. A book discussion area will provide spaces for groups to discuss topics in children’s literature, and a new experimental classroom will support Indiana University’s Sandbox for Learning Innovation and Design in Education (SLIDE) concept.

Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB) Indiana University Bloomington, Bloomington, IN
After receiving a new extensive technology package, Indiana University’s Office of the Vice Provost of Information Technology needed to rethink its executive workspace. Fanning Howey redesigned the 3rd-floor executive offices in the Cyber Infrastructure Building (CIB) to optimize the available square footage to accommodate new videoconference and display technology while making room for a more collaborative work environment. Particular care was taken in the technology infrastructure design to support the highly secure and sensitive data OVPIT oversees. Additionally, the design creatively adjusted the layout and infrastructure to address the mechanical and acoustical challenges of the raised floor.

Gladstein Fieldhouse Indiana University, Bloomington, IN
A detailed resurfacing project took one of the nation’s elite indoor tracks to new heights of performance. The Mondo-surfaced banked track in Gladstein Fieldhouse was originally constructed for Indianapolis’s RCA Dome and was used for the PanAm Games. In 2006, the track was removed from the RCA Dome and reassembled on the campus of Indiana University. Fanning Howey served as Architect of Record for the resurfacing of the track. The effort involved consultation with contractors who specialized in the track’s poured polyurethane surface. The project was completed on budget and in time for the University’s first indoor track meet in December 2013. That meet saw eight top times for different events, nationally.

Field Hockey Complex Indiana University, Bloomington, IN
Thanks for a turf replacement project, Indiana University Field Hockey is now on equal footing with other Big 10 Schools. Fanning Howey designed the replacement of the existing 12-year-old field hockey turf field. The new field turf is a nonfilled carpet that is FIH-certified and equal to the facilities found at other Big 10 schools. Careful study of existing conditions and early testing by LaboSport indicated that the existing eLayer could be reused. This dramatically lowered the cost of the project. Additional improvements added perimeter curbing and fencing to keep balls in play.
