Interior Design Fanning Howey’s interior design team has built a reputation for innovation. We place an emphasis on creating spaces that foster collaboration, real world experiences and project-based learning. We know how to enhance each client’s brand while addressing the technical aspects of furniture, fixtures and equipment. Our designs reflect how our clients will occupy, furnish and use their buildings.
Engineering Our engineers use an integrated approach to address all aspects of smarter places for learning. We provide in-house services for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, technology design, fire protection design, plumbing design and energy management. We are intently focused on the quality and comfort of the learning environments we design, including lighting, power, technology, ventilation, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Integrated Services Landscape Architecture Through landscape architecture, we focus on making every part of a site a tool for teaching and learning. We leverage the value in the design of soft and hardscapes to create attractive outdoor environments that serve both formal and informal educational uses. We also offer a depth of knowledge in athletic facilities, including sports fields, tracks and artificial turf surfaces. Through an integrated approach with our team members, we address sustainability issues and limit the environmental impact of learning environments.
Construction Administration Our construction administration team is made up of construction professionals who know how to get things done. Our in-house construction administrators give our clients a constant advocate throughout the construction process. Our smarter approach to design includes construction administration input during the Construction Documents phase. This results in more accurate and coordinated documents that deliver more competitive pricing, fewer change orders and greater value for our clients.
Security Consulting With three Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design-certified staff members, Fanning Howey is able to advise on a wide range of school security issues. Our work with the Department of Defense Education Activity brings additional insights and value.
Visioning / Educational Commissioning Fanning Howey has teamed with Emmy Beeson of Partnerships for Authentic Learning to provide additional services for our clients. This non-profit group consists of a team of educators who work with school districts to customize creative, inspiring, relationship-driven programming for students. They provide visioning services to staff and the community as needed. They also provide support for the staff as the buildings are designed and completed to ensure their needs are met, and the staff is equipped to enhance the learning process. Partnerships for Authentic Leadership and Learning are currently collaborating with Fanning Howey on work for seven school districts throughout the Midwest.

Trailside Elementary School Zionsville, IN
An updated elementary school prototype gives Zionsville students and educators a smarter place for learning. Fanning Howey collaborated with Zionsville educators to update an elementary school prototype last built for the district in 2007. Design strategies reimagine the entrance, giving the school its own identity. Prototype upgrades improve technology for 21st century learning, create additional large group rooms and provide more efficient workspace for teachers. The design team master planned the site to support the new elementary school and another academic building in the future.

Rosa Parks Elementary School Addition Middletown, OH
The addition to the Rosa Parks Elementary School creates a first-of-its-kind learning environment within the district. The expansion of Rosa Parks Elementary School will do more than solve a critical need for additional space at Middletown City Schools. The design aligns with the Challenge Based Learning model of the Middie Modernization Movement. Smarter design solutions include the use of circulation space as exploration areas, the incorporation of flexible furniture and the use of transparency and views to inspire curiosity.

Finneytown Elementary School Finneytown, OH
Finneytown Local Schools embarked on a HPLE process to develop a comprehensive districtwide Educational Vision and Educational Specifications for new school facilities to house K-6 students. The district’s instructional programs, delivery methods, integration of technology, and future student needs were reviewed. With the onset of COVID, an alternative approach to school planning was developed by our team which allowed input from teachers, staff, students and administrators into the facility planning process. Little Miami Early Childhood Center Morrow, OH
Little Miami wanted an early elementary school where students in preschool, kindergarten and first grade could explore and experience different types of learning environments. The programming and vision of the district curriculum led to a building designed with academic pods to support the children. Each pod is organized with 6 classrooms, a small group room and a large common flex studio. The flex studios are highly interactive and include a small learning stair complete and slide element. This gives children the opportunity for movement within the space and supports socioemotional developmental needs. The building is designed to feel appropriate to the early learners, including an exterior envelope that is scaled to a child’s point of view. To meet DoDEA’s vision for progressive learning environments, the Fanning Howey team partnered with Waller, Todd & Sadler Architects to push the boundaries of design for flexible school facilities. This replacement elementary school features learning studios arranged around collaboration hubs. The facility contains almost no fixed casework, allowing teachers to quickly arrange and rearrange the environment to support various learning and teaching styles. The new Nathaniel Jones Early Childhood Center gives young students an environment designed around their specific cognitive and developmental needs. The design creates two small learning communities with a variety of spaces to engage in sensory learning. Ecole Kenwood Elementary School Columbus, OH
The new Ecole Kenwood Elementary School allows students to explore language through a variety of learning styles. This replacement school is located on the same urban site as the previous school. A main street-like flex studio serves as the organizing spine of each building’s academic neighborhoods, supporting individual exploration, group work and presentations. The design meets the challenges of the constricted site while fully supporting the school’s pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade French language immersion program with custom signage, teacher-selected quote walls and built-in displays.

Shale Meadows updates Olentangy Local Schools’ elementary school prototype for the 21st century. For decades, Fanning Howey has helped Olentangy Schools manage district wide expansion through building prototypes that provide consistent resources for all students. Shale Meadows Elementary School updates the district’s existing prototype to meet the needs of project-based learning. The modified design includes additional classrooms and small group areas, a reimagined media center and reorganized administrative space with a secure entry vestibule. The design also provides dedicated SLC classrooms with internal restrooms and tutor spaces. Shale Meadows sparked a refresh of Olentangy’s remaining 15 elementary schools, with Fanning Howey designing upgrades to media centers, playgrounds and secure entries at each campus.

Tyrone Middle School Additions/Renovations Largo, FL
A total campus modernization is creating a new home for Tyrone Middle School’s Center for Innovation and Digital Learning. Students at Tyrone Middle School learn about artificial intelligence, virtual reality and digital simulation. But for years, they did so in an outdated campus setting. The design by Fanning Howey, in association with Rowe Architects, creates a unified campus connected by a central Scholar Street. At the terminus of Scholar Street is a two-story Innovation Center which represents the central tenets of the Center for Innovation and Digital Learning: exploration, collaboration and critical thinking. The Innovation Center includes a research commons, technology exploration labs, a television studio and science demonstration labs that double as makerspaces. The dramatic building includes a large amount of glass curtainwall, providing Tyrone Middle School with a striking new identity within the community. Associate Firm: ROWE ARCHITECTS

James Blair Middle School Williamsburg, VA
The new James Blair Middle School is designed to support all of the different ways that students learn. The new facility embraces the concept of flexibility in an integrated environment by allowing teachers to switch methodology and recombine students for short periods of time based on their mastery of stated standards. This approach creates new opportunities for students and maximizes personalized learning at the school. At Colonel Smith Middle School, every space is a learning space, and learning begins the moment a student steps onto the site. Superintendent Ronda Frueauff had a vision for Colonel Smith and challenged our team to rethink what a middle school could be and how a STEM focus should impact design. Skyline and Cyprus High Schools Salt Lake City, UT
This $230 million effort is creating two new flagship high schools for Granite School District that are unlike any other schools in the state. As pipelines to the future, the planning and design concepts for Skyline High School and Cyprus High School focus on providing the flexibility to respond to future changes in education. Our team’s design concepts are inspired by the regular floorplate grids and flexible environments that are prized by companies like Apple and Google. The primary design element is a central spine called Main Street which provides full transparency from one end of the building to the other on each floor, and places collaboration spaces in the heart of the academic floor plate.

Completed in late 2020, Columbia City High School is our team’s most current example of designing for 21st Century learning. Innovative 21st century learning concepts of transparency and flexibility, college and career programs, integrated technologies and advanced security design will prepare students at Columbia City High School for the rapidly-changing modern world. Academic houses provide a mix of open collaboration space and specialty space for instruction and research. Coolidge High School Washington, D.C.
Renovations to the historic Coolidge High School bring 21st century education to D.C. students, with new additions mimicking existing structures to preserve the building’s legacy. Renovations combined two separate schools (a middle school and a high school) through the modernization of the existing historic building. Phelps is the first public high school in the nation to offer students both college preparatory and vocational education dedicated exclusively to the design professions and construction trades. A complete overhaul of the existing campus placed the school at the leading-edge of high-tech education. At Phelps, the entire building acts as a teaching tool for real-world learning and observation. The twostory main commons serves as a showcase of construction materials for welding, drywall, flooring and masonry. Students gain practical experience by using heavy equipment and crane simulators, high-tech drafting labs and an HVAC laboratory with equipment maintenance trainers. Carmel High School Natatorium Carmel, IN
Carmel High School’s new natatorium, in concert with renovations to the existing pool, will provide a complex to better serve students, the community and top-tier competition. This expansion more than doubles the available water surface for swimming programs that continue to grow in the Carmel community. The new expanded entrance is truly the second main entrance to the high school, welcoming students arriving from the trail and parking lots to the north as well as athletes and spectators for events in the natatorium, fieldhouse and other athletic facilities. The competition pool is designed to serve the needs of Carmel’s record-breaking swim program. A fully recessed gutter, a flat pool floor with 8-foot depth exceeding FINA and USA Swimming standards for entry safety, 25-meter width and cooler water temperature ensures this will be one of the fastest pools in the nation.

The new Center Grove High School natatorium will provide space for expanded activities in and out of the pool. The natatorium includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, integral diving well and spectator seating capacity of 1,150 people. The 50+ meter Olympic-sized pool has two movable bulkheads which reconfigure to support two 25-meter competition courses, two 25yard courses or a 50-meter Olympic training course. In addition to the competition pool, a zero-depth entry therapy pool and additional support spaces at deck level will provide students with expanded opportunities to learn and compete at a higher level.

The expanded Pike High School natatorium provides new swimming, diving and instructional opportunities for the students of MSD of Pike Township. The new pool facility is designed for maximum flexibility of instructional programs. The competition pool is configured so that multiple programs can be conducted simultaneously, and a smaller body of water surrounded entirely by deck space provides an optimum learn to swim and water therapy environment.
